this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, september 25th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the fight against isis continues this morning. air strikes overnight killed at least a dozen isis fighters in syria and now more nations are joining the u.s.-led coalition against the terror organization. the moves come after president obama made his case to the united nations. he's asking other countries to stand with the united states in efforts to take down the islamic extremist group. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. the speech from the president at the united nations comes and they continue to pound isis targets include manager, many small oil installations, a major source of this group's funding. now, as the president issued this international call to arms he issue add warning about what

away from where he was seen over the weekend. >> reporter: the four-day manhunt for jesse matthew jr. ended a on the beaches along th gulf coast. back in virginia shar slotsville police chief timothy longo says the case is nowhere closed. >> we have a person in custody but there's a long road ahead of us and that long road includes finding hannah graham. >> reporter: the 18-year-old disappeared on september 17th after leaving a party by herself. video shows her walking through a busy area. video also shows matthew and graham together. a $100,000 award is being offered. >> we're asking you to find hannah. we're asking every person with the sound of my voice to find hannah graham. >> reporter: matthew went on a run after a brief meeting with

the charlottesville police after asking for an attorney. it's unclear why he fled to texas. >> to kill or hurt somebody, that's not my son. >> reporter: matthew's father believes his son is innocent. he played football. more recently he volunteered as a coach at a high school something that his father said is a helpful part of his nature. >> maybe he was trying to give the girl a ride home. >> officials at the school say matthew passed through a normal interview process which included a background check. right now he's charged with abduction with intent to defile. authorities in virginia are working to have him extradited from texas. >> wendy gillette, thank you. police in northeast pennsylvania say they think they spotted erin frein. he is the suspect the in ambush shooting of two state troopers earlier this month.

fire in the state this year. firefighters say it's nearly 40% contained. it's charred 145 square miles since it began two weeks ago. it has destroyed 12 homes. this week in new york city the fire didn't got another tragic reminder of the september 11th attacks. three firefighters who answered the call to the world trade center died within hours of one another. as jessica schneider of our new york station, each of the men had cancer caused by the toxic conditions at ground zero. >> reporter: on the same day three heroic lives came to an end. firefighter danieling heland spent 21 years with the fdny. he died one day before his 59th berry. he and robert lever grew up together in brooklyn and were childhood friends. bischoff served 19.

the driver killed by nascar champ tony stewart last month had enough marijuana in his system to impair his judgment. prosecutors say stewart won't face charges in the death of kevin ward jr. the two were racing last month in upstate new york when ward stepped out of his car to confront stewart. stewart killed the 20-year-old. video from the racetrack shows stewart did nothing wrong. on the "cbs moneywatch," bugs in apple's new operating system and they're maybing their holliday bu. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. users had complained that the update rendered their phones unable to make calls. that problem caused problems

time now for a check of the frachlt rain in the east today from northern virginia to southern new england. the south will be dry except for the carolinas and florida. the midwest will be dry today and warm. in the west, showers in northern california and the pacific northwest. now, the wet weather and the forecast here in new york is jeopardizing what's supposed to be the final home game for retiring yankees shortstop derek jeter. the yankees were eliminated from playoff contention with a 9-5 loss to baltimore on wednesday. if tonight's game is rained out, it's possible that the game would not be made up, meaning that jeter's playing days in the bronx are already over. the los angeles dodgers will keep on playing in through october. clayton kershaw wins his 21st game of the season, and as an rbi triple as the guy pops it, 9-1. san francisco can still make the playoffs with one more win or

one more loss by milwaukee. and the detroit tigers are going back to the postseason for the fourth consecutive year. former cy young winner justin verlander looks dom and in against chicago, allowing just one win in eight innings. the tigers win, 6-1 to secure a wild-card spot in the american league. american pitcher phil hughes needs to record one more out to earn an additional $500,000 this season but it looks like that won't happen. hughes pitched eight strong innings against arizona yet but the game was delayed by rain by more than an hour. he returned with 209 2/3 innings this year. the $500,000 bonus would have kicked in if he pitched 210 innings. . going up on the "cbs this morning" gayle sits down with

earlier this year the social security administration came under fire for a controversial program. it was seizing tax refunds from people whose relatives owed the government money. congress cried foul and the agency said it would stop but as wyatt andrewss reports, it didn't. >> reporter: we first met mary grice in april after her tax refund of almost $3,000 had been confiscated she said without notice. it turned out social security administration received it complaining her family received too many benefits after her father died in 1960. grice who was 5 years oil at the time never got a penny and calls the loss of her refund an injustice. >> they feel like we're the

government who can do what we want when we want hour we want. it cease unfair. >> reporter: grice was the target of what the social security calls treasure reprogram. the total of debt totals $17 million and needs to be collected but when greiss's story went public they said in a statement it would never try to collect the debt of a person's relative. we found several taxpayers who say social security is doing just that, taking refunds without evidence the debt is theirs. here's what happened to diana vonderack of new jersey. >> i asked them to give me checks with signatures so i could show them i didn't sign the checks. . >> social security said in a statement we do provide documentation of the alleged overpayments but john jones of maryland who lost a $3,100

refund saved a voice mail from a social security worker warning him not to expect any documents. >> there is no paper folder existing for that. as i said, usually after seven years they're destroyed. >> when mary greiss complained last spring social security at first paid her back but last month it sent this letter saying she still owes the debt. well, you haven't explained me why i owe you $2,996, and i have no intentions of paying it until you do. >> reporter: social security tells us the entire debt collection process remains under review but five taxpayers have sued to stop this program. they all say they've lost money they don't owe without proper notice or appeal for debt the government can't prove. wyatt andrews, cbs news, washington. well, coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning," we'll go to charlottesville for the latest on the arrest in the
