>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> well, two fast moving fires force rescues at a philadelphia apartment complex and tonight officials are calling them both suspicious. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. authorities say they are questioning a suspect at this hour. the fires broke out in the 7,000 block of stenton avenue in mount airy.

"eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhury spoke to residents. >> reporter: this is real. we need to get out. oh my god we need to get out. >> reporter: residents woke up to a scary scene not one but two fires broke out in the building on the 7400 block of stenton avenue around 2:30 sunday morning. one fire was start in there a hallway on the first floor, the other also in a hallway but on the third floor. officials say gasoline may have been used to set the fire. >> question a suspect and the fire appears to be suspicious in nature. >> reporter: nadine lives on the fourth floor with her eight-year-old son. she says the building has had many false alarms so when the smoke detectors went off many residents did not evacuate. >> we didn't know if we really should be going. something said open the door to check. when i opened, i saw black smoke and within a minute it was just dark. >> reporter: the fire moved so quickly some residents were forced to be rescued from

their balconies. >> we're talking down the stairs, i actually ran away from my family to go bang on the next doors as we was going down. but you could only go so far because it was completely blacked out. >> reporter: two people were taken to the hospital, one was treated for second degree burns, its other for smoke inhalation. other residents are returning back to their apartment learning the extent of their damage. >> extremely smoky. there's water everywhere. we're just out here hoping that things work out. >> reporter: some families will not be able to stay in their units but the red cross is offering assistance. in mount airy, syma chowdhury, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> and developing now, we've learned that cooper health systems ceo john sheridan and his wife joyce died suddenly this morning. the health system has not provided any additional information but released a statement calling sheridan a "true gentleman, an outstanding leader. he became president and ceo of health system in 2008.

camden mayor dana redd released this statement saying in part, "they will both be profoundly missed by the entire camden community. i have personally known john sheridan since 2001. john's leadership and friendship is a loss for so many include myself ." also more than a thousand people, they marched in the puerto rican day parade this sunday under the watchful eyes of philadelphia police determined to keep participants and party goers alike all safe. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson is live in north philadelphia, that's where post parade festivities i see are still under way there. steve, good evening. >> reporter: yeah, good evening to you, natasha. absolutely. you know this is my first puerto rican day festival here in philadelphia. and so far i have to say it is rowdy, it is noisy but so far it has been completely peaceful and that's because of what crowd goers say is a increased police presence from years previous. >> ♪ >> reporter: anyone who knows what puerto rican day is

like in philly knows there are 2000 very different festivals. >> ♪ >> reporter: the family friendly traditional parade on the parkway and this a boisterous sometimes rowdy flooding the streets of philadelphia. >> it's an opportunity to celebrate our culture, our cultural values. >> reporter: this year the parade featured 1500 marchers performing to a crowd of thousands with the theme of hebero. >> the present humble worker from puerto rico where a lot of our core roots and principals derive from. >> reporter: anyone who knows part two say it can can easily get out of hand and police say not this year. >> we have been enforcing the motor vehicle code. we won't let anyone lang on top or outside of a vehicle. we don't let them spin wheels. we've been ticketing for those types of things. >> reporter: our cameras were rolling when a burnout found in a bad day for people in this ride. >> it's a little different this year. >> reporter: just about everyone we spoke to says they

can feel the difference. >> there's a lot more police, absolutely. more security personnel. >> a lot of police officers. >> they telling everybody get in the car, turn your music down. >> it's safer but we want to have fun, you know, at the same time. >> reporter: and so where we are sixth and lehigh this is the staging area where philly police are. i just spoke to officers. they say absolutely no serious incidents in this festival whatsoever, just a lot of citations and a lost tickets. we're live in north philly, i'm steve patterson, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, steve, it's good to see folks having a fun safe time out there. thank you. turning to our weather we've enjoyed the return of summer this weekend. pretty nice out. but are changes headed our way? meteorologist justin drabick is live on the cbs3 sky deck with the first forecast. another great place to be tonight, justin. >> that's right, natasha. someone took the lounge claire away from us. i was going to hang out here after the newscast. it's so comfortable outside. we have a nice breeze.

there are some clouds, mid to high level clouds. they're not going to produce any rain so we'll keep things dry for the night. check out the high temperature. a good 10 degrees above average, 83 at philadelphia international airport, record high for the state is 91 degrees. that was set back in 1886. now, here we are still 79 at the airport, 78 allentown. hanging onto 80 in reading. lower 70's towards the shore points, upper 70's in the willow grove area, 75 in doylestown, also northeast philly still checking in at 81. there are some of those clouds moving in from the south and west so that will be the trend through the overnight hours. again no threat of any rain. that will come in our forecast later on this week. coming up in the seven day we'll talk about how long these warm temperatures last and i'll show you the next chance for a few showers. that's all coming up in a few minutes. natasha. >> justin we'll see you soon. thank you. we've got new information tonight in the search for eric frein the man accused of killing one pennsylvania state trooper and seriously injuring another. state police announce the

search shifted southeast but still believe the suspect is within five square miles of his parents' home in monroe county. they wouldn't elaborate on exactly what led them to this new search zone. also tonight philadelphia police are investigating a death at a septa train station. septa officials tell us a man fell onto the tracks at the fern rock regional rail station about 10:20 this morning. service was delayed briefly as police conducted their investigation. it's still unclear exactly what caused the plan to fall. and a barrage of gunfire sends four people to the hospital in philadelphia's fairhill neighborhood. it happened here on the 2800 block of hope street. eyewitnesses say a dark colored car with silver rims drove by at about 5:00 a.m. and someone inside opened fire. there's no word on the victim's conditions just yet. an an eight-year-old girl remains in critical condition at children's hospital of philadelphia tonight after being attacked by a pitbull. this happened on saturday afternoon on adelene drive in

delaware. her sister fought off the dog and called 911. the child was bitten multiple times and did suffer severe soft tissue injuries. responding officers had to shoot the pitbull because it was so aggressive. and traffic is at least moving again here along i-95 after a tractor-trailer overturned and caught fire. this was the scene from our traffic camera earlier this afternoon. it was quite a mess out there. all northbound lanes were closed near woodhaven road as crews cleaned up that mess. luckily, no one was injured. two churches affected by recent mergers, they get even more bad news. their church buildings are closing now for good. saint calista's parish in west philadelphia had serious mold that is too expensive for the new our lady of lourdes parish to fix. saint laurentius has

>> a boat capsizes 5 miles south of santa bell elfland florida sending seven people into the water. video shows a four-year-old and two five year olds with an adult on top of the overturned boat. three other adults floated nearby. rescuers did throw them a line and plucked them out of the water one by one. officials say rough waters caused the boat to take on water and the engine to stall. also today, airstrikes carried out by the u.s. led coalition hit an oil refinery in northern syria that was held by islamic state militants. meantime the al-qaeda affiliate in syria is warning that jihadists around the

world will strike strike back at the coalition. along with isis, the nusra front is a target of the air raids. both groups wants to impose islamic law in syria but they're fighterring each other. president barack obama is acknowledging that the united states underestimated the rise of isis in iraq and syria. in an interview tonight on cbs's 60 minutes the president says the situation calls for both military and political solutions. >> essentially what happened with isil was that you had al-qaeda in iraq which was a vicious group but our marines were able to quash with the help of sunni tribes. they went back underground but over the past couple of years, during the chaos of the syrian civil war where essentially you have huge swaths of the country that are completely ungoverned, they were able to recons tutor -- reconstitute

themselves. >> you can see the full interview tonight on 60 minutes. that's next at 7 o'clock. tensions running high in ferguson missouri after a police officer is shot. the unidentified officer was shot in the arm last night when he encountered two men outside avenue closed community center. the officer returned fire but they did get away. the officer is expected to be okay. the chief of police was asked if the shooting had anything at all to do with ongoing protests about the shooting death of michael brown. >> i don't think it is. it didn't happen within the proximity of the protest area. this is an area that's fairly secluded and i wouldn't have any reason to believe right now that it was linked in any way shape, manner or form with the protests. >> hours later an off duty ferguson officer was cut by broken glass during a drive by shooting. officials say it's unlikely the suspects knew he was an officer when they fired at his personal vehicle. and we are getting a look now at the new mr. and

mrs. clooney. take a look. cameras caught them leaving the venice hotel where they were married yesterday. human rights lawyer amal alamuddin did what many thought was impossible and got oscar winning actor george clooney to commit for the long haul. a civil ceremony is expected to take place at venice's town hall tomorrow. and take a look here. powerful storms brought heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the southwest. there was some serious damage at phoenix's sky harbor international airport and some residents became stranded due to flood waters. no injuries have been reported. the storms also caused flooding in parts of nevada as well. justin they're having a tough time out there in the southwest area but we're having beautiful days here. >> yeah, much of the east coast very quiet. we're in a very quiet weather pattern. temperatures well above average feeling like summer today. looks like we'll finish off the month of september on the warmer side. so, check out the conditions outside wherever you are.

pretty nice, just some high level clouds moving through. we'll look at atlantic city right now. nice finish to the day coming off great beach day once again, sunshine with temperatures well into the 70's. look after these highs today across the delaware valley. again, this is typical for mid, even early august. minus the humidity. look at that. 84 in allentown for the high, 85 in reading, a little bit cooler near the shore but still not bad into the upper 70's. ocean water temperature still hanging onto 70 degrees. and it's warm outside still this hour. upper 70's even still some low 80's showing up. trenton at 81 degrees, 80 in reading, 78 right now in wilmington, delaware. there's some of those clouds moving in from the south and west but really no rain showing up on storm scan3. the exception a little shower trying to break out across northern virginia. we'll keep things dry into the work week. tuesday and wednesday are our next shot for a couple of showers, not a big storm to talk about at all. look at the wind arrows, they're pointing northward. that means a southerly breeze.

that's why our temperatures are on the warm side that. warm air mass sticks around overnight. tomorrow same deal, light winds about five to 10 miles per hour out of the south and southwest but notice the wind direction as we head towards tuesday. starts to shift more easterly and southeasterly so that's coming off the ocean so we'll gradually knock the temperatures back down to where they should be starting tuesday. another warm day on monday, partly sunny skies. temperatures upper 70's to again near 80 degrees. i think many spots will hit that 80-degree mark. on tuesday, cold front moves in from the north, we have a storm off shore. it's going to bring some clouds, maybe a couple of scattered showers tuesday afternoon. not everyone sees the showers. same deal on wednesday. this fronts kind of lingers around, the storm off shore, an easterly wind flow, some clouds maybe a couple showers also on wednesday. both days will not abwashout. and i'll show you this on our future weather model. nothing happening overnight. here's 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning a-good morning commute, a mix of sun and clouds, same deal into the afternoon and maybe those clouds try to thick thick den up a bit. tuesday some sunshine, showers

try to black out during the afternoon spots in some spots across the region. same story on wednesday. wednesday afternoon things could refire through the afternoon. temperatures tomorrow morning again 50 to low 60's so a comfortable start to the work week into the afternoon upper 70's to around 80 degrees. and then on tuesday, slightly cooler, lower 70's near the shore. inland spots still pretty mild for this time of year in the middle 70's. it will be mild overnight, partly cloudy, low for center city, 62 degrees. many suburbs will be in the 50's once again. another warm day on monday. partly sunny with a high near 80 degrees. remember, our average high is 73 for this time of year. here's the extended forecast. more clouds around on tuesday, could be a couple of showers in the afternoon. kind of a repeat on wednesday. tuesday's high still warm at 78. then we drop back closer to average, mid 70's for wednesday, thursday and friday. and then on next saturday i think we see a better chance for some widespread showers as another front moves through looks like next sunday we're talking about temperatures in the upper 60's. so there's some fall
