from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". new this morning, gunfire outside a bar leaves a man dead. we're live as police search for the shooter. also this morning, the latest on the first texas nurse diagnosissed when ' bowl a nina pham's condition is now downgraded. powerful hurricane gonzalo bears down on bermuda knocking out power to thousands. today is saturday, october 18th, good morning, thanks so much for joining us, i'm nicole brewer. it is 5:00 o'clock. we start things off with a check of the weather. carol erickson standing by for us. >> it is great to see you, nicole. we are looking at a pretty nice day today. it is cents chilly out here this morning, but not as cold as it will be getting by the time we hit monday morning.

let's see what we have out there at the present time. you can see things are looking pretty quiet. you can see some of the clouds off, way off, to the right, if you will, off to the east. and that's from hurricane gonzalo. you can see lot of clouds over there. but we are looking at fairly nice day today. sun, clouds, but i think you will also be very much noticing a breeze, especially later on this afternoon. temperature of 56 degrees, that's the temperature out in ardmore at this point. we have 60 degrees through center city area. now, 59 out at the airport. fifty-five in trenton, 57 degrees in wilmington, so, this is as mild a start as we will be finding over the next couple of days at least. our temperatures this afternoon, looks pretty nice, we have readings that will be getting into the 60s, upper 60s, so not as mild as it has been over the lasts couple of days. sun, clouds, breeze, as the front moves through the area. let's put future weather into motion here watch do we see? we see pretty nice day. now it, does want to bring

couple of sprinkles well to the north out of our area as is this front moves on through this afternoon, but otherwise things looking pretty nice around here. for how long? i will come back and let you know with our eyewitness weather seven day forecast, nick snow. >> carol, thank you. meanwhile, investigators are hoping surveillance video will lead them to gunman who opened fire on victim outside hunting g park bar. steve patterson is live at police headquarters where detectives are questioning some eyewitnesses cents, steve, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, nicole. basic details at this point, it is early in the investigation, but what we can tell you is as you mentioned police have a lot to work with at this point. i want to take to you video we have of the scene. it is sometime after 10:00 last night, the corner of eighth and hunting park, police say, 22 year old man was coming out of a bar when shots rang out. when they got on scene, they found that man laying outside of the bar. they tried to take him to temple hospital where he was pronounced dead, sometime

before 10:45. so the search on for a single shooter, if there is any good news here, it is that the trail is very hot for detectives. police not only have shell casings, they have witnesses cents, that you mentioned, interviewing, they have canvassed the neighborhood where they believe the suspect escaped, and ran to, so we spoke to the captain about how they're putting all of this together. >> we have a bunch of witnesses now being interviewed. we have homicide on the scene. we have good surveillance video that actually shows the shooter running toward the corner of franklin, hunting park, and passing the gun to somebody else. >> the surveillance video is important because as the captain was mentioning, it shows what they believe is the suspect running into a neighborhood. they're going to the next step for them to get warrants, as is they believe the suspect may have ran into one of the local houses, in that neighborhood, taking sanctuary, so that's where their investigation picks up this morning. we will keep you updated on their search for the shooter, the latest from philadelphia

police headquarters, steve patterson, cbs-3, "eyewitness news", back to you. >> steve, thank if you. and now to the latest on ' bowl a doctors say nina pham the first texas nurse diagnosed with ebola is resting comfortably despite the fact her condition dropped from good to fair. meantime researchers at the national institutes every health where pham is being treated say they are working feverishly on posse bowl a vaccine. president obama has named ron complain, former chief of staff, joe biden, al gore, to sever as ebola czar. as for the cruise ship caring dallas healthcare worker being monday towards for signs of ebola headed back to texas, that ship refused to dock at cozumel, mexico. officials in the delaware valley want the public to know they are prepared for ebola. we learn another philadelphia hospital could soon be on the front line to fight the virus. our natasha brown has the details.

>> the hospital of the university of pennsylvania will care for medical workers who contract ebola while working in west africa. the hospital has conducted refresher training and says it is able to safely and effectively isolate suspected case. >> pennsylvania currently does not have any positive cases of ebola. >> urging calm and trying to eli fears, state and local leaders appealing to pennsylvania residents assuring them that steps are in place to deal with the ebola crisis. this on the heals of news that three people from northwestern pennsylvania were on the frontier airlines flight on monday from columbus to dallas, that carried nurse amber vincent, who has ebola. >> at this point in time they are showing no symptoms. and in addition to having daily calls with those residents, we will be continuing to have themself monitor. >> governor tom corbett says the three unidentified pennsylvanians are still in texas, told by the cdc not to travel for 11 -- 21 days, governor standing dollars

by -- flanked by state health officials. reiterating risk to the general very vaux low, but potential cases are ongoing. >> we're evaluating all of our procedures, are there any gaps or elements that need to be changed based on the news from texas. >> the mayor tried to yell fears among city residence, protective gear for first respond ers, healthcare workers, hospitals, being upgraded in case the threat of ebola reaches within the boundaries of philadelphia. >> the best we can do is to be as best prepared as we can with nothing going on at the moment. >> natasha brown, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". the liberian community is unite to go raise money to help fight ebola. "eyewitness news", at the african cultural center in southwest philadelphia last night. as about two dozen people learned about the philadelphia foundation's new liberia ebola relief funds. money raised will be used to provide medical supplies in the heart he is hit areas of

liberian one we associate a lot are hazmat suits, protective chemical suits, made here in our area, they're being used in american hospitals, and by aid workers in africa. "eyewitness news" anchor chris may got a chance to try on one of those suits. he will show you how they work coming up. meanwhile, we are waiting for daylight in bermuda to get idea of damage left behind from hurricane gonzalo. that will category two storm spent all night lashing the tiny islands. this is some video here from overnight. you can see it is tough to actually make out the extent of the damage. but earlier this is the day, you could see heavy surf nearly 10-foot tall storm surges, right now word the islands' main hospital is damaged. much of the islands now without power. so far there is no reported injuries. so good news there. well, the search search on r hit-and-run driver who side-swiped new jersey state police cruiser in monmouth county. dash cam video shows the close call for two troopers there.

conducting a stop at i95 in upper freehold, left colored jeep whizzed by, the trooper was not injured. >> corrections cents officer found murdered inside her south philadelphia home stabbed in the back several times. this as police narrow in on suspect, todd quinones, talked to her distraut family. >> my sister was loving. and she didn't de is her whatever they did to her. who ever did it, turn yourself in, let my sister rest in peace, let the family rest in peace, please. >> the sister and other family members every correctional officer freda denny met outside her home friday night. it is here inside denny's southwest philadelphia home and the 2500 block of south 63rd street, her brother, fawn her body, the 50 year old was stabbed multiple times in the back. >> i just want him to be caught, who ever did it, because he was cents a bumm that stabbed her in the back. >> her family became suspicious after the correctional officer failed to

show up to work at the philadelphia department of corrections, a correctional officer for more than 20 years according to her family. investigators tell me they are looking into the possibility her killer may have known her. they were no signs of forced entry into the home. and sources indicate an acquaintance of denny's pulled over for traffic stop, while driving her suv in south philadelphia wednesday night. they say the man was given a ticket for driving without a license, and her vehicle was impounded by police. but at that time denny was not reported missing, and the man was allowed to walk away. denny is survived by a daughter and her two grandchildren. >> we just want justice, that's all we want, just justice. >> the late friday night the president of the union which overseas the city correctional officer released this statement saying the law enforcement community mourns beloved officer. correctional officer lot i freda denny was a dear and wonderful friends and great co-worker. she will be missed by all the employees of the philadelphia

prisons system and the entire membership of the afscme local 159. as of right now, no suspects have been arrested. reporting from police headquarters, in center city, todd quinones, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". police question and row least two women in connection with road rage incident that involved school bus full of children. detectives may have located the suv that blocked the bus during thursday's attack in northeast philadelphia. eyewitnesses say a passenger got out and sprayed mace at the bus. another woman used a bat to break the bus window. fifteen year old student suffered cuts. so far no arrests. well, trooper alex douglas cents left geisinger community medical center with police escort thursday and taken to rehab facility. he had been hospitalized since the september 12 ambush at the state police barracks in up-state pennsylvania. despite sitings and evidence discoveries, suspect eric frein continues to he will

leud police. police want to know if the driver of this tractor-trailer was under the influence when he sped down norristown streets, blew through red lights, and crashed into parked cars. an officer gave chase, and fired at the driver fearing for the lives of the folks on the streets. the 26 year old driver was shot in the arm and taken to the hospital in handicuffs. well the planet mars is facing a close call this weekend. a comet, the size after mountain, and it is cosmic event. that's coming up next. we'll also have this story. >> the holiday shopping season is a month away. but there are still plenty of sales in october. i'm allison harmilan. i'll tell you which items are selling at a

be becoming increasingly fall like this weekend, that's the translation for the temperatures cooling down. but, it is nice out here so far this morning. let's take a look, see what we have out there at the present time. we have 59 degrees, it is dark, in cape may courthouse, with that temperature of 59 degrees. not much in the way of a winds at this point. and you will be finding a nice looking sunrise there. our temperatures everywhere are in the 50's, with just two exceptions: wildwood, 63 degrees, and atlantic city about 10 miles inland at six off degrees this morning. otherwise, philadelphia, very close to that 60 degrees mark. in the poconos, it is 54. reading, 55 degrees. trenton, 55 degrees. dover, wilmington, 57 degrees this morning. notice on storm scan3, that we have got quiet conditions in our area, but there is cents a front off to the west, doesn't have a lot of moisture associated with it, maybe enough to bring a sprinkle or two up to the poconos. otherwise it looks like we will be staying dry around here today. with mixture mostly of sun and

clouds as we go through the day. so friday was great. saturday, well, i think it will be nice, but maybe not as nice, because those winds will be picking up today. and the temperatures will be slightly cooler. it is a breeze behind that front that comes on through. and then tomorrow it is still breezy around here, that high pressure system continues to build in to the area. but it looks like nice weather conditions, at least very nice sky conditions. then on monday, the start of monday, there could be frost in a number of areas by the time we get to monday morning. so just kind of watch for that. and that in some areas to the north doses that heralding ends to the growing season, we'll see about that, just because the winds may come up it, may stop some of the frost cents from forming on the early monday morning time period. otherwise, we take a look at our weather right now, and you can see that with those sprinkle or brief light shower up through the poconos, that should the extent of it, we will be finding some clouds through here, and again, it will be on the breezy side today, on the windy side

tomorrow. by the time we hit 3:00 in the morning we are looking at some nice conditions, and by tomorrow and really over the next this whole weekend will look very, very nice around here. so enjoy this weather, we have temperatures that are going to be easy to take over the next couple oval days. by monday looking at maybe a rain shower off to the west, but then we start to pick up some rain shower chances cents cents, even in our area, and we'll start watching for those over the next couple of days, but not this weekend. it is moving away, hurricane gonzalo is, away from bermuda, now they've just got some probably pretty big clean upgoing on as a result of the wind, the rain, the storm surge, et cetera, in that area. this was a pretty powerful storm to hit that tiny beautiful, beautiful island. we are looking for this thing to be moving on away, and that's going to be good news for them. but you could find some rougher surf around here, as well, as is this thing continues to weaken as is it pulls away from bermuda. we have temperatures today that are going to be 68 in

philadelphia, shore, 68, the poconos, 58 degrees. temperatures that are pretty nice, and right about where they should be this time of the year, 48 degrees tonight, mostly cloudy with the breeze, and then over the next couple of days notice these temperatures that will be in the 50's, sunday, monday, very cold night, sunday night into monday morning, then shower chances, as we get monday night, tuesday, wednesday, and at this point, even on thursday, nicole. >> carol, thank you. well, you know it was coming, right? the holiday shopping season, still a month away, of course. but right now apparently good time to get some great deals. cbs news correspondent allison harmilan shows us which products are on sale. >> winter just around the corner, but nick already shopping for next summer. he came to sears looking for a deal on a new lawn mower. >> actually just bought new house, so now i am really looking to save money on stuff like that. >> consumer reports says this is great time of year to save on summer items. >> because it is the ends of the season, retailers want to

this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". the hunt is on for a killer, police searching for a suspect after a bar shooting last night, i'll tell you why they're confident they're going to catch their man. this morning credit cards denied. restaurant denied the president of the united states, and honed dollars up paying the bill. and, could there be a major change coming to the catholic church in the policy shift that may be in the works this weekend. we'll explain. today is saturday, october 18th, good morning to you, thanks so much for joining us, i'm nicole brewer, about 5:30 right now, a check on the forecast, carol's outside with the details. >> good morning to you, nicole, high, everybody, dealing with fairly nice

weekends coming up this weekends. but definitely going to be one of the fall weekends, it is as lot better weather today than it was last saturday, if you remember all of the rain that we saw that day. let's take a look, see what we have out there, at the present time. out in reading at this point. and it looks not bad. we see no rain. we see no fog. things are looking pretty nice. and predictably dark at this hour of the morning. storm scan3 no problems in our area whatsoever. you notice little precipitation off to the west. that's associated with front that's going to be coming by. that's going to change our wind direction, and it is also going to be picking that wind up. we will be finding winds gusting today and gusty again tomorrow. 59 degrees, the temperature right now in philadelphia, out at the airport, though it is 1 degrees milder, there we go again, 60 degrees through center city, 55 in trenton, 57 degrees in wilmington, and the temperatures are as mild as we're going to be finding them. they are going to definitely be dropping, however, over the next day or so, so we saw some

temperatures in the 70s, wednesday, thursday, friday, today we're looking at right around 68 degrees, and tomorrow, we will probably stop in the 50's. our future weather, as we put this into motion, things look pretty nice as we go through the day, again, our temperature coming up this afternoon get to go about 68 degrees. it gets cooler after that, though, and we will talk about how much cooler coming up. nicole? >> carol, thank you. well, philadelphia police spent the night investigating a deadly shooting outside a local bar. now, they hope surveillance video will lead to an arrest. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson live at police headquarters with more on that story, steve? >> reporter: police video, and hopefully they say they can catch the suspect before too long. we want to take you to some video we have from the scene, eighth and hunting park, sometime after 10:00 o'clock last night, police say a 22 year old man, coming out of a local bar, when those shots rang out, when they got on scene they found that man laying outside of the bar,

with several wounds, they took him to temple hospital, where he was pronounced dead, unfortunately, shortly before 10:45, the good news here is detectives say the trail is hot. police have shell casings, and they have witnesses cents cents, that they're interviewing, they've canvas add neighborhood where they think the suspect escaped from. they have that information because they have surveillance video that comes from a local store in the area, as well. so, we spoke to a police captain, who says they're putting altogether. >> we're trying to piece everything together, like i said, an ongoing investigation, and we have our homicide units on top of everything. and probably do a number every interviews, and probably getting warrants for couple of houses cents. >> and again, he mentioned the warrants for the houses. they have that information because in the video that they have, from surveillance, they see the suspect running toward the direction of those houses, and so they think he's taken sanctuary in one of those, also, identifying several

people that may have helped him in his escape, as well. so looking into that this morning, it is the latest from police headquarters, steve patterson, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". steve, thank you. former congress woman, gabrielle giffords, bridges her message every better gun control to our area. giffords took part in a rounds table discussion in bensalem, to talk about protecting women from gun violence. several regional leaders and law enforcement officials were also there. now, earlier this week, giffords launched new initiative calling for stronger gun laws. >> women can lead the way. we stand for common sense. we stand for responsibilities. we can change our laws. we can win elections. please, join your voice with mine. >> now, giffords survived a gunshot wounds to the head during a campaign event in arizona three years ago. well, authorities in delaware charge a mother and her boyfriend in the death after four year old girl. tan asia, and willie reader,

arrested in new castle, now face murder charges. milligan's daughter autumn died on august 8th. now the cause of death was found last week to be blunt force tram a. that's when the arrest warrants were issued. milligan and read remember being held on $106,000 bail each. well, caught on camera, investigators in south philadelphia need your help to identify two burglary suspect. two men broke into all city rental in grays ferry back on october 7th. according to authorities, they used a car to ram through the security gate before he is name different vehicle that was later recovered. police ask anyone with information to give them a call. well, clean up is underway after the fire that forced the historic city tavern in old city to close. the fire started in a dumpster outside of the restaurant at second and walnut. there was cents in damage to the building, and there were no injuries. city tavern is expected to reopen very soon. atlantic city trump taj

mahal takes big grand gamble, headed to court. federal bankruptcy court judge made decision angering local 54 of the unite here union. they called the move unfair and vowing to fight. but the casino officials say the move makes it possible for that casino to stay open. governor chris christie signs a revised sports betting bill in new jersey, the bill would partially repeal the state's ban on sports wagering. now, some professional sports leagues and the ncaa are fighting in court to prevent sports betting in the states. poker comes to philadelphia. twenty-four new poker tables arrived at sugarhouse casino, will be part of the city's first poker room expected to open to the public next month. pretty embarrassing moment for the president and the first lady. while dining at new york cavel a, president obama says his credit card was declined. the worse feeling, isn't it? well, it turns out the consumer financial protection bureau suspected fraud because

he doesn't use his card enough. of course the first lady pulled out her credit card, and that one was accepted. so, michelle's got it covered. most people never get a chance to see the sistine chapel let alone attend a party there, right? pope francis reportedly agreed porche to hold a concert inside the famed chapel as part of a corporate tour of rome. proceeds will benefit the needy. good cause there. the vatican down played the report explaining that the chapel can never be rented because it is not a commercial location. well the catholic church should know by tomorrow if its bishops will really be welcome to go gays and catholics who are divorced and remarried. vote on final report compiling two weeks of discussion at the vatican could be contentious, bishop's response to this week's interim report raised questions about language and long held beliefs. our pat ciarrocchi has cents that story. >> reporter: pope francis told 190 bishops to speak frankly and without fear.

they have argued, and that's after a mid senate report got international coverage about welcoming gays for their gifts, and excepting co-habitate g, unmarried, and divorced couples. bishops have asked for more church teaching to be part of the report, english speaking bishops even asked that the language change from welcoming gays to providing for gays. michael viola, a gay philadelphia cat link, felt the initial change in tone to be encouraging. >> basically saying look, stop shutting this group of people out. you can't grow as an organization. you can't grow asomugha church by limiting who can be members. >> with dignity philadelphia, a catholic lgbp community that's found a home in the lower level after episcopal church. dignity masses follow a traditional catholic service. >> i've always looked at the perspective this is who i am, this is how god made me, and i'm okay with that. and god's okay with that. >> the question is are the

there, also, off to the west, couple of showers, and they are associated with front that's going to be coming through here. and changing our weather. it will make it breezy around here today, but in the 60s, but by tomorrow, our highs will only be in the 50's, and the winds will be blowing tomorrow by sunday night we could be finding some of the coldest air of the season, and that could herald the end of the growing season for number of locations cents, maybe specially to the north. we will still have to see whether that's actually going to happen, if that frost does occur on that late sunday night early monday morning time period. otherwise, monday we eventually get back, right around 60 degrees, in the afternoon. future weather, let's put this into motion, what do we see? not much. couple of clouds maybe by the time we hit 6:00 tonight. and to the north, couple of sprinkles, and then by the time we get to tomorrow, 4:00 a.m., things are looking still pretty nice, few clouds, but that will keep the temperatures up somewhat. by 2:00 in the afternoon, then, we will be dealing with some fairly nice weather conditions. then sunday afternoon, things

looking pretty nice around here. as we go through time, by monday afternoon, are there showers to the north and the west? i think most of the rest of the area should be staying dry on monday, just we start to pick up these shower chances, by the time we get to monday night specially. so, we will continue to monitor that. boy, bermuda, have they been monitoring this. that's gonzalo, hurricane, category two hurricane, winds right now ten a miles an hour, and it is moving to the north-northeast about 22 miles an hour. so fortunately, this thing is moving away from bermuda. they can start to regroup after a very powerful hurricane showed up on their doorstep. around here, we're just dealing with the fall weather. and that would be the change in these leaves, expect that change to be enhanced by any of these colder temperatures that will start to see overnight. we have a moderate change in our area. it is a high change, through the lehigh valley and right at peak through the poconos, so if you are lucky enough to go up, there you will be able to see some beautiful leaf
