tonight philadelphia honors a young international good evening, i'm chris may. jess is cough. the board of education in sayreville will continue the indefinite fit suspensions of five members of its football coaching staff. but as todd quinones tells us many who came to tonight's meeting spoke out in their defense. >> wewhat do you have to say. >> no comment. >> reporter: school officials said little beyond the basics. >> suspensions were approved tonight as part of our agenda for the coaches. >> reporter: five football coaches including head coach george nadir has been suspended indefinitely. seven players have been suspended several charged with sex crimes. at tuesday night's school boards meeting many in attendance including players spoke up in support of the head coach.

>> i just thought it was like overshot, like over exaggerated 'cause it's just -- i know that it's never happened any of the way anybody ever said. >> knowing coach for four years i know he would never have a second tolerated any form of hazingly. >> reporter: the football season was canceled after allegations of hazing that allegedly took place inside the locker room on four separate occasions. some feel the head coach is being made out to be a scapegoat but others aren't so sure. >> if i was teaching math and stepped out to the hallway to speak to my supervisor for three or four minutes and this activity that took place in the locker room took place in the back of my classroom, man i think i would be out of the building in seconds. >> reporter: in the meantime as for the students who are charged with sex crimes, if they're found guilty and convicted, they'll have to register as sex offenders. reporting from sayreville high school, todd quinones, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> new at 11 o'clock tonight, video just in of a serious car crash in center city philadelphia.

police say that a driver lost control and slammed into a building at ninth and chestnut. the driver was hurt and taken to jefferson hospital. no one inside the building, though, was injured. now to a wild ride. dozens of people speeding through philadelphia streets for hours captivating some, terrorizing others. this dirt bike caravan was intended as a show of respect for a fellow rider who was murdered last week but it turned into a dangerous ride. it was a lawless reckless ride. dozens of men on dirt bikes and atv's speeding through city streets. fishtailing four wheelers and racing sometimes against the flow of traffic and terrifying pedestrians like this woman nearly run down in a crosswalk. it went on for hours and over several miles in southwest philadelphia, center city and north philadelphia. they even soon passed school buses packed with children wheelly popping thrill seekers putting young lives in danger. >> this is something we can't

have. >> reporter: despite that and despite the fact that dirt bikes and atv's are illegal on city streets, chopper three saw not one traffic stop. the riders eventually gathered at a memorial service for noted dirt biker kyrell tyler a 23-year-old father gunned down last week in southwest philadelphia. his mother tells "eyewitness news" the display on city streets was a tribute to her son. >> friends out here riding the bikes in his memory, you know, and they've been very supportive. everybody out here has been very supportive. >> reporter: philadelphia police report no accidents and no injuries from the caravan. well, right now there's rain popping up in our area. meteorologist kathy orr is tracking what we might see overnight. >> area of rotating showers around the region heading towards the delaware valley moving toward the northeast. more to come overnight and even during the day tomorrow but there were storms earlier today especially in ocean county and chopper three captured some of these strong

storms that had hail, frequent lightning and some of these storms showed some rotation within them creating a water spout off the jersey shore in ocean county. this is the view. this courtesy of barnegat bay island new jersey facebook page, here's a rotating thunderstorm and right here you can see the water spout system it is a tornado over water with that rotation but often much weaker than a tornado. still, gusty winds but safely offshore. we are looking at conditions that are going to be pretty rainy and windy overthe next couple of days. future weather shows the showers down through baltimore and washington moving toward the philadelphia area, especially tomorrow morning. they'll be rotating through the region. so, occasional rain for the next couple days and also talking about wind. tomorrow morning when you wake up, hit the road winds gusting to 27 miles an hour in philadelphia, also in trenton, gusting to 29 in wilmington and gusting to 22 miles an hour in wildwood and those winds will be picking up over the next 24 to 36 hours.

"eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco is live at the national constitution center with morton -- more on tonight's moving event. >> reporter: her words and experiences are well i don't understand her year, she was given philadelphia's highest honor one she accepted gladly. >> 2014 liberty medal. >> reporter: in a touching tribute to freedom and education, 17-year-old malala use use the youngest nobel prize winner received this

year's liberty medal for her right to children's right for education. >> i speak for those without voice. i speak for every child whose right to education has been neglected. >> reporter: at 11, malala began writing published journal entries about living under the taliban rule in pakistan and against keeping women out of school. >> i had two option. one was not to speak and wait to be killed and the second was to speak and then be killed and i chose the second one because i did not want to live in that situation of oppression. >> reporter: six years ago three taliban gunmen boarded her school bus and shot her in the head. >> i realized that liberty comes at a high price and the taliban, they take me in order to silence me. weakness, fear and hopelessness died and strength, power and courage was born. >> the courage and hope

embodied by malala should serve as a call to action. >> thank you malala. >> reporter: malala's voice has inspired world leaders and given hope to young women. her journal entries were read on stage by local teens with their own accomplishments. >> she had a long fight and now she's here and her stories are being told everywhere. >> for her to go beyond those boundaries it really inspires everybody. >> reporter: and during tonight's ceremony, malala announced that the hundred thousand dollar reward that comes with the liberty medal will go to educating can children in pakistan. outside the constitution center, i'm diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, diana thank you very much. also new tonight a giant in the world of journalism has died. ben bradlee the long time editor to steered the washington post through watergate and the pentagon papers died after a long battle with alzheimer's disease. in 2012 bradlee was awarded

the congressional medal of freedom by president obama. he was 93 years old. a philadelphia city council committee advanced a bill that adds hate crimes to the city's code. the public safety committee held hearings on the bill that would cover crimes motivated by hate based on sexual orientation gender identity or disability. the bill was born from a crime that stunned many in the community back in september, a group of young men and women accused of assaulting a gay couple while allegedly yelling gay slurs. >> watching that shameful video as a member of city council, for me the next question is, and what can the city do about this? >> now, the bill would amend the city code to add penalties on top of crimes. 90 days could be addd to a jail term or a $2,000 fine could be imposed. this is not, however, amend the state's criminal code. let's go to the poconos now. school will reopen there tomorrow. classes were canceled today

because of a possible sighting of the accused state trooper killer eric frein yesterday. a law enforcement officer reportd that possible sighting near a post office in the town of swiftwater yesterday. that happened not far from pocono mountain east high school where there was another possible sighting reported on friday. frein has been on the run for more than a month now. there's new information tonight in the story we first told you about friday night. a suspect is in custody in connection with the murder of a correctional officer in southwest philadelphia. a relative found the body of freda denny inside of her home on 63rd street on friday night. police say the suspect is a friend of the victim and is now being held on a probation violation. investigators are waiting for dna tests to determine if he'll be charged with murder. new at 11 o'clock tonight police are searching for two suspects in a series of atlantic county burglaries. they're trying to track down carlos solare and tyler

gallagher. they're accused of breaking into sheds and garages and stealing everything from lawn equipment to motorcycles. four other suspects are currently facing charges. well, an update now on the enterovirus in new jersey. health officials in hamilton township mercer county now say that a child thought to have the virus has tested negative. that child does attend yardville elementary school, the same school attended by four year old eli waller. he will lie died from enterovirus just last month. we have encouraging news for one of the nurses infected with ebola. here is the latest. doctors in maryland have upgraded nina pham from fair to good condition. that dallas nurse was infected while treating thomas duncan, the first person to die from ebola here in the u.s. meantime the rhode island cameraman infected with ebola while working in liberia no longer has the virus.

driving drowsy. it may be as dangerous as driving drunk. 40 percent of american drivers admit to falling asleep or nodding off at the wheel. that leads to 100,000 accidents each year and as many as 6,000 are deadly. today for the first time transformation officials held a forum on drowsy driving. doctors say it's time to get off the road if you're yawning repeatedly, if you have heavy eyelids or if you forget the last few miles you've drench new tonight, normal patco high speedline service resumes at midnight and that is also good news for drivers on the ben franklin bridge. patco says the majority of its track rehab work is now complete and its regular service is back during the week. still, there could be single track service on the weekends for the foreseeable future. lanes on the westbound side of the ben franklin that have been closed due to construction activity, they'll

be opened starting with tomorrow morning's rush hour. here's some more good news. prices at the pump copter to fall. in fact they're now at their lowest levels in three years. aaa puts the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline at just $3.09 a gallon, down a whopping 60 cents from this year's high back in april. well, a south jersey nurse has turned an idea for potato chips into a million bucks. manako mcbeth from westville gloucester county came up with the winning new flavor for lays potato chips, wasabi ginger. that idea beat out the likes of cappuccino mango salsa and cheddar bacon mac and cheese. another major retailer could be the latest victim of a cyber attack. staples confirms it's investigating a possible credit card data preach at some of its stores. if it discovers an issue staples says that customers won't be responsible for any

fraudulent charges. you pick up the phone and all you want to do is speak to a real person but instead, you get a maze of computerized voices asking you to push one for this and two for that. but as three on your side consumer reporter jim donovan found out customer service is now getting a makeover with companies connecting you to a real serviceperson you can actually see. >> hey, doc. >> hey, how's it going. >> reporter: video chat customer service is what sold ariel from ordering his glasses online. when he logged on to the video shop optometrists. >> i see you received your glasses. they're looking g they are aligned properly. >> it was definitely cool an big feature. if i had any questions or concerns, that was very comforting to me. >> reporter: mason eyewear's new video chat feature lets them see eye to eye with customers and it's quite popular. >> being able to, you know,

explain or demonstrate certain features of frame design or shape, things like that definitely gives us a much greater opportunity. >> reporter: in fact, video chat customer service is growing across the country. >> they're valuing the customers. realizing spending a little more to make sure that customer is happy is less expensive than acquiring a new customer. >> reporter: american express launched a new pilot program a real person is right on the tablet waiting to help. >> we've had customers who have taken the ipad and introduced our customer care professional to their family members. were want to be able to provide service in a way that customers are living and they're living digitally. >> reporter: at hertz car rental locations pick up a phone on one of these terminals and you can video chat with a real rep. >> the face to face interaction benefits the customer by creating a personalized experience and minimizing the wait time. >> reporter: ariel says video chat customer service certainly works for him. >> i never have to leave home to get a new pair of glasses or try on a new pair of

improving. weather-wise conditions will be deteriorating and then by the weekend, it looks great. so hope you have a chance to enjoy that. down the shore looking through skycam3 where skies are cloudy but temperatures still holding on in the up are 50's to lower 60's. resorts all lit up in pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month. our live neighborhood network takes us to bishop eustace in pennsauken where the temperature is 58 degrees. we had a soccer game late noon, night fell, the lights went on, the weather stayed dry, the game was over. hopefully we had a victory. storm scan3 showing a broad area of low pressure rotatorring rain throughout the region in a counterclockwise fashion. coming down from scranton, harrisburg towards baltimore and washington and then lifting back up into philadelphia and i want to draw your attention right here to sussex county delaware where we had heavy rain and a few moments ago hail indicator. very heavy rain heading towards the delaware beaches possibly crossing over the bay into cape may. strong thunderstorm between

georgetown and llewes delaware so please be aware of that. not severe but looks like some very heavy rain, some torrential downpours. right now in philadelphia looking at 60 degrees n-millville 50, dover 55. 49 in the poconos. this area of low pressure slowly pulls away and will take some of the heavy rain with it. for your wednesday rain and wind with winds gust to go 30 miles an hour, temps in the 60's. the wind around this low of course is counterclockwise so we're getting this northerly wind and as the storm pulls away, it takes the rain and the wind into new england where the storm strengthens, we'll have gusts to 30 miles an hour late thursday and even thursday morning. temperatures will be in the 50's and then friday we dry it out. it will be very pleasant long after the rain is gone. still a little wind but temperatures will be back into the 60's. so, this is what we expect. future weather shows tomorrow morning some rain rotating through. then during the afternoon and the evening another bout of rain and then as the storm pulls away you'll see that heavy band of rain lifting north as well so by thursday evening it will be mainly dry

but still cloudy. here's a look at what we expect through thursday and occasional rain in some areas between a half inch and an inch of rain, the winds out of the north so it will be a cool wind and winds gusting to 30 miles an hour at times from the city to the shore. overnight scattered showers, the low 52. occasional rain for your wednesday, the high 60. on the exclusive eyewitness weather seven-day forecast, the coolest day is thursday. then temperatures begin to rise and after that, a perfect forecast for friday right through next tuesday. that's a look at the seven-day forecast. we will be back with beasley and sports r

>> ♪ >> the residences at the ritz-carlton in center city philadelphia are glowing pink tonight. cbs3 and the cw philly as you know have teamed up with susan g. komen philadelphia for lights for the cure during breast cancer awareness month in october. landmarks across the area display their pink lights as a reminder for women to schedule a mammogram. lights for the cure is now in its 13th year. well, new at 11 o'clock tonight, chester community charter school rolls out the red carpet and "eyewitness news" is there. this is the first ever night of the arts event on the east campus. dozens of students and their families were there participating in a variety of art and musical activities. night of the art will also be prsented on the charter school's west and upland campus in the coming weeks. we'll be right back.
