the benches clear during game 2 of the world series. captioning fundedby cbs . this this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, october 23rd, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie. we begin in canada where a second terror attack in three days has struck the heart of canada. he was a canadian citizen with a criminal record who recently converted to islam. the suspect gunned down an honor guard at point blank range before he was killed by a heroic government official. kris van cleachris vakris van cn with more. good morning. >> good morning. people across the country are expressing anger and shock over

what happened yesterday and many are asking the same question. how did a gunman get inside the parliament building. just hours after an attack on an honor guard standing guard, the country's prime minister called the violence an act of terror. >> we will not be intimidated. canada will not be intimidated. in fact, this will lead us to strengthen our resolve and double our effort. >> a gunman killed the honor guard. politicians locked themselves in meeting rooms. h was killed by the sergeant-at-arms. the president spoke with the prime minister last night. >> i pledge as always to make sure our national security teams are coordinated very closely. >> reporter: parts of parliament hill including memorial hill are closed by police. it's the second deadly attack against military servicemembers

in canada in just three days raising questions that the violence is connected to canada joining the fight against the islamic state in syria. >> they're very worry thad this movement is motivating others not only to come and fight in places lie iraq and syria but echoing the calls from al qaeda to attack in place. >> reporter: officials say they'll continue to fight around the world to fight terror. we've learned a little bit more about the suspect. his birth name is michael joseph paul. he was born in quebec and recently converted to islam. he does have a history of run-ins with police and a history of drug addiction. now, he was shot and killed by the sergeant-at-arms. a man named kevin vickers, 57 years old, spent nearly 30 years as a royal canadian mounted security. he's being credited with saving lives for taking that action,

shooting and killing the suspect. anne-marie? >> all right. kris van cleave in ottawa. thank you, kris. a maryland man was arrested after he jumped the white house fence. he was not armed and immediately apprehended by the secret service. craig boswell reports. >> reporter: fox news cameras caught a man trying to fight off dogs. he jumped the fence but agents southbound dued and arrested him. he's identified from bel air, maryland. the white house was put on lockdown as a precaution. the secret service recently added new febss and posted more guards around it. that came after a serious breach last september. >> gonzalez made it all the way into the east room with a knife before he was stopped. that breach was the tipping point for former secret service

chief julia pearson. she resigned. craig boswell, cbs news, the white house. a seattle area nurse is being monitored for ebola this morning. health officials say she is showing no signs of the disease but recently returned from africa where she treated patients. meanwhile the governor has quarantined six others who returned from west africa. starting next week, travelers from three west african nations affected by the ebola outbreak will be monitored for symptoms. they will check in with health officials and have their temperature taken twice a day for 20 2 1 days.

work more efficiently in case any new ebola cases arise. >> public health and infrastructure systems that we're now putting in place across the board around the country should give the american people the confidence that we're going to be in a position to deal with any additional cases of ebola. >> the president added he is cautiously optimistic about the ebola situation in the u.s. but a new "associated press" poll finds that nearly half of americans are very or extremely concerned about a widespread outbreak. nine out of ten think there should be more screening procedures. anne-marie? >> thank you, susan. this morning we're watching two storm systems, one in the northwest and one in the northeast. a nor'easter roared up the coast on wednesday. this morning flood watches are posted in massachusetts, new

hampshire, and maine. and in oregon, high wind and pounding rain hit the portland area. wind gusts reached 66 miles per hour. they saw 1.8 inches of rain, breaking the record for the day. lawyers for four former blackwater security guards who were found guilty of shooting more than 30 iraqis back in 2007 say they will appeal. the incident sparked an international uproar. 14 iraqis were killed and 17 others wounded by the private guards hired to protect american diplomats in baghdad. the guards claimed self-defense. following an 11-week trial, a federal jury found them guilt of murder. three others of voluntary manslaughter. coming up on the "morning news," an ak demming scandal expected to affect thousands of students and a hearing on ray rice's suspension. this is the "cbs morning news."

basketball team bake the national champ, investigators say academic fraud was always in play. deborah krauder started a scheme to enroll students in classes that never met and had only one minimal requirement. >> they didn't take notes, have to stay awake, they didn't have to meet with professors, and the only coursework they had to do was write a single paper. >> reporter: kenneth was to investigation it. the department chairman was also in on the scam which kept hundreds of athletes academically eligible to play. it's estimated more than 1,400 were eligible to play. the coaches say they had no

on the "cbs moneywatch," big tobacco tells workers they can't smoke. and help with managing your g-mail. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. here own wall street investors will be watching more and the unemployment for last week. the dow lost 153 points on wednesday. the s&p 500 was down 14. the nasdaq fell 36 points. >> apple pay users who were double charged because of a glitch will get refunds. bank of america is apologizing for these double billings. it affects customers who made purchases with apple pay. that's the new mobile payment service that apple launched this week. the glitch involves about 1,000 transactions. google has created a new app called inbox. it will let g-mail users find

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. in sports, the world series heads to san francisco tied at a game apiece. the usually light-hitting kansas city royals knocked in five runs in six innings to put last night's game away. three consecutive rbi-producing hits were tapped by omar infante's blast. two exchanged words and the benches cleared but that's pretty much all there was. k.c. beat the giants 5-2. the world series finishes

tomorrow night. ♪ o canada we stand on guard for the ♪ following the attack on the canadian parliament, the hockey game between senators and ottawa was postponed. earlier the maple leafs were on lockdown but in pittsburgh before last night's kbam between pittsburgh and the philadelphia flyers the crowd sang the canadian "national anthem" to show support and honor the soldier killed in ottawa. the flyers went on to beat the penguins, 5-3. the solar eclipse happens today. we'll have more on that coming up. this is the "cbs morning news."

a bear cub was wandering down an isle. police eventually scooped up the cub in a shopping basket and turned it over to wildlife officials. the bear was not hurt but it will spend the next few months in a rehab center before it's released back into the wild. and people in nevada are becoming all too familiar with bear encounters. as reported, the bears are getting older. >> reporter: police are after a prowler in this reno neighborhood and carl lackey knows just how to track him down. >> he looked like a 300-pounder or 400 pounder. >> that's a big bear.

>> it is. >> lackey is a biologist for the national wildlife. they've tagged nearly 100 black bear. that's a record. most were captured during an unusual territory. the extreme drought has dried up river and depleted their natural food sources forcing them into communities. >> is this fairly typical? >> yeah, it is. bear sushi. >> they need up to eat up to 30,000 calories a day, the equivalent of more than 100 cheeseburger. >> there's better habitat in these neighborhoods than what they can find in the forest. everybody's got fruit trees, a lot urban ponds. a food be up faye for the bear. >> this is a bear paw print? >> that's exactly right. >> reporter: liz says three

bears have climbed into her backyard this month. this bear ate her fish in her pond. >> are you concerned that because they found food they might return? >> absolutely. they're starving right now and they're looking for food. i don't know if we're going to be the next casualties. >> reporter: they have been even more invasive, breaking and entering to raid the kitchen. >> these are scratches from bear claws? yep. >> pride it right open. >> yes. >> reporter: they pride his window and smashed his car window. >> there's a sense of security everybody has and they kind of lost that. >> reporter: animal rights activists says black bears rarely attack people. they're just following their keen sense of smell. >> they're always searching for food. if we can provide an easy way to provide it, they're going to do it.
