11:15 pm
jim: there's dean spanos. the chairman of the board, the president of the chargers. checking out a few texts. a few encouraging texts, i'm sure, after the missed field goal. a little over 6:00 to go. as scifres takes over at the point of the miss, the 43. best starting point of the evening. they've driven in for touchdowns the last two times they've had it. dump it off across the middle. floyd is tripped up by roby. nice tackle by the rookie. by the way, double-header day on the way sunday --
11:16 pm
jim: we're going to be in pittsburgh for the steelers hosting of indianapolis and everything gets started at noon eastern time with "the nfl today." second and 7. and again they take what's available underneath and they've got green for a first down, ladarius green. phil: big, fast tight end. come with a blitz this time. what does that do? that opens up the underneath guys running the cross like ladarius green. haven't heard his name much. because malcolm floyd is back. antonio gates is playing great. but he's big, maybe the fastest dry on the team. you give him those situations, he can make big plays. jim: his first catch tonight. good for a first down. rivers now has his -- has hit his last seven throws. he's going for the big ball. and that is intercepted by
11:17 pm
rahim moore. he can get up and run with it. and finally decked by johnnie troutman at the 28-yard line. rivers was trying to find malcolm floyd deep. phil: it was a double move. aqib talib was all over it. philip rivers just lost his patience. it was never there. jim: that might be down by contact. phil: i think so. jim: floyd had a hands on his back. phil: he's hoping his big receive consider go up and make a play. but rahim moore plays basically every single play this year as a safety. good job reading the quarterback and going over there and securing the catch. watch how he catches it. with his arms and his body.
11:18 pm
yeah. there's contact. so this is definitely going to be down. jim: the football will be at about the 3. phil: they were in contact as they go up. as they hit each other. you can see the arm of malcolm floyd on rahim moore. jim: peyton's already got his offensive unit and he's waving them back to retreat. referee: after review, the intercepting player was down by contact at the 4-yard line. please set the game clock to 4:53. first down, denver. jim: rahim moore's such a different player. was missed most of -- all of last year, but two years removed from the flacco throw in the playoffs. john fox. mixesing it up there. phil: i don't know.
11:19 pm
i think that was all good stuff. i think john fox is going, that's what we need you to do, they've had so many safety troubles over the first two years. this year there there have been no problems with rahim moore or t.j. ward. jim: first down. underneath goes hillman for three. and that gives him 100 on the nose. all philip can do is shake his head, three touchdowns and two picks tonight. phil: they accomplished this, as we watched the game, especially here in the second half, they threw the ball enough, it did tire the denver broncos's pass rush out. they were not getting to him as fast or collapsing the pocket like they did early in the game. jim: six linemen in for the broncos. if they run it here, might think about utilizing the run here.
11:20 pm
hillman with another three. they're going to let the clock run. with 4:00 to go. third down on the way. also on the way, the mazda postgame show d. interviews and anall sills. of tonight's game. -- analysis. of tonight's game. they'll meet again, their second matchup, at san diego, december 14. phil: of course the chargers were hoping here, they'll get a lot of injured players back. but they have to have a stop here. peyton manning of course is going to be extremely kavell with the football -- careful with the football. jim: got his first down. welker holds on even though he is pancaked by weddle. phil: eric weddle, they're waiting on the play, but the time something so good that he just can't get over there and make the play. here's eric weddle. look, he comes down and hooks up in between them.
11:21 pm
eric weddle just gets up and shakes his head. jim: now inside 3:00 to go. jim: hillman for seven. now with 20 carries on the night and 109 yards. phil: you look at this football team, the offense. we have talked about the broncos. hillman, emmanuel sanders both in there. it gives them speed, they're much more dynamic. jim: time-out call by san diego. again, what a night it's been for sanders. there's more than one guy named sanders who was ready for primetime tonight. not just deion, but so too was emmanuel. phil: yeah. i think that play right before
11:22 pm
half, playing that aggressive coverage. that's the one to look back on and go, that was a mistake. emmanuel sanders, one of the reasons they wanted him, the offensive coordinator learned under st. louis. and he wanted a route runner like asack bruce and they thought he was close to that -- isaac bruce and they thought he was close to that. jim: next gen stats have him credited with 968 yards of running tonight in total, of all the plays. 120 receiving yards. that's thompson hurdling ahead for another first down. time-out called again by the chargers. their last. phil: bring the tight end, virgil green, across. everybody chasing the football. thompson cuts it back.
11:23 pm
good run. really, when you look at it, starting corners are out, you have to see san diego if they're willing to fight. jim: the broncos will goen to a three-game road trip to new england, which will be our national double-header game coming up in 10 days' time. then at oakland, at st. louis. they had their bye week early in the season. week four. san diego meanwhile will be at miami next week. where they haven't won in 30 years. then they'll have the bye week. thompson, another four. which will bring us to the 2:00 warning. jim: they played three close games a year ago, these two. including the divisional round
11:24 pm
here at denver. won by seven by the broncos before they met up with new england and won the a.f.c. championship a week later. but they did not score over 30 points in any one of the three games last year, the broncos. tonight they put up 35.
11:25 pm
jim: peyton won't have to stay up quite as late tonight returning texts like he did on sunday night. so many out there to congratulate him. wide ranging friendsships from the country music field to of course in football, his old coaches, legendary quarterbacks ofiesteryear, current quarterbacks. all the assistants.
11:26 pm
golfers from tiger woods to phil mickelson to bubba watson. on and on. you know how he is about returning texts. he spent probably about as much time sunday night just saying, hey, thank you, as he did -- as long as it took to beat san francisco in the game itself. phil: i think now he can sit back and cherish what he's done and maybe celebrate a little. because he did that sunday night. the turnaround is so quick, you can't even sit there and enjoy the victory for a day. jim: 96 hours, in 196 -- in 96 hours they put up, what, 77 points. referee: false start, offense number 71, five-yard penalty, second down. phil: he's getting mad. he gets mad at his players, the coaches. this team he's -- time he's mad at the fans. jim: we've had a chance to see in person denver three times, we've seen everybody from seattle to new england.
11:27 pm
this is the best team in football. phil: right now there's no doubt in my mind they're the best team in football. so many weapons on offense, peyton being the quarterback, they can do everything on the defense side. like i said early in the game, they match up. jim: thompson has a pair of touchdowns tonight. picks up five. we thank demarcus ware for being miked up tonight. here's a word from him a moment ago. >> when i beat around the corner i'm like right here trying to swat. he just returns back. >> i'm going to go around the corner and go like this, boom, and spin back. he's going to be right there running that way. yeah. phil: that's all he can talk about. i'm going to get this rivers. jim: he's loving his time here in denver. phil: yes. he was talking about making rivers step up and then swing inside and get the sack. jim: third and 5.
11:28 pm
jim: time-out call by peyton. again, the "mazda postgame show"land coming up shortly. when you look inside that 6-1 record, that includes wins against indianapolis, arizona, san francisco and san diego. pretty impressive. phil: it is impressive. their defensive coordinator said this team is better than last year. we've noticed that too all year long. jim: the broncos, who have gone on to claim the number one seed in their conference the last two years. looking at a third year. just now week eight. reaching the halfway point. looking like the team to beat
11:29 pm
when it comes to that number one overall seed going into playoff time for the american football conference. improving to 6-1. they also won in the division against kansas city week two. that was a hard-fought game. what a job put together by coach reid, talking about a team designated -- decimated by injury. john elway. he had a big offseason. some of his acquisitions. phil: i'm trying to fith figure out how they got all the players here under the salary cap. john elway shoss shown -- has shown everybody a great example. jim: another time-out called by the broncos. throwback thursday. focused on john elway. two-time super bowl champion. 300 career touchdown passes. and going out with those super bowl wins.
11:30 pm
phil: just physically, one of the most gifted quarterbacks that's really ever played in the league. big, strong, can shake off tackles. really good scrambler. can move, throw on the run. he played in an era, in a style that wasn't all about him just throwing the football. when they needed it late in games, seemed like he always came through. jim: colquitt. that's returned by allen to the 33. with just 18 seconds remaining. what do you see for san diego now after this 5-1 start, losing two games in a span of four days to drop to 5-3? phil: i thought before the season started they could be a surprise team because they got some corners. verrett, they have brandon flowers, injuries have really hurt them. they've got to get healthy so they can go down and win some of these games. their schedule, very tough at
11:31 pm
the end. look at that, baltimore, new england, down in miami. that's not going to be easy. it will be hot. miami's naft. they have pass rushers -- miami's fast. they have pass rushers. tannehill playing better. playing very well. jim: they'll just run it. oliver for the first time tonight sees open space in the running game. and that will do it. phil: the thing that makes this team different than the one we saw last year is the defense. it is much improved. jim: fourth time in denver team history they have 200-yard receivers and emmanuel sanders and demaryius thomas. plus a 100-yard rusher in ronnie hillman. they put up 35 point against the number three scoring defense in the league. without a giveaway tonight, the broncos. did not allow a sack.
11:32 pm
and they advance to 6-1 with their fourth straight victory since coming out of the bye. phil: they're hot right now. they really are. on both sides of the football. one of those streaks. can you keep this going? can you keep playing at this level we're watching them play on both sides of the football? jim: a couple guys that one day will meet again at canton. welker didn't have a real busy night of it but he had a key fumble recovery in that fourth quarter, just after san diego had cut it to 35-21 and sanders had the ball stripped. and had the chargers recovered, who knows? with plenty of time to go, they would have had the ball in plus
11:33 pm
territory. phil: that might have big as big a play -- that might have been as big a play as any in the whole football game. jim: peyton still has lost only one time inside the a.f.c. west since joining the broncos three years ago and that was to san diego here a year ago. but a great record inside this division. he's with tracy. tracy: thanks a lot. peyton, one week it's demaryius, it's one week it's julius. tonight it was emmanuel. how difficult is it for this offense to stop with all the weapons? >> that's what we're trying to do is put pressure on a defense, create different matchups, move guys around. put them in different positions. i think that's the good thing. everybody's running full speed routes because they know the ball can come to them at any point. tonight was emmanuel's night in the passing game. a lot of the other guys made big plays. demaryius was hot. welker's third down conversion might have been the biggest play of the game. tracy: a win like this over a divisional opponent like san diego, what does it say about how difficult this team is to beat right now? >> well, they were injured.
11:34 pm
two of their normal starting secondary guys not playing. so that's two weeks in a row we've played teams with major injuries. we have taken care of business but we know next time around, playing these guys, it will be a different matchup. have a lot of respect for them, their offense is so hot, you have to keep up. our offense was challenged tonight. we knew we had to score points to keep up with their offense. tracy: a few more touchdowns to add to that record. >> thanks. i appreciate it. ok. tracy: jim? jim: it's now at 513. another virtuoso manning performance. coming up, the "mazda postgame show." so long from denver. you've been watching "thursday night football." we'll join the studio after this. if yand you're talking toevere rheumyour rheumatologiste me, about a biologic... this is humira. this is humira helping to relieve my pain and protect my joints from further damage. this is humira giving me new perspective.

11:37 pm
11:38 pm
james: we are live after emmanuel sanders put on a show. a three-touchdown night. catching every single touchdown thrown by peyton manning, numbers 511, 512, 513 in his illustrious future hall of fame career. it was a scoreless after one quarter and then all of a sudden the broncos offense got its sea legs under him. >> we all felt like it was a matter of time before peyton manning got going. another masterful performance by him.
11:39 pm
the only mistake he made was the interception by eric weddle that was turned over because of the penalty. but what i love is that each week is it seems to be somebody different. it seems to be emmanuel sanders this week and julius thomas next week and demaryius thomas the week before. he has full confidence in all these weapons and he streds the football around. >> i talked about it in pregame. peyton manning knows. he says, emmanuel sanders only had one touchdown on the season. i'll get him in the game tonight. he had three touchdowns tonight in this game. over 100 yards for the fourth time in his career. all four right here in denver. with that guy he calls a great leader, peyton manning. >> the other quarterback in this game, philip rivers, who was making his own case for the m.v.p. of the league. he completed 30 passes for 252 yards. but three touchdowns, a couple of interceptions, a couple of sacks, he got no help from the run game. that was the difference between this game and last year's game
11:40 pm
when ryan mathews ran for 127 yards. that was not the case, he had no help in the run. deion: what we know about this denver broncos team offensively, peyton's going to be peyton. he can pick whoever out to be the star of the game. he's just that darn good. he's the coordinator. but defensively, that's just -- this is where this team changed. this is where the offseason acquisitions came about. this is where demarcus ware and von miller, the most prolific pass rushers in the game right now. then you throw in aqib talib on the corner. he could shut down and play man for man with any receiver in the nfl. that's why this is a whole different team. the number six defense in the league. michael: this is a team with an attitude tonight. it looked like, because there's a lot of talent. but it looked like they're starting to come together and be a real good defensive. kurt: it looks like they're headed for the third year in a row. this is a very complete football team, the denver broncos. rich: yeah. they're the first six-win team
11:41 pm
in the a.f.c. every other division leader, however, has five wins. and has a chance to match them with a sixth win as the san diego lost their second in a row. both in division, two in four days. that other sanders is going to join us in a moment. as deion is looking at emmanuel. a reminder, beginning next week in carolina, as the saints take on the panthers, the remainder of the thursday night schedule can be seen exclusively on nfl network. we'll all be here along with j.b. and the guys. some huge games as the run to the playoffs starts beginning next week.
