a new york city doctor tests positive for ebola after his return from treating infected patients in west africa but the city says it is ready. >> every hospital in the city is prepared in the event that other patients come forward. alarming attack. man wielding a hatchet goes after four rookie police officers on a new york city street. a hero's welcome for the man who stopped the shooter in canada's capital. while new details begin to emerge about the gunman. and peyton manning lights up the scoreboard again but rips into a bronco team employee after the game.

this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, october 24th, 2014. captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the fourth person to be infected with ebola is here in new york city. he treated patients in new guinea before flying home a week ago. since then he has traveled around the city using public transportation. spencer didn't have symptoms until yesterday morning. health officials are working this morning to retrace his movements, and wendy gillette is just outside bellevue hospital. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. he remains in isolation at bellevue hospital this morning. although he moved around the city the last few days, health officials say there's no cause for concern. this video show the doctor being

rushed to the hospital. they took no chances. the emts wore full protective gear as they transferred him. mayor bill de blasio urged residents to stay calm after the 33-year-old tested positive for the virus, the city's first case. >> persons not exposed to the infected person's bodily fluids are not at all risking. >> he took his temperature twice a day. health officials said he was not contagious when he went for a jog, road the subway, went to a restaurant, took a car sefs and went bowling the night before he was diagnosed. still they're monitoring his fiancee and two friends who bowled with spencer. >> all three of these contacts are healthy and are being quarantined. >> reporter: the cdc has sent its own response team here to bellevue hospital to help doctors treating spencer. the agency confirmed spencer who

arrived at the jfk airport on october 17th went through multiple layers of screening but was allowed to enter the country because he did not have a fever or symptoms at the time. bellevue hospital is one of five hospitals in new york city designated as ebola treatment centers. the isolation unit was redesigned just for ebola patients. the lab is contain and only the nurses on floor will be responsible for spencer's care. as for spencer's fiancee and two friends, they're in quarantine. anne-marie? >> thank you. he was asked how this case differed from dallas. >> number one, we're very prepared. the city has a very orchestrated response with the hazmat team, a clear response from fdny and

from the 911 sim. we know how to handle the case through dispatch. also ppe, personal equipment. >> should we be concerned? >> at this point, we should be aware but not overly concerned. this is not a hardy virus. it does not live for prolonged periods of times on a surface. i don't think there's a high concern, i really don't. >> is there a test he could take beforehand? >> there is. there's a test that takes a few hours. but when you test early on, sometimes it can be negative. sometimes falsely negative. so it may not be pos to pick it up early on. >> well, this morning the health and human services official in charge of preparing and responding to crises like ebola testifies on capitol hill. the doctor's testimony comes amid growing concern and calls for strict travel baps. in a statement before the case

emerged she said ebola is a dangerous disease but there is hardly reason for panic. there is an epidemic of fear but not in the u stachlts we'll have much more coming up on "cbs this morning." well, new york city police are trying to figure out what provoked a hatchet-wielding man from wielding it at police officers. one was hit in the head, the other in an arm before shot and killed. >> reporter: he came out of nowhere. the four rookie cops on foot patrol didn't have a chance. investigators say the officers were posing for a picture along jamaica avenue near 162nd street when a 32-year-old man went on the attack with this 18-inch metal hatchet, hitting 24-year-old officer joseph meeker in the arm and 25-year-old officer kenneth

healy in the back of the head. as he continued the assault the remaining officers fired on the armed suspect who fell to the ground dropping the hatchet. the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. >> reporter: rudy asked us not to show his face but he gave cellphone pictures that showed officers rushing to his feet. healy was conscious when they took him to jamaica hospital which has a level one trauma center. >> something they thought would never happened absolutely happened. >> reporter: also treated at the hospital, a 29-year-old woman hit by a stray bullet. glass was shattered from the police trying to shoot e e et-wielding attacker. now in the wake of the

attack on apartment lan meant. they vn be told to avoid wearing their uniforms in public and this morning we're learning more about the man who opened fire. three years ago michael zehalf-bibeau told the judge he wanted to go to jail. he said if you can't keep me in, i'm going to do something. we also learned the 32-year-old had recently grownage tatd while obtaining a passport. he was not under surveillance or on a watch list, however, his criminal record should have prohibited him from possessing the rifle he used to kill a canadian soldier. investigators are trying to determine just how he obtained that gun. meanwhile the man who stopped attack is being celebrated as a hero. kris van cleave reports from ottawa. >> reporter: thunderous cheers erupted in parliament for the man who killed the gunman who

opened fire on wednesday. this video shows vickers with his gun drawn after taking down the suspect. stephen harper thanked him. earlier officers on high alert drew their weapons and arrested a man who got too close to prime minister harper. a gunman killed 24-year-old nathan cyrs cirillo at point bl range. officials say at least 30 shots were fired be ever the gunman was killed. law officials believes this video shows michael zehaf-bibeau. he traveled to the united states 20 times last year when he crossed minnesota by car. he was in ottawa waiting for a passport. he had plans to travel to syria. he had a lengthy rap sheet that

quarterly loss in 14 years. after the close of trading the egiant reported a loss. that was due to a surge in spending and music on video licensing and new product development including the introduction of the amazon fire smartphone. here on wall street today investors will be watching for more earnings. the dow gained 216 points thursday. the s&p 500 was up 23 points. the nasdaq rose 69 points. microsoft earnings were lifted by its cloud business. the net giant reported net income of $4.5 billion for the last quarter. microsoft says revenue from cloud service including software delivered over the internet more than doubled over the quarter. billionaire carl icahn says the

here's another look at this morning's top story. a doctor is the first patient diagnosed with ebola in no. dr. craig spebser had been treating patients in west africa. he returned a week ago. he traveled around the city but did not have symptoms until yesterday. he's being treated in an isolation unit at bellevue hospital. and liberia remains ground zero with the ebola outbreak. there have been more than 2,700 so far and the dead are highly contagious, so the government has made cremation mandatory. debora patta followed a burial team outside of the capital. >> reporter: life was hard enough before ebola. now it has one of the highest infection rates in the country.

it's feared this woman's brother died from ebola, but she's not being allowed anywhere near the body. the villages, too, say their farewell from a distance. this government worker has come to the city. >> they can't touch the body. they cook and eat and sleep together but one, two weeks before burial. and now we're saying don't allow the body to be there for 24 hours. >> reporter: the new rules don't go over well. sometimes villages hide bodies or bury them in secret to avoid the government. after a long walk into the bush, the burial team begins suiting up following strict new guidelines. the team discovers that someone has covered the body with a blanket which also means someone may have touched it and could spread the disease further, but nobody will own up. the body is unceremoniously

packed away in a double layer protective bag. the team sprays chlorine everywhere, then they move back toward the village stopping several times along the way. the body is just too heavy. devastated villagers are only given a glimpse of the shrouded body and then a brief burial. every piece of contaminated clothing thrown in. but inside that chlorinated body bag lies a man who was loved. the victim was just 22 years old. it is being met with strong resistance. for villagers it goes against ancient burial customs which means washing the dead. that's why it's so hard in rural
