>> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> now at 11 o'clock, remembering the victims of a school shooting tragedy. washington community comes together tonight to grieve. >> new tonight a-montgomery county neighborhood on edge after a string of home burglaries. how these cases can serve as a warning. >> and the governors of new york and new jersey take action imposing mandatory quarantine for travelers who have had contact with ebola patients. good evening, i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. the governors say ebola case in new york city demands tough action in order to keep people safe. >> here in philadelphia we've learned first responders will get stronger protection against this dangerous virus. "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones is live at broad and bainbridge in south philadelphia with more tonight. todd. >> reporter: and, jessica, due to safety concerns right now tonight, new protective gear is being delivered to the

philadelphia fire department first responders. outfits like these thin gowns are about to be replaced by higher level protection suits like the ones you see here. the fire commissioner confirms 1600 new jump suits have been ordered. they include hoods, masks, face shields and also body insulation bags will now be aboard all units to isolate any ebola patient from a caregiver making it safer for firefighters and medics. >> the suits themselves are going to cover every piece of exposed skin. the suit themselves will be more substantial and it will be thicker and better material. >> reporter: city officials promised last week they would upgrade the protection as the cdc changed its requirements. governors of new jersey and new york announced plans to quarantine for 21 days any medical personnel flying into j.f.k. and newark who had direct contact with ebola infected patients in west africa. >> these actions that we're taking jointing today i believe are necessary to protect the public health of the people of new jersey and

new york. >> reporter: this comes after a manhattan doctor who treater ebola patients in west africa tested positive for the virus but before his symptoms appeared he went bowling and traveled on the subway. >> our region is a dense region. a ride on a train can affect hundreds of people. several weeks of normal activity can affect several thousand individuals. >> what they're dying doing here the s trying to do extra protection. >> reporter: patients aren't contagious until they show symptoms he has some concerns about the impact the new rules may have on medical volunteers. >> if they're quarantine for another 21 days, it may be hard for them if they have a regular job to go out and volunteer. >> reporter: and tonight because of those new rules, a healthcare worker was put into quarantine at newark international airport. she was treating ebola patients in west africa and since she's been put in

isolation she's developed a fever. reporting live tonight in south philadelphia, todd quinones, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, todd, thank you very much. late today, crews gandhi contaminating the new york apartment of dr. craig spencer. spencer is hospitalized tonight a day after he tested positive for ebola. he returned from guinea, africa, last week after treating ebola patients for doctors without borders. texas nurse nina pham is ebola free tonight. she was discharged today from the national institutes of health hospital in maryland. the 26-year-old contracted the virus while caring for thomas eric duncan, the first person to die from ebola in the u.s. >> i feel fortunate and blessed to be standing here today. i have a special appreciation for the care i've received. >> after being released from the hospital, pham met with president obama. the two shared a hug in the oval office. well, we have set up an ebola resource guide on our web site, cbsphilly.com. it has all the answers to

commonly asked questions and also links to the cdc so that you can read the materials for yourself. >> new tonight a-memorial service is under way near seattle for the victims of a deadly school shooting. it's an outpouring of emotion in marysville where dozens cried and prayed at a local church. earlier today 14-year-old jaylen fryberg opened fire in the cafeteria of marysville high school. students were evacuated from the school. many with their hands up. one student was killed, four others hurt before the gunman took his own life. >> i heard the guns and i turned around and he's just like pulling it and shooting everyone and there's blood everywhere and some got on other girls' faces and stuff. >> we can always say that we watch it on tv but my here it comes walking in our door. >> the school will remain closed all next week as students and the community mourn. developing now in california a suspect is in custody after a shooting rampage that's left two

sheriff's deputies dead near sacramento. a third deputy an bystander were also shot. that suspect is identified as 34-year-old marcelo marquez. the shooting sparked a manhunt involving multiple agencies. police say the violence unfold ed after officers respond to the report of a suspicious person inside a vehicle. now to a exclusive tonight, a warning to homeowners in montgomery county after a string of break-ins. the suspects hit lower gwynedd township targeting homes and stealing whatever they could. now police are wondering if these cases are connected to other in the area. tonight some of the victims talked only to our diana rocco. >> reporter: while they slept, someone was watching. >> robberies while people are home puts an uneasiness with yourself, your wife, your children. it's scary. >> reporter: it has neighbors in lower gwynedd township out to talk about how to protect themselves. burglars hit at least four homes last week stealing a

rolex watch worth more than 20,000 and tens of thousands in diamond jewelry. >> i woke up to my husband calling to me in a way that like i could just tell something was wrong and he said we were robbed. >> reporter: amy found her purse and its contents scattered across their yard. the thieves took two laptops a kindle her husband's phone which he tracked back to philadelphia. >> they got off at the temple university station. >> reporter: these burglars went from home to home during the early morning hours while they were sleeping trying door handles and can cutting screens and when they found an alarm system they would move on. >> we believe the side door was opened and they were able to open it up and walk through the lower level of the house. >> reporter: bob rosenthal says the thieves took his laptop a change jar and his wife's purse. >> very disturb. in fact, today we met with the alarm company. we've lived here for 21 years and never had an alarm. >> i need to take steps now to

make sure this doesn't happen again. >> reporter: similar crimes have been a problem along the septa line in radnor and surrounding towns. police are meeting to discuss if they're related. in lower gwynedd township, diana rocco, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> tonight a chester county priest is under arrest on child pornography charges. mark haines is assigned to saint simon and jude parish in westtown township. prosecutors say that he used instagram to possess and distribute child pornography. haines allegedly posed as a 16-year-old girl on the social media site and exchanged graphic e-mails with a 14-year-old girl. >> you now need to identify the girl and follow up on that investigation. we are looking to see if there are any other victims out there. we would like them to call the chester county detectives and let us know. >> well, the philadelphia archdiocese says it's cooperating with law enforcement and remains committed to preventing abuse and protecting young people entrusted to its care. it's unclear tonight if charges will be filed in

connection with the football hazing allegations at central bucks west high school in doylestown. some new team members were reportedly forced to grab the private parts of other players. so the remainder of the jv and varsity football seasons has been canceled for the rest of the year as a result of those allegations. today we heard from cb west alum mike pettin jr. who is now head coach of the nfl cleveland browns. >> there's obviously noplace for that. like i said, it's -- as an alum i can speak for all of us that it's -- it is an unfortunate thing. >> cb west homecoming festivities which were set for tonight will coincide with the basketball game a little bit later in the year. well, today a federal judge temporarily put a halt to legalized sports betting in new jersey. the judge granted a request made by the nfl, nba, nhl,

major league baseball and the ncaa. those leagues told the court that they would be harmed if the state's casinos and racetracks were to allow sports betting. governor christie signed a law last week that repeals the state's ban on sports wagering. >> new tonight septa's largest union will hold a strike authorization vote on sunday. the transport workers union local 234 represents bus drivers and subway and trolley operators. they have been working without a contract since march. septa tells "eyewitness news" no strike appears imminent. no word on when workers might walk out if members authorize a strike. new tonight the suspect in a violent attack on a group of police officers and why what he did is being called terrorism. kathy. >> in weather we're talking about temperatures surging into the 70's in the seven day and looking ahead to halloween. will it be a trick or a treat? a sneak peek coming up. >> also ahead tonight, inside the cutting edge approach to knee replacements. we'll show you why the new

act of terror. surveillance video shows suspect zale thompson running down the street raising a hatchet before disappearing from the frame. police say thompson struck two officers with the hatchet before he was shot and killed by the police. one of the officers he attacked is in critical condition. police describe to me son as a self-radicalized muslim convert believed to be acting alone. late today officials in virginia confirm remains found recently are those of missing college student hannah graham. she disappeared september 13. the remains were found last week in a rural area a little more than 10 miles from the university of virginia campus. graham was last seen with 32-year-old jessie leroy matthew jr. he's been charged with her abduction. he's also linked by forensic evidence to the 2009 killing of virginia tech student morgan harrington. >> new information tonight about the damage done by a fire at the flight 93 memorial in shanksville, pennsylvania. the national park service says its team of museum experts and

archaeologists determined that fire destroyed hundreds of photos and several other items including a boarding pass, an airport parking pass and passenger id cards. the october 3rd fire broke out at the memorial's administrative buildings. investigators have ruled out foul play but the official cause may never be known. >> on the health watch tonight, what may sound like science fiction is very much a reality and very much a relief for some weekend warriors. tonight our health reporter stephanie stahl shows us how the new option for new knees is all about 3-d. >> we see a lost knee injuries in here. >> reporter: they can only take so much wear and tear. >> they've got arthritis, they've got overuse injuries and the knees start wear out on you. >> reporter: even for some people in their 30's and 40's and many end up with surgery. >> knee replacement is the most common replacement worldwide. >> reporter: knee replacement surgery often provides significant pain relief but about a quarter of

back in 2001 and a conformis in her other knee three months ago. she says there's no comparison. >> time-wise in the hospital was less time. my physical therapy was much easier. i got movement so much faster. if i didn't know -- see the scar on it, i would assume that it's my normal knee. >> reporter: the implants are generally not more expensive and often are covered by insurance. the company says they plan to make other joints like shoulders and hips, too. i'm stephanie stahl, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> well, flew at 11 o'clock tonight eagles running back lesean mccoy cooking up awareness about breast cancer. shady handed out information about early detection from a food truck in upper darby today. he was joined by eagles tight end brent celek and of course they signed lots of autographs for fans. >> also this october landmarks all across the area are displaying pink lights as a reminder for women to schedule

a mammogram. the the symphony house in philadelphia proudly displaying its pink lights as part of lights for the cure. for the 13th year cbs3 and the cw philly teamed up with susan g. komen for the lights for the cure campaign. >> and it was a beautiful night to get out and see some pink lights. >> just perfect out there. >> yeah and the clouds have kept temperatures fairly mild but they are beginning to break and that means a chilly night on tap. we'll start it off cool team morning but rebound really nicely over the course of the weekend and it only gets better. take a look outside where we do have a war in iraq sky in center city philadelphia. this is the view from our center city studios through our skycam3. a spectacular day and with that sunshine we made it there to 70 degrees. more like early fall than mid to late fall. take a look at some other high temperatures around the region. in warrington 72. philadelphia the northeast airport 71. blue bell at wings field airport 70. 70 in reading. we can do it again tomorrow

with a good deal of sunshine. we're also seeing the winds relaxing out of the northwest at about five to 10 miles an hour. really easing up here and between the clearing skies and the lighter winds, that means some cool temperatures. few more clouds moving through philadelphia. you can see the clearing to the west. this is our weather for tomorrow. with the clear skies we're going to be seeing temperatures soaring. right now 59 in philadelphia, 55 in allentown, 55 degrees in reading. look at the poconos, clear and 48. as you go a little bit farther to the west, state college 48, pittsburgh 47. so you can see the weather that is coming our way. during the day on saturday we will watch this warm front lift well to the north. temperatures in the 60's in many locations, i think even in philadelphia making it to 70 degrees but the sun will remain. we'll watch this front that's going to move down from the great lakes saturday night bring a little bit of a can chill sunday morning. it will be breezy. temperatures still in the 60's. knocked down a few degrees. but this wind gusting to about 30, even 35 miles an hour. so, the one thing you're going

to remember saturday a great day to be outside, sunday as well but it's going to be very windy. by monday the winds ease. another warm front is waiting stage left to move in and this is going to bring temperatures back in the 70's by tuesday. we're going jump ahead though because everyone concerned about halloween. we'll watch a front move through with a few showers wednesday. that is going to make it cooler for halloween. halloween is next friday. temperatures will be in the 50's and showers are going to be close, so it's a close call. they will be in the neighborhood, possibly earlier in the day or coming in toward the late evening but right now we're going to keep it dry in that seven-day forecast. so, overnight mainly clear but chilly, the low temperature 45. during the day on saturday, pleasant, temperatures in the up are 60's to around 70 degrees and as we look ahead on the seven-day forecast, check it out. sunday 66 with gusty winds. monday very pleasant. we jump up 10 degrees by tuesday to 75.
