baseball. >> this is the cbs-3 sports zone presented by nissan. >> this one got away. too many mistakes, proved costly, at the birds blow a lead in the dessert. >> another season starts this week, talking 6ers, as the rebuilding process continues. >> welcome to the nissan sports zone, i'm leslie van czars dale. >> i'm beasley reese. >> this one looked week four, lost to san francisco, birds on the road against the nfc west, put themselves into position when the game, they couldn't execute when it mattered, the secondary, well, they needed the phoenix fire department to come over and put them out. >> it started out well enough. the birds were able to get on the bird fist, toss to jeremy
11:37 pm
maclin, will do all the of the rest, 22-yard touchdown pass, eagles take a seven-nothing lead. arizona came back to tie it up, andre ellington here from 1 yard out, forces his way into the end zone, seven-seven ballgame at the heart. >> third quarter now, cardinals palmer sharp toss over to larry fitzgerald, and he's gone, eight time pro-bowler 80 yards, career long arizona will take the lead at 14 to seven. birds made it 14 to ten after code ' parky field goal. to make already, hook it up, tough cabbing. nice deep ball. great throw, eagles retake the lead 17 to 14. thirds and goal, to the birds, can't get it in, from 1 yard out. they were forced to kick the field goal. after another red zone trip stalled out. that made it 20 to 17. two minutes left to play.
11:38 pm
all the eagles had to do was not get knee deep. don't let it anybody get behind you. don't let somebody burn you at a time like this. big defensive mistake, and arizona up 24 to 20. the birds had a final chance at the end. that throw over to injured i matthews, caught the ball, but he was out of bound, throw little too wide. so the eagles lose the game 24 to 20. birds fall to five and two on the season, trail cowboys in the nfc east. here is coordinator bill davis . >> save at the deep enough on the last touchdown? >> never deep enough. they can't get behind the defense, they it, again, all attached, rush is attached to the coverage, underneath coverage, deep coverage, philadelphia eagles defense got beat on that last play. >> that type, just got to make the play, big situation, really got to folk just, just
11:39 pm
make the play, that's the bottom line. yes. >> just got to play deeper, you know, in that situation, he made a play, and thought i would be able to catch him, but i couldn't make that play. he was fast cents enough to get away from us. >> here's nick foles line. through the ball 62 times. completed 36 of those passes cents for 411 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions for nick. shady mccoy ran the ball 21 times for 86 yards. this was the big story, the birds struggled in the red zone. they turned it over twice inside the 20 this afternoon, and they had to settle for the late field goal. the eagles entered the game with the worse red sony fish end is he in the national football league. >> joining us now rob he will frist sister station sports radio 94wip. you just finished up the post game show. hurried over here watch were fans saying? >> oh, they're thrilled, very happy. >> they always are.
11:40 pm
>> euphoria in the sit of brotherly love. no, it was ugly, it was a lot of nick foles probably isn't the answer. this has been happening every week now. what's chip doing out of the shotgun at third and goal, shady mccoy didn't rerun before in san francisco, and, you know, the question continues to linger, how long can you go with natal end? how long can you have three/four of your secondary struggle week in, week out, williams, fletcher, nate allen, and you were brilliant in the highlight call right there. i wish were you there. i wish -- >> well, if they put me in the line up, play it out, everybody, don't get knee deep. somebody should have been screaming don't get beat deep. just can't allow a receiver to get behind him. >> i don't know what nate al send thinking. thirds and five. >> let me, let me jump in here. all right, double team on brown. nate had the inside, carry had the outside. if the guy fakes inside, nate
11:41 pm
is supposed to jump that route. he faked inside, carry should have exploded over the top to be a free safety to protect the entire defense. kerrey williams also slowed down and they both got in the foot race. everybody's got to say this is nate allen, but actually this time it is kerrey. >> the thing is, we've seen this over and over again, from this three some. i mean, if you ex flewed jenkins, excellent all year there is continues to happen. we've seen it far too long. and, you know, you wonder you look at the quarterback position, look at your defensive backfield you say to yourself all right with those two factors, can this team go deep in the playoffs. >> yes, you see a song that highlight did the receiver lean in toward nate, and then nate slowed down, and kerrey was supposed to increase his speed. >> yes. >> ignore the receiver, go deeper than everybody. and last thing you want to hear after the game kerrey williams hey you have to tip your hat to them. no, how about you make a play? that's what you're being paid
11:42 pm
to do. overpaid. >> we got to talk about the red zone offense. huge, huge problem. >> all year, all year, and you hope the bye week would be this magic elixir, everything would change, but eight for 23 this year, 34%, worse in the f. l. you think with all of the weapons you have on this team, with the way ertz has really developed, the size of riley cooper, jeremy maclin, shady mccoy, how is this happening week in, week out. it is a a lot of either they can't execute, or they shoot themselves in the foot like huff today. continues to happen every week. look, turnovers, bad red zone, and issues in your secondary are death. >> death. you can't let guys get behind you. then you can't lose those two red zone opportunities. they just have to stop this. it felt like the san francisco game, got down to the 1 yard line, and could not score. you see that similarity, of course. >> with the huff play we're seeing, you hate it, you get it, rookie, trying to make a plaques but the false play, we
11:43 pm
again see him throw off his back foot, and under throw his receiver, that has been happening all year long with him. and you can't figure out, you know, why didn't we see this last year when he had less experience, yet we're seeing it over and over again this year. >> back foot -- >> throw it out of bound, you have kick here can kick from log distance, if you're sacked, you're sacked, it is okay, or throw it away, the worse thing that can happen. >> going to be his game, you know, his hometown, and just a very, very -- >> lost -- probably makes his best throw of his career, as good as you can throw, but then there is the riley cooper, you can't throw it more behind a receiver than did he. >> no. he's not comfortable. i'm telling you last year the entire offensive line was healthy all year, he was comfortable, this year, been in and out. just a shame. aside from that, let's break down the defense. how do you feel like the defense, just overall? >> they didn't get any sacks
11:44 pm
today, i thought they did nice job of getting palmer uncomfortable. they got some pressure on him, which i think, he had two huge plays, two breakdowns, you could argue the fitzgerald play was a pick, that's inexcusable, we talked about the brown play, but i thought for the most part the front seven which they had been all year was pretty good, your secondary. this, every week. >> go back to nick foles. i feel like last year he was much more maybe careful. >> yes. >> in, you know, how he played, and i feel like's little more wreckless this year. but i don't know why. >> i think he is pressing. i think maybe, you know, he feels like i'm not doing what i did last year. >> right. >> i got to try to make the big play. you see it. look at the last play. he's in back up mode, back up mode, back up mode, then throws it, look at the intersection, most of the time when he gets in trouble, he is floating, which is a recipe for disaster, because he is slow, guys will get him from behind, or it is a back foot
11:45 pm
throw, which turns into interception. beasley, you're right, it is cents in his head. you can tell he has happy feet, he is not better in the pocket last year, woe step up, he would buy some time. you don't have to be a fast, you know, mobile quarterback to be good in the pocket of you have to have pocket mobility. his pocket mobile at this is terrible this year. >> really is. >> and let's real quick talk about this red zone series at the end the of the game. see right here. >> yes, this is good. i mean, actually, they get away from the run too much in the first half and the third quarter, get back to it in the fourth. >> this was good. and by the way that should have been looked at again. that play. because i don't think he was down. it doesn't get reviewed. i just hate the fact you run this out of the shotgun. i would rather have foles under center. shady said it himself, god felt so much better against the giants because we were running the ball when nick was under center i have better vision and better speed coming from the backfield. and they go back to that, you know, and chip asked about it
11:46 pm
after the game, references the dallas game last year, what's that have to do with anything? i look at the san francisco game, that didn't work. so this didn't work either. i have no problem with him kicking it after they didn't get it there. i thought it was smart play. but i hated the thirds down call. >> yes. overall it is difficult, you know, because chip had him with huff at the end. >> yes. >> he had him in the red zone with nick. so i don't know where we go with the coach. i agree with you, i mean, but see you saw two of the running plays where pretty dynamic, pretty strong, look like they blitz the right hole at the right time on the thirds running play. >> yes. >> so i don't know you what going to do if you don't have a quarterback who can also be a running threat, why would you? >> here's what's strange. i think fourth down, third or fourth down, nick actually keeps it, gets it, and he's too long do it there. he is six-six. you're on the inlne. if he just falls over and crosses the plane, you're in. so, i mean, look, i'm not going to put this all on chip certainly. but i didn't like that
11:47 pm
11:50 pm
ronald ron. roberts, jr. >> they begin regular season play, on wednesday, after indianna. that's followed up with friday trip to milwaukee. home open is her saturday against the miami heat. sixers finish lasts season, with 19 wins, and 63 losses. >> and joining us news, sixers beat writer for the philadelphia inquirer, regular season starts this week, you have watched the team the entire pre-season. what can we expect? tell us something good, keith. >> i think you can expect an athletic team, noel will play this year, they have second rounds pick in kj motorcycle done yells, a lot of people thought was going to go in the first round. but i think you also have to be extremely patient. i mean, this is -- they've been preaching it. >> preaching. i mean, it is cents serious, this is a young team they're
11:51 pm
going to lose a lot of games, the team isn't going to be as good as last year's game, but part of the process? everybody that watches this team every day, and covers this team from the coach right down to you, it is just depressing. just depressing. >> although we do love the coach. >> when you have a plan, it is like saving money it, hurts, you know, you got to be very vigilant, sacrifice. >> we know there is a plan. we got that. >> when is it going to pay off? how many years from now would it pay off, our savings plan? >> i mean, i would say no sooner than four years. >> oh, lord. >> i mean -- >> oh, no. >> here's the reason. because if you think about it right now, so last year it was the michael carter williams show. now there is year they'll play noel, right? then next year they bring in joel. then next year the guy darius, he'll come n the reason why i am saying it is going to take
11:52 pm
that long, we have to realize right now, all these guys are being hyped up, but they're coming in as rookies. so they're going to go through the rookie growth. you know, and that's a lot of times you struggle, especially for big players, like joe he will, the center. you know, no longer -- our ' not in kansas any more, son, you're playing against grown men. so it will take a while for that to happen. >> okay. mike cartagena err williams' shoulder, how is that doing? >> it is doing better, he is cleared to practice on november the six. the target date for him to play is november the 13th. that's going to start a west coast trip. they're going to be in dallas playing the mavericks. >> okay. >> noel so far in the pre season? >> his first game he struggled a lot. then the second game he stemmed up. now, the thing that we have to realize is noel different type of big, like a loft people see him, they see he is six-one;
11:53 pm
but i always say he is unfortunate because he is tall. for real. like in noel was six-seven, we would say he is a great wing, he is athletic, he slashes to the basket death, he dunks all the time. but the from the that he is six-11, and he is so thin, you know, he's not on the block type of guy. so he gets out in space. and since he's, you know, so slender, some people may say look at this guy. but he's extremely -- like i will say this for him, noel is the type of guy who gets highlight the. he will be on sports enter for his dunks. he will have eight points, eight rebounds, and several blocks. >> somehow his hand until. >> his handle is good for somebody so big. board of his brothers are six-four, then he is six-11, you know, his hands some good. just that he's just a big, he is tall, he was the guy going the corner and you dunk. you know?
11:54 pm
>> so who is to you, some people say he's going to be, you know, the guy, 15 years -- >> people are hoping. >> test kind of hard, kind of hard for me to say right now, because i have to see him play, you know, and, you know, i saw him play at kansas. and when you look at him, because of course he is not out there. 's big guy. i mean, he is huge. and the thing about it, he will be the fate of the franchise when he comes. i mean, they're going to go inside out so to speak. they're going to start with him, but for me to like say how good he is going to be right now is hard because i haven't seen him play against actual nba competition. >> so what does brett down doses? how does he approach the season right now? >> he has cents to approach it like, i mean, i know it sounds crazy, but he has cents to approach it as if he is coaching a contender. you know, because he has cents to keep the guys motivated. he has to stay hard on them. if not, then they're going to pick up a lot of bad lab glitz
11:55 pm
absolutely. >> you know? >> absolutely, great answer. >> what, i'm just trying to figure, you know, he sounds depressing, asking everybody to wait, just like you sound depressing asking me to wait four years. >> but he's realistic. >> you can look forward to -- >> you know, before ex fixate myself with my tie. >> you have to see the growth. you have to see noel, see how he grows before our eyes, look forward to see what mike at carter williams can do in the second year, then there is a who i really like, kg mcdaniels. >> i he was great. >> the funny thing innings i hate to say it, bye doesn't know what he is doing. he is just out there. not to knock him. 's rookie. like he is out of position. but at the same time he is always coming up with nice stills, and nice blocks. so once he gets everything together, he should and pretty good player.
11:56 pm
>> and he's doing more than people thought woe do? >> yes, he is, he is. >> all right, how many wins, judge i go go ahead and kill me. because he's killed me. >> i love it. >> i'm being positive. are you hearing these guys? okay, how many wins. >> before the pre-season i said 15. i think they'll win about 12. >> now you're down to 12? >> i'm down to 12. >> i would like to just jump off this billing. >> thanks, keith. >> we think? >> you can follow keaton twitter his handle at pompeii on sixers. and coming up next in the nissan sports zone, the flyers return home, in a debut of one of their much talked about youngsters. plus, brutal ending in happy valley. we have highlights from this college football weekend on the way.
