an unmanned rocket goes down in flames moments after launch, sending millions of dollars worth of supplies for the international space station up in smoke. following the attack in ottawa and threats from abroad, the department of homeland security steps up safety measures at federal buildings across the country. pope francis makes some surprising statements about science, evolution, and the origin of life. he is safe! that's 9-0. >> and the royals rebound to win big in game six of the world series, setting up a decisive game seven tonight. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning

news" for wednesday, october 29th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. there has been a major setback in this country's commercial space flight effort. an unmanned supply rocket headed to the international space station skbloeded just after lift-off. the an ttares rocket exploded jt after it took off. cbs's bill harwood watched in shock as the rocket came crashing back to its launchpad on the coast of v. >> oh, my goodness. oh, my goodness. it looks like the rocket has suffered a catastrophic launch moments after its launch. it's fallen back on its launch pad. >> no one was injured. investigators hope to begin picking through the wreckage this morning.

susan mcginnis is on wallops island. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. officials say they saw no hint of trouble until the actual explosion above the flight complex last night. the investigation is already well under way into what went wrong. >> and we have lift-off. >> reporter: seconds after blasting off from the launchpad on the island in virginia, the unmanned rocket bound for the international space station burst into flames. the flight was over in just 15 seconds. a spectacular fireball and exploding debris rained down on the launchpad. no one was kill or injured in the catastrophic launch but more than 5,000 pounds of cargo and supplies headed to the international space station are gone. >> we do want to express our dis appointment that we were not able to fill our obligation to the international space station program and deliver this load of car doe. >> investigators will begin

combing through the debris at dawn. residents on the island here of virginia's coast are told to contact nasa if they come across any debris from the blast and they warn it may be hazardous. >> something went wrong during the first stage powered flight whether that was the engines built in russia or some other support system is not yet known. >> nasa has used other companies to supply the stace space station since it retired its fleet in 2011. the mission says iss has adequate supplies to last until at least next spring. now, coincidentally, the russian space agency already had a flight, a rocket flight headed for tomorrow for the international space station to bring supplies to the astronauts that are stationed there. meanwhile the company, orbital science says it will be back here investigating the scene here and they say they will figure out what happened, they

will correct it, and they will fly into space again. anne-marie? >> all right. susan mcginnis on wallops island, virginia. thank you, susan. on hawaii now a slow moving disaster impossible to stop. this morning a river of 2000 degree-lava is on the verge of consuming homes in the pa jova village. mileka lincoln of our honolulu station has our report. it didn't have a chance. it became the first structure destroyed by the relentless movement of lava flowing from the volcano. this woman is among the hundreds of residents ordered to evacuate. >> it's real. it's now or never. >> reporter: the eruption that threatens to destroy the village began on the 27th. sometimes pausing for days.

o'times flowing close to 300 yards in just 24 hours. >> it's a special type of lava, and it's flowing a long distance from where it started. you look at hawaii. it's a volcano. what we're seeing now is what hawaii's made of. >> from the air the lava appeared to have hardened into blackrock but photos taken by the u.s. geological survey revealed a river of super heated lava continues to blow beneath the solid shell. >> so even if you were able to figure out how to divert the material, it would create a new pathway. there should. be any casualties. it's beautiful to watch. now, hundreds of people in southeast ohio are under evacuation order this morning following an accident at an industrial site. the head of a national gas well

was shirred off at a facility in jefferson county. a crew from texas is on the way to cap off the well. and the white house says it's dealing with a cyber attack. a new security measure -- the new security measures have led to some outages and loss of availability for some white house employees. the white house is not commenting on a "washington post" report that the russians are behind the security breach. and this morning there is increased security at u.s. government buildings. the ramped up security measures come following recent attacks in canada and continuing threats against this country. the chief of homeland security says the reasons for the actions are self-evident. wendy gillette is here in new york with the details. wendy, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the homeland security department says the increased security at some federal government buildings at washington and other major american cities is

only a precautionary step. the announcement came from homeland security secretary jeh johnson. johnson declined to reveal which buildings fall under this tightened security. he also won't say exactly what measures are being taken. but he says they'll vary depending on the location. the announcement comes as the west faces the possibility of terrorist plots launched by terrorists isis. it follows last week's attack in ottawa when a gunman fatally shot a gunman at the war memorial and stormed parliament. johnson says officials across the country should be on the lootout for an attack like the one in canada. this morning about 150 kurdish troops are headed to the syrian border town of kobani. they arrived in turkey overnight. they'll join the battling kurds trying to control them. they have launched dozens of air

strikes against the militants. and former florida governor jeb bush a potential presidential candidate is criticizing president obama's initial handling of the ebola crisis as incompetent. he said he gave rise to unneeded fears to the american public about the virus. this afternoon the president will talk about the fight against ebola in a white house speech. meanwhile the second of two nurses infected with the virus is home. craig boswell is home. >> reporter: dallas nurse amber vinson returned home tuesday after undergoing successive treatment in atlanta. she spoke with reporters. >> while this is a day of celebration and gratitude i ask that we not lose focus on the thousands of families who continue to labor under the burden of this disease in west africa. >> reporter: vinson is one of two nurses to contract the virus after treating thomas air duncan who died of the disease.

the other nina pham was treated at the national institutes of health and released last week. the president says the mandatory quarantine some states are enforcing on health workers could have a chilling effect. >> we don't want to discourage our health care workers from going to the front lines and dealing with this in an effective way. >> reporter: nurse casey hicks ox is under quarantine at her home in maine after being held three days at a hospital in new jersey. her lawyer is challenges mandatory quarantine. however, u.s. army soldiers who built treatment centers in liberia will remain isolated in italy until the 21-day incubation period is up. the president says that's because the soldiers have to follow orders. craig boswell, cbs news, the white house. the former major league slugger jose canseco is recovering after shooting

two years ago today superstorm sandy came ashore. it's blamed for at least 182 deaths and caused $65 billion worth of damage in several states. the effects of sandy are still being felt to this day. in new york alone health officials estimate about 700,000 residents are still experiencing mental health problems related to the storm. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, at&t's accused of deceiving smartphone users, and robots attack customer service at lowe's. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. this morning at&t is being charged. the lawsuit alleges that at&t didn't adequately disclose to more than 3 million customers that their data speeds would be reduced if they went over a certain amount in the billing cycle. >> what you thought was going to

be great 4g connection all of a sudden becomes incredibly slow and not useful. they call it baselet. the lawsuit wants money returned to them. they're waiting for an announcement on bond buying. the dow gained 187 points on tuesday. the s&p was up 23. the nasdaq rose 78 points. well, total spacebook advertising revenue jumped 64% in the third quarter. most of that was an increase in mobile ads where most users are. facebook announced earnings of $3.2 billion but in after-hours trading shares dropping more than 8%. it came after mark zuckerberg talked about spending billions of dollars in the future. and lowe's stores are trefting robots to test out customer service. they're being tried out in

go. i'm excited. >> history is on the side of the royals tonight. the home team has won nine straight world series game sevens. in hockey, great gordie howe is recovering this morning from a stroke. howe's family says he's lost much of theous of his right hand and leg after suffering the stroke sunday. the 86-year-old hall of famer played pro hockey into his 50s and retired as the nhl's all-time leading scorer. well, more than four decades of southern rock and roll came to a close in new york city. the allman brothers band performed for the final time at the beacon theeter. they overcame the death of two founding members to play thousands of shows for over 45 years. this is the "cbs morning news."

a missing denver broncos fan has been found and he's safe. police say paul kitterman was found in pueblo, colorado, more than 100 miles south of denver. he mysteriously disappeared. there's no reason to think a crime was involved. so which partd takes control of the senate in next week's midterm elections could come down to the race in kansas. that's where incumbent republican pat roberts is trying to hang onto his seat in a tight race with independent challenger greg orman. marlie hall reports. >> reporter: senator pat roberts is in the political life of his life. he needs it to hang onto the

senate. >> reporter: with the stakes so high big parties names like congressman paul ryan and sarah palin are lending support on the campaign trail. he's lost in a tight race with greg orman. he previously challenged robert as a democrat. >> he's not an independent. he will be a stamp of approval for harry reid and a continuation on the vote for the agenda. >> reporter: they have been sending republicans to the senate since 1932 but dissatisfaction in washington has been at an all-time high. >> there's too much partisanship. >> reporter: he's voting for orman saying roberts has gone too far to the right. >> he no longer represents mainstream kansans and it's time for a change.
