the suspect and smashing out the windows. as these details are released we are still moving forward. >> we got it. >> we got her. we got the guy in custody. she ace live. >> reporter: police commissioner charles ramsey recalled in a one on one interview the moment that he learned that kidnaped victim carlesha gaither was safe, and her accused attacker delven barn hose dragged her for a city block throwing her in the car unday evening, arrested wednesday afternoon inside a vehicle where he was holding carlesha in jessup, maryland. >> we know one thing had we not rescued her the outcome may have been quite different. >> been on the force for 22 years. this is one of the most -- one of the more memorable cases. it just feels good to help out and have a good ending. >> reporter: carlesha was first seen on video fighting her allege attacker and police

revealed to cbs-3 just how fearsly she battled. police now saying victim found a hammer in the car beating the suspect and breaking out car windows. police say that she was then tied with plastic zip ties to keep her from escaping and perhaps more chilling in an alleged confession barnes stating that he didn't even know carlesha, she was chosen at random, in addition, barnes allegedly told a virginia teenager who is accused of attempting to murder er that he a had killed, others. >> he made mention to the victim there, that he had done this before

>> he was under active probation supervision in virginia, yet, while supposedly being supervised, he allegedly, committed this kidnapping, as well, and as the attempted murder of the teenager in that state. there has been no explanation so far from officials. live at police headquarters i'm walt hunter, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> walt, thank you so much. >> delven barnes was denied bail in maryland. he waved extradition to charles city county virginia where he faces an attempted murder charge. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco is live in baltimore with breaking details there about how, breaking news about how officials arrested delven barnes, diana. >> it turns out federal authorities are looking into that brutal attack on the virginia teenager, when they got a gps hit on delven barnes car, here in maryland. it wasn't long before they made the connection to carlesha. delven barnes was taken down

by federal atf agents wednesday acting on a tip, they got a gps hit on the ford taurus he was driving in the shopping center in jessup maryland. >> we noticed he was moving in the car that indicated he would possibly be pulling out. there will be a plastic bag being placed over a rear passenger side window which fit description from the vehicle from the philadelphia abduction. >> reporter: federal agents from the baltimore office saw a man and woman in the back seat and block the car in guns drawn. >> as we approached the car, he was totally shocked, surprised to see these atf agents coming at him. >> with barns on the ground, agents found 22-year old carlesha free land gaither in the back seat, too distraught to say her name after three days of captivity. >> as we check on her in the back seat, she was visibly shaken. she was very upset. >> reporter: barnes went before a federal judge in the maryland courtroom on thursday on video conference from the baltimore detention center. the the 37 year-old is being extradited to virginia for the rape and kidnapping of a 16

year-old last month. then back to pennsylvania, for carlesha's abduction, agents say was a string of tips that led them to this dangerous criminal and rescue of carlesha. >> truly to save her was incredible. it is a -- we talk bit afterward, best moment in all of our professional lives. >> reporter: in an expressionless barnes barely spoke at his court hearing this afternoon where he was held, without bail, state police have five days to extradite him, to virginia. we're live from baltimore maryland tonight i'm diana rocco for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". thank you very much. let's dig deeper in the background of the suspect delven barnes. he has a long criminal history. our investigative reporter charlotte huffman talk to someone that knows him, his uncle, she's live in the sat center with the interview you've got to see to it believe it, charlotte. >> reporter: are i talk to barnes uncle and another family member who scared for her safety asked that i in the

use her name, but told me quote, delven is a monster and i have always been afraid of him. >> i'm not going to say like everybody else he is a good person because he is my nephew. he is not a good person. >> reporter: lemar barn was not surprised that his nephew ace accused of kidnapping. the 37 year-old born in philadelphia but grew up in virginia has a lengthy criminal record. in 2005 he was arrested in philadelphia for aggravated assault, criminal trespass, false imprisonment, burglary and reckless endangerment. lemar says the assault victim was barnes ex-wife. >> he has always had problem with girlfriend and ex-wife's and things like that. >> reporter: when barnes was released less than a year ago he helpedded back to richmond virginia where his parent still live. that is where police say last month barnes abduct and raped a 16 year-old. the teen was found bleeding, burned and smelling with gasoline and remains hospitalized. >> we are in a small community and something of this caliber almost never happens here. it is a shock to the community

and i'm sure a shock to me but i'm sure the community is glad that this guy is off the street. >> reporter: wanted for capitol murder barnes fled to philly. >> his sister called me a week or so ago and told me something that he had did in virginia. so i assume he would come here because he has a lot of connections here. >> reporter: lemar says he knew it was only a matter of time before barnes would strike again. >> all i know is my brother called my mother and said that delven had done something else. i saw videos, going in the store or something, i knew then that was him. >> reporter: police say a family member tipped them off as to barnes vehicle. lemar says he doesn't know anything about that. for the iteam i'm charlotte huffman for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". thanks very much. freeland gaither's family experiencing so many emotions as they deal with the highs and lows of the last few days. our team coverage continues with cleve bryan who is live outside of the home of freeland gaither's mother,

cleve. >> reporter: well, family spokesperson for carlesha's family said at some point loved ones may be willing to talk with us this afternoon but understandably they say that they need more time as they rest, from everyone that has come to visit here today that came out and with speak they say the family is very tired but relieved. >> we embraced her. we hugged. i'm just happy that it is done. >> reporter: terrifying, exhaust continuing ordeal ended in the best possible way with carlesha gaither safe and sound and her abductor behind bars. >> we are relieved to know that she's safe, that she's in good health and that god was on our side, everybody was praying for us and prayer works. >> reporter: she says that her cousin carlesha is tired but wants to express gratitude. >> she's good. she want to thank all y'all for your help, everybody, she just kept saying thank you. happy to be back home and

delven barnes confessed to abducting carlene a carlesha barnes in germantown. free land gaither is now at a undisclosed location after reuniting with her family. she was found last night, with barn necessary a car in a parking lot, in jessup, maryland. now law enforcement officials got their big break

in this case when they saw the used car dealers name on a traffic camera in the barnes car and asked that dealership to turn that tracker device on. >> three on your side jim donovan tell us these devices are not uncommon. >> reporter: that is right, indeed. they are often much more than a traditional gps system that most people use. estimated 2 million vehicles nationwide are equipped with what are known as starter interrupt devices. made by various manufacturers, the devices can track the location and movements of a vehicle and cannery metally disable ignition using computer or mobile phone. they are used as a way to prevent people with bad credit from buying a car and skipping out on the payments. think of it as a virtual repo man. >> this is a way for used car dealers who have high risk customers for them to keep track of the vehicle and access it remotely if they need to if someone is not paying their bills as a way to track it rather than track down a man every time they have to get a hold of a car. >> reporter: now about one
