4:30 am
. >> this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". and today is friday, november 14th, good morning, i'm ukee washington. >> i'm erika von tiehl. these are stories we're following today, little taste of winter for folks across the region, of course courtesy of the polar vortex. what's the weekends have in store in katie has the answer. >> a jewelry heist in philadelphia, four thieves caught on camera just before making off with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. we'll have the latest on the search for the suspects. >> and manna cured of kidnapping a philadelphia woman and trying to escape through maryland is set to face a judge once again. right now, though, we want to get back to the snow and the chilly temps. >> yes indeed, look at it. that was something else. here's katie. what's it looking like, katy? >> thankfully i can report we are watching this system make its full retreat.
4:31 am
we start things off with a look at "skycam 3". you can still tell there are a few left over raindrops out here on the actual camera lens, so it sort of makes for bit of out of focus view of the ben franklin bridge. but anything that is still out there is very, very wimpy in term of any additional precipitation that would be falling here in our area. let's go ahead, take a look how did you last night with snow and the, where it got colds enough that snow had a chance to actually drop down and accumulate. so huff church, and northern new jersey, but outside of our viewing area, but really was locally one of the highest totals we had. new tripoli pick up almost one and a half inches, and couple couple cents of an inch around the rest of the region. here's what's left at this point. it is cold enough that there may be any damp, left over roads that got moisture left on them, they could freeze over perhaps, so you want to watch for maybe some slick spots, also a lot of leaves
4:32 am
that have fallen on the roadway, too, but you can see how this is really making its full retreat at this point. so no additional precipitation in the forecast for us as of today, we will clear out very quickly for sunshine, and this actually ends up being beautiful looking day. the problem is in the wake of this system, you get not just the chill in the air, but also going to be dealing with a chilly wind out of the northwest. so we look at the future feels like, starting off at 7:00 a.m., still will feel like the 20's or the teens in a lot of spots, but notice, even by noon, even by 4:00 p.m., it may not feel any better than the 30's. so particular anily we will hit the mid 40's, that's cold enough for the standards this time of year. again, factor in the winds, of course that's a whole new ballgame. that's what you want to be dress being for, chilly northwesterly wintery winds out there, currently the temperatures 37 at the airport, any precipitation has since long since retreated through the poconos, but coal enough if it were still snowing it, would be just that, snow, meanwhile, we go forward in the forecast, and
4:33 am
again, do you have watch for the winds. it is bright, sunny, have the sunglasses ready, too, but the extra layers, winter coat, all necessary on a day like this. vittoria, good morning. >> good morning, katie, everyone, and katie is absolutely right about the extra layers. you will need to prepare a little bit more this morning, because even as i went outside, there was little snow on my windshield. so, make sure that you check your fluids, check your windshield wipers, check your headlights, because, and also, you want to make sure if you are checking those things before you head out on the roadways, once you get there, slick spots. take it easy, make sure you're monitoring even your speeds. as far as speeds are concerned, people are driving along just fine, really on all of the majors, speed censors are up into the 50's, this is 476, right around the area of the mid-county toll plaza, no delays here, real now delays anywhere. we do have a note for you traveling the platt bridge. we do have the closure of the each side of the platt bridge today because of construction. so, as we head on now to the
4:34 am
maps, we're taking a a look close, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., due to overhead repairs, eastbound platt bridge closed 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. today. your best alternate is to just stick with 995 and head over the girard point bridge. ukee? >> vittoria, thank you, waking to up cold temperatures and maybe few slick spots out there as vittoria and katie mentioned following the first snowflakes of the season. >> not sure a loft russ quite ready for that. but there is one positive, it is great for ice skating, right? "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo joins us from the brand new ice ring at dilworth plaza in center city, jan, good morning. >> erika, ukee, good morning, certainly feels more like went they are morning, especially when you compare it to what we were feeling like earlier this week. but what better way to celebrate the cold weather than with a lap around the ice ring. coming to you live from rothman ice ring at dilworth park of course, the new ice ring here in center city. and really we will get everyone started off on the

4:36 am

4:43 am
still some signs of life on radar, but really starting to dry out at this point. you know, you will have i think some damp leaves on the roads. >> for sure, they can be slippery. >> could be little slick, yes, left over moisture on the roads, has the potential now that the temperatures are dropping down to the lowest, maybe ice over little bit. won't be major ice event, but enough that we can't to gave you a heads up. so be extra careful, just because the system is leaving of course doesn't mean the aftermath issues aren't there necessarily, and that circumstances the aftermath of this system i think maybe come the most notice within it comes to the wind, because that's really going to knock your feels-like temperatures back. so we look at storm scan3, and they are, again, still some activity to report out here. but there really is a back edge to this, pretty much out of here at this point. so we can basically say that we're done with this system. and, as we clear out, we will end one bright sunshine, but the breeze between systems what's going to get us here. and then we end one quiet weather looks like for the better part of the weekends. so we walk you through this pattern, low pressure yields
4:44 am
for high pressure, remember what happens between areas of pressure. you end one that pressure gradient, that can really get that wind cranking and depending which direction it is coming from it could be a warm winds or a cold wind. and because it is a northwest winds, well, you guessed it, it will be a cold wind. soap with the blustery conditions, highs already well below the average by about 10 degrees. and then it may not feel any better than the 30's when you factor in that wind. by tomorrow high pressure settling a little bit more. so the bright sunshine returns, but still cold, at only mid 40's, by sunday more clouds than anything, as a new system begins to develop off to our west, and that will be monday's stormy. so, currently, the winds are not terrible, but again, it is enough because of this cold air mass, to make it feel awfully chilly outside. current temperatures, into the mid 30's, i wouldn't bensalem, cinnaminson, girard college, probably feels no better than the 20's most spots when you factor in the breeze. forty-five is our expected hi, however. we will drop it down later tonight under nice crystal
4:45 am
clear sky to 29 in the city. so, even through the outlying suburbs you might be flirting with 20 degrees, as the night progresses. it will be a coal one, so running that heat on, be safe about it. 44 degrees for tomrrow's high, and again, bright sunshine, more clouds on sunday, and then monday you need the rain gear. looks like next storm primarily steady rainmaker, hint that there may be some mixing on the back edge of this. look at the drop on the thermometer by tuesday after all 39 at best, but at lies the sun already making a return appearance. ukee, back over to you. >> thank if you, katie n sport, the sixers play the rocket tonight in houston it, could be a good thing to get right back at it, and forget that embarrassing lost in dallas last night. noel and carter playing together for the first time. good to see mcw playing first game. season, drivers, slams t first time he touched the ball. nicely done. good to see. but all dallas after that. sixers were down 44-point at half time.

4:53 am
right now 4:53. here's traffic and weather together. good morning, vittoria. >> good morning. you know, traffic wise, not dealing with any volume or rush hour. still so early for. that will not even at 5:00 a.m. but do you still have slick spots on the road. as we take a look at 95, these headlights just grazing the road ever so slightly, you will notice that it definitely
4:54 am
will be still have that sheen to it from overnight weather. so, just give yourselves more time out there. practice extra caution. speaking of, let's talk about the platt bridge for a second. because if you plan to head eastbound on the platt today, we've got closure will set you back from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the eastbound side of the platt, will be closed for making some overhead repairs. so, definitely using the girard point bridge, which otherwise is just 95, is your best alternate throughout that time period in the afternoon. as we take a look at the speed censors, speed censors are great, high up to the 50's, no rush hour just yet. how much, because of the weather, septa's regional rail lines are experiencing system-wide delays at 30th street station due to slippery rales. so plan accordingly for. that will also the river line, having some communication problems yesterday. so today, they are on a saturday schedule, as a result of those communication problems. so, weather really setting us back already this morning, kate. >> i a lot of times these storms roll on out of here. you think okay, we're done with it, no problem, let's get out the door. but a lot of times the
4:55 am
aftermath problems that come along with it, in the way whatever vittoria was talking about with the traffic concerns, also fine in just the actual atmosphere, whether it comes to the cold and the breeze that's kicking in, in the wake of. >> this so, that's going to have impact on you, too. here is storm scan3, and what's left now of the system. right on schedule, it is moving out quickly here, so granted we do still have some clouds. see that there is a back edge to it, back through harrisburg, skies had a chance to clear out, keep in mind, though, that we are off to very chilly start. it is currently 37 in philly. let's just keep it in perspective it, could be so much worse. these are current temperatures across some of the neighboring cities here through the us. it is currently in rapid city below zero by 9 degrees. the actual air temperature. so yes, it feels pretty cold here, actually feels even colder factoring in the wind. your actual current feels like values into the 20's in most spots. so, keep that in mind when you walk out the door. but again, it could be a lot worse, that said, expect more
