in two stories developing right now. a suspect is dead after being shot by a delaware state trooper in the middle of a reasonable neighborhood. >> and a family and friends come together as man is is arrested for murdering a woman and her young son then trying to cover up the crime with a fire. good evening, i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. >> new tonight, police say the boyfriend did it and egg harbor city man is now charged with murder and arson following a suspicion house fire that shook a quiet neighborhood. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco was the only reporter there as a grieving community came together tonight. >> reporter: joseph palmer is now being held here at the atlantic county justice facility charged with murdering a mom and her young son. on the same night a community is remembering their lives gavin packs is the father struggle for words after he talks about his little boy.

with hugs and tears the community mourns the death of seven year old gavin and his mom michelle. they were murdered at the hands of michelle's boyfriend. >> we wanted everybody come out today to celebrate life because if anybody new shell, she will loved life. >> hundreds lit candles to remember the young mother and her son found burned inside their washington street home wednesday after firefighters put out the flames. 38 year old joseph palmer lived with them and was found injured outside. originally telling investigators there was an intruder but police now say palmer stabbed michelle and gavin to death then set the fire. >> i can't believe this could happen in our little town and to people who were so kind and loving. >> reporter: many at the vigil left notes to michelle and gavin a second grader at spraying elementary. family members wearing red because it was gavin's favorite color. >> i can remember gavin when he was about two years old.

he would sit in the church pew, and when the choir would start to sing, he would take out a hymn until and try singing with us. >> reporter: that's so precious. >> he was. he was a precious, precious little boy. >> reporter: palmer was arrested upon leaving the hospital friday afternoon. he's being held on $2 million bail. i'm diana rocco cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> also breaking at this hour, earthquake strikes off the coast of the indonesia and officials are warning of a possible to you name. the us geological service calls this a 7.3 magnitude earthquake. there are no immediate reports right now of injuries or damage but we do know the quake has the potential to create to you name waves along the coasts of indonesia and the philippines. here at home our temperatures are plunge to go night, and that means we'll deal with a very cold morning. meteorologist kathy orr is live outside bundled up on the cbs-3 sky deck with the cold weather that's already settled in. kathy. already a little breezy out here, chris that.

combined with a very cold temperatures are driving wind chills way down across the delaware valley and colder air is coming believe it or not. take look across the delaware valley at our item temperatures. 37 in philadelphia. freezing in wilmington and trenton. freezing in allentown. only 30 in atlantic city at the airport and the poconos it is 28 degrees. with winds out of the northwest at about five to 10 miles an hour, wind chills are driven down into the 20s. it feels like 27 in reading and allentown. trenton. it feels like 24 in millville. feels like 17 in the poconos. coming up we're talking about the coldest morning since last march. in the morning only 29 degrees in philadelphia. colder in our suburbs. here's some of the other numbers you'll wake up to. allentown 26. the poconos 23. only 28 degrees in millville and atlantic city. but with the wind it will feel even colder. now we are looking at another arctic blast moving our way for next week. we'll talk more about that and how colder it is going to get. for now we'll zen it back to you

in the studio. >> breaking details tonight. a delaware state trooper opens fire on a suspect after a car chase and that suspect died a short time ago. this shooting happened at harvey road and garfield avenue in claymont. "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones is live there tonight. todd? >> reporter: jessica, there were multiple gunshots fired here in this reasonable neighborhood, ton night we've learned the man who was killed has been identified as 41 year old william mcnulty of clayton. video taken just minutes after the shooting shows the back windshield of the car was shot out. police were reportedly chasing this car in claymont early friday evening. the car crashed here on harvey road, a delaware state trooper shot william mcnulty. investigators have been combing over the scene on harvey road near garfield avenue. mcnulty was rushed to christiana hospital. the shooting happened here just after 4:00 friday evening. friday night over the phone we talked to mcnulty's uncle. says the 41 year old battled

drug use and had prior run ins with the law. >> he's never owned a weapon before that i ever new of or anyone in the familiar woman know of. it's just so -- so unlike him for this to happen like this. and it's kind of hard for to us grasp. we're going to take it and deal with it the best we can right now. >> reporter: christiana -- this evening mcnulty was pronounced dead at christiana h at this point it's not clear if he was armed as investigators have released no mr. details. reporting live tonight in claymont, delaware, todd quinones cbs-3 "eyewitness new news". >> todd thank you. tonight inside the real live local murder case that captured headlines. the killing of the olympic wrestler dave schultz by the eccentric millionaire john dupont came to the big screen. fox catcher is out in limited release tonight. before you see it find out what really hammed. we now go deep inside this case as our natasha brown talks exclusively with key players who

were in the middle of it all. >> reporter: in january 1996 john dupont an hair to the dupont company chemical fortune drove to the guest house on his sprawling estate known as fox catcher farm in newton square and shot and killed 36 year old david schultz. schultz an olympic res leng gold med list lived there with his family and had trained like hundreds of other athletes at the estate run by dupont. it's a moment that brought richard show berg a swimming coach to his niece. >> he said, dick, john dupont shot and killed dave schultz and i fell to the ground. >> reporter: stunned to collapse richard spent 10 years coaching at the world class athletic facility built by dupont. a team fox catcher banner still hangs on the wall at germantown academy where he's coached swimming for four decades. >> i loved the guy because he helped so many kids. i loved dave schultz. on that day i lost two really droves close friends. >> reporter: the world would come to know a very different john dupont in the days

following the murder. and increasingly eccentric man who held police at bay during a two-day tense standoff at fox catcher farms. >> squat team members about 40 marksman are still surrounding the mansion about a mile down this twist tee lovely road. >> reporter: joe and dennis mc andrews were prosecutors on the case. >> we have an extraordinary wealthy multi multi millionaire expert marksman barricaded in 47 room mansion on hundreds of acres estate with high powered weapons and armored personnel character in the garage and perhaps a 50 caliber machine gun. this is not going to be good. >> reporter: dupont was finally lured out. he was found to be mentally ill but competent to stand trial despite what prosecutors considered an elaborate act at faking insanity. >> he to me was a total participant in setting up and insanity defense by parading him looking crazier and crazier, more unkept with each court

hearing. >> reporter: heart broken nancy schultz followed the proceedings intensely. her tragedy now transformed into a hollywood movie with steve carell portraying dupont, mark ruffalo as her husband dave schultz and chaning tatum portraying david's brother mark. nancy told our ukee washington on talk philly about the big screen transformation of her darkest day. >> john dupont was a very controlling person. he want to do have the attention of -- actually have the the quality that other people gave like mark and dave and he couldn't have that. so it was a strange dynamics and in the film, dave, you know, tries to get in between mark and john are having a lot of difficulty working with each other. so dave gets in the middle and it creates a lot of animosity and tension between the two of them. >> dupont died in prison in 2010 but those who know this case intimately hope the life he took david schultz's life will be the lasting memory behind this saga.

♪ >> deep freeze that settled over the country causes a rare event in ohio. thunder snow. it only happens in extreme storms. further to the east snow blanketed the buffalo area where up to 6-inches fell. kathy will have more on the arctic blast headed our way. that's coming up in just a few minutes. >> a new jersey transit bus runs off the side of interstate 295 in burlington county. the bus collided with a car,

then crashed through a guardrail and went down an embankment in florence. three new jersey transit employees were aboard the bus. 91 was seriously injured. there is a sign on the bus that says, student driver but it's unclear if a student driver was behind the wheel at the time of the accident. the driver of the car that hit the bus was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. >> the man who drove his car into a schoolbus earlier this week in you faces charges. police say 26 year old justin thomas of morris planes, new jersey, has been charged with careless driving and another charge all related to tuesday's crash in princeton. three people were injured when thomas' bpw hit the bus on rou route 206 north of hutchinson drive. >> crews used a crane to lift a car from a huge sink hole in holiday, florida, today. on monday, the owner of that car noticed its tires were singing into the driveway just before the ground gave way. this is the third hole that's formed in this area. several homes have been
