we're hearing from that suspect's uncle, right steve. >> reporter: that is right. we spoke to that uncle by phone last night, drug use and prior run ins with the law are both thingsed he mentioned about his nephew but he surprised surprise about his capacity for violent crime. police say he was forced to contain a dangerous situation and was rapidly getting out offhanded. >> trying to grasp and we were going to deal witt the best we can. >> reporter: family member of the man police say committed two armed robberies in the span of 15 minutes say he never thought of his nephew as real event. police sent 41 year-old william mcnulty was shot and killed by a delaware state trooper shortly after 4:00 yesterday afternoon. police were pursuing mcnulty after they connect him to the armed robbery at an atm and one at a 7-eleven early yesterday morning. he was spotted and chased at several points throughout the day, fleeing at a high rate of speed and in a toyota cover role a finally after being cornered and given several

commands to stop police say mcnulty hopped a curve, drove into a patch of trees. suspect put the car in reverse and accelerated towards troopers, that is when police say they opened fire. we spoke with mcnulty's uncle by phone and he says that the family is surprised by the supreme sprees. >> has never owned a weapon before, not that i know of or anyone in the family would know of. it is just so unlike him for this to happen like this. >> reporter: well, police are withholding their identities but they do say that those troopers are six and -- i'm sorry, six and eight year veterans of the delaware state police assigned to state police. they are currently on leave until homicide detective wrap up that investigation. we are live from the cbs-3 news center i'm steve paterson, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". pennsylvania state police say man hunt for eric frein cost 11 million-dollar.

they took part in the 48 day church. frein was captured october 30th near a airplane hanger. prosecutors are now seeking the death penalty. developing right now, this morning an earthquake off the coast of indonesia a triggers a possible small tsunami. it happened late friday night, several cities report feeling the magnitude 7.1 quake, that is centered four hours from the capitol. there are no reports of any injuries or damage, so that is some good news but the threat of tsunami caused pan nick that area. right now only on three, an egg harbor city man is facing murder and arson charges following a suspicious house fire that just rattled a quiet community. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco was the only reporter there as a grieving community came together. >> reporter: justin palmer is being held here the atlantic county justice facility charged with murdering his mom and young son. on the same night a community is remembering their lives.

>> unaudible. >> reporter: gavin pap's father struggles for word as he talks about his little boy. with hugs and tears, the the community mourns the deaths of seven year-old gavin and his mom, michelle. police say they were murdered at the hand of michelle's boyfriend. >> we wanted everybody to come out today to celebrate life because anybody that knew shell, shell loved life. >> reporter: hundreds lit canned tolls remember the young mother and her son found burned inside their washington street home wednesday, after fire fighters put out the flames. thirty-eight year-old joseph palmer, lived with them, and was found injured outside. originally telling investigators that there was an intruder but police say palmer stabbed michelle and gavin to death and then set the fire. >> i can't believe this could happen in our little town and to people who are so kind and loving. >> reporter: many the at the vigil left notes to michelle

and gavin, a second grader at sprague elementary. family members wearing red because it was gavin's favorite color. >> i can remember gavin when he was about two years old he would sit in the church pew and when the choir would start to sing wow take out a book and try singing with us. >> reporter: that is so precious. >> he was, he was a precious little boy. >> reporter: palmer was arrested upon leaving the hospital friday afternoon. he is now being held on two million-dollar bail. in atlantic county, i'm diana rocco for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". some more sad news to report, child abuse, so extreme, that the delaware county district attorney says he a has never seen anything like it. here four are of the five adults being charged, police say shekia jackson is the mother of four children and thinks video of william wade being arrested earlier this week. police say the suspects physically and sexually abused five children at a home in upper darby. police alleged the children were kick, punched and body

slam. they also say that the adults shot bee bee guns at the children as a cruel form of discipline. >> i mean it almost seems so surreal that you do not think it is really happening like what world is this where this can occur. >> the children are now staying with relatives and officials say that they are doinge kay. accused kidnapper delvin barnes remains in jail after waving his right to seek bail. barnes pleaded not guilty to federal kidnapping charges on friday. during that pretrial hearing prosecutors revealed he allegedly bound and stuffed 22-year old carlesha gaither in the trunk of the car following her germantown abduction earlier this month. well, debate over a second casino license in philadelphia is heating up, as suburban politicians weigh in. the gaming control board is expected to make a decision during its next meeting on tuesday. back on friday delaware county leaders spoke out against the plan saying it could hurt business at harrah's leading to problems like what we're seeing now on the jersey shore. >> you think that the gaming

well, it was a near catastrophe for this golden retriever. it seems buddy the dog enjoys his friend so much, he actually tried to go into a house meant for cats. also, unsnap this picture happening in medford, new york. police same and had to use a crowbar and ham tore break apart the cat castle. buddy, thankfully was not hurt. there is in word on if he will face barking and entering charges. just a little something for through.

these services would make great gifts for that hard to shop for family members or friend. in san francisco i'm kara su boy for c-net to the come for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well, we'd like to bureau better weather. it the is too cold. our weather watchers are weighing in. you can see they have got some cold temperatures to talk b keith in saylorsburg calls it a cold morning. that is all you need to say because that is exactly what it is. we are finding temperatures that are cold, even a along the shore, greg wood in ocean view, new jersey. cold morning there. and i think it is clear, and crisp, and he is in upper township, new jersey. where ever you are, you are finding the cold weather. but it is pretty. lets take a look and see what we have. speaking of the shore we have atlantic city and starting to brighten up fortunately we like it when it least starts to look like, because it is bad enough when it is cold and dark. now it is cold and starting to get light.

we will move to another location at this point and find they are still making snow. it is still so cold, in jack frost big boulder. cold enough to add to their layers on the skies slope there. our headlines for the week, as you might imagine, for many it is a bitter taste of winter coming next week if you don't love cold weather we will fine colder weather next week. quiet but cold weekend this weekend and then a soggy monday. so there is something for everyone except warmth out there on the seven day forecast. we have 33 degrees in philadelphia. thirty-one in trenton. twenty-eight in wilmington. 24 degrees in the millville area. we have 23 in the poconos. it is in every location obviously. way too cold. it is way too cold in the south, it is 23 degrees in nashville, right now. we have 26 little rock. 25 degrees in birmingham. a 33 degrees in charleston, south carolina wherever one likes to go to stay away from cold winters. it is a minus two now,

temperatures has dropped from zero to minus two in bismarck, north dakota, 7 degrees in minneapolis, nine in rapid city. we will get into that over the next couple of days. not so much this weekend. we are 10 degrees below normal this weekend or so if we get even colder then. that storm scan three nothing. these clouds moving out. we will find lots of sunshine today but you do very little for weather as far as warming the temperatures up. we have the air to the north, arctic air to the north, it starts to spill down into our region. we will be finding that as we go especially through tuesday and wednesday and then by thursday it is starting to change a little bit and we will warm up a tiny bit. but until then we have temperatures that are running 15 to 20 degrees below average. expect that increasingly through tuesday, tuesday night, wednesday, wednesday night and then by thursday i think we will finally start to

see this jet stream back to the north a bit and temperatures while still cold won't be as cold as they have been on the tuesday and wednesday timetable. future weather, for sunshine, until we don't see it. that is when we will get some clouds overnight and first thing tomorrow. also expect i think today more in the way of clouds today, then tomorrow then we will see today. by monday more clouds and chances of some showers. is there a system in the golf triggering some of these showers on monday, and obviously we are not setting our clock by timing of this because others say it looks like a rainy day most of the day on monday. we will expect to see this pulling out maybe by monday night and then we're left with the cold air that comes in following the rain showers. this weekend quiet, cold but doable. over next couple days way too coal. 44 degrees today. tonight we will drop down to 25 and 32 degrees.

opened fire. we spoke with mcnulty's uncle by phone and says that the family is surprised by the crime spree. >> he has never owned a weapon before. not that i ever known of. so it is just so unlike him for this to happen like this. >> we know there were two police officers involved, two troopers involve in the gunfire, that there was one, a six year veteran of the force and one that is an eight year the veteran of the delaware state police both a assigned to troop one and as policy dictates both are on administrative leave until homicide detectives wrap up their investigation. for now we are live in the cbs-3 news center, i'm steve paterson for cbs-3 "eyewitness news", nicole. a new jersey transit bus runs off side of interstate 295 in burlington county. bus collided with a car and then crashed through a guardrail and went down an embankment in florence. three new jersey transit employees were on board that bus and none was seriously injured. is there a sign on that bus

that says student driver but it is unclear if a student driver was behind the wheel at the time of that accident. the driver of the car that hit the bus was taken to the hospital, with minor injuries. a man who drove his car in the school bus earlier this week now faces charges. police say 26 year-old justin thomas, of new jersey has been charged with careless driving and another charge related to tuesday's crash in princeton. three people were injured when thompson's bmw hit the bus on route 206, just north of hutchinson drive. well, brazen atm robbery is caught on cameras janel burrell from our sister station in new york spoke to a stunned owner and has more on the daring thieves. >> reporter: surveillance camera captured this stolen pickup truck backing in the cleaners at mccarter highway. driver smashes the the front glass and you can see a man in the black hoodie go right for the atm. >> it is the last thing you expect to see.

>> reporter: the group seen tearing the atm apart but has in luck. his accomplice uses his truck to force it opened. >> they spent ten minutes here. using crowbars. >> reporter: atm gets stuck under the truck so crooks take off and another car park outside and leave with no money. >> just very brazen. they had no fear of being caught i guess. >> reporter: short time later there were similar problems ten minutes away at applebees on springfield avenue. newark police say a truck ran through the front door and someone tried ripping off the atm. it is unclear if they got the cash. >> have you ever heard of anything like this. >> no, no, this is out of my realm of reality, i just can't believe it. it is crazy. >> reporter: just last week a stolen pick up slammed in the downtown newark convenient store where the thieves stole the cash machine, at this point, unclear if all of the crimes are linked. >> that was janel burrell reporting. it is 6:37 right now. search continues for these suspect jewelry thieves in philadelphia a. the two men and two women are

accused of breaking in to barsk jewelers tuesday morning. they got away with hundreds of thousands of dollars of american. the owner of the storm believes this isn't the first time suspects have struck in the neighborhood. the the pennsylvania a public utility commission discusses future of philadelphia gas works at a special hearing in the city. mayor nutter was among those testifying at drexel university. city council has block his plan to sell the utility to a private firm for nearly $2 billion. the mayor says that the failed pgw is a once in a generation opportunity and council should reconsider. >> can we in good conscious on behalf of the people that we serve try to figure out how to make things better, going forward? to reach a conclusion that is in fact in the best interest of all of the citizens of the city of philadelphia. >> mayor nutter says portions of the proceeds from the sale with go to sure up city workers pension fun.

on the cbs-3 healthwatch, more proof that losing weight is a challenge and that exercise has its limits. health reporter stephanie stahl has details of the new study taking some by surprise. >> reporter: exercise burns calories and is supposed to help you lose weight but not always. the new study of sedentary overweight woman found after 12 weeks of walking than a treadmill three times a week 70 percent gained weight wait and extra weight was fat, not muscle. >> these women may have been doing two things, eating more and moving less outside of the setting of exercise. >> reporter: research are say sometimes exercise can stimulate appetite hormones so people eat more when they work out more and they don't always accurately calculate calories. for example a bowl of cereals with skim milk can be 300 calories. it takes an her of brisk walking to burn those calories. >> exercise alone doesn't give thaw much weight loss. >> reporter: research found that people respond differently to the same amount

back on "eyewitness news" and soldiers are getting help making transition from the battle field to the ivy league, an intensive boot camp called warrior scholars project. jackie takes us to the yale university campus where vets are learning how to hit the books. >> reporter: when thomas rayo returned from afghanistan war he never wanted to carry a gun again but have after six years of combat the the 25 year-old was president confident about going to college. >> i was reluctant to just dive headfirst into the university without any experience. >> reporter: then he learned that the war your scholar project an academic boot cam that helps from the transition from the battle field to campus. in the summer of 2013 rayo and 23 other veterans filed into yale university for two weeks packed with academic help from top professors. >> i meet these students. i talk to them in class, out of class, and i know they will be successful but sometimes i think i'm more sure of that then they are.

>> reporter: christopher howell started the project. he/in the australian army special forces for a decade before enrolling in yale where he saw a need for vets friendly teaching practices that would bridge military and academic life. >> i teach 23 years old or pretty much people beyond college years and college is very different from one you experience in the military. >> reporter: yale graduate is overseeing expansion of the two-year old program at harvard and university of michigan to six more campuses. it has helped rayo make a change from solder to scholar. >> marines looked up to me for advice and stuff like that. i never thought to take that into a classroom but the warrior scholar project was about making yourself an asset to the classroom. >> reporter: warriors who mastered a military campaign are students waging an educational campaign. jacqueline, cbs news, new haven connecticut. >> 6:45 right now. there is a lot still coming up on cbs this morning saturday.

the shore. tim mitchell says it is so cold, outside through his area cold, chilly start to the day with the wind chill of 20 degrees. so yes, it is cold. that is why they can make snow, and they are doing that. they are making snow up at jack frost big boulder and you can see how the snow guns are pumping that snow out in the air that is so cold up there. it is a little tiny, tiny bit milder, and that is in reading. and it is still plenty cold. no snow on the ground. on. us are happy to say and see but some people love snow and they will get their chance, again many times before we get through with this winter. we have storm scan three showing no problems at all. you can see some clouds here. those clouds are moving away and we are left with temperatures that are cold. thirty-three at the airport in philadelphia, but everybody else, pretty much below freezing mark, 27 in allentown, 30 reading, 29 in wilmington, 29 in millville, 31 in the trenton area. twenty-four in atlantic city

at the airport 10 miles inland. cold, and arctic air is up there and it wands to send some of the little cold, streamers down into our area and we will be finding that as we go into this next week especially early part of the week as cold air starts to settle over us. the temperatures will be some 15 to 20 degrees below average. that starts on tuesday and wednesday, and then by thursday we will start a slight moderating trend but still it is going to be really cold this week. coming up as we get a reenforcing shot like it is not cold this weekend. it will be colder on that tuesday, wednesday timetable. so 15 to 20 below average. we are about 12 degrees below average for our high today but sunny, bright if that is any consolation and it probably isn't. we have temperatures tomorrow that will be cold, we have got a few clouds that will be coming in on sunday and i think a lot more coming in by the time we will get to monday. there is a weather disturbance well to the south in the gulf

right now but sending up some of that moisture. we will be getting into that as we go through the day on monday and even monday night and even well, will there be areas and pockets of heavier rain? it is possible. just know that monday looks to be the soggy day, tuesday at this new arctic air starts to come in here at least pieces of it we will be finding these temperatures dropping again and the winds will be getting pretty gusty. but for today, the high temperature, 44 in philadelphia, and 45 at the shore, 37 in the poconos. it is the the quiet festival in ocean city think weekend. lots of fun quiet things to do which you may be kind of quiet unless you are loudly complaining about 44 degrees which who could blame you. then tonight we will look at 32 degrees through center city. 25 degrees through the outlying area. it will be another cold night tonight, and all of the warm clothes and gear you have got do it and make sure your pets are as warm as you are. await a day tomorrow that will

>> reporter: do you see anything in this photo of the piece of chicken any image catch your attention? well, it certainly did for ernesto hernandez. he took that photo during dinner at his house in pocono summit. >> my wife is a divine cook. i'm about to fork into my chicken and low and behold there is a picture of what looks to be like jesus. it took me back a minute. >> reporter: image hernandez saw is small just on a little bite have of chicken but there is no mistaking there is a face there he saved it, but does admit it shrunk a bit in the night in the refrigerator. >> we all laughed and said wow, this is amazing, it is so clear, it is concise there. it looks like jesus. i'm in the saying it is jesus but there is a bearded man. >> reporter: hernandez always looks for signs not necessarily divine ones but last summer he thought he saw a face of geez news clouds outside his house. he shared this photo. if you tilt your head maybe you will will's see a face.
