>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> a cold and cloudy day is about to turn into a rainy night. we start tonight with our eye on the storm. right now a live look at storm scan3 shows a large system that is heading our way. it's expected to bring most of us a heavy dose of rain

throughout the night. good evening, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. there is a winter weather advisory in effect already for the poconos. meteorologist justin drabick is tracking it all for us and joins us now with his first forecast. hey, justin. >> good evening, natasha. we had a lot of clouds today, that's sign of that approaching storm. now we're seeing the front edge of this system starting to make also way into the delaware valley. light rain starting to break out around city. you may be getting raindrops from center city south and east into parts of south jersey certainly new castle county delaware seeing some steadier rain right now. notice the brighter colors on radar. overseas sill county maryland north of elkton towards fairhill and into southern chester county, that's a pocket of heavy rain that's pushing off to the north and east so this could move into delaware county in the next half hour so through the evening and overnight hours we'll continue to see rain move in from the south and west and initially there is still some cold air in place so winter weather advisories go into affect starting 7 o'clock until 9:00 a.m. monday for carbon and monroe counties so in this advisory initially we could see a brief period of

snow, sleet, freezing rain. little or snow accumulation expected for the mountains. ly up to .10 of ice accumulation. this will change to plain rain on monday. everywhere else across the region here's what you can expect. rain develops tonight, periods of rain through monday. three-quarters of an inch to possibly over 1 inch of rain before the storm system is out of here tomorrow evening. heaviest rain will be in the afternoon. both commutes will be on the slow side. we'll time things out and let you know when the dry weather returns in the full forecast. natasha. >> justin thank you. you can check the latest forecast any time on the new cbsphilly weather app. check live radar get weather alerts and share are weather photos with us. it's all available now in itunes google play. a 10-year-old boy is hospitalized after police in delaware county say he accidentally shot himself. this happened while the boy was waiting in his father's car just outside of an auto repair shop in sharon hill. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson joins us live from children's hospital of

philadelphia with the latest on this case. >> reporter: steve. >> reporter: natasha, when a pair of police officers arrived on scene they say there were no signs of life left in that boy. tonight the area's police chief says the only reason why he's fighting for it now is because of how fast that pair moved to try and bring that life back. >> he was lifeless at the time that we arrived. >> reporter: it is not clear if the boy police say accidentally shot himself in the head willfully or even partially recover. what is clear, at least to the chief, if it wasn't for the quick response of two officers, recovery would not be an option right now. >> the first responding officers accident happened the child right away put him in the police car one drove, one did cpr on him. >> i'm glad to be standing here saying that. >> reporter: shortly before 10:30 saturday night police say two young siblings a boy and a girl were in their dad's carly he was wrapping up work as a mechanic at this auto repair shop in the 1400 block

calcon hook road. his 10-year-old son found a gun shot himself. >> it entered his right jaw. one was actually in the back of the head. darby police chief say the gun is a .357 magnum. >> which is an extremely powerful weapon. >> reporter: police are investigating who the owner is and how it ended up in the hands of a child. well, that boy continues to fight for the life he nearly lost. >> the child is extremely lucky to be alive. like i said thanks to the quick work and smart reactions of two police officers. >> reporter: another thing that isn't clear in this case is if the delaware county district attorney will bring charges against the father for the gun that was found in the car. that, of course, will depend more on the ongoing police station. -- police investigation. oophoron, live at children's hospital of philadelphia, steve patterson, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> "eyewitness news" on the scene of another deadly

accident in the rhawnhurst section of philadelphia. a 64-year-old man was working on a consider car inside his garage when the vehicle shifted and fell on top of him. emergency crews were able to get him free but he did die at the hospital just about an hour later. and police tell us a drag race on the streets of south philadelphia ended with a deadly crassy crash overnight. this happened at columbus boulevard and east oregon avenue where the driver lost control and slammed into a utility pole. the 32-year-old driver was the only person in the car. developing news tonight out of the middle east where isis has released another video after the beheading of american aid worker peter kassig. kassig had been held hostage since october of last year. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette has more. >> reporter: islamic state militants posted the video online early sunday. it shows a masked isis militant dressed in black claiming he's beheaded american aid worker peter

kassig. >> this is peter edward kassig, a u.s. citizen of your country u. >> reporter: unlike previous isis videos this one did not show kassig alive before the beheading only the aftermath. there are similar thes are to the execution murder of four other westerners. >> appears to be the same person inside the government working very hard to exactly identify him and anything we can learn about him. the masked man who speaks in a bright tissue accent also warns isis will attack americans on u.s. streets. kassig was captured in syria a little more than a year ago. he converted to islam changed his name to abdul rack man while in captivity. his web site showed him helping wounded citizens. his mother said her son found his calling in syria. >> he has love for all who need help. >> reporter: president obama said in a statement today we grieve together and we also recall that the indomitable

spirit of goodness and perseverance that burns so brightly in abdul rahman kassig and which binds humanity together ultimately is the light that will prevail over the darkness of isil. wendy gillette for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, bill cosby's lawyer is speaking out now about the latest round of sexual abuse allegations levied against his client. he says the philly born entertainer will not dignify "decade olds discredit allegations with a response." he goes on to say the fact that they are being repeated does not make them true. cosby settled a civil suit in 2006 which claimed he drugged and assaulted women inside his home. he has never been criminally charged. cosby's up coming appearance on the late show with david letterman has been canceled. the philadelphia skyline, it has changed again. removing the pnb letters over the summer turned out to be a lot more difficult than

expected. today, though, crews returned to finish the job. "eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhury shows us how it all went down this time. >> reporter: this p will now stand for the word past. that's because it is in a past memory you will see these iconic letters in the philadelphia skyline. crews tried for a second time to remove the famous pnb letters on top of the highrise on one south broad street. it had stood there for more than 50 years without the letters the building looks different to life long philadelphians. >> it looks real naked. i can't believe they took it down. >> reporter: back in august, crews attempted to take down the 12 letters but only managed to remove three. each letter was about 16 feet tall and 3,000 pounds. the letters were in poor condition posing a safety hazard. >> they're so big, they're so huge, so heavy. >> reporter: during the first attempt crews learned the letters were in worse shape than originally thought.

sunday morning a chopper came in way plan b to safely remove the remaining nine letters. it took crews about 30 minutes to do so and caused some commotion and road closures. the n was the last letter to go. it represented the word new as in new skyline. >> philadelphia doing a lot of new things, so i guess that's good for the city. >> reporter: wells fargo bank leases part of the building and was responsible for the letters. earlier this year, a spokesperson said the company will not replace the letters so philadelphians will have no choice but to get used to this new look. in center city, syma chowdhury, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, men and boys all come together in prayer in what organizers hope will become an annual event. >> ♪ "eyewitness news" at first union therien church in center city for the first annual international day of prayer for men and boys. the focus here is on inspiring this generation to step up and

>> got a story you would like us to investigate? e-mail your ideas to i-team at cbs3.com. >> tonight on "eyewitness news" atat 11:00 a shocking new study just released today on heart attacks. researchers say the chances of dying from one increased if a patient suffers a heart attack in the hospital. health reporter stephanie stahl takes a closer look at what experts are now calling a wakeup call for hospitals at 11:00. now the snow, it just keeps on falling all across parts of the u.s. this is the scene now in kansas. snow covered roads are making for slick travel conditions and temperatures are also hovering at or below freezing. right here at home, we're keeping a very cse eye on the storm for you. meteorologist justin drabick is tracking it closely and we'll have more on what we can expect for the morning commute, that's coming up in just a couple minutes so stay with us for that.

also a man is hit by a train at a new york subway station and authorities say it was no accident. they say the 61-year-old victim was pushed onto the tracks at about 8:40 this morning just as a train was pulling in. the other person was able to slip away and in the confusion. nypd is still trying to identify that suspect. and ebola patient dr. martin salia is listed in extremely critical condition at the nebraska medical center. he was diagnosed in sierra leone where he was working as a surgeon at the time. he was flown to the u.s. yesterday. the state department says his wife requested his evacuation and agreed to reimburse the u.s. government for expenses. salia is a citizen of africa but has permanent u.s. residency. he lives with his wife and two children in maryland. and now a cruise ship arrives back in california after 172 people fall very ill with the highly contagious norovirus. the crown princess was on a nearly month long voyage to

tahiti. more than 4100 people were on board. now the cdc says 158 people sickened were passengers, the other 14 were crew members. in april nearly 130 people on the same ship contracted norovirus during a seven-day cruise off the california coast. >> all right, good sunday night. hope you're having a great weekend so far. little bit milder today with those clouds with the approaching storm system so we're looking at mainly just a rain event across the delaware valley. let's check in with our weather watchers and we'll show you the milder temperatures tonight and bring up the list here. riverside ron, he's checking in at 42 degrees, one of the warmer spots, avondale, gary at 40. down in mays landing alex checks in at 42 degrees as well in willow grove looking at 40 degrees from bar before. interesting in avondale from gary, as he did report some sleet mixing in with that rain. he's actually reporting some heavy sleet and this is showing up on radar with some brighter colors, pretty

interesting but eventually the warm air will win out and everybody sees plane rain from the storm system. if you want to be a part of the "eyewitness news" newscast and if you love weather join our eyewitness weather watchers. check out the details on cbsphilly.com/watchers. take you outside to center city right now. we're going to get the rain in here for philadelphia over the next hour if you don't have it just yet and that rain will continue to move in from the south and west. check it out on storm scan3. pretty large storm system but it's pushing out the colder air. still some cold air trapped up near the poconos so initially there could be a little bit of freezing rain up there but most of the snow well to the north and west. there comes the rain in from the south. let's zoom in a little bit closer here. i mention they had brighter color showing up here on radar. that could be the sleet mixing in especially reporting in the avondale area which is in southern chester county so that's not out of the question and that rain will continue to move north and east and pretty much pick up in coverage and intensity through the overnight hours into your monday. here's the milder air. compared to this time yesterday we're anywhere from four to 15 degrees warmer so

that's a sign of things to come. looks like we'll reach the 50's for a high temperature on monday. 44 at the airport, 43 in wilmington, so well above freezing. the only problem spot could be up in the poconos. right now hanging at 33 degrees. here's the setup. storm system will move in. cold front brings in the moisture from the south and west. there could be some pockets of heavier rain especially monday afternoon. this comes to an end early monday evening. then we're going to open the flood gates for some arctic air. this is true arctic air. this is the coldest we've seen all season. cold air sticks around on wednesday with temperatures 20 degrees below average. here comes the rain overnight. initially there could be light freezing rain in the poconos. warm air wins out when everybody sees plane rain during the day. 8:00 a.m. monday morning we'll have the rain around so this will slow the commute down. looks like the heaviest rain moves in earl to midafternoon. should come to an end by 7, 8 o'clock or so, at least the steady rain as that system

moves off shore and then the cold air returns on tuesday despite some sunshine. hov how much rain are we talking about? it's needed drain. it's been pretty dry over the past few months. some spots could pick up over an inch with the heart of the heaviest rain pretty much right over philadelphia and surrounding suburbs. temperatures tomorrow back into the 50's, actually approaching 60 degrees to the south especially in the capital city of delaware and in south jersey still cool to the north. looks what happens tuesday. these are afternoon temperatures. 20's and low 30's, mid 30's at pest -- best for our highs. late monday night, tuesday morning these are wind chill values. it will feel like the teens early monday morning and not much better -- tuesday morning. not much better into tuesday afternoon. so the rain develops tonight, it's chilly low of 39 for center city. periods of rain monday, heaviest during the afternoon and a high temperature of 55 degrees. enjoy the fists if you can despite the wet weather 'cause we're back into the 30's tuesday and wednesday
