♪ >> we begin with breaking news. a serious crash on the new jersey turnpike in middlesex county. this happened tonight just north of exit eight in cranberry township in the truck lanes. it is involved three tractor trailers. those trucks caught fire as you see. we're hearing reports one person has been killed but so far new jersey state police will not confirm that. all three northbound truck lanes are closed in that area right

now. one of the three inner lanes is also shut down. we're also following another big temperature dip in our arctic blast. good evening i'm jessica dean. >> i'm charisma. meteorologist kathy orr is live for us outside on the cbs- cbs-y deck bundled up with a look at possible record low temperatur temperatures. kathy? >> we are talking about bone chill cold. those winds gusting to 30 miles an hour and that cold goes right through you. on storm scan3 the skies are clear. so we're just looking at very dry conditions. this air is so dry and the winds are so strong that it's making it feel like it's in the teens. right now sustained winds in philadelphia out of the west at 20 miles an hour. in reading sustain winds at 16 miles an hour. it feels like 11 in philadelphia. allentown and millville. it feels like five below zero in the poconos. now, this is what we're talking about as far as the cold, the record in philadelphia 20. set back in 1936. we will at least tie it if not

break it overnight tonight and many records are in jeopardy come tomorrow morning. wind chills will be below 5 degrees going below zero for the entire night in the poconos and the lehigh valley, in the single numbers in philadelphia and suburbs. wind chill in the teens and the same goes down the shore wind chills between 15 and 19 degrees come tomorrow morning. coming up we'll talk about one more bitter day that feels more like a cold day in january late blast of cold and then warmer but wetter. i think we'll take that trade off much that's coming up in the seven day forecast when i join you inside. >> all right, kathy, thanks so much. well, this man in the bright red shirt wasn't delivering toys in upper darby. police say he was stealing them. but as our diane in rock companies shows us the brazen thief didn't arrive empty handed. she joins us live from south philadelphia. diana? >> reporter: jessica, as you can probably tell that crook was carrying a baby. police say as we head towards

the holidays these package thefts happen more and more but tonight we talk to one victim who says it will never happen to her again. she caught it all on tape and she turned that video over to police. >> my first thought i was angry. report roar this camera was watching when crook stole a box of toys off her upper darby porch. minutes after a ups delivery. but what's more disturbing than a holiday package napper -- >> he you've the baby as a cover to steal. >> reporter: louis simon installed cameras around her home last year after someone tried to break in. when is he arrived home last monday night and saw her gate open and the package missing she went right to the footage. >> this is the gate in the front you saw was left open? >> just the way it is is exactly how it was when i came home. this one was open and the other one down below was open. i had asked ups man to leave the package to the right of front door. >> reporter: you see. ups driver follow the instructions she left. he drops the package in view of

the camera then leaves. minutes later, man walks from a neighboring porch carrying a child. he stands there till the coast is clear and makes off with the box full of toys. a package meant for her sister. >> that's got to make you mad someone you don't know stealing from you and standing on your front porch. >> pretending they live here. i have a problem with that. >> if i don't stop him and others like him from doing this, they will continue to do it to other people. >> reporter: police are trying to identify the crook and louis simon is taking precautions of her own. she left a note on her mailbox and door for drivers not to leave packages if no 11 is home. >> it's christmastime. holidays, christmas nobody wants their stuff stolen. >> reporter: and ups says rather than leaving packages on attended you can go to their website and change delivery times or addresses to have it delivered to a place where someone will be there to receive it. we're live in south philadelphia

tonight, diana rocco, cbs-3 oy witness news. >> some shocking new details emerge tonight in the investigation into the deaths of a former cooper health ceo and his woof. courier post is reporting that john sheridan jr. and his wife joyce were attacked in their home before a fire on septembe september 28th. relative says joyce sheridan was stabbed at least a times and that her husband had tentative establish wound. tom wilson is a family spokesman forever dan's son he released a statement to "eyewitness news" tonight that read from the beginning we have said that no one wants answers about our parents's deaths more than us. real answers will only come after a full and thorough investigation. we do not condone releasing information in a piecemeal fashion because of the frustration with the' ". he goes on to say. it is not helpful getting to the truth about what happened to our parents. we are committed to getting to the truth and that means we will

not comment while the investigation is on going. >> developing news at this hour investigators are still looking for the cause of a four alarm fire at columbus farmers market today. those flames ripped through the building creating smock that could be seen for miles. the farmers market is on rout route 206 in springfield township. "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones has more on that fire and its aftermath. >> reporter: the timing of the fire is terrible thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of year here. as flames shot through the roof shop owners could only watch and hope their businesses didn't burn. >> we walked up from the wawa and we just waiting that see what's going on. >> building four of the columbus farmers mark complex off route 206 was heavily damaged. strong winds fanned the flames. one hadn't dread 50 firefighters balanced the four alarm fire to keep it couldn't tape. >> cold weather and winds were really a big issue on this.

give the fire a good head start once it started in there. >> reporter: indications are most businesses and shop owners in this second of the market have lost everything. and with thanksgiving right around the corner affected shop owners are left scrambling. >> we don't know what's going to transpire from the fire or anything and they have outside whether we'll be to open out there or not. we have a location outside also. >> the market was closed for business on tuesday as normal and no one was injured. the fire march hal is investigating a cause of the fire which started just after 2:00. after another fire in the 70s the fire chief says renovations to the market then helped protect it now from catastrophic damage. >> the building, it was built with fire walls in place which help us tremendously to confine fire to one second of the market. >> that is building four. you can tell it has extensive damage to it but immediately to the right that is building five. so you can see how the fire wall came into play here as building five looks relatively okay. but still at this point it's not

48 year old jean dom brow ski was reportedly living with the elderly woman and had power of attorney. she's now facing serious charges in a case that stunned neighbo neighbors. >> i feel dirty i can't believe people actually behave that way. you know, you hear about crap like that and you see it on to. v, and i always say to myself, you know, jeez i'm glad i don't know anybody like that. i didn't know i did. >> dom brow ski is being currently held on $2 million bail. she's facing charges of aggravated and simple assault as well as reckles recklessly endag another person and neglect of care. authorities in israel are on high alert tonight after terrorists storm is synagogue in jerusalem killing five people. it happened as dozens of worshipers gathered for morning prayers. reports say it was carried out by two palestinians men armed with a gun and but which are knives. police killed the two suspects

>> pennsylvania gaming regulat regulators today awarded philadelphia's second casino license and depending on who you talk to south philadelphia is the big winner or maybe loser. the live hotel and cass zen foe will be built near the stadium complex at packer and dare yen. of course holiday inn sits on that property right now. they say it will be refurbished and expanded. now the developers and some residents in the area are thrilled with this news but others think the project will hurt neighboring economies. there's no word on whe when construction might begin on that $425 million project. >> a look at another major project. the king of prussia mall getting a makeover. next what's being added for shoppers in the new addition. >> also, ahead tonight major air bag recall could be getting bigger. more than 20 million vehicles from several major car makers to be affected. we'll have the new information for you next. >> and -- >> one breath is all it will take and it will kill you.

>> the federal government is now calling on auto makers to recall all cars that have potentially dangerous air bag. that recall would cover vehicles made by ford, honda, chrysler, mazda and bmw. it would bring the number of total vehicles recalled to more than 20 million. now the defective air bags made have already been linked that five deaths and more than 100 injuries. in those cases, air bags unexpected exploded sending

shrapnel through the vehicle. the current recall only covers cars in high humidity regions. they believe the conditions can lead to the problem. >> shoppers take note the king of prussia mall is getting bigger. construction is now under way on an expansion that will add more than 50 stores and restaurants. what's more, the construction will evenutally link the court and the plaza making king of prussia one big mall. no need to walk outside any mo more. the expansion is expected to be wrapped up by the fall of 2016. when you're asleep you're most vulnerable to a fire in your home most deadly fires start in the mill of the night. even if you have smoke alarms, even if you have an escape plan some firefighters say do one more thing before you turn off the light. in a house fire it's not the flames but the smoke that kills. >> one breath is all it will take and it will kill you. how long would you say

people have to to get out of their home in situation. >> seconds. >> but there is a way to buy time. >> this house is being set on fire on purpose to prove a point. to survive an overnight fire -- >> sleep with your door closed. >> the fire starts in the living room. nearby on the same floor are two bedrooms. down the hall is the kids bedroom. their door will stay open. on the other side is the master bedroom. that door will be closed. >> we watch along with deputy chief eric fleming of philadelphia fire. one minute into this fire smoke is gathering on the living room ceiling. it starts to trickle into the kids bedroom. two minutes, thick black smoke is choking out the air in the living room and the kids bedroom with that open door. now take look at the master bedroom. you can see the orange glow of the fire at the bott top of the door but so far no smoke. >> smoke goes up to the ceiling and back down. if you have a door closed it cannot easily get through that

door. >> at three minutes the entire living room is in flames. the air is black and fire is going down the hallway. dough brie begins to fall from the ceiling and smoke consumes the kids room. but in that mastery bedroom even with that fire raging outside the door, there's barely a sign of smoke here. >> when you close the door, how much extra time would you say that gives you? you going to have at least, you know, five to sick minutes to actually initiate your escape plan. >> okay, guys. >> at this point firefighters put out the blaze. walking through the aftermath, you can see the difference. in the kids room, the ceiling is black from smoke. >> the temperatures that the sealing in this room would have been over a thousand degrees. >> but the master bedroom it looks almost untouch. >> the hal low core door which most reasonable houses have will hold fire and smoke out for between six and 20 minutes. >> fire officials know not everyone one will sleep with a

closed door. >> i'm sure that there's a lot of kids who would rather the door be opened and maybe some parents, too. >> that's when it's even more important to have smoke detect detectors right by your bedroom even inside. whatever you do, don't count on the smell of smoke to wake you up. >> a lot of times since most fires occur at night, a lot of people never wake up. the fire officials we talk to said have at least one smoke detector per floor and check those batteries twice a year. also, look for a second exit in every bedroom maybe window. and practice your escape plan with your family so you're ready for the worst. >> clear skies and cold conditions are making for a very chilly night across the delaware valley. we have arctic air and blustery winds. let's start off in millville where mike says it is 24 degrees. here's his advice. stay inside. of course mike i could not agree more. right now it's 25 degrees in upper darby and we're looking at

conditions that are going to fall to about 20 degrees there. now, the coldest temperature i could find was in berneville, yes. ellen says it is 18 degrees with winds right now out of the southwest at 12 miles an hour. he says it is so cold the dogs don't want to go out. do you blame them? if you would like to be an "eyewitness weather" watcher join the team. just go to cbsphilly.co cbsphilly.com/watchers. >> i don't think any us are going to want to go out at least for the next 24 hours. let's take look outside the snow guns were going all day and into the nighttime hours at jack frost big boulder. the perfect conditions for maybing packed powder. we have to make the snow in the poconos but they do not have to make the snow in buffalo, new york. the same frigid air mass is creating this dangerous wintry scene in western new york. people south of buffalo digging out of 6 feet of snow in some areas. and more heavy snow is expected in these lake effect snow bands.

they are driven by the wind with winds out of the west southwest they go across the great lakes and continue to dump snow. this lake effect snow band dumping two to 4-inches of snow an hour. it has been set up in a similar pattern over the course of the day and the evening. we're talking about places like lackawanna and also down hamburg and/or charred park. if you have any friends in this region room sure you've been hearing from them because they are snowed in. and that's going to continue. they can reach a record over 70-inches in a 24 hour period. fast forward, though, to our region and you can see just dry conditions. no snow. but just. 25 degrees in philadelphia. the poconos 14 degrees. and the cold will continue overnight tonight. we will see the peak of the cold air. during the day tomorrow still chilly. temperatures will be in the 30s. the cold begins to relax on thursday. you can see the blue going further to the north but then a piece of that arctic air returns for friday after that we'll

begin to improve in temperature. overnight tonight the low temperature 20. it is not the earliest we've ever seen this temperature in november. you can go back to novembe november 7th in 1962. but it is still a significant temperature. philadelphia's record 20. teens elsewhere across the delaware valley. we will either tie it or break it overnight tonight. tomorrow here are the details. freezing temperatures. winds at 10 miles an hour. gusts to 25. wind chills in the 20s. on the "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast looking at temperatures that will warm up by saturday, sunday 50s. monday and tuesday in the 60s. that's what i'm talking about. we'll be back with beasley and sports right after this.
