on patrol to make sure roads are clear so you can get to your thanksgiving destination, safely. it is wednesday, november 26th, hi, good morning, i'm ukee washington. i'm's quarter von tiehl. this day is all about timing, just awful timing for this storm, katie, one of the busiest travel days of the year. >> it is, you said it, terrible timing. if we were dealing with this storm system on any day it would be a very big mess but sheer fact that so many people will be out there today, that is the issue. storm scan three is obviously showing signs of life already so here we go, you might have just woke up, it is already here. notice there is no snow just yet being reported but there will be that mixing that takes place. interestingly it is milder right now then most of the rest of the day will be here because we will gradually see temperatures start to fall, in one else, unless you are in the appalachian mountains of west virginia seeing any kind of mixing at least at this point in the mid-atlantic but that will just start to change over. there are winter storm alerts
4:31 am
posted for northwestern half of the delaware valley. we are looking at winter storm warnings from western chester, mercer and all point northwest in the viewing area. winter weather advisories, out towards delco, philadelphia county and then again adjacent suburbs just outside of the city. so once we will see change overtaking place you will not get enough warm air to help any additional change back to rain. once it starts to snow, that is what you'll find until the storm is gone basically. precipitation rates throughout the course of the take is there an obvious spike here mainly midday is when we will see the heavier precipitation coming in whether it is rain mix or just straight up snow. that would be the worst time for you to be heading outside for the beginning of your holiday travel. if you can wait this out until later on tonight that would probably be a little bit better at least but even if you are hitting the road right now we are just looking at rain as rain continues to slide in from south to north. between about 7:00 to 9:00 give or take an hour or
4:32 am
two for that window mixing will begin for philadelphia and suburbs anyway and then as we go in towards early afternoon is when we are looking at heavier snowfall again, north and west is where you'll fine bulk of the snow accumulation but primarily a rain making storm system off into interior south central, new jersey but you will see some snow mix on the tail end of the storm. it depends where you are but everybody is affected by this. 50 degrees, too warm for anything but rain out of philly international. even mount pocono temperatures are too marginal. we are at 44 in ac. wind will continue to crank and intensify towards the shore points here as the day progresses but down the shore i think snow, you'll get ripped off here today. looking for snow head north and west. up in the poconos we could see half full, more like a slushy 2 inches around philadelphia a more on the exact totals for every location here coming up later in the show, vittoria, over to you. good morning, everyone.
4:33 am
still our majors are moving just fine, traveling on i-95, schuylkill, blue route, so on, so forth we are moving at a good speed. more i look at this camera as katie was looking at that rainy was seeing the water droplets on the lens and notice by this shading right here that is reflection of that water. if you are traveling on i-95 it is starting to get slick, be mindful of that. our bridges definitely get slippery, right now ben franklin bridge there is in volume but look at the glare you'll notice as you make your way westbound on the bridge but both sides really because of the weather. speed sensors are looking okay for now but we definitely caution you to go a little extra slower. it will be wet, slushy, as katie has been talking about here. so just be prepared for that. we have an accident on the pennsylvania turnpike around willow grove, two right lanes block, center and right lane is block. it is an overturned tractor trailer situation. tractor trailer haded gone in the ditch on the shoulder. try to avoid that if you can.
4:34 am
we will let you know when it clears out of the way. things in new jersey moving well n delays or problems for delaware. also in delays or problems just yet at philadelphia international airport or for mass transit. we will let you know in finks change, erika. whether you are hitting the roads or skies, our approaching winter weather could make things tricky. >> what is best way to get where you wanting to? "eyewitness news" has you covered. let's begin with jan carabao over at philly international. good morning. >> reporter: erika and ukee, good morning. it is raining slightly here a at philadelphia international airport and windy as well, but still nothing compared to what we will see later today. all of these early travelers are hoping to hop on these planes before this weather moves in. day before thanksgiving is typically one of the busiest travel days of the entire year but add in bad wet tore that holiday travel and you could have major delays. we have the snow crews on stand by here at the airport and over at 30th street station trains are rolling in as well. many people will rely on the
4:35 am
rails this holiday. around 80,000 people are expected to come through philadelphia alone, amtrak has added trains to accommodate those people but most of the prime time tickets in the northeast corridor are already taken. we're told we should still call and check because people often check at the last minute. back here at the airport snow crews are on stand by the temperature on the ground really matters as far as snow sticking and resulting delays, still the airlines are planning ahead and offering a chance for have travelers there just bracing for the worst. >> i'm gearing up, i already made a play list on my ipod. i necessity i will be sitting in the airport a long time. >> airline has listed their fees and they are encouraging people to change their flights to avoid wednesday and anticipated bad weather. that is a i good thing. that may spread out some of the travel. >> reporter: of course, you should always call ahead to check on your flight status here at philadelphia international airport before heading out the door, it is easy to do, just call 800-phl-gate. reporting live, outside of
4:36 am
philadelphia international airport, this morning, jan carabao for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> so much better to await at home. >> if you are hitting the road are plane you may want to give yourself extra time to get to your destination. >> "eyewitness news" reporter nicole brewer joins us live where penndot crews started their preparations overnight, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. hustle of the holiday season just got a little more complicated. i don't have to tell you guys but, of course, our area first significant snowstorm just happens to fall in one of the busiest travel days of the year. before you get to where you are going to day you might want to consider penndot's plan of action. we are here in the penndot yard where they have been preparing from yesterday on. in montgomery, chester and bucks county, crews will be out in in midnight with trucks in philadelphia and delaware counties in full force by this morning. as katie mentioned the heavier snowfalls happening in the afternoon, so naturally that
4:37 am
is when most of the trucks will be on the road. in all, penndot has access to 444 vehicles, ready to take on wednesday's winter storm event. fortunately, for them we have had two warm days and rain, of course, is supposed to come before the snow. >> road pavement is still quite warm. we don't expect to see a heavy accumulation on the road surfaces. you will see more on the lawns. >> reporter: so again, penndot asking folks just to use some common sense when they help head out and about, this wednesday, obviously, it is adjusting travel times but decreasing their speed and increasing the amount of room between themselves and other vehicles especially those penndot trucks. if you do see a penndot vehicle give them about six car lengths to get their jobs, done. that is latest live from the penndot yard in norristown, nicole brewer, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> nicole, thank you. we have reached out to
4:38 am
peco this morning. they plan to have extra staffing in place throughout the day today and also will make any adjustments as needed. just in case parts of the area start to lose power because of the storm. we want to see your pictures of the snow and wintry weather once it hits? so help us tell that story by ending us your pictures, post them to twit error facebook page and include the hash tag cbs-3 storm you may see them right here on "eyewitness news". our eye on the storm coverage continues right herere, live look at 30th street station right there. there you go. checking out some early travelers. they are smart ones getting out early before the snow starts. >> all aboard. we will be right back.
4:40 am
4:41 am
15. fellas take a page out of book of allen iverson starting tonight, play every game like it is your last, the wins will come. college ball big five in action at liacouras center, that is tony hicks with the first half three pointer. they led quakers with 17. mark williams had 24. owls beat quakers 76-67. lasalle, st. joes, drexel and villanova all won last night. let's talk about what is coming in our area, right now with katie. >> we have on rain moving in as we just saw. >> right now no mixing taking place at all. if you are ready to hit the road, smooth sailing, to at least relative liz speaking none of that mixes has happened. we will have a window of opportunities basically. >> i saw a spritz driving in this morning. >> yes, that moisture is already here, and, it is going to be here all day. we have an all day event out of this. that is what is so terrible. is there not a window of opportunity here unless you
4:42 am
are leaving right new to maybe try to beat the worst of this because once we see change overtake place the snow that is it. you are stuck with snow and we will see decent a accumulation of the heavy wet slushy snow. great for snowball and snow man making but does it mess with travel and, on this day of all days, so, you know, that is the unfortunate parties just the timing. here we go storm scan three still bringing in rain at this point, mixing has begun far off to the southwest here in the hundred tane terrain of west virginia. it is simply too warm at this point. as we zoom it out one more time here this storm is not the most organized system we have ever seen but there is moisture on this raid air and all that has to roll in before we can say we're done with this. in addition, it is a storm intensifying crossing the mid-atlantic. that is how it will generate its own cold air and bring in very heavy precipitation but there are a slew of limiting factors here. the recent warmth we had.
4:43 am
temperatures air above freezing for now and fact that it is starting off as rain and just the snow will be falling during daylight would limit the amount of snow powe tension in terms of inches accumulating for those very reasons. wet snow ratio would be more like 6 inches for everyone inch of rain. typically you look at the ratio of ten to one for every inch have rain we have 10 inches of snow but this is too much in moisture in this. that is why we are looking at heavier wet snow variety, more liquid based rather than that light fluffy variety. here's where you will end up though with snowfall totals later on tonight. coat to go an inch or two for interior south central new jersey. two to 4 inches for northwestern philadelphia county and just to the adjacent suburbs, five to 10 miles to the north or west of the city, four to six though more likely in upper bucks, western chester and montgomery up to the lehigh valley but you could ease liz top half foot if not eight or more inches in those other
4:44 am
locations. temperatures are generally in the 40's for now or lower 50's. wind is starting to pick up a little bit but not too bad, just yet, lets give you one more check of the eyewitness weather seven day forecast, get through today and then it is smooth sailing. chilly, for the holiday and into the weekend as we maryland rate up in the 40's but we are at least going to be looking at much quieter weather but, of course, it is all about here and now. we will continue our team three weather coverage with meteorologist carol erickson live with the cbs-3 mobil weather lab tracking conditions in any neighborhood which we find her and right now she's at 30th street station. carol, lots of people passing through there making their way to the thanksgiving table, what are you finding right now. >> it is are quiet out there because as you have been saying and we were talking about yesterday, it is important to get out early on a day like this. so that is why i think a lot of people have have. even though it is not crowded. i say that but it vice
4:45 am
movable. we are not stuck in any traffic jams. we are cruising outside the 30th street station. we were on the other side. it is just as quiet out here this morning. roads are not bad at all, fine mist through philadelphia. it is as you have been saying the conditions deteriorate later. let me show you a graphic and this will let you see how the day will shape up. we are going to be watching for some driving concerns, obviously and the rain goes over to some wet snow, and it should be worse that i-95 corridor, as it often is, is that delineating line of the rain and the snow. we're going to gradually find that possibility of some of that snow moving east of that i-95 line but it gets a sharp increase in the snow totals farther west from i-95, retuesdayed visibility. because of the temperatures being as warm as they are we are looking at temperatures right now 50 degrees, in the mobile weather lab. we will find this snow when it does come over here temperatures will be lower but
4:46 am
also that flakes will be big, giant, wet, slushy and they will be all over the street signs. if you don't know where you are going in this kind of weather, it will be more difficult to get around because you may be finding the hampered visibility with the snow coming down and also some of the road signs, covered up. so we are looking at right now right around 30th street station, post office area, in the looking bad at all, get out, do what you need to do at this point this morning, vittoria: >> ahh, carol. again, you know, carol, thanks so much for being out there on the road and giving us a direct look at what you are dealing w as she mentioned the roads, you can travel on them right now obviously. it is not awful just yet with you those slick spots are out there and because it is so early we are not at 5:00 a.m. roads are still wide opened for you.
4:47 am
problem will come in when weather tarts to get more heavier but also on top of that when rush comes in. so, lets start with 309, 309 looking good right around pennsylvania turnpike, schuylkill expressway in major delays even around 476, or center city philadelphia, vine street expressway all moving well. speed sensors are still great. fifty-five is our average on all majors and traveling in delaware and new jersey. for the most part we're in the green. it is slick. you did see that when carol was driving around 30th street station. take it easy. traveling on the eastbound side of the pennsylvania turnpike at willow grove two right lanes blocked as a result. tractor trailer situation. this tractor trailer went in the ditch. try to avoid that if you can. mass transit and things at the airport are still okay. ukee. still ahead working for thanksgiving? well, guess who thinks you should get extra pay for it. >> but first here's what is coming up tonight on cbs-3.
4:50 am
it is 4:50. >> money watch's jill wagner joins us from the new york stock exchange and a huge milestone for apple yesterday. what happened? >> reporter: well, good morning, ukee and erika. apple's market value has surpassed $700 billion, that happened in the trading day yesterday, it backtracked a bit. it is the most ever, for a u.s. company and just to put this in perspective it is double the market value of google. exxon mobile has second highest market value at $400 billion. apple stock is up 47 percent this year, as we know, customers just can't seem enough to get enough of those new apple iphones. >> yes, indeed. yes, lots of americans will be working on thanksgiving tomorrow and now one lawmakers i understand thinks that they should be paid a lot more for it. tell us more. >> reporter: that is right,

roughly one in five americans work on thanksgiving, an ohio state representative mike foley, he wants retail tours pay triple wages for anybody who has to work in a store on thanksgiving. his bill would also let workers bow out of taking a shift on the holidays without penalty. this year we know more retailers are staying opened on thanksgiving, and for longer hours. so just some way to compensate them for working, ukee and erika. >> i can understand that. >> thanks, jill. >> talk to you later. coming up after a short break traffic and weather together.
4:53 am
here's traffic and weather together, good morning, vittoria. >> good morning, everyone. the roads, so far are still pretty good. if you are traveling on any of our majors our speed sensors are still high up there but traveling on the schuylkill expressway is not a problem just yet but we are still waiting on the rush and more
4:54 am
precipitation and katie will be talking more about that but as we look at 76, it is a breeze, we have had earlier maintenance around girard avenue but they have cleared out of the way, 476, in problems around mid county tolls or anywhere, in matter traveling around schuylkill, i-95, i mean really traffic is great. as we move new to take a look at the map our speed sensors high up in the 50's. fifty-five on the blue route, 95 still lots of green all over. we are still not seeing major delays at philadelphia a international airport. we are looking good mass transit wise. we are still a good commute. traveling however on the pennsylvania turnpike eastbound right around fort washington we still have two right lanes being block, as a result of the accident involving an overturn tractor trail their went into a ditch. traveling around this area it may be a squeeze for you. as far as traveling later on things are just going to get bit. >> it is really looking like this will be a day that goes downhill, not just with our forecast but also with how
4:55 am
wouldn't it be nice if we can say traffic is so good all day today with the day that it is, before thanksgiving, but we can't. it does look like we will start to sees that mixing from rain to snow, beginning to get underway here, relatively soon. you can see that already taking place in the higher terrain of west virginia, eventually some of that colder air will wrap in for us as well. we are finding strictly rain for now, does begin to be more of a snow producing event in southeastern pennsylvania and northern new jersey. here's what we're expecting four to 6 inches, higher totals in the lehigh rally. by the time it is all said and done we have snow with up to a half foot or so. two to 4 inches have rain mixing over to snowfall in the northwestern suburbs outside of philadelphia and more like a slushy 2 inches or so at most around this city itself is and then lesser totals as you head south and east. you get gipped from any snow with temperatures that are just too warm through south
4:56 am
and east tern more counties on have the viewing area moving forward, at least turkey day will provide something to be thankful for. weather calms down. it will stay that way for us. chilly for all of the black friday shopping that you are diagnosis to work off calories but it will be dry and we can expect some sunshine not just for both holidays but also into the rest of the weekend too, erika, back to you. our live team three coverage of the priest thanksgiving snow continues in our next hour of "eyewitness news". from the roads to the airport we will check with our report's cross the region, see how weather is affecting traffic on one of the busiest travel days of the year. we are back at the top of the hour, glad you are with us, good morning.
4:59 am
we have our eye on the storm this morning. we have on is rain right now but storm scan three shows first significant snowfall of the season heading our way, right now and it could in the come at a worse time. in just a few hours roads and airports will be packed and the snow will start to fall making holiday travel a bigger mess than normal. we will have have live team coverage of the holiday storm including what to expect when you head out the door this morning. also developing right now another night of unrest in ferguson. protesters face off with police for the second straight night. now we're hearing from the officer about the faithful night that he shot an unarmed teenager. it is wednesday, november 26th, good morning, i'm ukee washington. i'm quarter von tiehl. we have a few school closing, the first of our year and some delays this morning. you'll find those at the bottom of your screen.
5:00 am
right new we want to get to that live team three coverage of the priest thanksgiving day storm that is expect to make traveling a real nightmare today. we will check with our reporters across the region in just one minute. but first lets check with kate toy see is what up with the system moving in, good morning. >> reporter: yes, eventually, we will see the rain that is currently out there, ukee, start to turn over to snow. once we see that take place, we have snow coming down. sooner you see it, generally the more likely you are to see decent accumulation. at the moment notice we don't have any pink of purple showing up just yet. way too warm for snow just yet but this is a storm that is intensifying as it wraps itself up and moves up the coast and that means it can generate its old cold air and we have cold air coming to join forces with it here and help get things underway here with the snow eventually. so at the moment, ready to leave the house you are just looking at wet roads as opposed to slick travel, courtesy of icy precipitation,
