effect. we are seeing them take effect from seven to 9:00 a.m. they are not posted just yet but slate todd take effect. winter storm warnings for all of the counties shaded in the pink. northwestern half the of the delaware valley and winter weather advisory down in through philadelphia county and immediate vicinity. lets talk about this precipitation. whether you are looking at rain or snow, the brunt of precipitation comes at midday. so around lunchtime or so, give or take an hour or two or three, it is when you'll fine the heavier of the precipitation. it is also when that snow will be probably thumping at its hardest too. so we will start to stack up some snow totals it looks like at that point of the day, if perhaps you are maybe working a half day or hitting the road after that point, just, you know, it is pack your patients kind of a daze. we advise that you take extra caution, as you go out and about to travel, if you are going at that point in the day especially but this is an all day event. here's where we stand now, 48 at the airport. it is way too warm for anything but plane old rain
5:33 am
but there is colder air in the wings back through state college and pittsburgh as that cold air arrives and as this intensifying storm generates its very own cold air, those temperatures will continue their decline. so, these are your midday temperatures, basically here, 40 degrees a at best in philadelphia. that will be marginal enough that we will start to see the snow changing in or the rain changing over to snow, and we're generally looking at a slushy 2 inches around the the city of philadelphia higher totals though especially as you go into the least high valley and pocono region. we will have much more on how much you can expect, in these locations in my next hit. stay tune for. that meanwhile of course with the snow on the way, it is a great time to make sure your cbs-3 weather app is on your smart phone. get your up to date forecast, and of course send us your storm pictures. down load at seven a on itunes and google play. and it is free. >> that is beg using waste to me, free, i love free. good morning, everyone. traveling on our majors you

will be free and clear. so far. we are still waiting on than that big time rush and we are still waiting on that big time weather that we're expecting, traveling on i-95, this is a look right around with the man avenue. southbound commuting is where you see those taillights. notice here it is not awful but with these headlights in the northbound side picking up it would be a little bit of the glare off the the road. it is slick out there just take it easy. as we continue to move towards ben franklin bridge the bend been is slick with all of our bridges. keep that in mine. westbound and eastbound no major delays just yet and heading in to pennsylvania and new jersey and really traveling all over in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware, speed sensors are still high up in the 50's, where we're now seeing that drop to 54 on i-95. it is still not awful. we have an accident situation, compromising two right lanes on the eastbound side of the pennsylvania turnpike at fort washington. so if you are traveling in that area, be mindful of it. it is an overturn tractor trail their ended up into a

ditch. it has been out there keep that in mine. also later on tonight after the rush, that is when you'll see closures for kelly drive and ben franklin parkway. i believe we have mine are delays at the airport so just definitely call ahead, ukee. and if you are getting out of town some winter weather could put a king in your travel plans. a all of those flakes are in the flying yet. preparation toss get you where you need to go are ramping up. "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabao joins us from philly international with the store friday there. jan? >> reporter: ukee, good morning. it is already busy here at philadelphia international airport. check out that line waiting to go through security. mighty long. but i think a lot of these people are happy they will get on their flight and heading out of town before that weather moves in. lot a the tea part tour board. this is what travelers want to see. they all say on time. big question this morning is how long will this last with the rain and snow and win moving into our area of course, day before
5:36 am
thanksgiving is all ready one of the busiest travel days of the year but then you add in some bad wet tore that holiday travel and we have recipe for major delays. here at philly international airport the snow crews are standing by. over at 30th street station trains are rolling and many will rely on the rails this holiday. around 80,000 people are expect to come through philadelphia alone. amtrak has added 72 trains this holiday but most of the prime time tickets in the northeast corridor are already taken but we're told you should still call to check the availability because people cancel at last minute. meantime back here at the airport snow crews are standing by, the temperature on the ground will play a difference as far as snow sticking and resulting delays. still airlines are planning ahead and offering options for travelers. they are allowing to you change flights, change times, with no fees. we have talk about the air, we have talked about the rail, back out here live out here right now we will talk about the roads. i want to bring in triple a spokesperson jim with the mid-atlantic region of our
5:37 am
area. what are the roads looking like and volume looking like this holiday season. >> well, it is difficult to tell with the storm coming in but volume we anticipate to be levels we have not seen since 2007. so 4 percent increase in road travelers this thanksgiving. >> what do you think that is caused by. >> one of the big things is lower gas prices. that has help improve consumer confidence plus savings. year to year difference are about 45 to 50 cents different when you fill up per gallon in delaware, new jersey, and the philadelphia five county region. >> reporter: you were mentioning that 580,000 travelers are hitting the reds this thanksgiving. >> we anticipate nine out of ten people are doing so by the road. so it will be tricky to see how things develop later this morning and into the evening hours, what that will do on the roads. people need to remember to be safe, patient behind the wheel. >> reporter: always good advice harder to do outside on the roads. what is some add rise for people who are getting outside
5:38 am
on the roads, are there better times than others to think about traveling. >> typically we will look at this holiday wednesday afternoons are the big getaway day and people returning on sunday afternoon. the thing to remember with this storm people have the opportunity to leave maybe tuesday night, leave early, or delay travel until thursday when they think storm has passed. it will be touch and go i think this afternoon on what that traffic will look like. >> sunday is big travel day to come back. do you want to push that off if you can or come back earlier. >> no, looking at the weather it should be clear coming back but i think if you have the opportunity, you have flexibility in your schedule you want to travel at off peak hours. that might mean coming back on a saturday if you can. >> all right jim triple a spokesperson, for mid-atlantic region thanks for joining us on our show. as we are here at the airport check ahead for your flight status to make sure everything is on time. that is very easy to do. just dial 800-phl gate. reporting live from philadelphia international

airport this morning jan carabao for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". penndot crews started work to prepare for today's snow fall but they urge drivers to use extra caution on the roads today. "eyewitness news" reporter nicole brewer joins us from norristown where penndot work are have been busy getting ready for the snow, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning erika. penndot put salt on the roads, mother nature is pouring salt in the wound, considering a first winter storm is coming on one of the busiest travel days of the year. we will hear that a lot today. but before we getting and get on the roads, just consider penndot's plan of action and where their vehicles will be as we move throughout this very busy travel day. in montgomery, chester and bucks counties, crews will be out by midnight. they're already out in full force with trucks, in philadelphia and delaware counties, again in full force by morning. so very, very soon. the as katie has been mentioning heavier snowfall is expect to happen in the afternoon so that is, of
5:40 am
course, when most of penndot's trucks will be outside on the roads, in all, we are looking at 444 vehicles, so lots and lots of trucks are ready to take on wednesday's winter storm event, however it may fall. while rain and two worm days will certainly help, penndot is urging motorist to take precautions. >> we're asking people to either adjust or delay their travel plans, if possible, it is a very good idea, you know, look at the weather, you might want to delay your plans until the storm has passed. >> in addition to adjusting travel times and even delaying them, penndot also asks thaw decrease your speed, that is a given. also increase distance between vehicles especially those plows. you will want to have six car lengths between you and those penndot trucks. give them plenty of room to do their jobs. they will be busy today. we are live from norristown,

5:42 am
>> lets get to protest that turn violence for a second night in a row in oakland, california. take a look at video here. you can see the flames. office's rested several demonstrators lit fires in dumpsters. the protesters are part of the larger group across the country that decided to take on the streets after grand jury's decision in ferguson missouri. stay with "eyewitness news" for continuing coverage of the ferguson grand jury decision and the response to it. you can find more information on our web site just go to cbs philly.com, ukee. today is your lucky day. we are giving away hundred dollars in just a few in minutes and you cannot win if you don't watch. we are also continuing to keep an eye on the storm, cbs-3 mobile weather lobbies southbound i-95 in the first state of delaware we will see what the conditions are like if you are heading out this morning. also the eagles aren't the only team in town tearing through the competition meet little eagles who have their eyes onset on a national title. we will tell but the one obstacle they still have to
5:45 am
willow grove, pennsylvania where barbara lane sent in 45 degrees. it is raining lightly for her in that lex, generally that is what we're finding. i wanting to to marty, also 45 degrees in chalfont. but at the moment he has overcast skies. so this is a iron we're still seeing moisture lift in from south to north. eventually it will get to you, marty, don't worry, just a matter of time. let get further south and gonadal who sent in 44 degrees temperatures. over the last nine minutes. he has steady rain in newark, delaware and wind gusts not too bad up to 8 miles an her but that too will change, with time. this is ane loving system. so win kicks in. change over gets underway and we will end up with a whole days worth of some stormy weather. lets get next out to storm scan three and show you what is going on right now and what we can expect. moisture still working its way up. what you see on the radar isn't necessarily verifying at the ground. some of you are reporting from
5:46 am
the eyewitness weather watcher network that we are not seeing other than clouds. just a a matter of time. all moving in as we speak. we have a licensing way to go. all of this moisture has to move on through than get out of here before we are done with the storm. you will notice through appalachians the changeover is now beginning where we are seeing the colder air wrapping in. that will be critical here but you that cold air should start to wrap in later on this morning. as we are's on the air on our sister station cw philly we will see change overtake place. notice what our future map is showing, bull's eye of the snow totals for our area in the poconos, lehigh rally, we are expecting six to 8 inches or more. in philadelphia it within more of a slushy, 2 inches or so, i do want to are quickly give you a sense of what is down the road. we have to get through today. today is the big story. thanksgiving, black friday, whole weekend looking good for turkey eating, shopping plans, everything else you have going
5:47 am
on. next shot for a shower would come on machine. lets continue our team three weather coverage with meteorologist carol erickson once again with the the cbs-3 mobil weather lab, hi carol. >> we are seeing rain this rain pick up and a it is, and we are fining temperatures dropping. we're on 95 south heading down and through the wilmington area. the temperatures a little while ago, it was 50 degrees when we were at 30th street station an hour ago. we have lost 9 degrees here in the mobile weather lab down to 41 degrees. that is obviously the trend for the day. as those temperatures drop we will find precipitation changing forms as well. so it is rain now and you can see the spray kicking up but still it is passable and it is just a rainy start to the day. 's these temperatures come down we will watch for the big change over. all of the dots, penndot, dell dot, new jersey dot, they have plenty of salt. they have not used much of it
5:48 am
if any of it so far, so they will get a chance to do that moving through the rest of the day. i want to talk to you about the concerns that people have have if they are heading out, this is the time to get out because we're finding, from rain, changing over to wet snow and definitely as you go to the west you'll find that change over first as temperatures are lower there but that change over can get even through some of our new jersey suburbs. so just watch for that increasingly throughout the day. probably the biggest change over point is this heavily traveled i-95 corridor on what everybody has been saying all morning one of the busiest travel days of the year. reduced visibility can be expect. watch for those road signs. they will start to get covered. as you head to the north as you move toward northwestern, new jersey and up through new york and through new england heading in that direction and also, as you head to the south through west virginia as we look for that colder
5:49 am
temperatures there reduced visibility, slow travel, slushy roads. lets give you another shot out the window, vittoria as we look at the very wet roadways, as we are moving our way down through new castle county delaware. it is a wednesday morning. we are moving around through here and then heading backup in the other direction to take a look to see what is happening in the key spots this morning and of course that would include the the philadelphia airport. we have already seen that it is very busy there. we will check on any flight delays and that sort of thing coming up, but for now that is how it is on i-95 heading south, vittoria. >> thanks very much. i a appreciate that last shot you have shown because i do want anyone watching right now do not under estimate the weather. even fit is i light and we're waiting for that heaviness to follow through. because, still, even fit is raining outside roads get slick and incidents happened, it is more incident prone situation, take it easy out there. taking a look at 42 freeway if you are heading in the north
5:50 am
bound direction we are building up that rush hour traffic. same thing goes traveling on i-95 moving into pennsylvania, commuting in southbound direction i-95 right around girard avenue where we are used to seeing that delay start to form. that is exactly what we're encountering right now. speed sensors are dropping if you are traveling i-95 southbound. it didn't seem like it is indicated that well but it is, more so, this speed sensors within the northeast the delays are south, further south at that pint down to girard. fifty-four on the schuylkill. fifty-five traveling on 476. we have a vehicle fire on 295 southbound at 206. now lets head back to the desk. >> thanks, vittoria. we want to make your holiday happier. >> lets do it. we are giving a away hundred dollars. today is your last day to win so keep watching for the final word of the day, first though here's what is coming up tonight during evening prime time viewing right here on cbs-3.
5:53 am

5:55 am
the as we approach 6:00 o'clock, 422 still moving fairly well, but traveling on i-95 we are seeing a dip southbound at girard. fifty-two traveling on the schuylkill, 55 on 476 but things will change stay with us on cbs-3 "eyewitness news" we will be right back. my grandkids bought this nest learning thermostat. programs itself... connects to their precious phones. i don't like it. being cold builds character. walking back and forth to the thermostat builds leg muscles. when the internets come to life and all these gizmos turn on us, these kids won't be able to run away on those shriveled little calves. will they love their nest thermostat then? i don't think so.
