>> reporter: this morning "eye opener" presented by toyota. let's go places. welcome to "cbs this morning." norah o'donnell is off so jeff glor is with us. that city saw another round of violence overnight. it is in response to the decision not to charge officer darren wilson in michael brown's death. >> we'll hear from the brown family in just a moment. but first vladimir duthiers where a number of troops tripled overnight. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the national guard troops deployed here in ferguson to make for a much calmer night. but despite that, they managed to set another police cruiser on fire and to damage this building here behind me. now, the city's mayor criticized the deployment of the national guard troops which happened preem tifbly dur a state of

emergency saying they were too late to head off thing ates of immediate violence. tuesday night vandals threw an object into this auto parts store and smashed out the windows. members of the missouri national guard were brought in to keep order. their presence ramped up in order to prevent property destruction but it happened right in front of our cameras. a loan police c a lone police car in the middle of the street. they tipped it over and set it on fire. the flames were kicked off by molotov cocktails. at times protesters and police stood face-to-face. during that heated exchange police were hit by an object. in turn they doused the crowd with pepper spray. despite months of preparation, governor jay nixon deployed

troops. >> all together that will be more than 2,000 national guardsmen in the missouri region. >> reporter: with more than 700 troops in nearly 100 locations across the region. >> we reached out through unified command and political channels to make it known we need more assets immediately. >> reporter: but the mayor said he never heard back. captain ron johnson with the missouri state highway patrol told us the actions of some have been counterproductive. you wake up this morning and what has changed? what has changed is a community is ruined. >> reporter: now attorney general eric holder has asked for a review to the police response on violence monday night.

jeff? >> thanks a lot. protesters in new york city created gridlock. they blocked the lincoln tunnel and the bridge. a second protest in times square stopped traffic. police arrested those who would not clear roads. in minneapolis a driver plowed through a group of protesters. they started pounding on the car as it drove through. one woman was dragged and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the driver was question and released. demonstrators walked onto the 110 freeway and in oakland they set fire to dumpsters in the streets. >> reporter: police officer darren wilson said he feared for his life. he said he was just doing his job when he shot michael brown.

mark strassmann is in ferguson. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. until this interview, the only people who heard the officer's version of events were the investigators and 12 members of the grand jury. he said he did what he had to do and has a clear conscience. >> i just felt the immense power that he had. the way i've described it, it was like a 5-year-old holding onto hulk hogan. that's how big the officer was. >> reporter: he said it was kill or be killed on august 18th when he killed michael brown. >> at the time i gave myself another legal check. can i shoot this guy. the answer was i have to. if i don't, he's getting too close to me and he's not stopping. he gets about 8 to 10 feet and leans forward like he's about to tackle me. i looked down the barrel of my gun toward his head and that's where it went. >> reporter: brown's family was

devastated by the news. his stepfather had this reaction. within hours monday night ferguson was burning. representatives for it called it completely inappropriate and a case of raw emotion. >> if they present evidence to indict, there would have been an indictment. >> reporter: on tuesday brown family supporters called into question the grand jury investigation in which several witnessed had kts of the brown shooting, a number toll bring the case to a trial. >> the use of grand jury is to find out if there's probable cause to go to trial. you do not have a grand jury to decide on the guilt or innocence of the accused.

>> reporter: officer wilson said he chased brown that day because it was his job to chase brown that day and there's nothing he could have done to prevent his death. a federal civil rights violation investigation is still ongoing. charlie? those thanks. we now want to hear from michael brown's parents along with their attorney. welcome this morning. we thank you for coming and our condolences again. >> thank you. >> for the loss. all that's taken place, what do you hope happens now? what do you want to see happen now? >> change. that's all we're asking for. we acknowledge that our son is gone, we're dealing with it, but there are other families that went through the same situation, and we all just want change all over. >> you know, the officer has spoken now for the first time

and he's giving his version and i'd like to know your reaction. he said your son threw the first punch. your son did not have his arms up. that your son was approaching him and he was in fear of his life. lesl leslie, what are you saying that thi officer said today? >> i don't believe a wit of it. he would never do anything like that. he would never provoke anyone to do anything to him and he wouldn't do anything to anybody. i don't believe any of it. >> let's talk about the violence taking place in the streets, nationwide protests. in the zbrining you called for peace, you called for calm. what are you thinking when you called for peace and in some cases it's gotten out of hand? >> it makes since. put it out there. from day one, which was august 9th --

us. that's not what happens. he gives his statement -- he watched everything. >> i hear you. >> and they don't cross-examinen them. >> he was known for -- all his reports. he's known for that. he's known for that. >> my point is to have a history of violence. one image does not paint a person's entire life or the entire ones. we all have a pachlt and nixon is one of the ones that came to me and let me know it shouldn't be part of this procedure because when he was 18, he did things and if people had of noerngs he wouldn't be governor. if something happened in that store and that's a big "if," that could have been dealt with, but he didn't. he did what he wanted to do. >> you think he wanted to kill your son. >> i don't think he wanted to

"wall street journal" says apple hit a major milestone yesterday when it topped $700 billion, that's with a "b," in value. they unveiled iphones with the larger screens. on tuesday they closed at $117.60. that's up from $97.99.

that's when the iphone 6 was launched. the "los angeles times" looks at the unrest in ferguson. they look at what it calls rights of uses in the u.s. they say racial discrimination and that are major challenges. president obama is acknowledging the need to improve race relations in the united states. during an immigration speech in chicago tuesday the president outlined steps he will take in response to michael brown's death. >> to those who think that what happened in ferguson is an excuse for violence, i do not have any sympathy for that. i have no sympathy at all for destroying your own communities. but for the overwhelm majority of people who just feel frustrated and pained because they get a sense that maybe some communities aren't treated fairly or some individuals aren't seen as worthy as others,

jewelry thieves are in custody after a dramatic heist where they exchanged gunfire with police. the gunmen fled on a scooter after allegedly robbing a cartier store. it happened in a popular shopping district. the suspects ended up as a hair salon where they took a hostage. they surrendered after a tense two-hour standoff. nobody was hurt and the stolen jewels were recovered. stores are gearing up this morning. the national retail federation says more than 140 million of us will spend money at brick and mortar stores and online, but despite those big data breaches over the past year, less than 20% of the shoppers say they will let the cyber attacks influence their plans. they're still shopping. we're joined once again by tim. always good to have you. >> thanks for having me. >> online seemed to be okay. does it mean that online is

safer? >> there are certainly risks to both but there are measures you can take. when you walk into a store, you're kind of handing control over to the stores. i feel more control online. >> what do you do if your data has been stolen? >> it's very difficult. obviously if it's your credit card, you get a new credit card number. but if it's your social security number, you have to go to lifelock. you need to look at ongoing protection. you need to look at your credit report and make sure somebody isn't stealing your identity and doing things with it they shouldn't be. >> what do we do if we're shopping instore or online. >> if you're shopping online, make sure your browser is updated. make sure you're shopping on sites that have ssl encryption.

if you see a green lockup in the address bar, that's a good thing. >> the ceo of target is on deck. they were the subject of a big data breach last year. do you think they're doing enough to be safe? >> they're doing a lot of things. they're not telling us everything because they want to keep some things safe and quiet. they're simplifying the networks. the breaches were really thanks to third-party vendors. target and home depot are look, simply fig things, making it harder to keep things more secure. >> the question is how long that takes before all that changes. >> it takes a long time. we're seeing a lot of other major changes, for example, switching from traditional cards. we're finally seeing in the u.s. that will help to make things more secure. we'll see things roll out widely
