stray flurry this afternoon the story sat cold. going to be a very cold night and a cold black friday as well unfortunately. let's take look what's happening outside. take you out to storm scan3. you can see snow showers really across western pennsylvania up into portions of new york state into connecticut, and massachusetts as well. we are seeing the threat for a couple of snow showers through the rest of this evening most of them stay west of us. even the rain shower here or there. most of it misses us don't be surprised if you need to flick the windshield wipers once or twice. take a look at these temperatures though. 39 degrees at the airport. it's even colder in areas that have snow cover. like allentown, got almost 5-inches of snow yesterday. it's 35. reading at 36 degrees and winds are still brisk winds about 10 miles an hour out of the northwest and you feel it when you're outside as i am right n now. your evening planner if you'll be out and about after thanksgiving i know a lot of families like to see movies or get early black friday bargains look at these temperatures. in the mid 30s and dropping quickly as the skies clear tonight. so you definitely want the coat, want the gloves, you want the

scarf he is special physical you're heading to maybe an outdoor shopping center coming up i'll have better news for the weekend as we start to warm things back up every day and no more snow to talk about but maybe some rain next week. jessica, back inside to you. >> kate, thanks so much. thanksgiving in philadelphia comes with a lot of tradition. family, friends, food, football an whole lot more. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch is live at christmas village in center city tonight. justin? >> reporter: jessica, if you're not out shopping by this point perhaps you're having your thanksgiving dinner or are going in for seconds but as you mentioned throughout the day, long before the family friends and food, we saw a lot of people in center city indulging in a few other philly thanksgiving traditions. ♪ >> brisk winds and blue skies a parade perfect back drop for which this crowd was grateful but a bit chilly. >> how are you feeling right n now? >> kind of cold. >> reporter: but excited because santa is on his way. i'm sure. we can see him down the street. >> as usual santa and mrs. claus

help close the thanksgiving day parade for a knifeth year they wowed the crowds of thousands along the ben franklin parkway. of course, there were high flying balloons including dr. seuss' horton, high school marching bands and a former boys banter. in sync's lance bass who didn't meet a beat taking photos with fans. ♪ >> something special, unique, little shop that is come from all over the world. >> over in center city, christmas village is back. welcoming shoppers to its areas and for some setting the tone for the season. >> i think just all of the lights being off and just walking around the village it puts in you the christmas mood. it gives you that spirit you just want to go out and bet presents and you're just so excited for christmas eve. >> or maybe football of course the pros play on thanksgiving but our high school teams took the field, too. the george washington high eagles took on the archbishop ryan raiders in what was a down and dirty turkey day tumble. and i am not allowed to tell

you who won that game. the answer is coming up in sports later on with lesley. as for christmas village take a look around here. you can see some shops are open. some are opening, but the village will be open from now until december 28th. we are live in center city, jut justin finch cbs-3 eyewitness news. >> great place for holiday cheer. justin thanks so much. thanksgiving is also a day of veracity and giving throughout the area. in camden county free meals were served at the lindenwold senior citizen community center a joint effort by several organizations including the sorority delta sigma fate at a and new jersey garden city alumni chapter. in pitman, gloucester county hundreds of volunteers got up early to make sure those in need in the area had something special on this thanksgiving d day. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco has their story. >> there's people in need that can really use our help. >> dozens of volunteers got up early thanksgiving morning and packed their car with 3,000 meals could be delivered all

over south jersey. >> it's been very hard. i work at the food pantry, and a lot of people come in with, you know, with no food. >> as charities showed up volunteers formed a conveyor belt packing cars, vans and trucks full of thanksgiving dinner in the hundreds. going to the homeless, elderly and families who would otherwise go without. >> we've been here for a few years now. we really enjoy it. >> it is pumpkin pies, bread, turkey, stuffing and vegetables. >> cooking began yesterday with 71 turkeys weighing more than 1200 pounds. 3,000 slices of pie and lots of stuffing. >> we're still cooking more over here. we're actually almost ran out of turkey. >> reporter: after all the meals were handed out sit down dinner for 300 veterans and their families and they say every year the need is growing. >> it's a lot worse that i can see in a long time.

venice italian eatery says no matter what the need he'll find way because he personally knows the pain of being hungry. >> i grew up. i was let's say poor, you know, i didn't have hot water until i was 13. i had some ham and cheese sandwiches for thanksgiving. >> he started thanksgiving din are in at his restaurant six years ago. >> it's almost priceless. people cry on the phone and thank you so much. they are grateful. >> reporter: every year they're feeding more and attracting more volunteers. >> the girls will come back next year to help. >> reporter: in pitman, new jersey, i'm diana rocco cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> head to go south philadelphia's cash's bakery is a thanksgiving tradition for a lot of people out there. but customers show up for more than just roles and desserts. for sever six decades dozen of people have dropped off turkeys at the bakery to let them handle the cooking. the bakery fires up their heavy brick oven to roast the bird just right for friends old and

new. >> i see the same, arc lot of the same faces every year and, you know, some new ones that go with it, but, yeah, like people trust us with their thanksgivi thanksgiving. >> the bakery cooked about 129 turkeys today. all of them finished by 1:00 this afternoon. a growing tradition on thanksgiving night now is to rush to the mall to get a jump on those black friday deals and some retailers hoping to get a leg up on their competitors were open for business before the sun came up today. "eyewitness news" reporter david is live at the cherry hill mall with more. david? >> reporter: jessica, seems like these malls open earl earlier and earlier every year. this mall behind me cherry hill mall opening at 6:00 o'clock staying open all night until 10:00 o'clock tomorrow night. that is a long time. right now not many customers here but a lot of workers getting ready to go in work a 12-hour shift until a little bit after 5:00 o'clock in the morning. but as you mentioned there are some stores that opened up even earlier today. 1k mart to name just one.

we wept to the k mart on roosevelt in northeast philadelphia today. that opened very early on thanksgiving. people heading out to get those holiday deals before they even sat down to enjoy their turkey. we caught up with shoppers early this morning. >> and so what brought you out today thanksgiving? >> a couple sales here that they have going on. i have for my grand babies. >> overall you think this is worth it for you? >> i think so. yes, it is. otherwise i wouldn't be out. >> reporter: all right. k mart is one of the stores open. let's go through right now and show you some of the other stores. toys r us opened at 5:00 o'clock just opened, dick's sporting goods 5:00 p.m. j.c. penney 5:00 p.m. macies toes 6:00 p.m. and target 6:00 p.m. there are some stores not open on thanksgiving costco, bj wholesale, home depot and nordstrom. several malls opened besides cherry hill in our area all our viewers go to cbsphilly.com to see which ones are open but we're expecting this one to be busy one after 6:00 o'clock.

again, 6:00 p.m. tonight until 10:00 p.m. tomorrow night. not closing once. jessica? >> i think you'll start to see a few people very very soon, dav david. thanks so much. >> more than a week after a four alarm fire destroyed a building at the columbus farmers market it's indoor stores are open for business. the outdoor flea market opened for business last week just two days after that fire. market representatives tell us customers piled in today like they normal dollar on thanksgiving. >> families get up early put their turkeys in the oven. they come out here to shop and they've been doing it for decades and we're very very pleased that today is a good market day out there. we have no snow. we have lots of vendors. we have lots of shoppers. and we have the inside stores back open. >> and the vendors tell us there's hoping to see a big crowd this holiday weekend. philadelphia's taney dragons are back in the spotlight. mo'ne davis and the gang helped celebrate thanksgiving with the crowds in new york city today. that's coming up on cbs-3 "eyewitness news".

macy's thanksgiving day parade. that team may have lost the little league world series but they certainly won the hearts of the nation. sports illustrated cover girl mow day davis and the team were all smiles as they waived to the crowd there. cbs news correspondent don champion tells us what makes this parade so special. >> reporter: crowds cheered in excitement as new york's annual thanksgiving day parade. >> it's so much fun. i love it. >> so much energy. >> i love this parade. it's like a tradition so we come here every year. >> reporter: thomas the tank engine made his debut. it was one of six new giant balloons this year along with pick today chew, paddington bear, red power ranger, pillsbury dough and sky landers erupt. a dozen marching bands made their way down the parade route as did 1,000 clowns. among them, pat bare her 29th year taking part in this time it was a family affair. she brought her son. >> what keeps you coming back

all these years. >> how can you not? how can you not? get up early and you see everything that's going on here. people giving their time, their talents. it's beautiful. >> reporter: temperatures were in the 30s for the start of the parade and skies were overcast, but that did not seem to bother the more than thee .5 million spectators who have been out here for hours. it's a little cold but once you get out here, get into everything, nice and warme warm. >> reporter: as snow started to fall santa claus made his annual appearance a reminder that christmas is just a few weeks away. don champion cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> a christmas mad that was ugl- the small branches will be decorated with a single red bulb just like the scrawny tree in the beloved peanuts holiday tail. officials say they open this symbol will remind people of the deeper meaning of the season. >> how about celebrating thanksgiving in the dark? still ahead on "eyewitness news" the

>> we saw heavy know yesterday but for the most part the lights stayed on in our area, but that's snowstorm we had forked hundreds of thousands of people in new england to celebrate thanksgiving in the dark. more than 200,000 customers are without power in new hampshire and more than 100,000 are without power in maine and get this, there's no estimate on when power will be restored in either place. we're thinking about them tonight. that certainly gives you something to be thankful for. sometimes the things you don't even think about that we take for grand the power the oven will work to cook the turkey. >> exactly. prone month power outages new jersey of our area i tweeted the other day praying i don't have to cook my turkey on generator power. i'm thankful for that. my turkey got cooked with regular power those poor people dealing with no electricity on thanksgiving. >> i know. no fun and also we were saying kate and i both thankful we had stretchy clothing today after our turkeys. yes. >> i dug out this old dress that i wore when i was pregnant with my second baby. so lots of room. >> you look fabulous.

thank you. got all the thankful tweets going across the bottom of the screen. we love hearing from all of you. if you have some you'd love to send us use hashtag cbs-3 and we would love to hear from you. we love to see the photos. >> coming up we'll show a bunch of photos on the touch screen. >> looking forward to that. it was a great thanksgiving day. at leave the storm wasn't today and we got to get out to our friends and family's house and no problems on the roads. let's take a look what's happening outside right now. beautiful sunset as we look live from campbell's field over the ben franklin bridge and you can see the skies have cleared up pretty nicely. we had some clouds earlier the sun tried to peek out here and there and temperature got just warm enough that some of that snow in the north and west suburbs was melting. areas that didn't get much snow like down the shore all lit up on this holiday. you can see in ocean city on the boardwalk the ferris wheel all lit up i don't know if it's running right now it was a minute ago. some people spending their thanksgiving down the shore. the boardwalk pretty quiet but all lit up. you want to take a walk along the boards it's there for you. let's take look at storm scan3.

can't rule out a stray flurry through the remainder of tonight most of those coming down from the north and west. a little upper level energy rotating through it's not a big deal but did see some snow showers this morning north of the city. we also saw some up in new york city for the macy's parade up there. now, we're seeing things start to lighten up and most of this should stay off to our west through the night we have a chance of a stray shower or flurry getting in. you can see some indication that a few raindrops actually might be falling right now in new castle county delaware. if you're seeing that tweet me and i'll let the world know that you clued us in on what's happening right outside right now. 39 right now at the airport. it's 38 in wilmington. 36 degrees in reading and 35 in allentown. cold in mount pocono at 27 degrees. and it's going to be a cold overnight so any spot that got snow to the north and west especially that melting snow that we had today, there's a puddle out there i know it was dripping from my gutters all day puddle on the walkway could freeze up tonight. watch your tepp tonight into tomorrow. temperatures don't get past the up 30 that is cold day for black

friday shoppers in open outlet malls. bundle up much saturday a little bit better as we're back to the low 40s the good news we're dry with sunshine right through the rest of the holiday weekend. here's your shopping forecast. 8am31 degrees. by 11 a.m. at least above freezing but doesn't look like we'll even break in the 40s tomorrow. the warmest temperatures in the mid afternoon hours when we climb to the upper that's righ rights. during the overnight hours down into the 20s. 29 in the city. winds out of the northwest at five to 10. for your friday sunny and brisk, cold for shoppers. 39 degrees. so actually not a bad day to spend it indoors maybe doing some early christmas shopping. your "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast does warm things up a little bit. 30s, 40, 50s i like that trend. sunday 53 partly sunny. monday almost 60. watch for a shower by evening and then tuesday is colder with warm it up again wednesday with a chance for rain and then colder again with sunshine thursday. next week kind of a trade off mild and wet or cold and bright. but it look like no snow in the forecast through next week so that is some good news.

>> the eagles taking on the cowboys in dallas as we speak. a lot of on the line the winner takes over first place in the nfc east. quarterback mark sanchez leading the birds down the field and into the end zone himself right now the eagles up 17-seven in the second quarter. to the early game we had the bears hosting the lions today chicago getting that early lead up 14-three after the first quarter but the lions able to rally in the second scoring three unanswered touchdowns. they tack on another 10 in the next half. quarterback matthew stafford throwing for 390 yards and two touchdowns today they win it 3 34-17. all right. checking on high school football now lots of games played today

>> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> i'm jessica dean. here are some of the days top stories on this thanksgiving d day. a big crowd gathered for the philadelphia thanksgiving day parade. the oldest in the country. it's tradition for families together and watch the festivities before they go to the table. >> and many are spending thanksgiving today giving back in pitman new jersey. dozen of volunteers delivered 3,000 hot meals to the homeless elderly and other families who would otherwise go without a meal on thanksgiving. and keeping with recent traditions, many people have already eaten their thanksgiving dinner and now they're focusing on the shopping. a number of stores have just opened or will open in a matter of minutes. marathon shopping hours straight through until tomorrow night.

herself. jeannine will he page, 11 yeared alex, eight-year-old nadia and 1484 old nicholas found shot all in the same bed. these eyes saw it happen. >> what a horrible thing for this dog to lose his three best friends. and then of course my thought went to i guess i'm glad she spared him. >> reporter: bum bells had been taken to shelter until sue from the burlington county animal alliance checked in. >> if this guy has any inkling to what happened and we don't sure for sure but if he does he has to be very very stressed. >> bum bells was taken out of the shelter and into a foster home. >> it was so traumatic losing his family and then to be in a shelter where you're in a cage on the concrete floor. alone. he didn't do anything to deserve that. need to be in a home where people could pet him and care for him and help him to heal. >> reporter: it didn't take long for many folks to reach out to the burlington county animal alliance asking to adopt bumbl bumbles. >> everybody wants to help. there's a lot of really good

people out there. >> reporter: including the heinz family. >> we're a small community we all just wish we would have known we could have done something and prevented the tragedy. >> when the organization found out that patrick already knew the dog, they decided it would be best for bumble toss live with him. >> really loveable dog. he just wants to be loved, too. >> he will be just with a new family. syma choudhry for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> the family of a 12-year-old boy fatally wounded by cleveland police says if the officer had noted so quick until boy would still be alive. surveillance video released by city officials wednesday shows the boy with a toy gun that lack the orange safety indicator. officers in patrol karr car shot the boy within 1.5 to two seconds of arriving and that shooting is now under investigation. >> the streets of ferguson are quiet today after three days of protests that turned violent. some artists and children pain painted plywood on storefront wip dose. others helped businesses clean

up. a dozen commercial buildings burned earlier this week after a grand jury decided not to indict officer darren wilson in the shooting death of michael brown. the taliban has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack in afghanistan's capital today that killed five people. a bomber blue up a vehicle at the british embassy. this as thousands of u.s. soldiers remain in afghanistan this thanksgiving. alfonso vonmarsh has the story. >> reporter: u.s. troops serving away from home in afghanistan are getting a taste of home cooking this thanksgiving. >> there you go. happy thanksgiving. >> reporter: us military flew in nearly 30,000 pounds of turkey, 6,000 pies and 840 gallons of eggnog to american forces in kabul around the country. >> i don't know what that is but it looks good. happen thanksgiving! >> reporter: there are about 24,000us service members still in afghanistan. this is the last thanksgiving celebration before the us and

year more people will be heading online to find the best deals. but as jill wagner explains the deepest discounts can actually be found today. >> reporter: jay is taking her son from new york city to philadelphia for thanksgiving. she'll pack up some toys and her laptop because after the turkey and pumpkin pie she's going shopping. >> i will not be going to any stores for their sales. i'll be shopping and line. that's easier. >> jay won't be alone. experts say the best bargains for the holiday shopping season this year can be found online. on thanksgiving day itself. >> the data indicates that thursday is going to be the lowest priced day of the entire year on average. >> tamara is analyst at adobe systems. they crunch the numbers for online shopping trends and found on thanksgiving retailers will discount items by 24% on avera average. that's a bit better than black

friday when shoppers will see a 23% discount. >> on cyber brrr monday, items will only be slashed by about 20%. there's another reason to shop online thanksgiving day. you'll have a better shot of getting just what you want. >> and by the time we get to cyber monday, there are five times more out of stock situations. >> especially she says for the season's hottest gifts. for adults it's the iphone six and row coo and for kids it's anything related to disney's blockbuster hit frozen. >> there's a frozen coat. mr. if he can for his little cousin. >> that's why this thanksgiving jay says she'll be keeping her lab top close at hand. in new york, jill wagner, cbs news. >> on this cbs-3 health watch tonight, a surge is expected in the number of people getting exams for lung cancer now that they'll be covered by medicare and medicaid. health reporter stephanie stahl has more on what doctors say could save thousands of lives. report. >> take a deep breath.

>> reporter: breathe z easier after surgery for lung cancer she was a life long smoker and thought somehow he'd beat the odds but on a family vacation to disney developed a cough and had been losing weight. his doctor recommended a ct scan which was able to identify a small early stage cancer. >> i was devastated. naturally. you always think it's going to happen to the other person. >> reporter: more people like ron will now be able to have ct scans the center for medicare and medicaid services has decided to cover screenings for former heavy smokers over the age of 55. >> there's an opportunity to really safe lives here. >> reporter: dr. stacey sue is a fox chase surgeon who operates for crozer keystone at delaware county memorial hospital. >> the ct scan is to date a proven and accurate way by which to find lung cancers before they're causing the patients any problems but at a stage when they're potential curable. >> because it's not typically found early, lung cancer is considered especially deadly. there are usually no symptoms.

smokers face a dramatically increased risk of lung cancer and while private insurance pays for ct screenings the government didn't until now an estimated 4 million americans will now be covered. >> i think it's great. i really do. i mean, in my case it was the early detection and early treatment that saved my life. >> reporter: doctors say the downside of ct scans is they could increase the risk of unnecessary biopsies and cause anxiety. only 5% of suspicious spots turn out to be lung cancer. i'm stephanie stahl, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> researchers say an experimental ebola vaccine is showing promise in a trial run at the national institutes of health in maryland. 20 healthy adults produced anti ebola antibodies. researchers say none of the volunteers suffered serious side effects. >> still ahead tonight, food for thought. just how many calories are you consuming today? we probably don't want to think about it but it's probably a lot more than you do think.

well. they licked their plates clean feasting on biscuits, green beans, biscuits, sweet tow pay tow pie. >> here's something to think about as you pile up the food on your plate today or maybe just plug your ears and don't listen because the average thanksgiving meal contains about 4500 calories. that's according to researchers for the calorie control council. the meal itself it's just 3,000 calories but there's another 1500 inn incorporated for snacking and nibble link. there you go. time now to check your philadelphia job market report. here's "eyewitness news" jobs expert steven greenberg. >> a lot to be thankful for when it comes to the economy. growing couldn't zen says about americas to economic resurgence more than 3% growth is widely expected next year. that gives us 13 of reasons to be optimistic about the labor market in pennsylvania. the state's gross domestic product has grown point 7% which should lead to more hiring.

cbsphilly.com/watchers. let's take a look how things are looking outside. start you off with a shot from the cbs-3 sky deck from the rooftop here at the cbs broadcast center out over center city philadelphia and everything bright but you can see traffic is moving fine. we made out with mainly rain in the city with yesterday's storms much that's good news. everything is still pretty quiet out there but even in the city any wet surfaces if there are any puddle left over there could be some freeze up tonight. refreeze especially a concern in the north and west suburbs where some of the snow started to melt today and now everything is going to freeze up again. let's take look at one of our north and west suburbs all the way up in broad head hill 31 degrees it's dark but you can see how much snow is on the ground there. just a blanket of white a lot of folk had a white thanksgiving today but at least the weather was pretty quiet for thanksgiving plans no problems on the roads today everything mainly just wet even last night. storm scan3 shows a few snow showers and even rain snow showers drifting in from the north and west some upper level energy moving on through. not a whole lot coming down in our area we're seeing a few

indications on the radar that something is trying to fall here over portions of northern delaware but as you can see came in on one radar frame and pretty much disappeared i'm in the sure is anything is reaching the ground it may be one of those few swipes of the windshield wipers and you're done kind of situations but if you're seeing anything over portions of new castle county into portions of kent county it will be brief and spotty and that's about it. future weather i'll step out of the way for a second you can see not showing any problems future weather does not expect this to get in here through the rest of this evening even as i said set it into motion. pretty quiet conditions moving through the rest of tonight and really nothing but a flurry or sprinkle even if we do see anything move on in. so everything pretty quiet as we head into our black friday skies are clear. see more clouds start to drift in friday night all in all looking at pretty tranquil conditions. skies clearing means temperatures will start to drop overnight. ing see we're sitting at 35 in allentown. arthritic in reading. 39 degrees at the philadelphia airport and 38 in millville. you'll wake up to some much colder temperatures.

temps in the 20s in some spots as temperatures tomorrow don't make it past the 30s. today we struggled to get to the 40s. toll we won't get there at all. it will be a full day of sunshine but again no better than the upper 30s for your saturday staying chilly but again pretty comfortable. not too bad. no snow at least it's dry, we're back to the low 40s and then 50s by sunday. here's a look at what you'll wake up to temperatures in the 20s across the board as i mentioned if you had maybe snow melting in your gutters and it was dripping on your front walkway, watch out for some slick spots early tomorrow morning. 22 will be the morning low in allentown. 21 mount pocono. and 25 degrees in reading. threw the overnight hours partly cloudy, cold, 29. cold for shoppers tomorrow it's sunny and brisk at 39 degrees. and your "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast, here comes a little bit of moderation. by sunday we're at 53. dry through the rest of the weekend. monday 57 with an evening shower then it's colder tuesday. and we'll have a chance for rain by next wednesday. jessica over to you. >> thanks kate. we all know thanksgiving isn't just about food. we do love the food but there
