this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, december 2nd, 2014. good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. new from overnight. its lappic extremists are suspected of staging a bloody terror attack in northern kenya. at least 46 workers at a quarry near kenya's border with somalia were killed. militants with the terror group al shabaab are expected. and more fallout from the ferguson missouri shooting, proposals from the attorney general to end racial profiling and from the president a task force to study police reform and accountability. meanwhile there have been national walkouts to protest the shooting. susan mcginnis is in washington and has more on the nationwide protests. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie,

people walked out of their jobs and out of high schools and across the country in l.a. and san francisco and elsewhere. meanwhile at the white house spent muff of the day focused on ferguson. >> reporter: hundred us of protesters disrupted holiday shopping at this seattle mall, a week after a missouri grand jury failed to indict former police officer darren wilson in michael brown's death. in atlanta, attorney general eric holder spoke the ebenezer baptist church where martin luther king jr. once spoke. part to improve relations between police and citizens. >> he will remain firmly resolved to stand shoulder to shoulder with you in driving this work into the future. >> reporter: holder was briefly interrupted by demonstrators. >> i ain't mad at you, all right. what we saw there was a genuine expression of concern and involvement. >> reporter: in the next few

days, horde says the justice department will unveil new federal guidelines designed to end racial profiling. as part of the federal reform, the president has requested funds for tens of thousands of body cameras to be worn by police and new training for law enforcement nationwide. >> this is not a problem simply of ferguson, missouri. this is a problem that is national. >> reporter: for now, though, the president's plan does not involve a visit to ferguson. and the president is giving that task force 90 days to submit that nationwide. anne-marie. >> susan mcginnis in washington. this morning, there seems to be disagreement over whether the st. louis rams apologized for the actions of five players concerning the shooting. the players enter sunday's game with their hands raised as a shine of solidarity for protesters. police were outraged.

late yesterday a st. louis police chief said that a rams official called to apologize. but rams said he never apologized. rams coach jeff fisher said he didn't know beforehand what the players had planned. >> they made a choice to exercise their free speech yesterday. i have not spoken to them yet, i will. and those conversations will most likely remain confidential. >> neither the team nor the nfl will discipline the players. this morning, a powerful storm is rolling off the pacific ready to hit california with flood-producing rains. the storm moved in overnight and is expected to reach fulls for later today. up to 5 inches expected in the mountains and 1 to 2 inches in los angeles. there are fears that the rain will trigger more mudslides like the one that closed the

nine-mile stretch of the pacific coast highway sunday. the risk is particularly high in foothills where recent wildfires have burned. rachel kim has that part of the story. >> reporter: lindora resident kevin emerson is building it. >> right up where the fire was, i think the opportunity is there for it to happen. >> reporter: across the street, melanie thomas is stacking sandbags to protect the home she just bought. residents in the foothill communities are bracing for rain-triggered mudslides in glendora. they're left vulnerable by the fire in january. >> i think i'm a little nervous. we're prepared. we've caught the k-rails and we've done everything we can do and hope for the best now. >> reporter: the l.a. county fire department is preparing,

too. >> they're expecting 1 to 3 inches along the coast. >> reporter: they have extra staffing and prepared to respond. >> they can turn on a dime, they're maneuverable and able use for rescues if we have to. >> reporter: also standing by for rescues, the fire department's canines. >> outstanding dogs. they do find people. hair ready to go at a moment's notice. >> reporter: rachel kim, california. today, investigators will try to figure out why a gunman opened fire killing four people. jody lee hunt owned a small towing business. his body was found yesterday in his truck in the woods. he shot himself to death. last month, one victim filed a domestic case against hunt. comedian bill cosby no longer connected to temple university. cosby resigned from the university's board of trustees as his alma mater after 32 years. he said he wanted to do what was

baseball has a season. this is our season. here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. in california, an unusual ends to a police case. officers were trying to catch a suspect on a skateboard for allegedly stealing a car. the suspect switched to running until a driver in a red pickup truck joined the purchase suit. he brought the suspect the escape. and then blocked the suspect from getting away. and police are finally able to catch and arrest him.

another bush is closer to a run for president. former president jeb bush the son and brother of presidents 41 and 43 said last night he is interested. >> so, i'm thinking about running for president, and i'll make up my mind in short order. i don't know if i'd be a good candidate or a bad one. i kind of know how a republican can win, whether it's me or somebody else. and it has to be much more uplifting, much more positive, much more willing to, you know, to be practical now in watching the word lose the primary and win the general, without violating principles. >> meanwhile, republican senator rob portman of ohio said he will not run for president in 2016. instead, he will seek a second term in the senate. a georgia boy is reunited with his mother and is going home after being held captive for four years by his father.

13-year-old gregory jean said that he was kept as a virtual slave. our affiliate wgcl has the story of his remarkable rescue. >> just thank god. >> reporter: the clayton county 13-year-old police say was hidden for four years is going home with his biological mother lisa smith. gregory jean jr. said his stepmother abused him during the entire four years. >> i was just ready to go home. >> reporter: police found gregory this weekend at his biological father's home in jones borough. officers say the couple had him hiding in a fake wall in a storage room when police burst their home. smith said before friday, it had been one year since she talked to her had son and she didn't know his address. the teen had gone to visit his father four years ago and wasn't allowed to go back home. then last friday, she received a friend request from him on

facebook. that's when he gave her his address and told her about the abuse he'd been enduring. smith said he basically used his son as a slave. did all of the yard work. gregory found a phone in the home with no service and used his computer skills to lead police to where he was hidden. >> a downloaded an app that called mama. >> reporter: smith said she had no idea the woman accused of beating her son in 2004 was convicted of cutting her own son with hot scissors. she learned about that watching the news. smith said if she had known about that, she would have tried harder to go home. >> that was wgcl dana wilkerson reporting. the other people in the home

since 2001. the dolphins trailing the jets by a touchdown in the fourth quarter but running back lamar miller scores the only miami touchdown to tie the game. the dolphins would make a late field goal to take the game for good. and the nba season say little more than a month old. and the philadelphia 76ers are still search for the first win. the sixers hosting the defending champion san antonio spurs last night. the spurs playing without star tim duncan and tony parker. philadelphia is now 0-17. one more loss would tie the nba record for the worst start to a season. and finally, look who's back in action. that is tiger woods taking some swings there in florida this week ahead of the event that he hosts. the hero will challenge. injuries kept woods away from the game since august, but he

in the michael brown shooting case, the procedure that failed officer darren wilson was his attempt to call for help. his radio was switched to the wrong channel. bob orr shows us technology that sets in motion help the moment a gun is drawn. >> reporter: computer james wright is a top marksman for the santa cruz deputy's department. with a pistol specially dined with a small tracking lug. it's high-tech backup for aine officer who patrols without a partner. >> i could draw my weapon and fire it and dispatch would be notified that i've done that prior to me updating.

>> reporter: so there is a sense of reassurance in that you know help's on the way? >> yes. >> reporter: santa cruz is one of the departments in the united states testing the technology, the system is simple, using the gun and the officer's smartphone it sends this yellow alert when the officer draws the gun and the red alert when the weapon is fired. jim shire works for the silicon valley tracking the system. >> an officer is not always able to call immediately on the radio. we cut that time to a second. >> reporter:-aff use an air gun to explain the technology. >> this has location, time, number of shots. >> reporter: santa cruz says the system may save lives and it will provide a clear record of what happened in any officer-involved shooting. >> this product will give us the ability to know the exact time
