good morning. i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. the united states will continue conducting raids to save americans held hostage by militants in foreign country, this despite the failed rescue attempt that cost american hostage luke somers his life. it happened in yemen this weekend. al qaeda fight errs killed somers and a south african hostage just as american commandos were attempting to rescue. danielle nottingham has that story. >> u.s. officials say al qaeda link link ed killed luke somers. the u.s. says the operation in southern yemen lasted about 30 minutes and during the mission special forces lost the element of surprise. this video posted on a jihadi website reports to show the fire fight that broke out once navy s.e.a.l.s were spotted.

during the fight the s.e.a.l.s saw a militant run into the building where somers and a south african teacher pierre korkie were being held. when they entered, they found both had been shot. >> it was a very dangerous and complicated mission, but like always in these efforts, there's risk. >> president obama authorized the rescue mission friday, believing somers' life was in eminent danger. thursday al qaeda arabian peninsula posted the video threatening to kill the american. >> i agreed with the president's decision. don't think it was an easy decision. i think it was the right decision to actually engage and try to go in for the rescue attempt. >> the 33-year-old was kipped in 2013. this was the second attempt to rescue somers. in late november navy s.e.a.l.s raided a cave in yemen but he wasn't there. president obama stromtly condemned the killing say those

capitol hill over whether this information needs to be made public. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, lauren. this 480-page report summarizes 6,000 pages of classified documents and u.s. officials have seen the report say that it includes disturbing new information about cia techniques including waterboarding. the big question now is what impact would this information have. cbs news has learned that the senate report concludes that the cia went yomt legal limits when interrogating terror suspects including waterboarding. that it failed in its techniques and they systematically lied to white house and the department of justice and to congress about the effectiveness of the program in order to keep it coming. republican incumbent mike rogers

senator feinstein to delay the release of the report. if it's not leads, it may not see the light of day. >> susan mcginnis in washington. susan, thank you. meanwhile six former guantanamo bay prisoners are beginning new lives in uruguay this morning. all six men were arrested in 2002. they were never charged. had been cleared for release in 2009 on the condition they don't return home but the u.s. struggled to find countries willing to take them. >> even though some of these individuals may not have been inner core al qaeda members, they did have connections to al qaeda affiliates and other networks. all these individuals,'ve finance they're deemed not to be security threats aren't angels and certainly have connections back to certain networks that are of concern.

>> 136 prisoners remain at guantanamo. 67 have been cleared for release or transfer but are in limbo as the obama administration tries to find countries willing to take them. the week begins with treacherous weather for millions of people on the east coast. a nor'easter is targeting the mid-atlantic and northeast today and tuesday. new york and philadelphia could get two to three inches of rain. coast at new jersey could get more than fuehrer. icy road conditions are likely tonight. parts of new england could get up to 14 inches of wet heavy snow. in the philippines at least 21 people are dead after a powerful typhoon hit the country. hagupit continues to pummel the coast. more than a million people fled

don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lauren. they arrived yesterday. while their visit will be a short one, the duke and duchess have packed schedules which even includes a meeting with president obama. a crowd of admirers braved the cold to greet the prince and princess as they arrive at their hotels. >> got to see the tops of their heads. i'm excited. i'm glad we came. >> reporter: this is the royal couple's first official visit of the u.s. and their first ever to new york city. today's itinerary is full. kate joins the mayor's wife to a visit for a center for child development. william heads to washington for a visit with president obama. they'll enjoy a game later an at the barclays center.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch" gas prices drop again and private love letters to marilyn monroe are sold at auction. jill wagner is here in new york with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, lauren. gas prices keep falling. the average price of regular gasoline is down another 12 cents in the past two weeks. the lundberg survey says the nationwide average is now $2.72 a gallon. the price of gas has fallen a dollar since may. it's the lowest price in more than four years. >> here on wall street the dow

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. in sports it's been quite a run for the new england patriots. in san diego last night, after taking a two-point lead tom brady and company put the game away. it gives new england a 23-14 win. the patriots have won eight of their last nine games. they've also clinched their 12th straight end season win.

an american couple is resuming their lives at home after a two-year ordeal. matthew and grace huang and their two adopted sons went to church sunday in california. the huangs were jailed in qatar after being convicted for starving their 8-year-old daughter. margaret brennan spoke with them after they were cleared and arrived in the u.s. >> what was it look after the plane touched down? >> i was excited to be leaving qatar after two very, very difficult years. >> and what was one of the first things you did, grace? >> hunged the boys. i just wanted to see them and hold them and tell them how proud i am of him and how courageous they've been these
