into a fireplace. but they say that is what fire fighters do, and that is what fire fighter, joyce craiglewis loved to do, it was her job, she was doing it in the early morning hours trying to save a life and property when it cost this heroic fire fighter we have life. with lights flashing, a solemn silent procession of fire units and police slowly left einstein medical center. escorting the body of fallen fire fighter joyce craig-lewis, first female to die in the line of duty. >> this brave fire fighter gave her life attempting to save the life of an elderly, frail, woman, this morning. >> reporter: while a seven three-year old resident was safely rescued from this burning west oak lane row home in the basement, the the 11 year veteran was overcome by smoke and flames. commanders who ordered fire fighters to evacuate then realizing, that she was not

with them. >> after the withdrawal they realized fire fighter craig-lewis was missing. they went back into search for her and they were not able to get her out before she passed. >> reporter: neighbors watched as fellow fire fighters raced craig-lou toys a waiting medic unit trying to save her life. >> looked around and saw them running down the the the street. must have been ten or so fire fighters carrying someone. >> reporter: sources tell cbs-3 that the fallen fire fighter accurated her mayday button on her radio sending an instant alert that she was in trouble. officials say they are also now testing a second safety system, which sounds an audible alert to make sure that it too functioned properly. >> it is impossible to say what happened exactly at that moment until there is a a full investigation. >> reporter: it is hoped that an autopsy performed on the fire fighter this afternoon will help provide some

"eyewitness news" reporter justin sanchez is live outside lawncrest firehouse where she was, live with reaction with those who knew her bets, justin. >> reporter: fire fighters at engine 64 are reeling tonight, they called joyce craig-lewis one of their best and as you might imagine her family is saying that there was never a dull moment when she was around. now the the city has joined them all as they mourn. under gray skies and misty rain, black bunting hangs from

engine 64 and 73 and inside 64 above a locker fresh flowers for joyce craig-lewis who was based there. tributes both outside and inside for 11 year veteran who took her last call from engine 73 working an overtime shift but craig-lewis fire fighter family and relatives remember her as doing so much more. >> to know joyce is to love joyce because joyce was happy all the time. there was never a dull moment while joyce was in your presence. >> reporter: hours after her passing craig lewis's aunt and cousin came to the burnout home where she for the her last fire. they found solace knowing joyce was here doing what she loved. >> it was a passion, you know. >> reporter: he always wanted to be a fire fighter. >> yes, 11 years all she talk about was saving others, you you know, she died saving someone. >> reporter: that someone was an elderly woman who lives alone and now in the comfort of her family, something craig-lewis who was a single

independent mall where umbrellas were needed to day but no flooding was reported. we have team three coverage with kathy in the weather center and "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan in atlantic city. kathy, let's begin with you. >> we're seeing the storm move further away, center of the storm just south of long island, pulling slowly away, classic nor'easter. it typically last for more than a few days and it's affects will linger even though most of the we have i rain lifted well to the the north. some spotty showers, some lingering drizzle into the evening but we are still expecting a little bit of flooding to occur. you can see this picture taken from our eyewitness weather watcher drew from sea isle right before sunset. we're still seeing flooding in sea isle city a at this late hour but good news is we're not expecting another high tides like the one we saw earlier today because of the wind. wind shifting more to the north/northwest as our storm pull as away, on the back side of the storm we are getting that colder eras well. we have sustain wind at 20 miles an hour, wind blowing the water out instead of in so

we are not expecting a repeat performance as far as flooding is concern. the rain amounts through delaware and south jersey mainly between two and 3 inches and langhorne, pennsylvania over an inch of rain. temperatures mile. even poconos. it is rain and mist every where but as that cold air moves in tonight, it will change over to snow in the poconos where a winter weather advisory is in effect until tomorrow morning at 6:00 o'clock. this morning light rain and drizzle, gusty kinds and temperatures in the 30's. wind chills will fall in the 20's overnight tonight. that gusty wind will linger and our storm is slow to go, more rain and wet snow showers and then we will get back to normal in the seven day. do you remember what normal is? we will talk more about that later in the broadcast but for now back to you. coastal flooding is causing problems along the jersey shore tonight and we will continue our coverage with a look at conditions in atlantic city. >> reporter: i can certainly testify to everything that kathy was talking about. wind is definitely shifted. it is colder, it is not as strong but we will get strong gusts every once in a while. even though, the signs and frequency of the waves have decreased, this is still a strong storm and one that as officials say not something to take for granted. the power of mother nature, on display along the jersey shore tuesday, waves as tall as school buses pounded inlet section of atlantic city. >> very choppy and rough. >> reporter: this senior trans port broke down after getting stuck in flood waters, low lying areas all throughout the shore experienced low to moderate tidal flooding during morning and early afternoon. >> just a typical nor'easter, we will get this, the wind blows out of the northeast and pushes tides in. >> reporter: some people took their chances despite warnings not to drive through standing water. >> don't take it for granted. if you have to stay in your house and relax for the day and not travel as much.

>> it is now lingering and now the annoying effects. rain came through. storms heading through long island right now heading towards new england but for next couple days we will feel impact of the storm as this is a classic nor'easter. very slow moving system. lets take a a look outside and take you down the the shore where we beared the brunt of the storm in our shore communities. beach erosion, flooding along the bay areas and right now we are waiting for another high tides at 9:00. don't think it will as bad down the show because our wind shifted to the northwest. so everything is blowing out. that is got news. we are still looking at some lingering impact as i mentioned, i want to show you this amazing picture from tim mitchell, an eyewitness weather watcher. he took this from his home in tuckerton, new jersey this afternoon and you can see flooding down the street. mailbox right there, almost covered, at least half will way with the water. the walkways as well a lot of flooding especially as you head toward talk are ton and

ocean county, lot of flooding there as well. as i mentioned the good news our wind shifted and the the rain has relaxed as well. we saw most of the rain to the east of philadelphia, as we expect along those shore communities and of course that helped to add insult to injure with this flooding. the as we look closer you can see in the yellow and where we have orange that is heavier rain and hammington over 2 inches. atlantic city two-point two woodbine 2.28, millville 1.14 and toms river over 2 inches of rain as well. ocean county getting hit hard. as our storm system pull as way we will get colder air on the back side of it and you can see this snowdrifting down, you cane right there route 81, northeast extension, and that would be changing, some of that rain over to snow especially in the poconos. even in the poconos warm enough for rain right now at 36. philadelphia 45. 41 degrees in millville. our future weather shows inching along. by tomorrow on the back side of that seeing a few snow showers even in philadelphia you could see a few snow

jell schlesinger has more. >> reporter: health care industry is exploding, thanks to an aging population. accord together census bureau the population age 65 and older is expect to more than double in the coming decades to 92 million. those 85 and older are project to more than trip toll 18.2 million or 4.3 percent of the population. changing demographics means jam for registered injurieses is on the rise. bureau of labor statistics project a 19 percent growth in employment for registered nursees from 202 through 2022. compared that to an 11 percent average growth rate for all occupations. that growth is already contributing to rising salaries for rn's, the median annual wage for registered nurses across the country is just under $69,000. but in the philadelphia area, that number is $73,220. the numbers show that nurses can do good for others and also for themselves.

heading toward syracuse, new york on the new york state throughway and pulling down cold air very close to the poconos, and there we do expect some accumulating snow a little bit later on tonight. as you can see rain and snow, spotty right now, more nuisance then anything else. rain amounts very impressive in south jersey that is where we saw brunt of the storm nearly 3 inches of rain in brick township, woodbine over two, millsboro2 inches, mount holly 1.36 and norristown on the lighter side in pennsylvania, nearly three-quarters of an inch of rain. all mild. poconos are seeing 35 degrees. thirty-eight in reading. forty-one in wilmington and millville. it is 45 degrees in philadelphia. overnight lows tonight will be down in the 30's. here are the windy talk about on the back side of the storm as it pull as way we will see northwesterly win. that wind becoming northwesterly down the shore sustained at 20 miles an hour and that helps pull water away from the shore, better news for our flooding situation. as the storm moves slowly

toward the north and east we will still have the influence of those wind diving down from the north, influencing our weather, keeping it chilly in the 30's for wednesday with the rain or wet snow showers and then slowly moves up in northern new york and new england. by thursday still a breeze as high pressure tries to build in, the difference between these forces, creates a pressure gradient or still breezy conditions. it won't be until friday that we will see sun return and the wind really begin to die down. temperatures responding as well back in the 40's. overnight some drizzle, areas of fog, but no visibility issues and gusty wind continues, low of 35, during day tomorrow rain or wet snow showers even in philadelphia but nothing will accumulate, high temperature of 39 with the gusty win. on the exclusive eyewitness weather seven day forecast you see improvement friday, saturday, sunday, birds have good conditions, temperature 48, monday 52, and then by tuesday 51, and now that is something to look forward to.
