to everyone and opens up microphone so your voice can be heard. earlier this morning inside this burning home fire fighters heard that mayday alert go out, from fire fighter joyce craig lewis, they scrambled, desperate liz trying to save her life in the burning basement behind me but when they got there it was just too late. escorted by police and fire unit and hearst carrying body of fallen philadelphia fire fighter joyce craig lewis made its way up broad street. the 11 year veteran, mother of the 16 year-old son and one year-old daughter dying in the smoke and flames that destroyed this west oak lane home in the early morning hours. >> it is a very sad day for all of us, in the public service and certainly for all of our citizens. >> reporter: after the seven three-year old resident was rescued by fire fighters, commanders say that they ordered all others to evacuate the home, but they say, they

suddenly realized craig lewis was still inside the burning basement. >> i necessity that she was a hard worker, i knew she was a fire fighter's fire fighter. >> i can tell you she was beloved in this department. men a and women that have had had the pleasure of working with her were truly honored. >> reporter: neighbors watched as fire fighters wheeled their dying comrade to the medic unit trying to save her have. >> we looked around and saw them running down the street and there must have have been ten fire fighters. carrying someone. >> reporter: sources tell cbs-3 that craig-lewis was able to activate a mayday alert button on her radio signaling she was in distress, tests will be done if the second protective system which sends an audible alarm to give fire fighters a location, also worked properly. >> all of her equipment has been packaged, sent to the safety office, and investigation will be conducted. >> reporter: now cbs-3 has learned that since 1997, six philadelphia fire fighters

have died in basement fires, or fires that started in basements. right now the investigation is underway into what caused this fire and more details being learned by the minute, as to what led to the death of this brave fire fighter. live from west oak lane. from walt at the fire scene, we will move to "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch. justin is live outside lawncrest firehouse where she was assigned with more on her life and her career, justin? >> reporter: fire fighters at engine 24 tell us gist craig-lewis was here a all right time but everyone here knew how much she loved her job and her family says the the same, telling us that she died this morning doing what she loved. loved ones of joyce craiglewis knew her job was risky, but they also knew she savior the reward of saving lives. >> as dangerous as a the job is, it didn't matter to her

that is what she wanted to do. >> reporter: outside west oak lane home where craig lewis for the her last fire her cousin remembered a close call >> she had fell from the second floor to the first, she fell through the hole and she got burned severely on her legs. >> reporter: but she says her cousin refused desk duty, preferring instead to get back to fire fighting. at her station engine 64, flowers sat above her lock inner tribute, and black bunting lined the garage, same at engine 73 where crews say she was working an overtime call. no surprise craig-lewis who says her niece would do anything she could for her family or anybody else's. >> a single mother, doing all that she can to keep her family safe and helping other families out. that is her life, fire fighting was her life. >> reporter: the fire commissioner also acknowledging craig-lewis's dedication saying she cut her teeth at two of the busiest

firehousees in the the city, and tonight outside, engine 64 her planning the vigil at 7:00. live, i'm justin finch, for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". justin, thank you. keep it here for continuing coverage of the tragic death story, the fire fighter joyce craig lewis. we will have the latest on air and on line at cbs philly to the come. also tonight, the the jersey shore, under water. our nor'easter caused flooding in avalon, cape may county. roads are completely covered and homes are surrounded. we have team three coverage of the nor'easter. cleve bryan is in atlantic city but we will start with kathy in the weather center. the kathy. >> our storm is pulling away, heavy rain threat is gone but we are looking at other threats as well. we have had colder air building in and we still have those very gusty wind, across the delaware valley and it will take a couple days to get rid of those. our storm over long island is moving north, you can see that rain changing over to snow,

even in the poconos, and that is where we do expect some a accumulation overnight tonight. so that will not be an issue. it goes into affect late tonight through tomorrow morning for snow and some ice with limited accumulation. the good news is with those cooling temperatures these northwesterly wind will keep additional flooding from being as bad as it was this morning, high tied later on tonight, we have northwest wind pulling water away instead of pulling it on shore so we do not really anticipate a big impact as we saw. look at this eyewitness cam, this is what high tides did this morning with the rain and persistent wind bringing that water on shore this morning. jason shows really the road is covered with water and that has been allowed to subside and coastal flood warnings have been allowed to expire as well. rain amounts down the shore quite heavy between two and some spots 3 inches. in bethlehem only an inch of rain. rest of us we're just expecting a few rain showers this evening, some gusty wind

and temperatures falling back into the 30's. >> we have new video coming into "eyewitness news" from all over the jersey coast. this is a look at flooded streets in long beach island where water rose a few feet in some spots. police have been directing drivers to the back roads to avoid getting swamped. we are receiving reports of severe beach erosion in that area as well. coastal flooding in atlantic city. emergency managers have have been on the clock, throughout the day. "eyewitness news", new jersey reporter cleve bryan is there right now with the closer look at the impact left behind by the storm, cleve, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, ukee. the the conditions have certainly improved at the shore but still you can see beyond me that much bigger than usual waves are slamming into the north end of atlantic city. this is a day at the shore that most people tried to spend inn doors. it wasn't a storm to take for granted a as nor'easter kicked

up strong winds and wave at the jersey shore. >> beach front are getting pounded right now. >> reporter: from atlantic city to ocean city we saw beach erosion as well as swamped roadways, caused by tidal flooding. >> i threw in a low lying area at 8:00 or 8:30 and it will be there for high tides. >> reporter: atlantic city has fire police and emergency managers with crews on stand by in case of stranded drivers. this city senior transport bus broke down after getting stuck in deep water. one local admits that she and neighbors moved hazard signs to be sure drivers pay attention. >> we saw we move it the so we can keep everybody off the streets because the last nor'easter there was a girl right here she was sitting on top of her car with a will little poodle and her car was stuck. >> reporter: multiple neighborhoods had flooding issues and that could change. atlantic city officials hope to use fema money to modernize a draining system that has been out of use for decades.

health reporter stephanie stahl checks out, skin products that protect against that dirty air, that is tonight at 11:00 o'clock. investigators continue to piece together more clues about a deadly plane crash in maryland that killed six people. they now say the flight data recorder shows no indication of engine trouble before the aircraft, crashed into a house, belong to go marie gamel. she's originally from brick township new jersey. she was killed with two children and three others on the plane. last week three delaware churches were burn to the ground and now police tell eyewitness news that they have the men who did it. the churches are all, within several miles in the town of felt on. yesterday investigators caught up with joseph, and alex harrington, junior. they have been charged with arson and burglary. it is probably the last thing you'd expect to see out in the middle of the woods,

and atm, a couple of hunter stumbled across this one in rockland township berks county. authorities are now tracing its serial number to see just where it came from and in word if there was any money still inside. therapy dogs are helping college students, relief their stress on the eve of final exams. 47. university of delaware, lewis, delaware 44 miles an hour gust. lehigh ton at middle school a 36-mile an hour gust and airport base in dover gusting to 34 miles an hour. temperatures, still, pretty mild, for this time of the day and this time of the year. allentown is at 42. poconos still above freezing. but not for long. most of the rain, has fallen. we're just going to be seeing little descriptions and drabs during the evening period but you can see where the heavier rain fell through south jersey especially through areas of cape may, atlantic county, and into parts of the burlington county. ocean as well. over 2 inches in hammington, woodbine, the same, heading toward toms river where they saw some flooding, over 2 inches of rain there as well. as our storm pull as raids ever so slowly like a classic nor'easter does we will see wind become northwesterly. as it approaches it is northeasterly. as it leaves we will get northeast wind. it will be cold are tomorrow with temperatures in the 30's and windy conditions, wind chills in the 20's and a few wet snow showers. thursday, still under the influence of that storm, even

though it is over northern new york and new england, temperatures will be around 40 degrees or so. by friday, high pressure finally builds in the south, and temperatures, warming up through the 40's, but it is really going to take until the second half of the weekend to see a significant change. the wind will persist as well, tomorrow gusting to 30 miles an hour, 32 miles an hour gust in philadelphia, tomorrow afternoon and then by thursday mainly down the the shore, we will see those higher gusts but still, on the breezy side, until friday. overnight low temperature will fall to 35, with wind chills in the 20's, and tomorrow high of 39 with some rain, some wet snow and then improvement comes over weekend especially saturday and sunday. by monday the the high of 52. tuesday 51. still mild, and the best news is we will be seeing the sun. we have not seen that. >> we like the sun. >> yes. >> it is hard to remember on days like this. >> we might see 18 holes, i don't know, hey, hey. >> nice. >> thanks, kathy. do you have your lights up yet? we want to see pictures of
