>> ♪ >> a final farewell. hundreds pay tribute to fallen firefighter joyce craig, the first female philadelphia firefighter to die in the line of duty. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thank you so much for joining us. first responders from all around the country gathered in west oak lane to honor a hero. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson was there as the city said goodbye. >> reporter: full honors for a fallen hero. on this december saturday morning, hundreds of people family and friends officials and dignitaries firefighters and first responders from across the country came to honor one. 11 year philadelphia fire veteran 36-year-old joyce craig. >> when you lose one, it affects everyone 'cause we are family. >> reporter: craig died doing what she believed in, battling a fire to save a life. >> she died a hero. so it's a beautiful thing to have known joyce. >> reporter: she lost her life fighting flames in west

oak lane early tuesday morning leaving behind two children and a legacy of care and diligence. >> always made us feel like family. >> reporter: her funeral service saturday a somber highlight reel of praises for a woman described as gentle and tough as nails by the people who knew her best. >> the first time she got hurt on the job. >> reporter: out of respect to the family's wishes we stayed outside and listened. her brothers and sisters tears in their eyes watched their commissioner who calls what happened a personal failure and a quiet blessing. >> i walk around with this black band on my wrist for the past seven years and know what it says, everyone goes home. everyone does go home and i'll say that to you that joyce is home. >> reporter: and in a final moment of triumph mayor michael nutter gave the firefighter what she lived to achieve and died to obtain.

>> joyce michelle craig is now posthumously promoted to the rank of lieutenant. flags at half-staff saturday. for weeks to come can the mayor declaring 30 days of mourning all across the city including and maybe perhaps especially here at a place now lieutenant joyce craig called a home away from home. reporting from philadelphia's engine 64, i'm steve patterson, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, the firefighters union has established a memorial fund for joyce craig's two children. you'll find more information at cbsphilly.com. and authorities say a woman was killed in a house fire in lower chichester delaware county. flames ripped through the home on the 100 block of krohn field avenue this morning. smoke and flames were shooting through the windows when firefighter as arrived. neighbors say they're praying

for the family. >> it's very terrible to lose someone before christmas. i mean, it is just an absolute tragedy. i mean like i feel sorry for the family. i was able to get over to the family to give my condolences. >> the red cross is helping seven people displaced by the fire. the fire marshal is investigating exactly how the fire started. and the search for shane montgomery it is now into it is third week. officers with the philadelphia police marine unit they were back out searching the schuylkill river again today. the west chester university student vanished thanksgiving morning after leaving kildare's pub on main street. new surveillance video reportedly shows montgomery walking across the bridge over the manayunk canal and toward a parking lot near the river. also police are investigating a deadly crash along the roosevelt boulevard in juniata park. the driver of a vehicle lost control and struck a tree near luzerne street just after 2 o'clock this morning. the vehicle caught fire and the driver was pronounced dead at that scene. police have not release

released the victim's name. national call for action. demonstrators took to the streets today to protest against police killing cans of and armed black men. one of the largest marches was held in washington, d.c. cbs news correspondent craig boswell has more. >> reporter: thousands of people joined the mothers of michael brown and trayvon martin in washington for a march to protest police brutality. >> i'm a parent and i'm phrased to let my child go outside. you know, no mother should feel like this. >> it's important to stand up. stand up for everybody. equality and justice for all. >> reporter: demonstrators want lawmakers to make reforms to the justice system following the recent deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of police officers. >> the law is for all. what's good for me is good for you. >> reporter: many brought their children. >> i'm tired of people saying black people don't matter what

>> got a story you would like us to investigate? e-mail your ideas to i-team at cbs3.com. >> a very rare sight in california. a tornado. this one swept through los angeles yesterday morning. it was an ef0 with about 65 to 85 miles an hour winds. the small tornado spun through a neighborhood scattering debris and toppling trees and it also caused some minor damage but no serious injuries. storm triggered heavy rains as well. a couple was rescued from rain swollen l.a. river and torrential rain triggered a mudslide. mud and rock were stacked up to the windows. more than a foot of snow also fell in some places. some area highways remain closed and ski resorts in the mountains east of l.a. have a foot of fresh snow. well, crews meantime they begin laying the foundation for what will be the tallest sky scrape interphiladelphia. construction crews, they

poured 400 truckloads of concrete into the ground at 18th and arch in center city center city dam this foundation was for the 59 story innovation and technology center. it will attach the structural support to the bedrock. the foundation is 10 feet thick. have you taken a close look at today's dately i recently just d it's 12/13 n-14. the rare date is giving people a reason to get married. after all it's an easy anniversary to remember, guys. in las vegas the line at the courthouse it started outside the building. there won't be another sequential character date for 20 years when january 2nd, 2034 arrives. it will take 89 nears to get to. new christmas photos of prince george. he'll be 17 months old on december 22nd. the shots were taken late last

thermometer in the days ahead but not enough to melt away too much of that snow pack. on storm scan3 we're still finding the spin going on with this retreating storm. obviously not too much in the way of any additional moisture set up with this but it will keep us in more cloud cover than i think a lot of people were hoping for today. we at least are dry and we'll stay that way they hadding into tomorrow. wide opened space of high pressure locked in place continuing until monday. here's what you're seeing less of the storm that plowed through california and the pacific northwest here in the last few days. it never necessarily shows up very well on radar across the rockies but this storm is so potent and once it pulls into the central plains it's going to somewhere and it's going to go east. let me show was future weather brings along. the jet stream is sort of making this very large trough across the u.s. once it runs into the high pressure cell that's locked in place for us it sort of sends that storm on a northerly path. while we'll eventually see

some wet weather out of it it's not a major storm for us and we have until tuesday before that happens. to the live neighborhood network we go, 37 degrees. you can still maiko the center city skyline. you got to look closely but it's off in the distance and temperatures are in the mid to upper 30's right now. we're only going to be dropping off a few more degrees. as the sun comes up tomorrow morning we're right around 34 degrees in philadelphia with just a few clouds overhead keeping it pretty tranquil for you. sun and clouds continue to be the theme through the day tomorrow which is very good news for the eagles game. speaking of let's take you into south philadelphia for tomorrow night. big matchup. looks like the weather will play no role and it looks like a nice clear sky, too. 40 degrees at kickoff and pretty much for any tailgating plans you have it's all looking good for us tomorrow. as we look ahead into tuesday that will be the time frame that we start to see some showers firing up around the region and we can expect sun to return as the days progress. notice, though, little bit of a delayed reaction but it's a

everyone so excited. little more than 24 hours before the rematch between the cowboys and the eagles. the winner takes control of the nfc east and here are the cowboys arriving at the team hotel. both teams nine and four, dallas undefeat on the road. the eagles took care of them on thanksgiving 33 to 10 but quarterback mark sanchez says the birds need to clean up a few things or the result will not be the same. >> flight to be a little better in the red zone. i think if we put those couple things together and continue to finish strong i think we'll have a good outcome but it's going to take a lot of work this week and the team we're playing this week is going to be a a lot better than the team we played thanksgiving. >> what's at stake, it's a lot of excitement with that. they all around beat up on us really good. >> you don't want to miss sunday kickoff right here on cbs3. join me, sports director
