"eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson was at today's somber service in west oak lane. >> reporter: full honors for a fallen hero. on this december saturday morning, hundreds of people, family and friends, officials and dignitaries firefighters and first responders from across the country came to honor one, 11 year philadelphia fire veteran 36-year-old joyce craig. >> when you lose one, it affects everyone 'cause we are family. >> reporter: craig died doing what she believed in, battling a fire to save a life. >> she died a hero. so it's a beautiful thing to have known joyce. >> reporter: she lost her life fighting flames in west oak lane early tuesday morning leaving behind two children and a legacy of care and diligence. >> made us feel like family. >> reporter: her funeral service saturday a somber highlight reel of praises for a woman described as both gentle and nurturing and tough as nails by people who knew

her best. >> i was with joyce the first time she got hurt on the job. >> reporter: out of respect to the family's wishes we stayed outside and listened. her brothers and sisters tears in their eyes watched their commissioner who calls what happened a personal failure in and a quiet blessing. >> i walk around with this black band on my wrist for the past seven years and know what it says? everyone goes home. the reality is everyone does go home and i'll submit you to that joyce is home. >> reporter: and in a final moment of triumph mayor michael nutter gave the firefighter what she lived to watch can chief and died to obtain. >> joyce michelle craig is now posthumously promoted to rank of lieutenant. >> ♪ >> reporter: now for weeks to come, the mayor declaring 30 days of mourning, all across the city including and

maybe perhaps especially here at a place now lieutenant joyce craig called a home away from home. reporting from philadelphia's engine 64, i'm steve patterson, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> the firefighters union has established a memorial fund for joyce craig's two children. you'll find more information at cbsphilly.com. and now demonstrators in several cities took to the streets today to protest the recent deaths of unarmed plan men at the hands of police officers. one of the largest demonstrations was in washington, d.c. thousands of people joined the mothers of michael brown and trayvon mart ton for a march in the capital. protesters want lawmakers to make reforms to the justice system. the march in new york city continuing into the night. thousands demanding justice for those who have lost their lives due to the alleged acts of police brutality. they're outraged over the recent grand jury decisions not to indict the police

officers in the michael brown and eric garner cases. protesters have been peaceful. chilly night around the region. "eyewitness news" here in rittenhouse square tonight where folks were bundled up pretty tightly out there. we're in for a milder sunday at least. meteorologist kate fehlinger is in for justin and she's got the very latest on the forecast. hey, katie. >> hey, natasha. not too much a warmup but enough that it may be more noticeable for you by tomorrow storm scan this evening it's quiet and speckles of green that you find here as we are find argue round say i-78 for example, it's all just ground clutter at the radar site, it's not actually precipitation being picked up but we have cloud cover out there right now and we're going to find that through the better part of the evening and through the overnight as well. around the region we go here taking a look at some of the area temperatures. we've generally leveled off into the mid and upper 30's generally for the region as a

whole. we're at 31 degrees up in mount pocono right now and those northwest winds are still blowing, not that you can notice them but it's not as hash, as we've seventeen in recent kate days. around the region once again, generally most sunshine down by the shore points but there will be sun everywhere and it should be a brighter day for you. headlines are as such. tranquil pattern for now. as mention #ed it will be milder with time but there will be a fresh rounder of showers that move in by tuesday. we'll talk more about the timing on that and the reason we're going to see it in the first place coming up later in the show. natasha back to you. >> thank you indicator tea. a neighbor jumps into action to help rescue several children from a burning home in delaware county. sadly enough, that grandmother did not make it out alive. "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers has the details from lower chichester. >> reporter: a boom shook the neighborhood just after 7:30 saturday morning. a fire tour through this lower

chichester home. >> a bunch of flames came out and we heard help, help. >> reporter: several people were trapped inside the home including children, a mother and two of her children were in the front yard frantic as their siblings their father and their grandmother were still inside. >> to the top step all i seen was fire coming out of the bottom step coming up. >> reporter: in this case has wells raced over to help. he heard those trapped inside and broke basement windows to get them out. the children safe nicholas helped pull their father through the window. >> there was noplace to really touch him. the burns on this man was crazy. skin was peeling off him. >> reporter: burned while trying to save the can children's grandmother. neighbors say her name was doris and she died in the fire. >> tragedy, it really was a triad dee. >> reporter: meanwhile neighbors immediately began collecting donations with bags of clothing piling up quickly inside their homes. it's the least they can do, they say, for a family and a father who did their best to save those they loved.

>> definitely he's a hero, definitely. >> reporter: investigators are still trying to determine what caused this fire in the first place. meanwhile, the father and several of his children remain in the hospital recovering. we're in lower chichester delaware county, matt rivers, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> a 49-year-old man is in critical condition after someone shot him six times in north philadelphia. "eyewitness news" at the scene on west york street and north 17th street. police say the victim was having an argument with another man when the suspect pulled out a gun and started firing. the suspect then ran off. police continuing their search for the gunman at this hour. and also the search for shane montgomery, it is now entering its third week. officers with the philadelphia police marine unit were back out again searching the schuylkill river today. the west chester university student vanished on thanksgiving morning after leaving kildare's pub on main street. new surveillance video reportedly shows montgomery walking across a bridge over the manayunk canal and toward

a parking lot near the schuylkill river. new tonight, a $1.1 trillion spending bill is on its way to president barack obama. late this evening, the senate passed the long term funding bill averting a government shutdown. the measure provides money for nearly the entire government through september 30th 2015. and crews begin laying the foundation for what will be the tallest skyscraper in philadelphia. construction crews, they poured 400 truckloads of concrete into the ground at 18th and arch in center city today. this foundation is for the 59 story innovation and technology center. it will attach the building's structural support to the bedrock. the foundation is 10 feet thick. and a philadelphia native meantime is the new national president and ceo of the ymca. kevin washington was honored during a reception that the christian street ymca in south philadelphia.

>> got a story you would like us to investigate? e-mail your ideas to i-team at cbs3.com. >> a rare sight in california. a tornado. this one swept through los angeles yesterday morning. it was an ef-0 with about 65 to 85 miles an hour winds. the small town spun through a neighborhood gathering debris and toppling trees, this tornado d it caused minor damage but no injuries. storm triggered heavy rains as well. a couple was rescued rain swollen l.a. river. in camarillo springs it triggered a mudslide. more than a foot of snow also fell in some places. some area highways remain closed and ski resorts in the mountains east of l.a. have a foot of fresh snow. have you taken a close look at today's date writ written it down possibly, it's 12/13/14. this rare date is giving a lot

still want to submit them for the holiday lights display here at cbs3, you can you know, you still got a chance to do that. weather looks like it will cooperate. we'll check with our eyewitness weather watcher network temperatures we're finding around the region from you the viewers are pretty much into the mid and upper 30's at this point. we're going to highlight just a couple of them. 37 degrees is the temperature sent in from jim over the last half hour. he's in media pennsylvania and he's got cloud cover out there. just off to the south in new castle county lisa sent in 38 degrees in the last 15 minutes, she's in wilmington and i like her comment, it's a beautiful evening, just some clouds. we'll go into one more. let's take the pair of 3's here further off to the north and west. lieutenant allen matthews sent that one over the last half hour from bernville. he's got clouds right now. he says he's staying inside where it's warm. guys if you love watching the

retreat we do have cloud cover. then off to the west we got to take you all the way out to the rocky mountain range. we've been tracking that powerful storm across the pacific northwest, then into california now it's starting to cross through the mountains. it's got to go somewhere. let's see where it intends to co-we've got high pressure for now can which will help steer that storm off to the north. it generally looks like it's just going to be rain showers because our temperatures will be a little too warm for anything but plain old rain. currently we are again generally into the mid 30's, upper 30's here at philadelphia international airport, 31 in mount pocono and as we take you forward in the forecast here later on tonight we'll drop down to 34 degrees with some clouds and it looks like those chance have a chance to break before. 46 degrees for tomorrow's high under sunshine. of course the eagles-cowboys game, a-okay, weather no issue whatsoever, expecting a
