we are live with the latest on this investigation. new this morning a nasty crash involving a philadelphia police wagon send two officers to the hospital we will update their condition. and a final farewell to fire lieutenant joyce craig. friend and family gathered for an emotional tribute. good morning to you today, it is sunday, december 14th, lets check that forecast with carol standing by. and it is slightly milder as you head to the north, we have 42 degrees in reading,

but a similar sky condition there but you can see on storm scan three, but barely make out there are some clouds. looking out in the ocean, you can see there aren't any by long island and that has moved back west and net is that there are clouds over mess of our area right now. we should be a able to thin some of these clouds out, however as we go through rest of the day. 40 degrees in the airport. forty in allentown. thirty-eight in reading. it has warmed up to 35 in the millville area. thirty-six in dover right now. we have temperatures in the mid 40's, 46 degrees, sun, clouds, and, it will time that out future weather says, that we do see some breaks in these clouds but temperatures staying in the 40's, and that is where they are supposed to be. many would like it warmer and maybe some colder than that. we will check out those seven day temperatures coming up, nicole. >> carol, thank you. well, two philadelphia police officers are hospitalized this morning after they were involve in the

car accident, early this morning in frank for. investigators say the officers were injured after an accident at frankford avenue at cellar street at 3:00 a.m. the officers are in stable condition this morning. also new fire fighters rescued four people from a burning home in germantown. the flames broke out around 1:00 a.m. in the first floor of the home on east colter street. when fire fighters arrived on the scene several people were trapped on the home's roof, one person was taken to the hospital, and there is no word on their condition just yet. investigators are working to determine what spark the flames. a delaware county family is dealing with the loss of a loved one after a fire rips through their home. "eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhry is live from lower chichester with more on how neighbors stepped into help, syma, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, nicole. a neighbor jumped into action and saved several children from this home behind me but sadly their grandmother didn't

make it out alive and neighboring rallying together to help this family during their need. this fire was captured on cell phone video a as you can see flames shooting out of the house. >> such a tragedy. >> fire started just after 7:00 a.m. saturday, and fromfield avenue in lower chichester. several people were trapped inside the home including children. a mother and two of her kids were in the front yard frantic as their siblings, their father and their grandmother were still inside. >> i ran over my bear socks, half dressed and tried to go to the top step but all i seen was fire coming out of the bottom steps coming up. i knew there was kids inside. >> reporter: nicholas wells lived next door to the home and raced over to help. he heard those trapped inside ape broke basement windows to get them out. with the children, safe, he helped pull their father through the window. sad lie, their grandmother didn't make it out. neighbors have rallied

together collecting donations to help the family. >> i feel sorry for the family, i was able to get over to the family to get my condolences and my thoughts and prayers where them in this time as well. >> reporter: the father and several children were taken to the hospital, right now investigators are trying to figure out what caused this fire. we're live from lower chichester syma chowdhry for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> so very sad, thank you. a 49 year-old man is in critical condition after being shot six times in north philadelphia. "eyewitness news" at the scene on west york street in north 17th street. police say that the victim was having an argument with another man when the suspect pulled out of the gun and started firing. that suspect ran off, police continue to search for the the gun man. search for shane montgomery is now in its third week, officers with the philadelphia police man marine june writ back out searching the schuylkill river on saturday. west chester university student vanished thanksgiving morning after leaving kildares

pub on main street. new surveillance video reportedly shows montgomery walking across the a bridge over manayunk canal towards a parking lot near the river. flags will be lowered to half staff as philadelphia mourns the the first female fire fighter, killed in the line of duty. fire fighters lined the streets to pay their final respects to lieutenant joyce craig, the 11 year philadelphia fire veteran was killed battling a a fire to save a life in west oak lane tuesday morning. hundreds gathered to pay tribute and honor her service. when you lose one, it effects everyone, because we are family. >> she died a hero, so it is a beautiful thing to actually, to have known joyce. >> reporter: philadelphia mayor michael nutter posthumously promoted joyce craig to lieutenant and ordered flags at half mass for the next several days.

"eyewitness news" reporter steve paterson will have have more in our next half an hour. the philadelphia fire department also hit social media to remember joyce craig. they tweeted this photo of cruz battling the fire with the caption we will continue to honor the the memory of lieutenant craig by doing what we do, protecting our community. they used the hash tag dedication, and service. and we are following a developing story out of china this morning, where a nursery collapsed and leaves several kindergarten children dead. the terrible story we will have an update on that for you. also ahead a late night agreement on capitol hill means the government will not shut down, but not everybody is pleased about the budget deal. and mega mansion for sale, yep, it has got two kitchens and a closet bigger than most homes. we will take you for a tour inside we we come right back.

now the the private nursery has 260 students, enrolled. well, memorials will take place all around the country to mark the somber anniversary of the shooting at sandy hook, elementary. two years later and recovery there still continues. the thousands office newtown residents went through therapy programs made available through grants and donations. work underway to build a new sandy hook elementary school. town is reviewing ideas for a permanent memorial honoring 26 victims killed on the tragic

day two years ago. well, another somber anniversary, this one in colorado, friend and family gathered to remember claire davis. teenager was shot and killed by a fellow classmate, one year ago, saturday. claire's father spoke at last night vigil. names of 14 victims were read representing students who lost their lives to violence at colorado schools. it is 8:10. budget deal is in place in washington that will keep budget running throughout the next year. cbs news correspondent wendy gilette reports unexpect vote in the senate came late last night after an all day session. >> the yeah are 56, the no's are on 40. >> reporter: senate easily passed $1.1 trillion spending bill saturday night that fund most of the federal government, for nine months. it a assured there is no possibility of a governmental shut down this year. >> the motion is adopted. >> reporter: house passed the bill thursday night and president obama has already

indicated he will sign it. >> this by definition was a compromise bill. >> reporter: bill includes funding for the federal government through september 15th, the end of the fiscal year. the loan exception is the department of home land security which is only funded through february. the bipartisan deal came despite efforts of texas republican ted cruz, and two other republican senators. they wanted an amendment that would ban any government fund for president obama's executive order on immigration. >> tonight both democrats and republicans will have the opportunity to show america whether they stand with the president, who is defying the will of the voters, or with the the millions of americans who want a safe, and legal immigration system. >> junior senator from texas is wrong, wrong, wrong, on several counts. >> democrats took advantage of the session to approve a large number of obama administration nominees before republicans take control of the senate, next year. wendy gilette the for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". president obama a will

travel to the region tomorrow to honor our nation's heroes. he is scheduled to stop by joint base maguire lakehurst in new jersey. president obama will speak to members of the military thanking them for service and sacrifice. the it will not be a long visit though. the the president will be only in the area for a few hours tomorrow afternoon. well, area residents felt the ground shaking yesterday morning a small earthquake actually hit central new jersey at 7:13 a.m. u.s. geological survey says it registered 1.9 on the richter scale and centered about 17 miles east south east of trenton. there you have it. that is what you felt, perhaps. carol? how are you doing with this weather. >> yes, who was it carol king singing i feel the earth move under my feet. >> yep. >> we have a sky slope here, nicole. >> very nice. >> not adding to the snow totals either from the sky or from their snow guns. somebody is out on the ski slope though walk ago long.

remember in days at least. forty in pottstown. thirty-eight in mount holly. everybody is above freezing mark with their wind not a lot of winds but enough to make it feel slight liz cooler. feels like 37 in philadelphia. feels like 29 in millville. twenty-two in the poconos. we have our quiet weather pattern at least in the short term where it is going to be finding some sun and clouds and temperatures getting to about 46 degrees. just around there over the next couple of days. our future weather, shows us some clouds, it wasn't right when it started because it should have have had clouds. when it is in the right when it starts you have to say, maybe it is not right even as we go out in time but assuming that it is right as we go out in time it continues to say that by tuesday evening we are looking at some showers around here, rain showers, even though there is some indication early on tuesday morning, that areas well to the north, and to the west, could start with a little freezing drizzle but that is not guarantied. just thought for tuesday if you are well to the north and

west. rest of us our temperatures should be warm enough that anything we see is rain and they too after that brief period of frozen precipitation would change over to all rain on tuesday. and then by tuesday evening we're still looking at the rain showers coming on through. we have hanukkah it starts on tuesday december 16th at, temperature of 45 degrees with those clouds and showers possibly at that point and then winter begins the week after that, we have the 21st, the shortest daylight, nine hours, 19 minutes and 57 seconds. our weather headlines, quiet weather pattern. we have that for now. we have temperatures at normal, maybe slightly above normal into the 40's to daze and over the next couple of days with a possible showers on tuesday. enjoy the 46 degrees, with the winds not as strong as they were yesterday, tonight we will drop down to 32 degrees, partly cloudy skies, next couple of days in the 40's, tuesday maybe a couple of rain showers around here, by saturday, there may be a storm that forms and brings some rain or snow or maybe not.

"eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhry is live in lower chichester with the very latest on that story, syma? >> reporter: nicole, a family is in mourning after a fatal fire rips through this home here, behind me, inside, were several children, their father and their grandmother. we have cell phone video of what the fire looked like, this happened around 7:00 a.m. saturday on the 100 block of fromfield avenue in lower chichester. several people were trapped inside the home. now a mother and two children were in the front yard but

inside the house were other children, their father and their grandmother. neighbor help rescue kids and father from the burning home but sadly their grandmother did not make it out alive. we have talk with the man who sprang into action. >> i ran over, my bear socks, got dressed and then go to the top step and all i seen was fire coming out of the bottom steps coming up, and i knew there were kids inside. i heard father inside, and then basically me and him we broke out bottom windows and we help drag the three kids and i helped drag the father out of the house. >> the father and several children were taken to the hospital right now investigators are trying to figure out what caused this fire. we are live from lower chichester syma chowdhry for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> so tragic, same, thank you. cause of this fire in north philadelphia, remains under investigation, this morning, a fire fighter suffered minor injuries, battling the flames which broke out in the row home on

the 2700 block of westerly high avenue in saturday. the red cross is now assisting the six people displaced. it was a national call for action on saturday, demonstrators in several cities, took to the streets to protest against police killings of unarmed black men, one of the largest marches was in washington d.c. cbs news correspondent craig boswell has the details. >> reporter: thousands oz have people joined the mothers of michael brown and trayvon martin in washington for a march to protest police brutality. >> i'm a parent and i'm afraid to let my child go outside. no mother should feel like this. >> it is important to stand up, stand up for everybody, equality and justice for all. >> reporter: demonstrators want law make tours make reforms to the justice system following the recent deaths of up armed black men at the hands of police officers. >> in justice, no peace. >> the the law is for all, what is good for me is good

for you. >> reporter: many brought their children. >> i'm tired of people, telling me that black people don't matter because we do. >> reporter: parents who recently lost their kids in police killings urged demonstrators to keep pressuring lawmakers. >> this is a history making moment. our son, you know, they may not be here in body, but they are here about us and each and everyone of you. >> what a sea of people if they don't see this and make a change, then i don't know what we've got the to do. >> reporter: tens of thousands also marched saturday in boston and in new york city. craig boswell for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". now those protestness new york city, continued into the night as this morning, two nypd lieutenants are hospitalized after they were reportedly attacked while escorting protesters. it happened on the brooklyn bridge, authorities say that lieutenants were trying to arrest a man about to throw a

trash cannot street. that is when they say that they were swarmed by a crowd that kick them in the face, and the head. now, during the altercation police say they came into possession of this a bag containing hammers and a black mask. the it is unclear if they were used in the a attack on the officers. well, officers injuries are not life threatening, it is estimated 25 to 30,000 protesters took part in yesterday's march in new york. protests continue on the campus of uc berkley where a disturbing sight could be seen. we are told demonstrators hung cardboard effigies with historic references to past lynchings but there is no clear explanation given and many protesters found it offensive. 8:34 right now. a solder returns home to see his new born baby but ends up having to deal with a big issue at home in south carolina family's landlord won't let sergeant william bowls stay with his wife because his name is not on the

lease. the landlord says that they can only stay for up to seven days but the sergeant and his wife argue that the lease is just too vague. >> it is very unclear i do have have a difficult time enforcing this wayed on the vagueness of it. >> if i don't vacate premises he will tow my vehicle and press charges for criminal trespass and double charge rent. >> bolt says that his wife, a clemson student and brand new mom could be evicted if she does in the comply with the rules. all right. a former south jersey assembly woman is heading back to trenton this time as a state senator. cruz perez will serve the district, that was vacant when donald norcross what's electric to congress last month. cruz-perez will take the owes of office tomorrow afternoon and will hold that seat through next year. new jersey lawmakers are talking about raising the gas tax to pay for new roads and

bridges and fix old once but a quinnipiac university poll shows 58 percent of garden state residents oppose raising the gas tax. lawmakers are grabbling with how to pay for new infrastructure. democrats say raising taxes will likely be necessary, governor chris christie says all of the options are on the table. well, crews began laying foundation for what will be the tallest, sky scraper, in philadelphia. construction crews poured 400 truckloads of concrete, in the ground at 18th and arch. this foundation, for the 59 story innovation and technology center will attach the building's structural support to the bedrock. the foundation is 10 feet thick. a philadelphia native is new national president and ceo of the ymca. kevin washington was honored at christian street y mca in south philadelphia. he is first african-american to hold that position, washington began his career at

is a really nice look but it is a very representative look over the the area with a cloud cover that we're fining over us right new. so we have to continue to monitor some of these clouds this morning and we have a temperature of 38 degrees. and let's see, is frank registering a complaint or not. what happened to the sun. frank, it is up there, it is we have something between us and the sun. lets take a walk, shall we. walk over ben franklin bridge and end up in the weather center and wall, and you can see that we've got some clouds over philadelphia, right now and we've got some clouds in other locations as well. it is 40 degrees with some of those clouds and they are out in kutztown right now. temperatures are mild enough for this time of the morning and this time of the year. wind, however that just went from 12 miles an hurry to four, you may find a variation in the wind speed out there but i don't think it should be as windy today as it was yesterday. we have 40 degrees at the airport in philadelphia and in allentown, above freezing now, in the poconos at 33 degrees and we have he got 39 down in

wildwood at this point. feeling just slightly cooler because of the wind to we're getting in some locations. storm scan three is just that graded outlook. we have that grayed outlook outside too with the clouds we are dealing with at the present time. we should be able to muster up a couple of sun breaks later on this afternoon. high pressure is here but it is kind of the clouds that are just sort of trapped here. we're looking at those, but i think, later on today, we should be find something sun breaks and then tomorrow we should have a brighter day, at least computer models believe that, saying that we are looking at a few clouds over the the area, at the present time, and we will put this into motion, 2:00 in the afternoon we have some of these clouds around, we will start to clear out though as we move through the the night time hours and then tomorrow by 2:00 in the afternoon we will have a a lot of sunshine but it doesn't stay for long. notice what happens, tuesday, by 2:00 o'clock we will start to see the clouds rolling in here again and then we will see some showers rolling in here again. warm front, cold front and then these showers, but they leave and we will be left with dry weather again by the time

we will get to wednesday. quiet weather pattern for now so even with a couple of rain showers it should not be a big deal. temperature is at or slight liz above normal, that will take that. and then possible showers, coming here on that tuesday, time line, today, 46 degrees in philadelphia. at the shore 45 degrees. remember there is a small craft advisory for delaware bay and from just about atlantic city and south on the atlantic side because of the gusty wind. inland we will find them along the shore area about 30 miles an hour. poconos 40 degrees, partly sunny here, you are above the freezing mark. winds northwest generally between five and 10 miles an hour. tonight we will drop down around 32 degrees. partly cloudy skies. typical for this time of the year. tomorrow we will have a temperature in the mid to upper 40's. we will do it again, on tuesday with more clouds, and then chances of showers. and then by wednesday, 47. thursday, 40 degrees. notice that we will start to cool down again. friday is 41. then saturday, maybe we will

estimated 10,000 costume participants took part in the day long event, a portion of the proceeds benefit ellie corner leukemia fun days. holidays are going to the dogs, folks at philadelphia's hotel palmar.
