the price of oil is down from $108 a barrel in june to 58 today, and opec says even if the price goes to 40 they will not change production levels. what that means for gas prices, likely a similar slide. the cost of a gallon is already down more than $1 since june. we have two reports starting with jericka duncan. >> reporter: nationally the average for a gallon of regular gas is $2.56. down from more than $4 average in july of 2008 when prices hit an all-time high. and places like california where drivers typically pay more for gas, the current average per gallon is $2.88, that is down from $3.59 in 2013. >> denton monitors the i have for oil price service. >> how low do you think gas prices will actually go? >> i think by christmastime we will be below $2.50, it will be

cheapest christmas since 2008 but since there prices will continue to drop, already a dozen states that have a sub $2 price point and there is going to be more to follow. >> triple a estimates us households saving $100 a month in gasoline prices today compared to peak prices in the spring and summer. lower crude oil prices are expected to reduce household heating oil costs by 27 percent, a savings of $632 for families compared to last winter. >> right now it is simply supply and demand, the u.s. is producing more oil now than it has since 1986 and if we add another 50 or 60,000 barrels a day or so we will go back to comparison when richard nixon was in office. >> he says food and clothing prices could drop too. >> simply trucks delivering the food to the grocery stores, the clothes to the malls, et cetera, you have cheaper diesel prices so there may not be necessarily a fuel surcharge you might have

seen if prices were much higher than they are now. >> reporter: airlines are one of the biggest beneficiaries of this sharp drop in fuel prices and, jeff, analysts predict passengers could see air fares decrease by next year. >> glor: jericka, thank you very much. oil below $60 a barrel sent markets tumbling, the dow fell 315 points on friday, it opens tomorrow coming off its worse week since november 2011. from all of us we are joined by jack on the for, editor of barrons.com. >> oil prices are falling, why. >> the reason prices are falling is demand is weakening, why? because the global economy is weakening, obviously markets don't like that, what is more, any company that is involved in oil production, any country that is involved in oil production obviously is getting hammered you are feeling that in your 401-k, finally traders hate uncertainty and with opec's commentary today nobody can see a bottom in oil prices, traders take a self first ask questions later mental at this. >> glor: the big question is

the shale boom but there is going to be a big effect on shale production, what is that? >> so this is the supply-side of the story. the only -- the main reason at least there is a global glut of oil is because of this shale boom. the problems is it is very expensive to get oil out of these shale for nations, around $60, as oil skids below the $60 mark, they don't make anymore money, now they will keep pumping for a while but eventually that could reduce supply. >> glor: some of the potential operations are going to shut down. >> and there is operations in 20 states, that could mean layoffs. >> glor: let's talk about opec, in a different spot than a couple of decades ago, what can they do? >> they simply don't have the power they used to, their exports to the united states have been cut in half since 2008, the one lever they have is they can keep on pumping force prices down, that is going to hurt the shale producers and under cut nigeria and hurt putin in russia so they are playing a game of global chicken with oil prices right now, the only sure winner the american consumer at the gas pump. >> glor: all right, keep

from all of this congress in 2015 and the presidential race in 2016, we are joined from washington from our political director john dickerson tonight. what ted cruz did last night what does this mean for the incoming congress next year? >> well, for republican leaders in the senate it may mean more headaches, they were furious with ted cruz, they thought what he did was basically make a big noise for himself at their expense and what they worry, republican lead dores in the senate is that he sees his pathway to the presidency by basically running against republican leaders in the senate and that just means everything they do will have this kind of a fight associated with it. >> glor: all right. speaking of presidency in 2016, jeb bush set together a commencement address tomorrow and said this weekend he will release 250,000 e-mails plus from his time as governor of florida, is he leaning toward a run? >> well, those who talk to him feel like he is leaning towards a run, and he has been weighing a run for several months now. he has been thinking about two things, one, whether he can run

a positive solutions oriented campaign in a process that gets pretty ugly and been thinking about his family and whether he wants to drag his family through this. he has got three issues on education, on immigration and even on taxes that cause some friction with the base of the republican party, so it wouldn't be a cakewalk for him. >> glor: john, will all democrats just wait on one big-name on the republican side this is shaping up to be quite a field. >> well, if you look at the people who are at least thinking of making a bid for the presidency, it is probably the most robust field in republican history, you have got, in addition to jeb bush, chris christie, scott walk never wisconsin and then rick perry from texas, and then a number of senators, rick santorum form who ran last time is probably going to run again, marco rubio from florida, rand paul will also run and then of course as we talk about, ted cruise probably so really strong field and now we have to see who really decides to throw their hat in. >> glor: the discussion continues to pick up whether

expected to announce their part in a class action lawsuit against the maker of the assault rifle lanza used, don dahler reports. >> the families whose loved ones were taken from them in 2012 have had 24 months to mourn, 24 months to try to understand why, and 24 months to take legal action, that period ends today. so sandy hook victim families have reportedly filed a lawsuit against bushmaster, the company that made the semiautomatic rifle adam lanza carried. >> none of the families or their attorneys are commenting today, but connecticut senator richard blumenthal is. >> two years have passed and congress has been complicit in gun violence in this country by failing to act, and i share the frustration that may in part underlie the reason for this legal redress. >> bushmaster easies company remington is the subject of another class action, the plaintiffs in that suit contend the model 700 rifle can fire
