us a trail ya's prime minister says the incident may be politically motivated. let's get to "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers following the developments break nothing in the sat center. >> it is monday afternoon in sidney australia right now australian prime minister nonni abbott gave a short statement not long ago. in that statement he asked australians to remain calm and hopes this situation is resolved peacefully. >> we are being tested today in sidney. the police are being tested. the public is being testified. >> in a chilling piece of footage you see a gunman lead a hostage inside the cafe with her hands up. it appears that man is the lone gunman inside the lindt chocolate cafe the situation is unfoldinunfolding in martin plae heart of sidney's financial and shopping district typically packed during the holiday seas season. a black flag with white arabic window could be seen it in window at one point during the

standoff. >> we don't yet know the moat vague of the perpetrator. we don't know whether this is politically motivated although obviously there are some indications that it could be. >> reporter: police say the incident is isolated and involves only the one suspect and his hostages. it is not connected officials say to a suspicious package found earlier in the day at the famed sidney opera how fast the small cafe remains surrounded although police have not been in contact with the gunman. >> the officers that are there are well-trained unprofessional. they know what they're doing. they have trained for this. and i'm sure that they will get through and this will be an out come that will be -- will be positive. >> i think think of almost nothing more distressing, more terrifying than to be caught up in such a situation and our hearts go out to those people. >> reporter: the cafe where this is all happening is in the same building that houses the u.s. consulate.

the white house tells reporters that the president has been briefed on this current situation. worry live in the sat center, matt rivers, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> matt, thank you very much for that update. meantime a suspicious fire bring investigators from the fire marshal's office to a home in germantown. they're investigating claims that someone may have thrown a fire bomb at this house on east coulter street. arson investigators say fire bomb may have been thrown at the home next door on december 1s december 1st. the homeowner and in today's' incident believes someone is trying to harm one of the women in the house. >> as i came down the steps, and got right here, all this was full of fire. second time my window got broke. now the fire bomb. we've been getting threats and everything. >> at least two people including an infant were taken to einstein medical center. their conditions are not being released just yet. and "eyewitness news" was there firefighter was seen exiting a home in chester delaware county through the

window. fire was reported in the basement of this home on 200 block of west 22n 22nd street jt afternoon. it reached two alarms before units were finally able to bring the under control. there are no reports of any injuries but the red cross is helping a family of nine. the cause of this blaze is still under investigation at this ho hour. >> and young boy is recovering night after getting his foot stuck in an escalator at the oxford valley mall in bucks county. a passing shopper post add cell phone picture on twitter as emergency crews worked to get him free. they eventually did get him out after about 20 minutes or so. he was taken to the hospital to get checked out but he is expected to be okay. a chilly but least a calm sunday night. the perfect weather to go out and get your christmas tree. pretty clear out there, right? not quite yet still some clouds around but eventually we will see the clearing skies and final smell sunshine returns but really won't feel like christmas over the next few days we're talking about that warming trend but we are her right now. clouds keeping temperatures up. currently we're in the 40s right now. 44 in philadelphia. 42 allentown. 33 in mount pock know. there's some clearing going on it cross far eastern new jersey that will be the trend through the overnight hours. 39 degrees already in quakerto quakertown. do unto 36 currently in willow grove and mt. holly, new jersey. checking in at 42 degrees. we mentioned a warming trend, yes, that is underway already. compared 24 hours ago, we're about five to 8 degrees warmer in some spots across the delaware valley. so that's a sign of things to come. there's storm scan3. not much happening still see cloud cover over the region. break over parts of ocean and burlington county, inform. that will continue to push westward through the overnight hours. temperatures slowly drop into the 30s waking up tomorrow

sensible gun policy marched for tighter restrictions in pennsylvania. they say gun violence is an epp depth mick in touches families all around the country. >> my son was killed. i was a manager of a rite aid in chester and he was murdered. >> last year it kind of took a little bit more of a personal toll losing a friend of our family. >> three students who were killed by an estranged father. >> well, in the days following gun rights advocate pushed for teachers and school administrators to be armed in the classroom. guns are prohibited in pennsylvania schools unless they're there for a lawful purpose. in 28 states adults who are legal al loud to carry can do so in a public school. in new jersey, teachers may carry a gun with written permission from the head of the school. >> president barack obama is making a visit to our area tomorrow. the president will travel to joint base mcguire dicks lakehurst in new jersey. there he'll deliver remarks expressing his gratitude to our service members and their families.

play is one of thousands of documents hackers stole in the latest massive cyber per attack against an american company. >> this is not a problem related to any particular company. this is a global problem. >> this is just the latest problem for sony after hackers invaded computers at its entertainment arm novembe november 24th. then leaked sensitive and embarrassing information including executives disparaging personal e-mails about sony actors and others including president obama. >> sony is in big trouble. to me this is hollywood's edward snowden moment and what's a problem with that we don't know what's coming next. >> reporter: production company yvonne productions is worried anyone who has a screen play may try to publish it. yvonne warns the script is protected by copyright laws and says it will take all necessary steps to keep it under wraps. >> the james bond franchise is one of sony's most lucrative. the most recent movie sky fall raked in the most of any bond film ever.

>> a football player in auburn is fatally shot. freshman mitchell was shot an off campus apartment complex after midnight pronounced dead at the hospital a short timing a later. suspect identified as march kale heart. there's no word on the motive behind this shooting. >> new york college professor accused of of assaulting two police officers during a prote protest. 29-year-old eric lindh sixty four faces numerous charges including assault, robbery and rioting. the alleged attack happened saturday on the brooklyn bridge. at the time mostly peaceful demonstrations were being held on the grand jury decisions in the eric garner and michael brown cases a police spokesman said one lieutenant suffered a broken nose. and it was one man's epic idea

marriage proposal but it ended up with a big mess in the netherlands. the plan to use a crane to lower himself into the backyard of his girlfriend's house. that's where he would pop the question. but you can see things did not go quiet as planned. the crane tipped over and crashed right through the neighbor's house. luckily no one was injured and in the end, she still said yes. >> the birth of a child always memorable for one arizona couple it's even more special. that's because little victoria marie jones was born saturday at 10:11 a.m. on 12/13n14 the baby wasn't due in until use eve. the birth came a big surprise to mom and dad both navy veterans. >> our friends were new year's eve if you wait until 12:01 for new year's day. you'll be on the news. i was like okay. maybe comes when they want to come. >> and they still made it on the news. baby victoria and mom are said to be doing very well.

>> california meantime being hammered by another round of showers tonight. the state is still recovering from one of the worst storms to hit west coast in recent years. cbs news correspondent bigad shaban takes a look at what impact the weather is having on neighborhoods out west. >> this was living room at one point? yes. >> ron doesn't recognize his parents home. rocks and boulders fill the living room after friday's intense rain triggered mudslides north of los angeles. >> once i saw those rocks in there i said, oh, forget it. it's totaled. >> reporter: fire crews rescued his parents from their bed after an avalanche of debris slammed into their house and more than a dozen others. up to a foot of muck covers the floors. >> the rock now blocking the street are almost as tall as the houses here. >> that much earth actually moved last night. >> haven't chewer what county captain says this area was left

vulnerable as a wildfire scorched the hillside last year. >> there's nothing to hold to keep things from sliding or moving so the learning move when the water hits it when you have that large amount of water in a short period of time it's severely damaging. >> reporter: despite the mess, many who live in drought playinged california are welcoming the next storm in this week's forecast. >> we really sympathize with them. we need this rain. >> reporter: much of the swollen river will be convert flood drinking water but until more rain falls, most of california will remain under extreme drought conditions. bigad shaban for cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> we are in the middle of pacific weather pattern so some of those storms will be tracking eastward and it will bring milder air that's what we'll be seeing over the next two, three days or so. let's check in with our weather watchers right now again some clouds over the region partly to mostly cloudy. one of the cool spots up in perkasie chuck pressler checks in at 39 degrees.

back in our forecast. so that's really going to be the trend over the neck few days. so mention this pacific air mass moving on in. we have a big ridge in the jet stream coming up so the first storm california saw will be impacting our area tuesday. it'sly bringing milder air. we here we go. jet stream takes a little bit of a trip northward allowing temperatures to go above average starting on tuesday into wednesday. that jet flattens out allows some of that colder air from canada to spill back into the delaware valley by the end of the week. temperatures may go back below average by thursday of the upcoming week. sunshine finally returning at least this computer model is showing it i don't think we'll see tollly clear skies but we'll call a mixture of sun and clouds for your monday afternoon. enjoy it. it will be pleasant. clouds do quickly pilled back in on tuesday. i think the first half of the day stays dry. watch the showers coming in later tuesday afternoon into tuesday night. not a big storm system it has really weakened. not expecting a whole lot of rain.

it's gone by wednesday. partial sunshine returns wednesday afternoon i think wednesday will be our warmest day. winds still out of the northwest for monday after non that's a cool wind temperatures near average and then finally the winds switches around out of the south tuesday. allowing some of that warmer air to move back nuttery job. chilly start tomorrow morning. we will drop it into the mid 30s in many spots. rebounding back to the mid 40ing which is right where we should be for the middle of december. heading into tuesday a little bit milder getting close to that 50-degree mark but watch out for the showers coming in for the second half of the day. partly cloudy overnight. it's chilly. 35 degrees for center city. some suburbs will be a little bit colder than that with the clearing skies. towards day break overall pleasant day on monday. sunshine, mixed with some clouds, westerly wind coming in about 10 miles per hour. here's your hanukkah forecast sunset on tuesday night coming in at 4:37. temperature in the mid 40ing at that time with clouds and some showers around. all right. here we government here's the upcoming week.

again milder temperatures for monday, tuesday and wednesday mid 40 to go around 50 degrees much that's a few degrees above average. best shot for some showers will be later on tuesday afternoon tuesday night. we dry out for wednesday with a high near 50. then we cool it down again by the end of the week. keep it dry with sunshine thursday and friday highs in the low 40s and then we look ahead to next weekend there could be a storm system that could bring some rain and snow all depending on the temperature so that's something to watch coming up. >> all right. justin, thank you so much. >> also something to watch that game at the linc right now beas. >> feeling a big battle down at the linc. they were way behind. took the lead. behind and stuff going on. plus cole hamels talks about all those trade rumors and where he'd like to play if in fact he is traded much that's coming up in sports.

and more dez bryant made it 38 38-27. the game now in the fourth quarter eagles just turn it over again. should be a tight finish. we'll let you know what goes down. >> all right. giants and redskins big blew with a big game out of the star rookie o'dell beckham, jr. he had 12 catches, 143 yards and three touchdowns. giants goat the win at 24-13 eagles and redskins next week. >> baseball news the man who mentioned most often in the trades as far as what big could come back to the phillies, cole hamels. cole was silent da-da. he joined former teammate brad lidge on mlb network radio and talked about where he'd like to go in in fact he was trade. >> my family is from the west coast and my wife's family is from the midwest if anybody does happen you do, you have to kind of look at that different perspective. whatever city is going after winning i think that could definitely change every sort of perspective and every desire
