♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> now at 11:00 o'clock, another major retailer is hacked. and the credit information of more than a million people may now be in the wrong hands. good evening, i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. tonight, less than week before christmas there's more personal information at risk. >> this time it's staples. nine stores across our region are affected in this latest data

breach. live at 11:00 we turn to "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt at one of those stores on columbus boulevard in south philadelphia. david. >> reporter: chris, 115 stores hit in a nationally as you mentioned several in our area. including this store if you went to a local staples in august or september, you may want to check your bank account. during the busy final few days of the holiday shopping season news that almost 1.2 million credit and debit cards were hacked at staples stores across the country doesn't sit well with shoppers. >> i just used my card and it's kind of scary. >> maureen just loaded up on office supplies in northeast philadelphia. this is one of 115 stores nationwide hit by criminals at different times between july and september. staples made the announcement late friday afternoon. many customers had no idea until we told them. >> this is really a big problem because people they put the

trust in the companies, you know, not only staples but everywhere else. >> reporter: and stale pills isn't the only store with security breach issues. the chain joins a growing list an growing number of holiday shoppers say id theft is top of mind. >> it makes me very nervous to go to the store to go to shopping. >> reporter: she's not alone. but what can you done to stop these security breaches? >> unfortunately, i think it's a problem that's here to stay. >> reporter: dr. robert dividio is a professor and cyber crime expert at drexel university. he says the problem is literally in the cards. >> we should be gradually moving over to a chip and pin system. unfortunately it's not quick enough. >> reporter: video says to get online as much as possible to check every transaction, find a problem, contact your bank right away. >> i work hard for my money. i don't want nobody else getti g my money. >> staples knew of a poe tennessee shall break in objection they confirmed that

breach a little bit earlier tonight. >> david, what do people need to know to fine out if they've been affected? >> reporter: that's great question. you mentioned several in our area. go to cbsphilly.com. we have a list posted of those local stores if they still have questions and they shopped during the times of august or september at one of those stores, they can always call their bank just to be 100% sure that they are not a victim. >> david spunt for us in south philadelphia tonight. david, thank you very much. a man is now facing criminal charges accused of falsely reporting a siting of the money county spree killer bradley stone. police say that this man luke sander land told them on monday night that a man who looked like stone tried to carjack him near the stoning ton farm apartments in doylestown. now that was during the height of an urgent manhunt for stone. and now investigators say that sander lynn made up that story. >> alerts were put out for a 5-mile radius.

the y, doylestown hospital, central bucks west were shut down. and put under lock down, and obviously a very substantial amount of public resources were deployed. >> stone of course was wanted for killing six people in montgomery county. his ex-wife and five of her relatives. police eventually found his body in the woods nears his pennsburg home. >> new tonight, hundreds take to the streets in a show of support for police in philadelphia and across the country. they told "eyewitness news" reporter natasha brown why it was so important for them to be there. >> reporter: the blaring sound of car horns helped to support a spirited rally in northeast philadelphia. 250 people gathering to show support for police officers. dona event. >> having people, just regular, you know, i don't want to say nobodies but regular people to come out and tell the positive stories despite race, creed, anything like that.

and just share the stories. >> the support we get from the police is unbelievable. >> reporter: by one by residents gave testimonials about how police officers have impacted their lives. some letting their sign do's the talking. a showing that brought this retired police officer to tears. >> i was going to go up there and make a speech i'd get too emotional. it was like -- >> these police officers go out and kiss their families goodbye. you don't know if they're coming home again. you know, you have a lot of good ones. you got a lot of bad ones. the good ones are the ones you got to pull out of the claude. >> all lives matter. all lives matter! >> this rally come olding on the heels of rallies in philadelphia and around the country protesting grand jury decisions not to indict police officers in cases in ferguson missouri and new york. also, coming just hours after disturbing graffiti was discovered in west philadelphia reading "cops lives don't matter". other messages found condemn the killing of brandon tate brown had was shot and killed by police on monday in mayfair

after police say he was reaching for a gun at a traffic stop. >> i want to thank all the police that are out there. >> this gathering and this one in port richmond also supporting officers like others came under the cloak of protection provided by police. >> community group like any other protest and demonstrations we've handled throughout the past month and a half or throughout the year at any point in time. everybody has the right to express themselves and their first amendment right of being out who are. we're going to -- this is no different. >> reporter: police say this was a peaceful rally. no incidents to report. just a gathering of folks who wanted to show a appreciation for the men and women in blue who protect and serve their community. in mayfair, natasha brown cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> meantime in new york, demonstrators took to the streets in support of the nypd. but they were met with a rival demonstration by critics of police policies. the pro police rally was held as a counter point to the recent protests against police

brutality. there was new reaction tonight to this image posted on instagram by a philadelphia paramedic. it shows two black men pointing guns at a white man posing as a police officer. under the picture the paramedic wrote in part "our real enemy" i spoke to mayor nutter about this photo earlier today. >> it's offensive, and, you know, as much as we believe in the support of free speech i think it's also clear there are limits to speech or expression those kinds of actions. at any time that kind of posting would certainly be inappropriate as it relates to any of our police officers. >> the image is from music video made in protest of the deaths of michael brown and eric garner. the paramedic has since apologized for posting the image online. >> a cold night is on tap as we head into this first official weekend of winter. meteorologist kate bilo is in for kathy tonight and she's life on the cbs3 sky deck bundled up

against the cold. kate. chris, ooh wish i had a couple more layers here this evening. it is cold outside. although it's not uncan'tly cold it is late december and we're feeling just about how we should feel this time of the year but it's dry. no problems out here right now and it should stay dry through the weekend if you have any last minute christmas shopping to do, out and about or getting a jump on the holiday travel for next week, storm scan3 looking fine as we sweep the area even zooming out over portions of the northeast everything is looking quiet at the moment we're not seeing any rain, any snow in our area. a look what's going on temperature wise. you can see it is cold. skies have been clearing through the overnight hours it's 34 degrees in philadelphia. 34 in reading. we're down to 29 in lancaster and look at millville. interior south jersey is very cold. 22 degrees there right now. it feels even colder than the thermometer indicates and that's thanks to still a brisk wind outside feels like 21 in lancaster feeling like 24 in allentown and it feels like 19 right now in atlantic city.

so if you're out and about you definitely need to bundle up against the cold here this evening. first forecast for tomorrow morning it's dry but it's chilly. we'll start the morning below freezing. by 11am we're up to about 36 degrees for the daytime high we'll be in the low 40s. coming up we'll talk about again chilly but dry weekend then it turns wet next week and we'll have glimpse into your christmas travel forecast. the best time to go if you're traveling outside the area for the upcoming holiday. i'll have that all coming up. for now we'll zen it back inside to you. >> kate, thank you. >> there is a warning tonight from cherry hill police about pickpockets. police have released surveillance photos in four incidents victims credit cards were run up to $14,000. people were victimized at wegmans, bahamas breeze, panera and christmas tree shops. the first incident happened november 5th. the most recent on tuesday. authorities want to be extra cautious during your holiday shopping to avoid becoming a victim. police say women should hold their purses close to their bodies with the opening facing

toward them. also, avoid using revolving doors. they're a favorite of thieves with good timing. consolidate smaller purchase noose one bigger bag. and never leave those purchases unattended. one more thing. if you're shopping at night, ask a security officer to walk you to your car. >> tomorrow the family of missing college student shane montgomery is hosting a 5k run to help raise money to increase the $65,000 reward for information. no one has seen montgomery since early thanksgiving morning when he went drinking with friends in manayunk. runners will meet at 9:00 o'clock outside gold's fitness on main street in manayunk. free to run but those donations are encourage. >> well today the leader of the free world and the leader of sony pictures both weighed in on the alleged north korean cyber attack that cripple the film maker and derailed the release of a controversial new comedy. so what is next for that film and how will the us respond?

>> yes i think they made a mistake. president obama took sony pictures to task for its decision not to release the interview as planned next week. the seth rogen, james franco comedy about an assassination plot targeting the leader of north korea was the subject of a terrorist threat and a cyber attack. the fbi now says that north korean government is responsible for the hack. >> i wished they had spoken to me first. i would have told them do not get into a pattern in which you're intimidated by these kinds of criminal attacks. >> but on cnn sony pictures ceo michael linton said sony had been in contact with the white house. and that the company has done everything it can. >> we have not caved. we have not given in. we have persevered and we have not backed down. we have -- we have always had every desire to have the american public see this movie. >> whatever happens with the movie the president says there will be real life consequences

"eyewitness news" was there at the salvation army shirley campus in philadelphia's wynnefield heights neighborhood. toys collected at numerous drop off locations around the region are also being sorted and they'll all be under trees just in time for christmas. now this is what really helped make it possible today. time lapse of our toy drop off here at cbs3. we started at 6:00 a.m. we went through 8:00 o'clock tonight. the truck started out empty. it filled up as the day went on. in fact we had to make more room. we had so many toys. so a big thank to you you, to our partners, our sponsors, we just couldn't have done it without everyone. what a great day it was to be part of this terrific campaign. >> so fun when we can all come together. great to meet of you who dropped off the toys. huge thank you to you and we know that a lot of kids will have big smiles on their face. >> whole staff was out there. kate was out there, beasley was out there kate really something to be special to be a part of

that far off for this time of the year, it's partly sunny making the trip to see the eagles play tomorrow afternoon chilly bundle up, 38 degrees at kickoff but at least it's dry as eagles take on the redskins tomorrow at 4:30. what we want to neck week especially christmas eve. here's wednesday. storm moves through very warm storm so this is rain. but it's heavy rain on christmas eve. we'll try to clear things out by christmas day but again it looks like a soaking rain on wednesday. snow will stay pretty far inland and it turns blustery christmas day if you traveling around the northeast, christmas day looks a little bit of a wintry mess here cleveland, pittsburgh right up toward buffalo but it should be dry here in philadelphia and in washington, d.c. if you're plan something christmas travel, best time to go between tomorrow and monday it will be sunny, school and dry. yellow light here with a few showers around. wednesday probably not a day you want to travel try to get there early. you don't want to be on the road or even in the skies on wednesday. that's when we'll have the rain and wind. temperatures in the low 40s this weekend.
