♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> a city in mourning. two murdered new york city police officers are honored at a candlelight vigil in brooklyn. meantime we are learning a lot more about the gunman and his long criminal history. good evening everyone.

i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. authorities say the 28-year-old ismaaiyl brinsley shot his he can girlfriend in baltimore before traveling by bus to new york. sherry mines in critical condition. tonight police say there are still many unanswered questions. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette is in brooklyn with the latest. ♪ >> reporter: there were songs and prayers at a candlelight vigil sunday evening held at the intersection in brooklyn where two police officers were ambushed and killed saturday afternoon. local minister kierston john foy says those who are divided need to put aside their differences after months of conflict and protests against police. >> we need to show the world that this is not who we are as a community, that we appreciate the sacrifice of our police officers. >> reporter: memorial at intersection continues to grow with many flowers, candles and signs left behind. this is where 28-year-old ismaaiyl brinsley fired four shots at 40-year-old raphael

ramos and 32-year-old wenjian liu before killing himself. police described brinsley as troubled man with a decade long criminal record who tried to commit suicide as recently as year ago. hours before the shooting he posted on social media that he was going to put quote wings on pigs and referred to the deaths of eric garner and michael brown. and right before he opened fire, police say he told people, watch what i'm going to do. >> i hope and pray that we can reflect on this tragic loss of life that has occurred so we can move forward. >> reporter: bunting draped over the door of the precinct where the officers worked and flags are flying at half staff. wendy gel let for cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> the reaction to these murders is garnering nationwide attention dan philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsay weighed in. >> i mean it wasn't like a high-risk operation or something when you know that you're really putting your live at risk.

just sitting in the car maybe just looking out of the window and then all of a sudden someone comes up and just murders you, i mean, yeah, that's enough to make you angry. it just doesn't make any sense at all. >> philadelphia mayor michael nutter also released a statement in the killings saying in part "we americans must acknowledge that we have a clear problem with violence in our can he country. we must all commit to pathway of non-violence, citizens and police officers alike, as we participate in the civic life of our communities and nation ". a florida police officer meantime is killed after respo responding to a noise disturbance. authorities say 45-year-old officer charles couldn't deck was shot and then run over. he was a member of the tar upon spring force for 17 years after first work fog the inform ypd. marco antonio perry, jr., has been charged with first degree murder at this time. investigators do not believe the officer's death had anything to do with the killings of the two police officers in new york ci

city. >> new tonight a planned protest marches through the streets of center city philadelphia. hundreds participated in the blackout philly march in response to what organizers call police brutality and racial tension around the country. participants started at 15th and arch. circled around city hall and continued on down the parkway ending at the art museum steps. police say the protests remained peaceful. and there's some new information tonight in the search for college student shane montgomery. today authorities recovered his keys in the schuylkill river. they searched the water in manayunk for 4.5 hours. that was the only piece of evidence that was discovered. montgomery was last seen 25 days ago leaving kildare's bar on thanksgiving morning. surveillance video later showed him walking in the direction of the schuylkill river. >> and it is official everyone winter has arrived but this week it may not feel like it at all. meteorologist justin drabick is tracking quite a warmup and rain as we head into this christmas week.

justin. that's right, natasha. temperatures going well above average as we head into christmas eve. however, though, big storm will bring rain chances that could impact your holiday travel coming up but until then, it's dry, it's cold tonight. look at those temperatures at or below freezing in many spots. suburbs 29 in allentown. 26 degrees currently in millville, new jersey, some of the northern suburbs 27 degrees in quakertown. 23 chilly degrees in pottstown this hour. reason we have clear skies over us right now but clouds will start to move from the south overnight into tomorrow. so temperatures should level off over the next few hours. we'll talk about rain chances returning later tomorrow evening and certainly through christmas eve. so morning temperatures on monday dress warm. waking up everyone is below freezing even here in center city philadelphia. looking at a low tonight of around 28 degrees. here's your monday forecast clouds will be on the increase still cool for this time of year watch out for a few late day showers they're going to be light high temperature near 40 degrees. lower 40s at the shore.

"eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers tells us about the couple police are now looking for. >> reporter: she didn't want to let him in but police say leonard bernard forced his way into a 76 yeared woman's home any way. here in a normally quiet neighborhood in exton. >> he slapped her at one time and before he left he pushed her to the ground. that's when he tied her up. >> reporter: he had come to her door pretending to be with a home health service she'd used in the past. his victim tied up on the floor bernard allegedly went room to room stealing about $10,000 worth of jewelry. >> you go in there at 6:15, you know, oh and saturday night when likelihood there's people out seeing things they go in there and brazen would be the word.

>> reporter: he left the the vick at this time tim quickly called 911. police soon discover his girlfriend brianna mitchell used to be an in home caretaker for a victim. a search warrant was he can cuted at mitchell's home and the stolen items were recovered. >> we went in. there was nobody there. we went into the master bedroom all laid out the bed was the victim's jewelry and. >> this neighborhood meanwhile a bit on edge. neighbors telling neighbors to be on alert. >> stay out on watch. that's something like that happened, um, keep your doors locked. be aware. be cautious. >> reporter: and police say they have spoken over the pope with the female suspect in this case. they say they have urged her to turn herself in. but so far no luck. we're in west whiteland township, matt rivers cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> a domestic dispute may have sparked a shooting at mcgee's pub in the northeast just after midnight a 23-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his arm while sitting inside the bar at cottman and cottage.

15 minutes after police arrived a second person fired shots at officers standing outside. no officers were hurt. and that man was arrested. police are still searching for the other shooter in this case. flames ripped through an apartment complex in new castle county, delaware. killing one person injuring another and now leaving more than three dozen people homele homeless. costs to repair the damage could exceed $1 million. "eyewitness news" reporter syma choudhry tells us how residents are coping with this loss just before christmas. >> i was like speechless. i was just looking and crying. >> reporter: this man lost everything he owned after a fatal fire ripped through his apartment building. the fire started around 2:30 sunday morning at the harbor house apartments in claymont. firefighters found one person dead in one of the units. another person was taken to christiana hospital. luckily for his man he escape the fire with his wife and 10 month old baby and only the clothes on their back. >> i was looking from here. my apartment was burning.

everything is burning. my tears came out. very tough. >> reporter: the two harm fire started in one apartment on the third floor. spread to the attic and threw two to another building. firefighters arrived within minutes but were overwhelmed to see how quickly the flames spread. >> we definitely were behind the eight ball before we even got on location. >> reporter: firefighters were able to get the fire under control around 5:30. they stayed at the scene hours later to put out hot spots that flared up. about 40 people are left homeless. the red cross is assisting 10 families in their time of need. >> it's amazing how resilient people are after a fire. these people will be resilient. >> reporter: for choudhry it will be difficult to pick up the pieces especially with the holidays around the corner. >> it's right before christmas. it's tough. tough to believe. >> reporter: fire marshal is investigating. so far no word on what caused this fire. in claymont delaware, shy ma choudhry, cbs3 "eyewitness new
