in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> now at 11:00 an unusual holiday storm instead of dealing with the cold and snow, it's a warm, wet and foggy christmas eve and the rain isn't out of here yet. storm scan3 shows lingering showers around the region. good evening to you, i'm jessica dean. chris may is off tonight. it's the night before christmas and we continue to keep an eye on this holiday storm. we have live team three covera coverage. justin finch is monitoring travel but we begin with kate bilo. >> the night before christmas and all across the region the rain keeps on falling. especially here in western i can't keep going with the royal there but you can see another round of this is headed our way. we're not out of the woods yet. we do have showers that have developed across portions of southern new jersey into delaware. right around two, 3am that the next batch of steady rain will come through and even perhaps a few rumbles of thunder along

with it. now visibles have gotten much much better for now. we're seeing visibles around 10 miles in philadelphia. trenton, millville. atlantic city and wildwood still just over a mile. we have 2.5-mile visibilities in lancaster so as this next round comes through the visibility cos drop again and watch for pockets of dense fog. here's 4:00 a.m. and you can see a steady rain across much of the area and once again because temperatures are just so warm right now 63 here at the cbs broadcast center we can't rule out rumble of thunder maybe it will be santa's reindeer on the rooftop either way, it's going to be a little bit of a noisy evening out there with the rainfalling and by seven or 8am the rain has moved off. the edge of the the cloud deck starts to move through the see around 8:00 a.m. and sunshine take over through the majority of our christmas day. so that's got news. much brighter looking day for your christmas. let's take look at temperatures you can see just how warm it is. at 62 degrees at the airport. 63 in wilmington. and 63 in dover. this time of the year we should be in the 30s at this time of

the night especially so it is warm enjoy it while it lasts because temperatures start to drop again through the seven day forecast. i'll have that and more coming up. jessica? >> kate, thank you. from delayed and canceled flights at airports to hours long traffic jams and road closures, this weather is causing headaches for holiday travels eye all around the nation and right her at home. we experienced some of the longest delays at philadelphia international airport. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch is live there tonight with the latest. justin? >> reporter: jessica, yes, the fog and rain made a mess of travel plans today at philadelphia international airport and across the country. flight aware.com reporting 253 delays here at phl and 40 cancellations and as of day winds down, it appears the worst of the travel day is over. at the airport arrivals gate and sometimes lively hug, christmas

eve travel. she, her husband and their triplets just flew in from sacramento by way of washington, d.c. where fog and rain led to an hour long lay over. >> we expect things are going that be a little crazy so, you know, just travel season and it's holiday season but it was fine. >> in all, smooth travels at 30th street station but there were weather related train delays. some longer than one hour. >> traffic doesn't seem bad. weather doesn't seem a lot like christmas, but we're excited to be traveling. >> reporter: so no snow this year, but lots of rain and mild temperatures. the kind of forecast some say is more fitting somewhere else. >> it's to warm. feels like we're in florida right now. >> at least christmas there's the possibility of snow showers in ohio. >> that's where alvin thomas and his daughter are driving. he knows the way there and the weather he's due for along the way. >> bad. possible thunderstorms. rain on the way. winds up to 22, 24 miles an hour.

for a nine hour drive. >> reporter: police are urging drivers like alvin to be careful. in montgomery county, several crashes were reported on route 422 in lower pottsgrove. the injuries are mostly minor but the crashes are being blamed on ponding in the westbound lanes due to heavy rainfall. flights into and out of the country's major airports appear to be close or on schedule as of this time. however, charlotte north carolina is the major exception. delays there backed up about an hour and 35 minutes on average. we are live at philadelphia international airport, i'm justin finch cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> justin, thank you. whether you're traveling near or far this holiday stay one step ahead of the forecast by downloading the cbs philly weather app. it's now available in google play and i tunes. breaking news in olney. part of a two-family home has collapsed tonight. this is video from the 100 block of roosevelt boulevard. police tell us five adults were inside when this happened.

everyone is out of the home now. we do know two people were taken to the hospital. "eyewitness news" spoke with w who says she lives inside. that was i was just hanging inside and i heard loud boom. that's it. then i look out the win do and we came down. i came down, and that's when we wouldn't come back in the house. >> it's not clear tonight what caused that home to collapse. new tonight, several families in a chester county neighborhood are devastated after thieves broke into their homes and stole their christmas gifts. police are hunting for the burglars in paoli. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt tells us in one case, a man is missing much more than a present. >> lived here 40 something years you don't expect an old house hook this to be robbed are rob. >> reporter: paul zimmer and his wife bash are woke up wednesday morning to find most of their christmas gifts gone. >> i saw that a lot of the gifts were missing. there wasn't anything there. >> reporter: they live in this quiet paoli enabled. found out quickly one or several

thieves picked this lock on their back door and made it into the house in the middle of the night. >> we looked down towards the woods and there was a pile of goods down there. we realized something was a mi miss. >> reporter: the thieves left some of her christmas gifts including clothes in this alley hyped her house. the more expensive gifts gone. >> they knew the jewelry boxes because even though they were wrapped, they took all the jewelry the watches and earrings and that sort of thing. >> reporter: paul and barbara zimmer are understandably upset but they tell me they really feel for one of their neighbors. someone who lost something bigger than few presents. his 2008bmw. >> took all the presents. got in my car and took my car. >> reporter: david scudder lives in the same neighborhood. he also locked all of his doors, but says thieves were able to open one of his windows most of his kids christmas gifts are also begun.

>> for the people that stole them, i would have given the presents to them if they were that desperate for it. not good. >> reporter: both the scudders and zimmers tell "eyewitness news" their glad they're safe but both families are still mad about what happened. >> violated. because not only our privacy was inn fringed upon but you spend a lot of time picking out gifts and wrapping them. >> reporter: in paoli david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> again that missing car is a 2008 black bmw with a pennsylvania plate hrh4478. if you have any information, call police. new tonight camden county home burns on christmas eve. the flames broke out at the home on estates road in pine hill shortly before 7:00 o'clock tonight. the family wasn't home at the time but they did lose their dog in that fire. an ems worker was finishing a call when he saw the flames and

called 911. >> tried to knock down the door. on officer came and knocked down the back door. so sorry, christmas eve. >> the cause of that fire now under investigation. no injuries were reported. four people are hurt after an suv slams into the lobby of a nursing home in new castle county. this happened at the coax berry village nursing home. an 8984 old man is in critical condition after being pinned against a wall in that building. three others suffered minor injuries. no word yet and what caused that crash. >> the search is on tonight for driver who hit and killed a woman in northeast philadelphia and then drove away. police say theresa pozzi was hit by a truck as she tried to cross state road in holmesburg. tonight her family had message for the people who tried to help the 33-year-old and for the person who hit her. >> these women or men whoever were there to not leave her

alone, thank you for the person who knew they clearly hit her you are heartless. you are cruel. and god will make his way to you. whoever you are. >> investigators are looking at surveillance video from the area to find that truck. they describe it as a late '80's or early '90's dark colored pick up or tow truck. it's now missing a health. anyone with information should call 911. developing now officials at the cdc say a lab technician is now being monford tour possible expo shower to the ebola virus. officials say the person was working in a secure laboratory in atlanta and may have come into contact with a small amount of a live virus that was part of an ebola experiment. that person will now be monito monitored for 21 days. >> police in missouri have released a surveillance picture of teenager killed by an officer in st. louis suburb.

investigators say 18-year-old antonio martin pulled a gun on that officer outside of a gas station. police say surveillance video captured the moment it happened. the officer then opened fire and killed martin. the shooting drew protests in an area where emotioning are already high after the police shooting of another black teen michael brown in august. islamic state fighters have captured a jordan yann pilot after his war plain crashed in syria while carrying out air strikes today. isis released photos of the pilot on social mode ya. in a statement, the us says, isis did not shoot down the plane as they initially claimed. the statement did not site a cause for that crash. there are concerns tonight about that pilot's safety. isis militants have beheaded three americans and several other hostages. >> the interview is now playing. the controversial film is available on demand and will be in some theaters tom. the film that led to the scene knee cyber attack will open at

block of spring garden street tonight. gifts were also given out to the kids there. >> it was really awesome that as i was up there serving food i got to watch them open the gifts. they have no idea who it came from and that's the best part about it to see how happy they were. >> chosen 300 will also serve holiday dinner at its west philadelphia location on lancaster avenue friday. police in camden delivered an extra dose of holiday cheer. joined by santa they surprised one family with furniture, food, toys, even a christmas tree. police say they had gone to the home earlier this week for did he nation event and noticed that family was greatly in need. they decided to reach out to the community and collect more donations to make the holiday brighter. santa making his way through the fog tonight and meteorologist kate bilo is tra tracking his progress. a lot of people interested in that and also the christmas for cast. kate. >> jessica, i have to say if kids are not in bed yet you want

cbsphilly.com/watchers. you can see the ben franklin bridge. you can actually see it now. a few hours ago we couldn't. it was completely shrowded in fog so things have gotten better at the moment. and santa may still need that fog light but he's got one take look tracking santa at the moment last seen in ottawa ontario canada next stop water town, new york. he's crossing back over the border and then will make another pass up and down the east coast to deliver those presents to kids once they're in bed. we're continuing to sweep the area on our doppler radar here in philadelphia. right now not seeing santa. he's just out of the vicinity up in water town, new york. we continue to look for santa. he's here delivered over 4 billion presents already. busy in it for that guy. he deserves a break. storm scan3 as we sweep the region you can see showers down the shore right now. but another batch of rape is waiting in the wings. it's right there. it's going to move through as this large scale storm finally makes its way toward the coast and eventually out of here just in time for christmas day. right now 62 at the airport. 63 in wilmington. temperatures well above average today.

near a record so far 63 the record is 64. so one more batch of rain to deal with that comes through right around four or 5am and clears out just in time for sunrise for many of us. and then threw our christmas afternoon, we clear it out. the sun returns and it will be blustery with that storm departing and high pressure building in. winds could gust to 35 miles per hour. overnight period of rain, foggy and breezy. watch for some slow down low visible overnight clear the out for christmas gusty winds, 53 degrees winds gusting to about 35 miles per hour. so we'll actually start christmas just after midnight with temperatures in the 60s. that will be the official high for the day but temperatures will drop through the afternoon. it's going to be right around 50 in the after -- late afternoon hours and by 7:00 o'clock we're at 46. so your "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast, well as you can see temperatures heading on their way up as we head through the end of the week and into the weekend. saturday 54. then we it out early neck week back at the 40s. stay there.
