pope francis recently made a revelation. he told new parents he was baptized on this day, christmas, 78 years ago. >> the pope also talked about gifts this season. he asked catholics to become the missionaries of joy. he asked people not to worry about the holiday rush, but, quote, i think of all the good things life has given you. >> archbishop kerts, thank you. >> thank you. by the way, merry christmas. >> and to you as well. >> thank you, thank you. >> why is joy crucial to our lives? >> well, don't you think people recognize the joyful person and want to hang around them? i mean that's not an accident. >> is that what this pope's success about is about? >> think it is. i think it is.

i hope there are many people in people's lives that say this person is a joy. our holy father is someone who comes through who's living a simple life. there's not a sense he's acting out cement. he's acting out joy. i think he lives in the present moment. you can just see it. there's a spontaneity with him. that attracts everybody. gospel of joy. >> he's so authentic. that's the thing that gravitates, i think, to people. >> we met october 4th, the feast of saint francis, great day, his patr patron saint. we met for about 45 minutes. he emanated joy. he had time for us. what did we want to talk about, and i wanted to talk about his visit. >> his visit to america. >> it will be his first. i hope you're all getting anxious. i hope you're as excited as i

am. >> he'll come in the fall of 2015 and start in philadelphia. >> i don't know that he'll start in philadelphia but the main presence will be felt in philadelphia, norah, you're right. >> what can we expect when he comes here? >> he'll be meeting with us over the world of families. this will be a great time for people to come together in philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, in order to renew our commitment to family. you and i know that we're in the midst of the synod, so it will be days before the general synod begins. so we're hoping he'll give a shot in the arm toal of us with regard to family. >> remind us of what the synod is? >> very few times that the church has doubleheader. the last synod, this last october, was the challenges of the family. now the synod coming up is

talking about the mission and vocation of family to the world and to the church. >> this comes from a new biography of him. they call him a bit of a radical. >> yes. >> we know of his identification with the poor and his emphasis on being pastoral. this is what he says. dynamic, disconcerting leadersh leadership. which while delighting catholics and attracting people beyond the boundaries of faith has dismayed and disconcerted a number of christians in church. >> he's talking about getting back to the gospel. here it is christmas day. getting rid of all the wrapping paper, so to speak, and getting to the core message which is as our holy father said, it's the message of the love of jesus and the mercy that he shows to each one of us and that we need to show to others.

i think that's the radical nature of what he's about. and, of course, he comes with a style. i've been reading that book to try to understand more. >> what have you understood? >> i think the fact that he sees the person first. he has often said -- he says it in the joy of the gospel. he said he favors realities over ideas. he's a smart man. i think he doesn't want to get so far away and argue about ideas that you miss the person in front of him. >> it's so interesting that you say that because he sees the person first. i think that's what people are struck by. whether you're gay, whether you're divorced, people who have been ostracized from the catholic church, the pope seems to be extending his arms to them. >> he does, norah. one of the things he uses -- i don't know if he would use the word "art," but the art of

accompaniment. what does it mean to be accompanied, especially when you're hurting. when i was ordained in 1972, i didn't know it was accompanied. they entered into the lavs of people and they accompanied them on a path to christ. >> is it possible because there's so much emphasis on him doing, that because it reminds us that jesus was a radical that the church had forgotten that a bit? >> why do i need a retreat every year. and i need it. why? because i need to return to the rooting. i imagine that's true of all of you in journalism, that you need to -- >> we need a lot of things. >> but what brought you to the true message. i think a pope in a sense -- i think pope francis as a

pontificate has been a big treat for me. it's called me to go back and-to-what's most basic and important in my own life and i think that's what's attracting people. >> you know, we focus on what's so different from one another, we focus on political parties, people focus on different gender, different races, different religions. certainly we have conflict all over the world, instead of focusing on how much people are alike. >> i think that's right. the pope says, listen, i'm a son of the church. in the truth of christ. but in doing that, wasn't it jesus who saw the person first and front. even someone who was in a very sinful situation. zwries said, now go out and sin no more. he never said that when he first talked.

i think that's what pope francis is saying. the rule is the role of the holy father is to serve and our role is to assist him. i hope when i go back to louisville, kentucky, i can serve. i want to get back to the very roots of what the church is about. our mission is to present jesus christ to the new age. >> never a better time to celebrate than christmas. >> oh, especially when you look at the fact that christmas slows us down. it makes all of us, i think, think about others. i celebrate on christmas day the mass of the air. i often think -- it's a mass that goes on in louisville in which people are maybe living alone but they're somehow joined that day to the church. so i think in some ways it does bring us to the deep ministries of life and maybe makes is a

correspondent wynton marsalis. >> reporter: when you watch patricia mcbride dance, you can almost feel her joy. passion radiates from the point of her toes to the tips of her fingers. she danced in more than 100 ball lies throughout her career. those created by the jeans george val enchin were the most glorious. he was the innovator for the 20th century and he was her muse. >> joined. he was a father figure for me. the man i most admired and loved and wanted to do well for him. when you dance, it takes a lot of stamina. it never seemed like work because i always loved doing it. it was always a joy. you know, to have beautiful ballets made especially for you

is such an honor. i always said it was better than diamond. >> reporter: patty was just 18 when she became new york city's youngest principal dancer ever. shy yet tireless, her worth ethic unmatched. valenchin taught her and her dance partners taught her even more. >> what did you learn from your partner? what did you give them? >> it was extraordinary because i was 17 when i danced with him. we were both young but i had seen him dance and he was already a star. so he was just so gentle and wonderful and kind. we had a great rapport together. he's one of the most exciting dancers of our day. >> now in new york city, we're very proud of our new york city ballet and i think you'll

understand why when you watch these two. >> i danced also with so many extraordinary partners at the time. conrad was an extraordinary partner. >> why? >> he just was -- we called him the greatest partner because he just knew what a woman's balance was. >> give us education. teach all the men out here. what does it take to be a great partner. >> to be sensitive to your partner, communicating with her, knowing her balance, knowing the pirouettes, the timing, the rigrig rhythm. it takes two to tango. two to work. >> in 1970 they danced together. although they only dance add handful of times three years later they formed patty's most enduring partnership a marriage

and later a family. give us some understanding of what's the secret? what is the magic? >> well, when you're in love with someone, what could be better. i never thought i would end up mairing a dancer and it just came as such a surprise and a wonderful surprise. it takes a lot of work to stay married. it's not easy. but i found my soulmate and he's been so supportive of me all these years. >> that's beautiful. that looks so good. >> reporter: today they partner in running their own ballet company, the charlotte ballet where patty passes on her memos that are part of her dna. while dancers can only dream of achieving the height of mcbride's career, now cull money nated into being an esteemed

kennedy center honoree. >> you've been honored many times. what has been the greatest reward? >> it's with such great respect. to be an artist in america and be honored for it, it's extraordinary. in europe they really honor their artists on a very high level, and here it's not as reverent as it is in euro or russia or never in the world. it's especially important for the arts. it was a dream. >> when you come back here, what do you think about? >> happy memories. and it looks the same. >> reporter: it's been more than 50 years since patricia mcbride first danced on this stage. with a long decorated career, she danced in 60 principle

roles, dedicated for her. when she decided to dance for the last time, the city gave her a farewell fit for a queen along with 13,000 roses. >> was it dramatic for you when you thought i want to keep doing it? >> no, not at all. i had danced for 30 years. i loved what i was doing. i did it all. i had danced over 100 ballets. i was actually 47 when i stopped. i had a life i never dreamed i'd have, you know. it was better than any dream i could have imagined. >> i don't know much about ballet but one of the people i

>> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". good morning, i'm erika von tiehl. one of the area's favorite annual event takes place in just a few hours in bucks county. it is the annual re-enactment of washington crossing the delaware, costume reenactors will listen to the inspiring words from george washington, then, relive the daring and dangerous crossing from christmas night 1776. the fest i have tis begin at noon at washington crossing state park, in bucks county. and katie it, sounds like they'll do pretty well with the forecast, don't have to wear too heff a coat. >> definitely still very mild for the standards. it will be windy, into the afternoon, but that's really the one and only weather-related factor we'll have to deal with at that point. sunglasses wouldn't be worse idea either. after some very dreary

weather, seeing the back edge now, of our wet weather, and the cold front, making it full retreat. and look how it is brightening up. so, so nice to see this on christmas morning. 42 degrees currently outside pleasant valley, broads heads ville, starting to see a lot of blue sky off in the distance here, we take you through the forecast, already hit the daytime high of 53. temperatures will gladly decline. will stay windy, as well. with gusts that could peak as high as 40 miles per hour. breezy colder tonight, good excuse to break out your christmas sweater if maybe you open one up for the holiday this morning, meanwhile, the course of the next few days, more sunshine in this forecast, looks lovely tomorrow, saturday, still above average on the thermometer, come sunday, it does appear like we'll have few showers in the forecast, especially to the second half of the day, then by monday colder air will finally catch up to us, and we're back into seasonable territory highs at best into the low or mid 40's, even wednesday, in you years eve, looking little on the chillier side, right now, we are calling for at least some sunshine, and temperatures that are into the 30's.
