in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> a christmas delivery. two septa transit officers rush to help a woman in labor on subway train. eighths holiday they'll never forget. but first a windy christmas day across the region leading that a chilly night. quiet evening in center city as the holiday draws to a close. good evening to you and merry christmas. i'm jessica dean. chris may has the night off. despite the wind it was a relatively mild christmas day but those temperatures are beginning to fall outside. meteorologist kate bilo is live on the sky deck with a first look at what you can expect in the morning. kate. >> jessica, feeling a whole lot colder on the sky deck. i was just thinking yesterday just had the raincoat. you barely even needed a coat yesterday at this time as temperatures were in the 60s. we actually got to 65 in the middle of the night but now temperatures are dropping through the 40s and eventually landing in the 30s. let's take look outside on storm

scan3. you can see the front that came through yesterday way out to sea now. that is moving quickly and high pressure is building in. so as that storm moves further and further away from us, the pressure gradient slackens a bit more and we start to see high pressure build in as that pressure grade yen weakens the winds will weaken as welch stale bit breezy let's call it brisk out here tonight. certainly not as windy as it was earlier today. let's take a look at temperatures and again dropping pretty quickly. 40 degrees at the airport. that's down about 5 degrees in the past hour. 41 in allentown right now. 39 in reading. we're already down to a chilly 37 in millville and 34 right now in lancaster actually colder in lancaster than it is in mount pocono at the mommy. current winds starting to become little mr. variable. not that direct northwest wind we felt earlier today. more of a westerly flow. winds between five and 10 miles an hour but not a lot of gusts and that's good news. peak wind gust got quite high. 42 miles per hour in atlantic city. got to 40 miles per hour in mount pocono and 40 miles per hour as well in philadelphia. let's take a sneak peek into the

that comes. >> we delivered a baby for her so it's christmas present like a blessing an present for myself. this is the first time i experienced something like this. >> we're told mother and child were taken to hahnemann hospital to get check out. >> there is no shortage of things to do in philadelphia even on christmas night. plenty of people out and about this evening including our diana rocco who caught up with some families enjoying the night. >> merry christmas everybody. >> reporter: presents have been opened and christmas dinners have been eaten. we found lots of skaters rocking the christmas car carols as center city ice rink as they worked off those bill holiday meals. >> we just came over to visit our aunt. >> how is the ice skating. >> really good. >> we're here from florida. ice skatin skating in philadelpa having a nice christmas definitely. >> celebrating hanukkah. a great thing for us odd on christmas. >> she and her boys were many families enjoying a night out in the city.

>> we're probably going to head for chinese food after this. and some more family time, right, boys? >> we went to frankford park to see the light show there. >> christmas night walnut street was quiet with many stores taking a breather. seratone in a one of the few restaurants open for dinner. >> we have a phenomenal turn out all day. a lot of people liked to a late afternoon move 52 and we a dom date later walk ins but we've had people all day long enjoying themselves and enjoy the holiday. >> in chinatown, streets are buzzing and restaurants crowded. many say it's a christmas tradition. >> we seem to always come to chinatown for christmas because it's always open and vibrant and we celebrate hanukkah. we need to find a place to eat gone see a movie. >> the theaters are busy and so were the wells fargo center for the opening night of the popular frozen on ice. >> walnut street may be quite christmas night but the sales signs are up as stores are getting ready for what's sure to be a busy friday with people spending those christmas gift

cards and making returns. in center city, i'm diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> meanwhile christians throughout the delaware valley celebrated the holiday by gathering with family and friends at local churches. ♪ >> hundreds attended christmas mass here at cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul in philadelphia. archbishop charles chaput was there to help lead the service. at the vatican, pope francis delivered his christmas blessing to tens of thousands of wop shippers were saint peter's square and spoke about several international issues and prayed for peace in the middle east. africa and ukraine. it was his second christmas blessing at pope. after much debate over the sony hacking scandal, the movie the interview is being shown in select number of theaters today. one of those theater social security in wilmington, delaware. a valet walked over to her. she allegedly grabbed his cell ton out of his hasn't. sped away hitting another valet with her vehicle. that valet suffered head injuries. simons faces several charges and being held on $100,000 bail. >> the florida developer in line to buy the revel casino wants some of his money back. lawyers for glenn straub filed court papers saying the property should only be sold for $87 million, not the knife million dollars runner up he initially put up. toronto based firm out bid him but back out over a dispute. straub says the auction was unfair and wants a judge to deduct a $3 million break up fee. >> "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt has this story. ♪ >> jingle bells, jingle all the way. >> reporter: it's christmastime once again for

dora cummings but this december 25 is this a little extra special. it marks over a century of christmas sell braces. >> i love christmas. 'cause i like presents. and we all have lots of fun getting ready for din are in. >> reporter: comings lived in the downington area since she was born. on february 26th, 1909. if you're counting, that's birthday number 106 just around the corner. >> she's lived a long happy happy life with lots of good family. >> reporter: and good memorie memories. spending more than a century. >> she loves christmas. she loves to sing. what she doesn't remember she makes up. (laughter). >> reporter: but family members say she seems to remember a lot. here she is with her husband. he died in 1959. >> we're learning a lot from her past now. she's starting to tell us stuff when she grew up and that's been

>> we wanted to wish you merry christmas and have nice holiday season. you can't have her back. >> high to all my family and friends back in philadelphia. i miss you guys and hope you have a great holiday season. >> former president george hw. bush remains in his stop hospital this christmas. he was admitted two days ago for shortness of breath. a family spokesman says the 90-year-old is in good spirits but didn't offer any other details. he said bush was visited by his wife barbara and son neal. volunteers at a shelter for philadelphia area military veterans are making sure local homeless vets got chance to enjoy the holidays. "eyewitness news" reporter charlotte huffman has the story. >> reporter: at the philadelphia veterans house homeless vets got a hot christmas dinner but many of them say what they enjoy the

most is the company. >> brings back the memories of being in the service and the comradery that we have here and being in a family actually. it's wonderful. extended family for me. i'm around vets, people who understand me and we understand each other, went all have common cause. >> reporter: bridget gallagher is executive director of the non hiv profit. >> holiday such as christmas where it's so important to have people around you that really love you, this is our opportunity to give them just that. a lot of these guys are coming off of the streets and being homeless not having their families around them. this is something that they really look forward to throughout the year. >> it means a lot. if you go down up to and see people standing around or sitting down who don't have a place to go and don't have a meal for the day, you know it makes me very grateful that i have something here that is helping me and i hope that some day i can return the help they gave me to someone else. >> reporter: it's a volunteer viv of driven operation with vets helping vets. >> together they collected hundreds of coats and blankets for today's clothes drive.

and ed green says if it weren't for them he'd be cold and hungry on the streets this christmas. >> i'd be on the streets like that, yeah. i mean this place is a lifesaver. >> with a full stomach and a bagful of warm clothes green headed back out on to the streets to try to stay warm through christmas night. organizers expect by the time the day is over, more than one hadn't dread veterans will have passed through these doors and the hope when they leave they'll know that they haven't been forgotten. charlotte huffman cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> holiday tra dig filled with american history took place in washington crossing today. "eyewitness news" was there for the annual reenactment of george washington's famous crossing of the delaware in 1776 before the battle of trenton. crowds gathered along the banks of the river to pay tribute to the major american revolutionary victor. >> it's what many of have donated 20 plus years of our lives to do this of year because we believe in it. we believe in the history of it.

we believe in teaching the public about it. and we want to make sure that this site is never forgotten. that this crossing by washington and his troops is never forgotten. >> organizers say more people turned out this year than last likely because of the nicer weather. president barack obama reflected on the afghanistan mission in this morning's christmas address. he asked americans to thank the troops. >> we're able to gather with family and friends because our troops are willing to hug theirs goodbye and step epp forward to serve. after a long day we can come home because their willing to leave their families and deploy. >> the president said the combat mission in afghanistan was com coming to a quote responsible end. the monthly holiday spirit spread through a few philadelphia animal shelters today. workers at the save me animal shelter in northern liberties treated their four legged friends to a special holiday meal and also some toys that had been donated over the past month. also today families visited the

animal care and control team in philadelphia which is always looking to find new homes for their cats and dogs. >> a lot of times we make it a family event today we have a big open house where people can make treats for the animals, cat toys, come together, take tour of the shelter. >> and if you're still thinking about adopt agnew pet this holiday season, good news. both shelters will be open again tomorrow morning. a wip dee christmas day out there. meteorologist kate bilo is tracking a actually night somebody sunshine. >> that's right. we had finally some sun out there today it feels like it had been awhile since we saw the sunshine but today turned out nice albeit a bit windy. the winds are dying down and we've got got sunshine heading into the weekend. our weather watchers have been septembering in their reports. they found time to do it. we'll start off at 40 degrees as we look live right now if we can pull it up who are this is my hometown of phoenixville, and this is thanks to tom. he's reporting 40 degrees and a

our live neighborhood network earlier today were quite strong at the howard pfeiffer middle school in pennsauken 27 miles an hour. broomall saint piu is x34 miles an hour. new castle county airport 37 miles an hour. >> storm scan3 shows clear skies and no problems across the northeast and as we zoom out nothing to talk about this large dome of high pressure is going to be centered over really the eastern part of the country as we head through the upcoming friday and saturday of this holiday weekend. a honk weekend for many people. temperatures right now respond to go that clear sky on clear night like tonight we've got cooler conditions certainly 39 in reading. 34 in lancaster. 40 right now at the philadelphia international airport. the high for christmas day a little misleading. i'll physical that you right now we talked about it yesterday. temperatures got to 65 degrees but that was set at 2:00 o'clock in the morning. so if you're thinking it really didn't feel like 65 out there this afternoon you're right. it wasn't. in the afternoon the low 50s but it will go down in the record books as a 65 degrees christmas

3 degrees off that record warmest christmas ever was back in 1964. sunshine and showers as we head into the weekend. the sunshine for the next two days friday and saturday. then on sunday this system starts to move through. showers especially in the afternoon but you can't rule them out tame. so through our overnight hours it's mainly clear. it's cold. certainly colder than last night when temperatures overnight were in the mid 60s. 36 degrees will be our overnight low. with a light breeze from the west. winds are really not an issue tomorrow. just a light wind. sunny skies and mild normal highs in the low 40s. we'll get to 50 degrees for the daytime high. here's your "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast, take look at how warm it is on saturday. what great day if anyone penn state fans like myself maybe heading up to new york city the pinstripe bowl on saturday after and in at yankee stadium can't really ask for much better weather a little bit cooler in new york but still in the low 50's. on sunday if you have tee degrees, clouds, a couple of showers. it colds colder -- it turns colder. monday 44.

♪ >> no matter where you go in the world, christmas is all about traditions and that goes for these guys, too. about 30 swimmers in germano braced the chilly water of berlin -- in berlin to celebrate christmas. they call themselves the berlin seals. this water was estimated to be 41 degrees and they're just hanging out there. the swimmers carry on the tradition on new year's day as well. no christmas nativity is complete without a donkey. the ancient animal still roam the street of egypt today and believe it or not there are people in cairo who groom donkeys and other animals for living. customers come from miles around to one grooming shop which is now three generations old. the own are in says many days
