people thursday for making threats against police. don champion has our report. >> reporter: the unimaginable pain was evident on the faces of the family of officer rafael ramos, carrying blue roses they visited a growing memorial in brooklyn, new york, christmas nice. thanking those who protect and service just as ramos had done when he was killed at the same spot last weekend. this woman raised her voice in song to pay tribute to the father of two. ramos and his partner, officer wenjian liu were shot and killed saturday by a man police say was mentally disturbed and intent on killing police officers. >> as much as they hurt, we hurt with them. >> reporter: in glendale queens, blue ribbons are on display for blocks along myrtle avenue to christ as tabernacle church where ramos' family will start to say good-bye. more than 20 thousand members of

law enforcement from across the u.s. and canada will come to new york city over the coming days to pay respect for ramos. many new yorkers hope things will remain peaceful, despite ongoing demonstrations. >> people yelling and screaming in their faces. i wouldn't be able to do what they do. i guf thive them a lot of credi >> reporter: in the wakes of the ramos and liu, authorities have increased security at station houses and arrested and charged several people thursday with making threats against officers. don champion, cbs news, new york. in oakland, california, thursday night, a protest against police tactics turned violence. demonstrators smashed windows in businesses, looted a liquor store and damaged a christmas tree. protesters blocked intersecti s intersections. their demonstrating against a series of deadly police encounters across the country. sony is facing the fallout

from another apparent hack attack this morning. families with playstations under the christmas tree were unable to use the game systems thursday. >> kept getting the same screen that says, trouble downloading, trouble downloading. and i always assume that's something i'm doing wrong. >> microsoft's xbox was also hit by the attack. disappointed users experienced connection problems on thursday. a group called lizard squad claimed responsibility. audiences are getting their first chance to see the movie at the center of an international controversy. "the interview" opened on more than 300 screens nationwide christmas wide. marlie hall reports from a theater in new york showing the come comedy. >> reporter: as moviegoers line up across the country to see "the interview" on the big screen, the reviews are pouring in. >> it's a funny movie.

>> reporter: fans took in a christmas screening of the seth rogen/james franco comedy about the plot to kill the head of north korea. sony scrapped the movie after terror threats but released the movie online and in independent theaters. >> it was worth the hype. it was worth waking up first thing in the morning. >> reporter: were you planning on seeing it anyways -- >> i probably was. i calm to support the artists and freedom of speech. >> reporter: 300 theaters, including cinema village, are screening "the interview". >> we're sold out for some shows. would he expect to be sold out for others. business has been brisk. >> reporter: he believes freedom of expression is worth it. >> i'm proud to be involved. i'm glad you're playing it. >> reporter: industry insiders expect the movie to earn less

than it would have before the controversy began. marlie hall, cbs news, new york. a cdc worker is facing a possible ebola infection this morning after an error at a government lab. researchers mistakenly allowed samples of the deadly virus to be handled in an insecure environment. julian julianna goldman reports. >> reporter: cdc is looking at the ebola. the technician who handled the sample was not adequately protected. cdc director tom frieden is promising action, the latest in a spring of pledges to upgrade safety inspect a statement he says, no risk to staff is acceptable. >> for this to happen and put our workers potentially at risk is totally unacceptable. >> reporter: that was frieden in july. it had just been revealed that cdc workers had accidentally com

contaminated flu samples with the deadly h5n1 virus, also known as bird flu. in june they admitted lab workers may have been exposed to anthrax. those samples had even been transferred between labs in ziploc bags. frieden promised sweeping measures to change the lax safety culture. the cdc put together a group of outside safety experts and even temporarily shut down some labs. the materials that potentially kantd live ebola in this latest accident were steroid before officials even discovered the problem. the cdc never got to test the actual specimen, so we may never know how big of a mistake this actually was. julianna goldman, cbs news, washington. a spokesman says george h.w. bush is in great spirits. he remains hospitalized this morning in houston where he's

being treated for shortness of breath. the 90-year-old was admitted tuesday. mr. bush is the oldest living former president. he suffers from parkinson's disease and has lost use of his legs. on the cbs "moneywatch," jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. >> good morning. here on wall street the markets reopen after the christmas holiday. the dow is over 18,000. it's at its highest level ever after gaining six points wednesday. the s&p was down less than a point and the nasdaq was up eight points. tokyo's nikkei added a fraction. hong song's hang seng is closed for the holiday. the minimum wage in washington state will soon be the highest in the nation. on january 1st washington's lowest legal wage will be $9.47

per hour. the bump in pay will affect more than 67,000 workers. walmart will exchange holiday gift cards from other stores. for the next few weeks, you can go online and turn in gift cards from 200 other retailers. walmart says it will give you up to 97% of the value. they will vary by the retailer. holiday sales were reportedly just meet industry predictio predictions. they say lower last-minute sales mean that stores will hit the estimate of just over a 4% increase from last year. today could bring a surge of shoppers for those after christmas sales. russian president vladimir putin has ordered a cap on vodka prices. they're about 30% higher than last year. he says expensive vodka encourages bootleg producers and he says illegal vodka carries greater risk to people's health than the legal product.

the sun on december 19th. the space agency experts say it was an x-class flare, the most intense category of solar eruptions. crude oil prices keep dropping and so do prices at the gasoline pump. that means some people in the oil industry are hurting, but it's a holiday gift for most people. anna werner reports. >> we're going this way. >> reporter: for this family, a drop in oil prices made a trip to new york for christmas possible. >> that's perfect. >> i think we have a greater expense budget now to come into the city. something that i really wanted to expose my 11-year-old to. >> reporter: but for people whose jobs depend on oil production, the talk is of layoffs and tough times ahead. in seminole, oklahoma, brian adams runs a sales shop where sales have already dropped 30%. >> almost every check in this town one way or another is affected by the oil company.

california. in sports, the clippers rally to beat golden state. in the first quarter los angeles missed 16 consecutive shots, shooting just 4 for 24. but l.a. came back led by jamal crawford's 24 points. the clippers beat the nba-leading warriors 100-86. lebron james got a nice welcome in his first game back in miami since leave fog are cleveland. james scored 30 points for the cavs. dwyane wade led the heat with 31 points as miami beat cleveland, 98-91. oklahoma city thunder beat the spurs 114-106. the thunder played without reigning mvp kevin durant, who was nursing a swor ankle. the spurs, the defending nba champs, have lost 5 of their last 6 games. and chicago crushed the lakers. pao gasol playing against his former team led the bulls with 23 points and 13 rebounds.

ago today. pope francis called for peace in his christmas message in st. peter's square. the pope condemned the brutal tactics of islamic state militants. he praised those helping ebola victims in west africa. he appealed for peace in the middle east and help for refugees and suffering of children around the world. an american is free from prison this more than in east timor. stacy addison of portland, oregon, was arrested in a drug case but was never charged. she was ordered to stay during an investigation. her mother says she is tremendously relieved and now just waiting for her daughter's passport to be returned so she can come home. one very lucky dog survived a fall from 15 stories high. sam, the 13-year-old boston terrier, suffered a few broken bones as he fell from one of the tallest buildings in sacramento, california.

starting next month the los angeles police department will start outfitting its officers with body cameras. as bob orr shows us, the cameras are already in action in one city. >> reporter: on a neighborhood street in palo alto, california, this officer pulls over a driver who runs a stop sign. this is the view recorded by his dash camera. but the rest of his cruiser's video system recorded much more. >> you'll see me stepping out of the vehicle. >> reporter: in palo aloe, every police car is equipped with multiple cameras that provide a multiple view. >> five cameras in every beat officer's patrol car that captures a 270-degree view

around the car. >> reporter: with this screen, this monitors all your cameras. can you isolate the one you want to see? >> correct. we can tap on any one of those and pull those up. >> reporter: one camera points forward. two side cameras cover blind spots. a prisoner camera covers the backseat. then the rear camera, which recorded this collision in august. the system captures up to 40 hours of video, which makes it possible for officers to go back in time. you literally might drive right past something that you don't see and go back later and say, hey, thofs important. >> the primary purpose is for us to preserve evidence to use in court later. >> reporter: it also for keeping tabs on how officers interact with the public. dennis burns is palo alto's police chief. >> accountability is a big part of this. >> we hire people for character. we want street people with
