5:31 am
>> yes, "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo live outside hahnemann hospital with details on how the officers came to rescue when the mom started going into labor on the subway, jan? >> on the subway, nicole, erika, every all places, talk about christmas miracle for this family, this mother, and baby boy, are here at hahnemann hospital this morning, we're told both in good condition. and as you mentioned, that's thanks in part to a couple of fast acting septa transit police officers. if you take a look at this video, you can see the entire special delivery, was caught on septa surveillance cameras. this is what happened on a septa train just after it arrives at the say and market station on christmas christmas , police got word over the radio that someone was in need as the cars were pulling in. and as the officers approached, concerned passengers told them a woman was in labor, so they sprung into action. and soon after, a healthy baby boy was in their arms safe and sound. >> i mean, we judge just there doing what we do, you know, just there to help people.
5:32 am
and then any kind of way shape or form that comes. >> we delivered a baby for her, so like her christmas present, but also like a blessing and present for myself. this is the first time i experienced something like this. >> definitely a christmas present for everyone, such a great outcome, and so great for those officers to spring into action, like they did. again, both baby and mother are here at hahnemann hospital in good condition. both of those officers are fathers themselves, but they say they've never gone through anything like this on the job. they say they're honored to be a part of the experience, but again, they were just doing their job. reporting live in center city this morning, jan carabeo, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". jan, thank you. coming up on 5:33, let's get traffic and weather together. how are we looking outside? >> not bad at all. >> this will ends up being just a nice day. it is quiet, lighter winds, full sunshine expected, and we get to keep that warmth around. and that comes courtesy of just really the way the flow of the atmosphere is setting up. a lot of times, when high pressure takes over, as it is
5:33 am
today, it will be moving in, perhaps, from northern location. but it is actually moving in a little bit further from the south. so, that basically means that it keeps that coldest air all the way up in canada. we don't have to worry about it. take you outside, show you what's going on, not heck of a lot, i have to till, on storm scan3, certainly not tracking any storms for at least the next few days, even little wider zoom. shows very thin vale of cloud cover back over western and northern pennsylvania, up into up-state new york, but, that is really it. even those locations are going to seymour sun than anything, as the day goes on, with high pressure taking the lead back. so noticing what happens to our temperatures, i mean, it is pretty evident that is a lot colder by comparison to this same time yesterday. but it would be hard not to beat those temperatures, because we actually ended up into the mid 60s right about the time santa was actually making his round. those temperatures as we know dropped off easily, through the course of the day, now you're 20 degrees colder by comparison, just from the last 24 hours. meanwhile, temperatures as they actually read on the thermometer, how does it
5:34 am
translate? thirty-five at the airport, in at 31 in ac, coldest spot interestingly enough even by comparison to mount pocono, still a really modest breeze, but it is still out there, so it may feel little bit cooler than the thermometer reads. overall what you see will be what you get out there on temperature readings today. with wall-to-wall sunshine, temperature still above average by about eight to 10 degrees in general, this is not a bad forecast. we will take it with sunshine, it will be a great excuse to be outside if you are maybe pent up enjoying some time with family, friends, yesterday. meanwhile, it is a beautiful day today and tomorrow. but there will be a cold front on the horizon by sunday to bring in next round every wet weather which we will talk about later in the show. along with the colds front comes the return of the winter chill. vittoria, over to you. >> thank you so much, katie. good morning, everyone, as every right now, traffic still beautiful for you. no delays in either direction. however, we do have a little something to talk about. well, actually big old tanker truck. traveling on 95, but it is not causing any problems, very, very little disruption on your
5:35 am
95 commute. but 95 right around girard avenue, notice this disable tanker truck taking out the left-hand lane. notice we already have tow truck on scene, to attends to this, so that's great news, because hopefully it will be out of there soon enough. but as you notice, traffic moving by without any really any problems in either direction, even with that out there. so that's the great news, and the better news it continues on all of the rest of our majors, even the rest of our bridges, and, the rest of our surrounding areas, like traveling in delaware, new jersey, i mean, take a look at the ben franklin bridge. no delays heading into jersey, into pa, all good news there. as we continue, and head well the burlington bristol bridge one area that we are waiting for that bridge opening. so they said it was going to be around 53 but now they have pushed it back to 6:00. so approximately 6:00 this morning, expect the burlington bristol bridge to be open. stay with us here at cbs-3. we'll let you know has in fact opened up. construction traveling in new jersey closing jarvis road,
5:36 am
between prospect avenue and williamstown, aerial road, ongoing until january 10th. berlin crosskeys road is your best alternate. erika? >> thanks, vittoria. family is spending the day after christmas picking up the pieces after a car came crashing through their florida home. i mean, just look at the damage left behind here. it happened early yesterday morning, at this home near tampa. the 82 year old homeowner says she is thankful no one was seriously hurt, but worried what she'll do now. because she's on affixed income. >> it has been condemned. i have to move out. i've lived here 46 years. i practically raised my family here. no mansion, but it was my home. now i don't have a home. >> police are investigating that crash, and say that it may have been caused by a medical issue. 5:36. in business news this morning, the best and the worse values on the road.
5:37 am
>> also, traders are back on wall street after that holiday break. let's check in now with money watch's jill wagner up at the new york stock exchange, good morning, jill. >> good morning, erika, nicole. the market reopen after christmas, with the dow at its highest level ever, climbed six more points on wednesday, the nasdaq finished eight points higher. >> well, the season's holiday sales were reportedly just meet expectations, of 4% increase from last year. the national retail federation says stores didn't see a huge rush of last minute shoppers this year, and there were also spotty sales on "black friday". russian president, vladmeere putin, ordered a cap on vodka prices. about 30% hire than last year, as the russian currency falls. putin says expensive vodka encourages bootleg producers, and i will legal vodka also carries greater risk to people's health. >> and the jeep wrangler may be one of america's most iconic automobiles. but consumer reports also rang
5:38 am
philadelphia number one for worse value calling it hard riding, uncomfortable, unreliable. the best value? consumer reports says, you should try the toyota camry hybrid. erika, nicole? >> my husband has been trying to get us to get a jeep wrangler. >> have to tell him about this. >> very useful information, jill. >> you didn't realize -- >> it does look cool, though, i love the wrangler. >> looks fantastic. >> jill, thank youment. still ahead this morning, new tool in the battle against the buldge. the new weight loss drug hitting pharmacies, why not everyone can use it. >> plus, are you planning to avoid the malls and do on line shopping this weekend? three's on your side with five mistakes that make it easier for hack tears steel your information. >> and the roads look okay right now if you are getting ready to head out to do some that far shopping. look at that, almlmost no one on the roads. good time to hit the mall. if it is open yet. we'll check traffic and weather together these coming
5:39 am
up after the
5:40 am
septa police officers helped deliver a baby boy yesterday on septa's market frankford line in center city. quite a christmas gift, mom
5:41 am
and baby are doing fine, at hahnemann this morning. >> and, today marks the first day of kwanzaa. it is a celebration of family, community, and culture. today's theme is unity. kwanzaa is celebrated through january 1st. >> on your health watch this morning, there is new help for americans battling obesity. the fda just approved a new weight management drug. researchers say that clinical trial showed 62% of patient lost at least 5% of their body fat on this drug. now, the medication is only approved for people who are overweight and have high blood pressure, cholesterol, or type two diabetes. well, many of us will be indulge in holiday leftovers in the next couple of days, while they make it easy to make a quick tasty meals, if they weren't stored properly you could have a food born illness. what you need to know before you dig in. >> tis the season for turkey, all the trimmings, cookies, and pies, we often end up with enough leftovers for weeks.
5:42 am
but that doesn't mean you should eat them that long. registered dietition lindsay malone from the cleveland clinic warns bacteria can grow on foods and can make you sick. >> the general rule of thumb, something in your refrigerator longer than three, four days, you want to toss it. >> also on the toss list, anything that self serve, like chips, crackers, dip, and nuts, and anything left sitting out. >> for that longer than two-hour period, bacteria is growing. and it doubles just about every 20 minute. >> when it comes to re-heating holiday lift overs, experts say the microwave is not the best option. warming food in the oven is recommended, because it heat more evenly, and thoroughly. >> you want to make sure that you're re heating them to internal temperature of approximately 165 degrees. and so what that will do is it will kill some of the bacteria that could have had an opportunity to grow when it was, you know, sitting out on your table, or in the cooling-off period.
5:43 am
>> and just because the leftovers still looks good or smells good, doesn't mean it can't make you sick. if bacteria is lingering, you won't be able to see it, smell it, or taste it. danielle nottingham, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". i think that looks delicious, that pie! >> all right, good morning, everybody, yes, high pressure is in place for us here today. we will be looking ahead to real nice weather here today, tomorrow, by sunday things do begin to change, and begin to go downhill, not just in the pattern, but also, on the actual thermometer. so we walk you through this. right now storm scan3, featuring nothing but very, very thin vale of cloud cover, and even our entire area, completely in the clear from that, no pun intended there. as we zoom things around little bit here, the whole eastern seaboard actually wide open at this point with high pressure, basically, just building in, essentially from the south and west. so it is a nice large dome that far hi, and we will keep nice clear skies. now, off to the west, gout to look closely, but vale or
5:44 am
drape line of light snow. that is the combination of our next cold front. by the time that gets here, looking all the way out to sunday, so we have two straight days of nice weather with high pressure. meantime, out we go to pleasant valley middle and high school in broads head ville, temperatures currently 30 degrees, absolutely colder than it was yesterday this same time. broad heads villain everywhere he will, we look at the area temperatures. thirty-five the current temperature in philadelphia, at the airport, anyway, and actually now bottoming out in the 20's in millville. so, noticeable difference for sure. but it is hard not to beat yesterday's temperatures at this time, right? meanwhile, all the way across central canada, that is where the core of this cold pent up right now, and appears as the jet stream will just stay nice and north here, into canada, to keep that air away from us. at least initially. so, while there will be cold air in the atmosphere, not over the delaware valley. we keep the temperatures in the 50's for you here today, it is bright, sunny, light winds, beautiful. mainly clear tonight, all is calm and throughout the day
5:45 am
all is bright. so, 35 for that nighttime low. it means it is chilly but still tech neckly above average. we keep the theme going through sunday despite the cold front coming through, by monday, temperatures and cold air catch up to us, winter makes return appearance here it, does appear as though for new new years eve we stay dry, but it will be cold out there. guys maybe if you just unwrapped brand new tablet, smart phone for christmas, make sure to download the cbs weather app. get your updated forecast, check storm scan3 whenever you want, you can download that app for free right now on itunes and google play. vittoria, over to you. >> thank you so much, katie. good morning, everyone, we have very serious accident in delaware count if i you are traveling on the northbound side every route one approaching 476, you will notice a team of emergency personnel attends to go this incident. so, traveling in this area, you will notice that the right lane is blocked, and only the left lane is squeezing by, as now penndot is swinging that camera around. notice the severity of this incident, and it does linger beyond the intersection, so please give yourself some more time. again, if you are traveling route one northbound at 476,
