we will begin with breaking news this morning an air asia plane with more than 160 people on board, loses contact with ground controller, and remains missing this morning. we are following the latest as this distraught family members, wait for their loved ones. tearful good bye to one of new york's finest friend, family members and a sea of men and women in blue pay their final respects to one of two police officers shot and killed last weekend. and it is dry for now but some showers are moving in, carol is tracking timing coming up, good morning, it is sunday, dent whens eighth i'm nicole brewer thanks for joining us. it is 8:00 o'clock on the dot. let's check on the forecast with carol. pretty mile. we are in the complaining. >> in, we cannot complain about these temperatures. they have been great. we have seen them in the last couple days into the 60's, yesterday and absolutely

perfect day at 57 degrees. today we will be in the 50's. lower even of the 50's. we have cloud out there today unlike yesterday. we can see some of them ben franklin bridge right new with the clouds overhead and then we will take a look at the beach, margate, and you can see some cloud there as well. it is a very quiet morning in all locations. the let me show you storm scan three. this is what we're looking at. i think i went right past it. we are looking at 44 degrees, in the philadelphia area at the present time. forty-three in trenton. we have a temperature that is, going to be pretty easy to take even as we go through the rest of the day to day, so enjoy these temperatures, a lot, because i think you will, fine them very, very, very easy to deal with, were being in the lower 50's. now we also have as we go through time going to be finding temperatures that get in the lower 50's but not much of a problem anyplace else. but notice how cold it is, areas to the north and west, and you can see that the colder air is out there. we are going to be finding it

later on today. we have some scattered shower chances as we go through the the afternoon but plenty of breaks in between and the showers for the most part should be light with a high temperature this afternoon getting to about 51 degrees nicole. >> carol, we have been following breaking news this morning. it has been hours and still no sign of missing air asia plane. the plane was from indonesia and headed to singapore. airline officials report that the plane disappeared over java sea shortly after the pilot requested to change the flight plane because of weather. syma chowdhry has tea tails live from the cbs-3 sat center syma. >> nicole, the the plane lost communication about 40 minutes into its two hour flight. now this happened last night when the pilot requested a change of course due to weather. there were reportedly heavy thunderstorms over the java sea. now officials say there was no kiss stress signal from the cockpit. both countries immediately launched a search and rescue operation but officials in indonesia say they have suspended an air search due

tonight fall but search by boats will continue. flight 8501 was heading to singapore with more than 160 people on board, the the plane had two pilots, a five cab and crew and 155 passengers including 16 children and one infant. most of the passengers are indonesia. loved ones began gathering at and airport in indonesia waiting to get an update. air asia is a malaysia based airlines. back in march flight 370 went missing, soon after, taking off from kuala lumpur for beijing. it still has not been found. now white house officials a say president obama has been breached on the latest incident and will continue to monitor the situation. we're live from the sat center i'm syma chowdhry for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". all right, same, thank you. new this morning two people are rush to the hospital, after a car accident in northeast philadelphia's

lawncrest neighborhood. it happened in the 700 block have of knor street just before 3:00. up investigators tell us that the car was traveling fast when it hit a pillar of the house and flipped over. one person is in critical condition and the other is in stable condition. well, thousands line the streets to honor new york city police officer rafael ramos. many police officers from our area made the trip to queens to pay their respects to their fallen brotherhood. dignitaries including vice-president joe biden were also there for the somber services. tony iyielo from our sister station in new york has more. >> reporter: flag draped coffin of rafael ramos and just behind his widow mlris a coming that look of grace from one who must be strong from otherses specialry jayden and justin who wore his father a's nypd coat to church. >> his deepest sympathies. my heart goes out to her, her son and her whole family. >> reporter: nina ramierez join her nypd husband and young son in the massive crowd

outside christ tabernacle church. >> ♪ or the land of the free and the home of the brave ♪ >> reporter: cops from connecticut to california came to show support for a man described as devoted to faith, family, and the city that he loved. >> a man who never had to raise his voice to gain the respect of the room because his character and his integrity out shined and a shouted louder then any word that could have ever been said. >> reporter: vice-president biden spoke representing a grateful nation and governor cuomo praised the grace shown by the grieving ramos family. >> for the the ramos family, i say that we thank you, and we honor you and please join me giving the ramos family a round of applause. >> reporter: at place echoed out side is. behind the barricade at 65th and myrtle hundreds of every day new yorkers gathered in a a show of mourning and respect. >> we are here to support them

and let them know that we are behind them 100 percent. >> reporter: united in grief but not in support of mayor deblasio. >> we thank you. >> reporter: as his eulogy played on a jumbotron screen thousands of cops watching turn their backs. i asked several for comment and they said the gesture spoke for itself. lingering hard feelings over a perceived lack of support for nypd at city hall. deblasio's word about ramos included praise for the police force. >> and he was so committed to the nypd it meant so much to him, to be a member of the finest police force in this country. >> reporter: ramos died just before he was to become a police chaplain inspiring this from commissioner bratton. >> i'm appointing him an honorary department chaplain of the eighty-fourth precincts. >> reporter: outside people joined hand during the final prayer, more than a few tears flowed, as helicopter flew by in missing man formation.

then the relentless drum beat as a hero was carried to his final rest. in queens, new york tony iyielo cbs-3 "eyewitness news". a number of philadelphia officers were in new york to pay their respects. afterward they shared a few picture from that funeral with us. you can see just how big the turnout was to honor office are ramos. somber ceremony, served as a reminder to the sacrifice that he is they make every single day. >> unfortunately we do know what that feels like because we have had our own tragedies here in philadelphia but we're going to keep them in our prayers. the entire department. the large department. but as well as their extended department and we're a part of that as far as we're concerned. >> they were joined by police departments throughout the region. these pictures were sent from officers in gloucester county, upper darby township camden county and berkley township just to name a few. also this weekend we will continue to see more protests in the wake of the grand jury

decisionness ferguson and in new york. >> stand up, don't shoot. >> demonstrations held here in center city was organize by several local muslim groups to address what they called police brutality a against the lack community. a number of high ranking officers were also there to keep that dialogue opened. we have new information this morning on a hit and run crash in bristol township bucks county. nine three-year old jenny russo died a short time after a pickup truck slammed into her home and then drove off. authorities now say results from the autopsy indicate that she died from natural causes and there was no evidence of trauma a cause body that crash. the driver did eventually turn himself in. at this time no charges have been filed. police released a name of the motorcyclist killed in the crash in king of prussia chopper three over the scene friday night at river road and mccoy lane. fifty year-old eric keither of conshohocken crossed over the double yellow line and collided head on with a truck. he was killed instantly. the driver of the truck was

flown to the hospital but is expect to recover. well, police say a man tried to rob a local sports bar, armed with nothing but a broom handle. yeah, it happened friday night at chestnut sports bar in newark delaware. a manager was cleaning up when the man attacked her and demanded money from the the register. she for the him off with the help of another customer. he ran away empty handed and is still on the loose. philadelphia police are searching for suspects in two separate grocery store robberies are. the first happened on tuesday at citizens grocery on south 13th street. police say two suspects demand money from the clerk and one pulled a gun. they got away with about $500. on thursday police responded to a robbery in progress at joe's food market at 1900 block of east passyunk avenue. the suspect ran off without getting any money if you can identify any suspect seen on your screen, please call the the police. the founder of the philadelphia charter school says the doors will close for good, this week. in a letter sent to parents and a message on the school's

web site walter d palmer says leadership learning partners charter school will close west december 31st. "eyewitness news" spoke with walter palmer over the phone. he says this will affect some 675 students who recently won a lottery to stay at that school. it was back in october that the school had to shut out hundreds of students, for exceeding their enrollment cap. spokesperson for the school district of philadelphia released this statement saying that they are quote ready to assist parent and students with transition to publish schools. the school district has set up a dedicated web site for walter palmer parents to assist them with the transition process. it is 8:10. coming up next on "eyewitness news" a look back at some of the store that is made national headlines this year. and more breaking international news this morning, a a ferry, catches fire and in greece and now search and rescue is on for 500 people at sea. also putting together the times square ball how new york is getting ready to ring in the new year when we come right back.

recapping our breaking news this morning being an air asia plane is missing. flight with 162 people on board was coming from indonesia heading to singapore. airline officials say that the plane went missing after the pilot asked for permission to change course because of bad weather. the plane lost communication with indonesia's sirbaya airport 42 minutes when they were over the java sea. the plane had under gone its last maintenance check in 16th. search and rescue operations are now in progress.

we have more breaking news this morning a ferry carrying nearly 500 people off the coast of greece is on fire. so far there have been in reports of injuries but passengers are reportedly stranded on the highest deck. we are told the fire broke out the on the ferry's car deck. gale force wind are helping fan these flames. ships from greece and italy are on the scene attempting to make rescue. americans took to the streets in protest, the ebola a virus put the nation on edge, and nfl players got in trouble off the field. omar villa afranca takes a look back at some of the store mace made news in the u.s. this year. >> reporter: a white police officer shot and killed unarmed black teenager michael brown in ferguson, missouri, sparking unrest. grand jury did not indict the officer, people protested across the country. there were more demonstrations days later when a new york city grand jury cleared a police officer in the apparent choke hold death of eric garner.

150 million-dollar for lou gehrig's foundation. omar villafranca for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". i was so happy to get out of that whole ice bucket challenge thing, carol, right around the time i had jack. so sorry i'm a little busy but so many, so many things happening this year, crazy to believe it is coming to an end. >> well, we have another year and i'm sure a lot more to come. the lets look at the dry boardwalk for now nicole, we are looking at people i saw a whole bunch of people running down this boardwalk going so fast that, they are way down there, right now. maybe they are getting some taffy. it just looks nice right now. if you have outdoor plans today, not as ideal as yesterday but we do have some breaks and any kind of showers we will certainly enjoy that. the cloud are out there though 41 degrees. this is out in kutztown. you can see decent deck of clouds, but light wind so the temperatures are comfortable and the win is not stirring them up, so things look good from that perspective.

we are definitely dealing with some of these showers though. they are light, a lot of them have moved on through and we will get a break, we will pick up a couple more in a few other spots and then this afternoon, for a good portion of the afternoon many of of us getting a break and then another area will be coming by and especially philadelphia points south will you see showers. we're not expecting heavy showers or rain but just not as ideal as yesterday but boy, this is ideal this time of the morning to have temperatures that are in the the 40's, in the middle 40's. forty-four in philadelphia allah even town. forty-six millville. already 52 degrees in wildwood. let's enjoy these temperatures. because, look at this, is this a joke? minus 18 in canada. minus five near international falls. nine in minneapolis. it is no joke. this colder air is coming. nothing to this level but we will find our temperatures as we go through new years eve getting into the 20's, overnight. so the the cold air up there,

not staying up there, it is heading in this direction. this is the warmest day that we will be finding for at least the next several days, and also could be the warmest day for the the rest of the year. we have temperatures in the lower 50's. cold front is coming through here. showers, and of course, then we do start to pick up these colder temperatures. this computer model says that look at 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon. a whole bunch of nothing. we've got some cloud. a couple of spots and some showers and then by the time we hit 6:00 o'clock maybe some bigger area of showers but still generally on the light side, by the time we get to midnight maybe some more showers, again south of philadelphia, and some cloud, through philadelphia, but they even leave, and then tomorrow does not look like a bad day, temperatures will be cooler into the middle 40's and then we will start to see these temperatures drop beyond that. fifty-one in philadelphia today, so we can enjoy that. fifty at the the shore. poconos 45 degrees. with that chance of the shower. again i mentioned those cold temperatures that we got to the north and west, well to the north and west, will they

>> he was so committed to the nypd. it meant so much to him to be a member of the force in this country. >> ramos died just before he was to become a police chaplain. so yesterday police commissioner bratton appointed ramos a honorary chaplain of the eighty-fourth precinct. police in arizona says a suspect in the domestic violence case shot and killed a police officer before killing himself. officer tyler stewart was looking for the suspect at the time of that shooting in the housing development. investigators say the suspect shot at the officer multiple times and then shot himself. the 24 year-old officer died at the hospital. well, a change for businesses in ferguson. after weeks of being boarded up for protection during the unrest business owners are taking the board down. a number of shop owners say sales had been down since the the deaths of michael brown in august and protest that followed the grand jury decision. resident are hopeful that

businesses will pick backup and that area will be busy once again with shoppers. back at a home dozens of bikers hit the road to honor one of philadelphia's fallen heroes. warriors watch traveled through city streets paying tribute to fire fighter lieutenant joyce craig. craig died while battling a fire in west oak lane earlier this month. ride took the the group through neighborhoods that she helped protect during her 11 years of services. this weekend marks one month since disappearance of shane montgomery and as his family continues to hold on to hope some of us marching in the new years mummers parade will honor the missing college student in her own way. several fights break out among in hundreds of teenage hours pack a pittsburgh mall. police say large groups have of teens start to show you have at 5:00 o'clock on friday with crowd swelling to a thousand. two people were hospitalized with minor injuries. that chaos forced monroeville mall to close early. >> all of a sudden there was all this commotion and you heard a stampede and a bunch of people screaming yelling and then all of the people that worked here came running to the front of the store and shut all of the doors and lock you in. >> police say there was minor damage done to that mall. they don't believe it was an organized event or protest. did you have a holiday gift that is not exactly the perfect fit? well, you better pay attention to these return policies otherwise you could be stuck

witt. three on your side consumer reporter jim donovan has some advice. >> reporter: not every gift is a perfect fit and stores understand that. >> we're returning some gifts that we got that we loved but want in a different color. >> reporter: many retailers adopted less flexible return policies that consumer encounter only once per year. so you will want to read pine print on the the gift receipt before heading to the store. beware certain items may carry a least stocking fee such as tv ande electronics and video games and movies cannot be return once opened. target toys-r-us nd wal-mart have a 90 day return policy with some exceptions. most electronics and computers must be returned within 15 to 30 days depending on the product. usually that return count down starts december 26th. at best buy every merchandise made about a boo through have november and december can be return through january 15th with the exception of items purchased with a third party contract like mobile phones or satellite services. kohl's and macy's have in

view jack frost big boulder, at 41 degrees, it is hard to keep snow on the slope but cloud cover will help. not burning it off with any sunlight this morning. just a wintry looking scene there and a glummy one as well. we saw rain showers this morning but i think your showers should be just about over for the the rest of the day which would be good. you don't need rain and all that snow that is, looking so, so winter-like and christmasy. in the mountains. so we have cape may courthouse 47 degrees. very light wind out of the southwest, and you can see that the the sunnies up, it is out there somewhere but the cloud are taking center stage at this point. we have future well not future weather just yet but this is what we're dealing with at the present time. notice how this is now forming like it is a little ribbon here, it is moving on through, and once it goes on through, we're left with mostly dry conditions, for a while. but, not forever today. we will be filling in and as we head into the afternoon

hours we will be looking at other showers but areas to the north, for the most parts, should be out of this mix once this morning goes by. and these showers will be going by, as well. now, our temperatures in the 40's. 44 degrees in philadelphia. and in wilmington and in allentown, anyplace else, nope, 43 in trenton. 48 degrees down in wildwood. this ace i very mild start to the day and even to the north, not finding anybody in the 30's or anything that is cold at all, 44 willow grove. forty-one pottstown and quakertown. forty-two in mount holly this morning. our future weather now says, well, you notice instantly. remember i mentioned the ribbon right through philadelphia with the rain? it does not show that so that is why when you see it not starting exactly, it is the the reality a you to go how right are they helping down the road? this computer model does want to bring in some drying which we applaud that but we want it to be right too. it also says a couple showers

coming in this afternoon. that is what we will fine. a few showers moving through the afternoon. we are in the looking at heavy rain for anybody but just some of these showers out there and a total difference in the day from compared to yesterday when it was so beautiful. a few more showers tonight especially to the the south you will keep those showers maybe overnight as that system goes by, and then right off of the coast and then by tomorrow, we will may start with some cloud we should end up with some sunshine on monday and a temperature will be cooling down. this is warmest day with temperatures in the 50's, that cold front goes through and then we will start to see things change. if you are traveling around, computer model says head to the south, you're likely to be finding those rain showers. they are just rain showers. that is easier to get through. travel over next couple days should not be a problem for anybody, a couple lake effect streamers going on there. fifty-one in philadelphia. fifty at the shore. poconos 45 degrees. 2015 will start coal. we have got dry conditions expected 28 degrees though at
