♪ we start with breaking news tonight. a tragic scene in gloucester county new jersey. after child is struck and killed by a police cruiser. good evening, everyone i'm natasha brown. thanks so much for joining us. authorities say the victim is a 10-year-old boy. now the accident happened at delsea drive and paul street in franklin township, and that is where "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers has the breaking developments. matt. >> reporter: natasha investigators were out on this road for hours just wrapping up the scene here within the last 15 minutes or so.

officials stressed their investigation is in its very beginning stages, but one official did tell us what they know so far just a short time ago. >> the gloucester county prosecutor's office is currently conducting investigation no a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred early this evening in franklin township. victim was a 10-year-old boy and the driver of the vehicle was a franklin township police officer officer. and the matter is currently under investigation. we will release more details as we receive them, and we would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of that child. >> reporter: and the family and some friends of the victim gathered near the seen of the accident shortly after it occurred. officials say it happened right around 7:00 p.m. this evening. that's when that 10-year-old boy and two friends were walking near the road. witnesses on scene tell "eyewitness news" that they were headed to sleepover when one of the boys ran across the road safely. a second boy that 10-year-old ran across as well and was struck by the police cruiser

heading down the street. only one police officer inside the cruiser at the time. we also learned a short time ago that the officer inside that car was responding to a call. a medics were immediately call to the scene and witnesses said cpr was performed but the boy did die of his injuries. the police officer driving the cruiser was also taken to the hospital with unknown injuries at this point. now whether that officer is at fault here or whether this was just a terrible accident, is under investigation right now. accident and reconstruction teams were on scene here for hours but no matter the out come of that investigation just a terrible night here in gloucester county. we're live in gloucester county, matt rivers cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> matt, thank you so much. also developing at this hour the search resumes for air asia flight 8501 and based on were they know at this point officials say it's believed this plane is at the bottom of the sea. the jetliner disappeared from radar as it traveled from

indonesia to singapore. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette has more on the on-going search mission. >> reporter: at least a dozen navy ships five planes, three helicopters and several war ships from three countries are scowering the java sea between indonesian is a and singapore searching fora asia there was 8501. the flight carried 162 passengers including 17 children children. >> all we can hope for the investigators do their jobs jobs as efficiently and quickly as quickly. >> reporter: the plane took off 5:30am. around 6:10 the pilot asked to climb left to avoid clowned. transportation official said that request was denied due to traffic. sometime between 6:17 a.m. and 6:24am the pilot lost contact with indonesian air traffic control. there was no distress signal. violent thunderstorm were reported at the time the plane

disappeared. anxious family members wait at the airport hoping for a miracle miracle. information screens display a message add advising relatives to contact the airline instead of an rival time. >> terrible feeling of loss right now. >> reporter: flight 8501 mysterious disappearance is eerily similar to that of malaysian airlines flight 370 in march. that plane which is still missing carried 239 people. >> i think it's coincidence from what we know at this point. >> reporter: vest gathers say there's node of terrorism but nothing has been ruled out in new york, wendy gillette for cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> of course, stay with eyewitness as the search continues for air asia flight 8501. we will have an update on television and online at cbsphilly.com as soon as information trickles inform also spotty showers starting to now move into the region and move out of the region as quickly and after a mild late december weekend, winter is about to make a come back. meteorologist justin drabick

tracking the return of some cold temperatures. justin. that's right, natasha. now it's nothing we can't handle. yes, it is late december so we'll see temperatures getting close to where they should be for this time of year. over the next few days. it's not like a true arctic outbreak that we're talking about this week but here we go. still mild ahead of a cold front causing some showers around the region. especially from philadelphia on south and east through central delaware, southern new jersey, again, very light stuff. another hour or two should begin to move offshore. temperatures still on the mild side. 40s to near 50 degrees this hour. cold air is still out across western pennsylvania. it will get here overnight by the time you wake up monday morning, many areas from the city on northward will be in the 30s. still hank and ton low 40s in the clouds across south jersey and delaware. the hee temperatures on monday little bit cooler. a couple of degrees above average mid fours for philadelphia and at the shore. chilly up in the mountains sunshine temperatures there in the 30s. now coming up in the full forecast we'll tack about how long the dry weather lasts and those temperatures dropping below average as we finish off 2014 that's coming up in a few

minutes. natasha. >> thank you so much justin. in her short live hannah inspired alleges laying in pennsylvania requiring hospitals to screen for a very rare disease caused crabbe today hannah lost her balance. her parents say it gives them comfort to know through anna's law her name will live on. tears, hugs, sincerest condolences for a family experiencing the heartbreaking loss of their child. little hannah just 23 months old wasn't just any child. she changed lives and laws during her short journey. she was adored baby who couldn't move, eat or communicate because of an extremely rare and deadly degenerative 'tis order known as krabbea. >> she has a support system. she changed the world and we're so blessed to have everybody here for us. it's something you can't go through alone. >> she lost her battle with the disease just three days after christmas. candles burn brightly at this

vigil. illuminating the somber faces of those who cared most about her. >> she knew we wanted christmas and she stayed. it was time. she was tired. >> reporter: hasn't gnaw wagon diagnosed at four months old. her mother has fought diligently to have heel pricked screening test added into pennsylvania law it's known as hannah's law and in october governor corbett signed it into law in the state. >> awareness for krabbea caught at birth hannah would have been walking right now. and not sitting in a morgue. she'd be here with us. >> more purposes we found for her life, it gave her and us more reasons why she was here and why she was going to leave this earth earlier than we were. >> reporter: her mammary lingers on at this gathering. her short life filled with purpose. her name forever etched into a law that could ultimately change lives. well hannah would have turned two years old on january 15th.

that arrived in the mail this weekend. >> feel be trade. disrespected. >> reporter: melissa thompson says anger an even bigger emotion after a letter came home from her son's school this weekend but she says none of that compares to how he's doing. >> mentally destroying my son. roar report saturday the letter from walt d. palmer charter school addressed to the parents of nearly 700k through eight students saying at the end of this year, school is shutting down for good. >> walter d. palmer is a charter system buried in financial problems. in may the pennsylvania supreme court ruled the school board has to pay back $1.5 million to the school district of philadelphia for end controlling nearly twice as many students as they were allowed. in october, a lottery was held that cut hundreds of children from palmer charter while palmer high was shut down from good. the letter from the board this weekend tells parents the monthly payments from the court decision are too high and

they're left with no other options. statement from the school district of philadelphia says " "the walter d. palmer organization has not inform the school district of its plan to close the charter school" the district is ready to help parents with the transition to other schools. >> it was like that's our christmas gift? the school closing down on us? >> feels very hurtful. >> reporter: we spec to the school's founder and chairman walter d. palmer by phone. he says he's out of town and couldn't appear on camera but he added that all 675 students will be affected and transition team is in place to work with parents on placing those students in other schools. for now reporting from northern liberties, i'm steve patterson cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> well arc very disappointing eagles season comes to an end but the birds were at least able to pull off a win in their finale again the new york giants giants. sports director beasley reece is live in the cbs3 sat center with the highlights of this final game.

>> one person was killed. more than 400 others stranded when a ferry caught fire between italy and albania. passenger shot this incredible video of this fire from the unside. now, italy and grease dispatched boats and helicopters to that scene. rescue efforts are on-going. hampered by rain, hail and rough seas. officials say about 200 of the for hadn't dread 78 people on

have a limited presence in afghanistan. and sony' play station network it's back up and running. the online gaming service suffered a multi day outage on some of the busiest days of the year. officials from sony entertainment say the network was attacked disrupting connectivity and online game play. a group of hackers who go by the name lizard squad claimed responsibility for the cyber attack. the fbi is currently investigating. the new year it's just days away now and tonight a sneak peek at what's in store for the 2015 mummers parade. ♪ >> the fralinger string band took their rehearsal outside moving to the beat and the ikea parking lot in south philly. auction hear the mewing is now but you will not be able to see those costumes not until the big day. as if the new year isn't enough cause for celebration they're commemorating one hadn't doctored years of participation

into the 30s much these are high temperatures. so overnight lows in the 20s. cold start to 2015. temps below average by the end week we climb up to where we should be for this too many of year. right now low 40s in some of the suburbs much reading allentown near 50 for philadelphia 46. wilmington delaware, there's the cold air. still lagging out behind this front across western pennsylvania mid theirs in pittsburgh state college. heading eastward overnight. over the next few days seal that colder air from can in a today. temperatures running 5 degrees below average for new year's eve and into mud new year's day. tomorrow back to dry conditions partly sunny skies. highs in the mid 40s. that colder core of air starts to build in on tuesday much that's when you'll feel the difference. temperatures struggle to get into the upper 30s look like new year's eve day only mid theirs for the high the good news it's dry. if you have travel plans or evening plans new year's eve night it looks good. just cold. dress warm. still lingering clouds around south and east of the city tomorrow morning into the
