and oil in the water off of indonesia. planes and ships from four countries have joined the hunt for flight 8501. aviation officials cannot explain why the plane vanished from radar screens 40 minutes after takeoff. mark albert is in washington. mark good morning. >> good morning, lauren. aviation experts tell cbs news that this search is likely to be far easier than the ongoing search for malaysia air flight 370, which disappeared in march, and that's because the waters where this air asia plane disappeared are much much shallower, only 150 feet deep, and the area is heavily trafficked. australian search planes have spotted objects in the java sea where air asia plane disappeared. experts do not know if it is from flight 8501. with help, indonesian officials

say it's likely the plane is at the bottom of the sea. the flight caring 162 people including 17 children took off for singapore sunday morning. shortly after one of the pilots asked to change a route due to bad weather. the request was denied due to high traffic. the data recorders will help tell what happened next. >> we've got life in the batteries for the next 30 days maybe depending upon when the batteries were put into the aircraft as long as even 90 days. >> indonesia promises a safety review something that is a top priority. relatives still wait for any news holding onto hope at a crisis center set up at the indonesian airport where the missing plane took off. the u.s.'s seventh fleet which is based in asia says it stands ready to assist but has not yet been asked for help.

also indonesian authorities have not asked the national transportation safety board, which is based here in washington, for assistance. they're often called to help in international air disasters. lauren? >> mark albert in washington. thank you for that mark. more than 100 people remain trapped the morning aboard a smoke-filled terry adrift between italy and albania. a fire broke out on the ship more than 24 hours ago. gale-force winds and choppy water is hampering their effort. the heat from the fire is melting their shoes. alphonso van marsh is in london. good morning. >> that italian ferry caught fire early sunday morning. at least one person is dead and authorities are scrambling to rescue those on board. passengers say a fire broke out on the car deck while they were still asleep in their cabins. the first large group of passengers rescued from the

ferry boat arrived in southern italy sunday morning. passengers say the fire's suffocating smoke and heat drove them to the ship's upper decks where they faced driving rains and hail. rough seas are complicated efforts. smoke from the fire is also making it hard for helicopter crews to airlift passengers from the ship. a medical team and doctor are now on board to assist the more than 100 passengers and crew still on board. the passengers come from countries including greece france italy, germany, and here in britain. they're mostly commuters and families on vacation. lauren? >> alphonso van marsh in london thank you. police in los angeles are on a citywide tactical alert after a shooting that targeted officers sunday night. one suspect is in custody and police are searching for a second person. he's considered armed and dangerous. authorities recovered a rifle.

no officers were hurt in the shooting, and it's not clear if any bullets hit their patrol car. this week officials from new york's police unions will meet with the city's police commissioner in an effort to diffuse tensions after the killing of two officers. a deepening rift between rank-and-file police and new york mayor bill de blasio was on display at the funeral for one of the slain officers this weekend. as don dahler reports, tens of thousands attended. >> reporter: tens of thousands of police officers attended but it was this action by a few hundred that still has people talking. as mayor bill de blasio took to the podium -- >> all of this city is grieving -- >> cops gathering outside turned their backs on the monitor. on "face the nation" this morning police commissioner bill bratton displayed his disappointment. >> i think to bring issues into that event was very

inappropriate. >> reporter: bratton said part of the animosity relates to difficult contract negotiations between police officers and unions. after a grand jury failed to indict an officer. he said he was astonished by the decision and was worried that his biracial son could come to harm at the hands of the police. pat lynch put the blame for last week's murders on officers ramos and wenjian liu as part of police protests. >> that blood on the hands starts on the steps of city hall at the office of the mayor. >> reporter: former mayor rudy giuliani has been a major critic of mayor de blasio but he said in this case the officers were wrong. i think he'd get this over with if he did it. >> he's expressed his support

for the officers including during officer ramos's funeral service. the funeral for the other officer killed is scheduled for next saturday and because of chinese private customs is expected to be on a much smaller scale. former president george h.w. bush remains hospitalized in houston this morning. a supposeman said word of his discharge could come soon but for now doctors want to continue monitoring mr. bush. the 90-year-old was taken by ambulance to methodist hospital tuesday after experiencing shortness of breath. officials say the death toll could rise from a fire at a senior living apartment building near san antonio. five people are confirmed dead in a fire that broke out sunday in the 11-story high-rise. 150 firefighters responded. the cause is under investigation, but it appears to have started on the third floor. >> the third floor hallway is absolutely gutted the doors are

charred, the fire and smoke were communicated throughout the building so we're very fortunate that we're not standing in front of you talking about a greater loss of life. >> ten people remain hospitalized. officials say not all of the 216 residents listed as living there are accounted for, but it's also not clear how many were in the building when the fire broke out. on the "cbs moneywatch," playstation goes back online and the movie "the interview" sets the record for sony. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with those stories and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, lauren. here on wall street investors start another short holiday week in record territory. last week the dow gained 776 points, at an all-time high. the s&p was up 86 also a record high and the nasdaq rose 24 points. tokyo's nikkei lost half a percent. hong kong's hang seng gained

by terry vertz, an astronaut from maryland, who arrived recently to the international space station. the 13-year combat mission for afghanistan is over. a ceremony marked the end of their presence but more than 13,000 troops will remain to start 2015. chip reid traveling with president obama in hawaii reports. >> reporter: the flag of the u.s.-led international force was lowered in a ceremony in kabul. american general john campbell rolled up the flag transferring it to afghanistan's league forces. >> working together we can win. >> reporter: in a previous statement president obama said it mark as milestone in our country. for more than three years innocent lives were taken from us from 9/11 our nation has been at war in afghanistan.
