i'll tell you what it is coming up. jess? >> good morning, it is relatively early so far. not whole lot going on. no problems currently on the ben franklin bridge, from the jersey side, so headed westbound into the city all lanes are open and moving along great. i'm going to check in with mass transit in just a couple every minutes erika? >> jess, thank you. new this morning, two philadelphia police officers were hit by flying debris during a overnight garage fire in frankford. that call came in just before 1:30 for a garage fire on the 1100 block of arrott street. the garage was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on that scene. authorities say that's when they noticed a station wagon inside the garage. >> while extinguishing the fire they heard allowed pop. and then a piece of metal from the rear bumper of the vehicle traveled about 100 feet at high rate of speed striking two police officers in their leg. >> both officers were treated for minor injuries. investigators are now looking into what sparked that fire. a ten year old boy dies

after being hit by police crews, the crash happened last night as the boy crossed the street along delsea drive nieve paul street. "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo at the scene to tell you more. jan? >> ukee, an autopsy will be performed today on that ten year olds boy who was struck and killed here, on sunday night, in the meantime, investigators continue to search for answers as to why this happened. as word spread, that a ten year old child had been killed crossing the street here in franklin township, family and friends came to the scene looking for answers. >> the victim was a ten year old boy and the driver of the vehicle was a franklin township police officer. and the matter is currently under investigation. >> police say the accident happened just after 7:00 p.m. here on delsea drive near paul street. the ten year old boy and two of his friends were heading to a slumber party at the time. one of the child's friends had made it across the street

safely but police say as the ten year old start today cross he was struck by franklin township police cruiser and died. investigators say that officer was responding to a call when the accident happened, and was the only person inside the cruiser. >> will release more details as we receive them. we would like to offer our deepest condolances to the family of that child. >> reporter: now, that officer was taken to the hospital just for evaluation, no other children were hurt, again, in the meantime, full investigation is now underway, that's being headed out by the gloucester county prosecutor's offers. reporting live from franklin township this morning, jan carabeo, "eyewitness news". >> coming up on 5:03, here is your traffic and weather together. >> good morning, hey everybody, we start things off on pretty quiet note here this week. the whole week ahead actually looks just as quiet. high pressure settles in. it will setting in for nice long visit it looks like. start by first and for most right out to storm scan3 where

we continue to find still some lingering moisture around the tri-state sweep here. that moisture comes county of a frontal boundary that actually brought in some showers and clouds yesterday too. that continues to just drop south. as it slowly retreats, we are going to start to see things brighten up little bit here. won't be the brightest prettiest, sunniest day you have ever seen, some of you also will be lift with lingering shower, as we are currently finding through our south most counties, but even into the late morning could still finds few showers around. overall this is nice transition for us, into some quiet weather that's going to last us for awhile. so a live look at "skycam 3", all calm, guys, very tranquil in the city anyway. do you have little bit more of northerly component to the winds flow with the retreat of the front. 41 degrees current lip, it is feeling little colder any time a breeze is blowing out of the north at this time of year. mount pocono, already flirting with normal daytime high, this is the best we can hope for for daytime highs today. only going to evening out

maybe another four, five, 6 degrees, once we actually hit our official early morning low here in the next hour or two. as we go through the day, this is more a dose of reality, technically still smidge above average back to the 40's, that's where we should be for the standards this time of year. jess, over to you. >> thank you good morning 5:04, everything relatively quiet so far this morning. it is still early. we go outside check out how things are doing on the ben franklin bridge, as you can see, they're doing just okay. this is actually from the jersey side, from the toll plaza, so headed westbound into the city where the taillights are headed, and they're moving along just fine with all lanes open. in problems headed into new jersey from philadelphia, as well. now, over on the schuylkill expressway around spring garden, everything moving great. the eastbound lanes headed toward center city westbound toward king of prussia look good there as well. everything in new jersey, is it no problems for 55, 42, no problems on the atlantic city expressway headed east or westbound, do have ongoing construction route 422 east and westbound between stowe

and route 100 that's going to be one lane until early january. something to look forward to for your morning commute. no problems for the rest of the majors, as well, as i said, it is still early. ukee, back over to you. >> jessica, thank you. developing right now indonesian official say australian planes have spotted things in the sea for missing air asia flight 8501. the plane lost contact with air traffic controllers yesterday while traveling from inch dough neice ya to singapore. cbs correspondent michael bert with more on the search mission. >> australian search planes have spotted objects in the java sea where an air asia plane disappeared investigators do not yet know if it is wreckage from flight 8501 with help pouring in from other nations including singapore, malaysia, and australia indonesian officials say it is likely the plane it is -- it is at the bottom of the sea. including 17 children, it took off for sing a poor. shortly after one of the

meantime, more than 200 passengers, and crew, are still trapped on board that fer that i caught fire yesterday in rough seas between italy anal brain ya. italian navy says 250 others have been evacuated. most were air lifted by helicopter to other merchant vessels. one person was killed, and two other hurt. eyewitnesses say that they heard explosions, but the cause of that fire is under investigation. >> divers come up em any their latest search for missing student shane montgomery. the garden state under water recovery unit spent several hours searching the schuylkill river in manayunk yesterday did not see any signs every montgomery. same group of divers found shane's keys last week, the west chester university senior disappeared more than a month ago after leaving in a bar in manayunk. >> school shocker. hundreds of student left in limbo after a school decides to close right in n the middle of the year. >> also ahead must see video when young boy is saved from this burning building. see the frantic rescue, and

are trying to find a new school for tir children. the walter d palmer leadership charter school is closing on wednesday. one parent showed "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson the surprising letter that arrived in the mail over the weekend. >> disrespecting -- >> melissa thompson says ankle is her in even bigger emotion after letter came home from her son's school this weekend. but she says none of that compares to how he is doing. >> mentally destroy my son. >> saturday the letter from walter d palmer charter school addressed to the parent of nearly 700k through eight student saying at the end of this year school is shutting down for good. walter d palmer is a charter system burried in financial problems. in may the pennsylvania supreme court ruled the school board has to pay back $1.5 million to the school district every philadelphia for enrolling nearly twice as many students as they were allowed. in october, a lottery was head that got hundreds of children

from palmer charter while palmer high was shut down for good. the letter from the board this weekend tells parents the monthly payments from the court decision are just too hi, and they're left with no no other options. statement from the school district of philadelphia says quote, the walter d palmer organization has not informed the school district of its plan to close the charter school t goes on to say the district is ready to help parents with the transition, to other schools. >> it was like that's our christmas gift, the school closing down on us. it feels very hurtful. >> we spoke to the school's founder walter d palmer by phone, says he is out of town and couldn't appear on camera but says that all 675 student will be affect in the transition team is in place to work with parents on placing those students in other schools. for now, reporting from northern liberties i'm steve patterson, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". coming up on 5:13, our traffic and weather together.

how about this mild air katie, sticking around? >> sorry, we did actually have controlled front cross through yesterday. where the showers came from, where you are still finding those showers coming from even at this point of the morning. but yes this is the transition. i always like to call it the transition day, when things are beginning to sort of just shift over to a new pattern. that's what we've got going on even as we speak. let me take you out there. we show you what's going on t could be a worse forecast though, when you see what i have got to tell you pretty nice trade off down the road here. so while we're not going to keep the mid 50's, aoun upper 50's around, at least we can bank on brightening skies with time. obviously not just yet. still cloud cover showers across our southern most counties, kent, sussex cumberland, even clipping atlantic and cape may. area of low pressure redeveloping on this frontal boundary as it sort every stalls to the south. so that may help trigger another round of showers again, southern most counties, throughout the day. but otherwise, everybody else can bank on just some clouds

and a little bit of brightening taking place out there today for some sunshine, so not the brightest day we've ever seen, because lot cloudier, for sure, as every late. forty-one from philly, wilmington dover, all the way out to ac so the magic number on that little pocket. see where the colds front hats yet to totally drop through. still at 53 in al ray, 06 in charleston, so the proverbial damage we will say has been done here. again pretty okay trade off. we've got to deal with colder air. partly sunny high hits 46. cooler yes but a lot closer to seasonable for the standards, 31 tonight, see the clouds overhead. over the next couple of days we ridge in the new year pretty quiet note. expect sunshine wednesday. expected on thursday. so, we wrap up the year, and start off new one on a nice chilly granted but sunny note. jess, over to you. >> thank you katie. good morning everybody we go outside, and check out pretty much empty roadways out on the schuylkill expressway, moving along great though, right around 202 so the taillights

right there they're headed westbound, so you can see moving along great. no problems in the eastbound lanes moving in to the center city area as well. now, over on the roosevelt boulevard, i think we just actually lost this camera right here, so i pason by, but right at the bottom hands of the screen there, no problems on the southbound lane if you are headed on the boulevard to the schuylkill expressway. on the schuylkill expressway it the westbound ramp from spring garden closed currently until further notice. no problems on any of the bridges. the ben, the walt, the betsy ross and all of the rest of the majors still pretty slow. 422, blue route, to two currently having no problems. >> here is a look at today's headlines, investigation underway into the death after ten year old boy. he was struck by a franklin township police cruiser. eyewitnesses say that boy was crossing the street head today a friend's house. police say the officer was responding to a call. >> two police officers are hurt by flying debris from a garage fire in philadelphia's frankford neighborhood. both officers should be okay. >> and the search teams

dramatic fire rescue in birmingham, alabama all caught on rescue. >> come out. your mother right here. your mama say do it. come on. >> right, there you saw three year old boy leap from second story window into his cousin's amount. that boy was one of two children, trammed in this burning apartment complex on christmas morning. >> every time you watch it, there he go, he jump, he finally jump.

and just that feeling, just relive that moment, and say that you save someone life. really good feeling. >> we're told a firefighter was also able to rescue the second child. officials say food left on a stove started that fire. also firefighters helped residents at texas retirement community, escape from a deadly three alarm fire. that fire broke out yesterday morning, in the suburb outside of san antonio. crews pulled elderly residents from windows and carried many down ladder trucks to safety. told five people died in that fire. three others were hospitalized. the cause that far fire remains under investigation. >> well, swimmers at one california beach are warned to enter at their own risk after a shark attacked and injured a surfer. authorities say a juvenile great white shark bit 50 year old man while sew surfing with at least dozen others in muro bay. it bit the man on his hip dragged him under water get there is the surfer used a

we are dealing with a frontal boundery dropping south, where a loft clouds are coming from this morning. some of you might still be finding couple of raindrops out there. i have to tell you a lot of the times the bark can be worse than the bite on storm scan3, when we show you what's going on out there right now not heck of a lot anyway. but even what you are finding you know, you might have quick sprinkle out there. this is the front retreating to the south generally though most of us have couple of clouds. now, i've got another fun festive graphic for you.

how about this one? fancy, as the ball is dropping on new years eve and the fireworks are beginning here in the city, you can expect to see some cold conditions. i think the fireworks viewing will be fantastic. but, it is turning colder. that's the trade off here. as high pressure regains control. so at best, the next two days as we wrapping up 2014 entirely, will be very tranquil. but, there is definitely very quiet, too. certainly very chilly, as well. with the sunshine on wednesday, 35 degrees, and then late their night, easily back down into the 20's. so, a lot of times the weather produce as trade off. >> this one i i feel like we can handle. not too bad jess? >> not too bad. i just need long sleeve pant suit for new years eve. perfect. good morning really fashionable, i know. 5:24 good morning guys, we go out and check out the vine street expressway, doing okay around 24th street, westbound lanes where the taillights are on the schuylkill, the eastbound lanes doing the same. over on 95 at cottman

everything moving along great. you can see over the right-hand side there where the taillights are southbound headed toward the center sit area. also losing out the right-hand lane due to ongoing construction, still no problems there. now, over on the schuylkill expressway westbound, there is ongoing construction there until further notice, the onramp from spring garden is currently closed. but, for travel times the rest of the majors still moving great. 422, from 202 into oaks, westbound, still pretty clear from the blue route, 95 into the schuylkill, 18 minutes there, about 18 minutes there on the northbound lanes 202 currently no problems if you are headed northbound. ukee, over to you. >> thank you jess, in sports, the eagles will be cleaning out their lockers soon, after season ending win over those new york football giant. it was a bittersweet ends to the year, that showed so much promise. mark sanchez through couple of touchdowns including this one to rookie wide receiver jordan matthews. and the thirds quarter the birds special teams came through. they had a nice year. james casey blocked the punt, tray burton would ends up scooping it up he's going to
