in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". ♪ it began with bang. high above the delaware river fireworks filling the sky over penn's landing. the first of two dazzling displays this new year's eve as we get ready to celebrate 2015. you are looking live now at penn's landing. the crowd is on the blue cross river rink. they are excited and they are ready to ring in a new year. and here's a live look from chopper three circling penn's landing preparing for round two. the midnight fireworks show that is sure to light up the night sky. good evening and happy new year. i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. we are coming to you from penn's landing. it is the place to be to ring in 2015. we're so glad you're here with us. we've got you covered. we'll celebrate big. >> there's no better place to be

be. no better place to see tonight' events than right here where we are. let's take look at one of our cameras now from the hyatt on columbus boulevard just one of many angles from which we'll be a able to show you this terrific fireworks show tonight. there you see it. the skies are dark now but that second shot of fireworks fun jessica is not far away. >> no, it's not. we're counseling down the minutes now. now, it is a little chilly out here. it is december 31st after all. >> yes. >> but it's not awful. >> it's been colder on new year's eve. >> absolute. layer it up. the person that really can explain it to us the best is kathy orr. she's been here all night with us. let's check in with her now. kathy? we are on the river rink and i'll tell you it is cold but everybody really dressed appropriately. take a look. right now we're looking at this half hour show where the lights are sing crow knifed to the music and look at all these people really enjoying themselves on the ice. it is a spectacular night and i'll tell you these guys have skated before. you can tell. let's talk a little before the about the weather.

temperatures are cold and they're getting colder, but as i mentioned these guys are working out right now in philadelphia the temperature is 29. trenton 24. if you're rinking in the new year in allentown it's 21. gloats out west this is nothing compared to what they're seeing. chicago 18 degrees. st. louis 25 and minneapolis it's only 10. as far as the winds are concerned we're talk about a wind definitely not that bad out here. winds out of the west southwest about five to 10 miles an hour but in philadelphia occasionally we've been a little higher. southwest at 13. our fireworks forecast goes like this. temperature 27 degrees at midnight. the wind chill around 22 with that west wind at about five to 10 miles an hour. back here live, we're talking about getting ready for the fireworks. everyone is in a great mood. we'll be back to talk to them later in the broadcast. okay, kathy we'll see you then thanks so much. despite the cold it is a great atmosphere here tonight. very big crowd that's just gotten bigger and bigger here to

skate. they're here to see the lodge. here to be a part of something special. most of all they're here for this big firework finale that comes your way at midnight. >> it's exciting stuff. justin firm has been here all afternoon all evening really he's met really interesting people who have come down here to celebrate 2015. and justin joins us now live with more on that. justin? jessica, all day and all evening indeed right now the crowd is really been picking up. check out the ring here. this was not the same story a few hours ago. the crowds really coming out here and getting some lapse inform dangerous out here, too. we've seen lots of dangerous spills out here. lots of falls but all in good spirits. actually this will be a great spot to be once those fireworks go off at midnight as you can see just beyond the rink the crowds lining up to make their way. they're getting in position out here on the sidewalk when those fireworks go off. we'll take you right to the story now. take a look.

♪ so fleeting zone fast pops of color against a new year's eve night sky. >> everything explodes that's the best part. that's our favorite part. >> each burst brighter than before. making moments that drove some along the delaware to hold each other a bit closer to watch. others reached for their cell phones aiming up to capture something social media worthy. but eyewitnesses tell us nothing tops seeing those flash she finishes in person. >> i loved it. >> really? >> yes. >> what was your favorite part? >> the ending. >> so exciting. i can't explain it. so energizing. >> reporter: at the start of the 6:00 p.m. show ice skaters stopped in their tracks to take it all in. the fireworks set to music featured hollywood blockbuster sound tracks. though we're told no screen nor indoor comfort could do this show justice. would you like it better at home with the heat on on the tv or better out here in the cold? >> i think it was better out here. >> reporter: as for why we use

the area tonight. >> that's right. the excitement of new year's eve spills out and kind of makes its way all across the area as people get ready to bring in the new year. and "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is actually live at the battleship new jersey in camden. he got to take a look at some of the celebrations all across the region today. david, sounds like a lot of fun. >> reporter: yeah a lot of fun. happy new year to you both. a lot of excitement on board behind me. people here insist they have the best view of the fireworks coming up in an hour but i spent some time going around south jersey to see how people are celebrateing. new jerseyans waited anxious toll welcome 2015. from the battleship to the suburbs. we found plenty of people excited to start the new year. ♪ >> reporter: we caught up with worshipers at gloucester county community church where hundreds packed inside to pray for a new year full of non violence and good fortune. >> praise god, pray remember all of the wonderful things he's done for mow in 2014 and know what he has already prepared for

me in 2015. >> the lord has really blessed us in the year 2014. >> reporter: while services were going on kids in camden said goodbye to 2014 by spending time with police officers who gave out goodies and made sure everyone was safe. >> i grew up in the city all my life, and when i was h i was kid growing up there was nothing like this and i think this program can -- we've been doing here with the community is great. >> reporter: a few miles away more families pack the uss new jersey. a trip back in time to world war ii. we spoke to friends who decided to spent the night on board. >> it's a lot of fun. i mean we've done this before. >> reporter: david magee begs to come back. this time he brought his friend liam. >> it's cramped but cozy. >> reporter: liam says he can't wait to brag to his family and friends. >> i think that it's a really good experience for us right now now. like as kids our age not many people get to see and all. >> reporter: someone on board says there's nothing better than

on conestoga road in villanova. people who went to that clinic were alert dad to make sure they've been properly vaccinated vaccinated. officials also alerted people who were at the cvs on east lancaster avenue in wayne on sunday or at the please touch museum on monday to make sure they are vaccinateed within the next 72 hours. we're following some breaking news right now out of kennett square, chester county. video just coming into the "eyewitness news" room of a fire here on the 200 block of east linden street. no word on any injuries or how it started. of course, keep you updateed as more information becomes available. to bridgeton, new jersey, police officers are on administrative leave tonight after a suspect is killed during a traffic stop. this cell phone video taken last night on south avenue near henry street officials say the suspect had a gun and it was recovered at the scene. we're told officers brahim days and officer roger worley fired their weapons.

final touches are now underway for philadelphia new year's tradition. "eyewitness news" at broad and market where crews were setting up for tomorrow's one hadn't dread 15th mummers parade. some of the floats already lined up. the parade route is a little different this year. while it used to begin in south philadelphia, now it will start at city hall and move south as the mummers march down broad street to the finish at washington avenue. this new year's eve the countdown is on for 2015. let's get right back to chris and jessica on penn's landing where it looks like you guys are doing a good job staying warm out there tonight. >> we're trying our best, diana. the excitement level is here is rising even as those temperatures are start to go >> let's check in with kathy just how is it, kathy? >> i'll tell you it is cold out here but everyone is having great time f you're in the middle of the river rink this is what it would look like if you were skating around in a sr. kell. a panoramic view which is spectacular with the trees lit. of course, the water right here

welcome back as we get ready to ring in 2015 the city of light lived up to its name tonight. the words happy new year were projectedprojected on in paris and several different languages prior to the fireworks show there. much to the delight of those who traveled to france for the big celebration. >> it's a hit world over pharrell's happy was playing during the firework show in turkey. thousands braced the cold to ring in the new year together in istanbul. and here is a live look at times square where the crowds have packed in as they do each and every year up to million revelers from around the world gathering to watch that waterford crystal ball make its slow decent and light up in the numbers 2015. we're back here on penn's landing as we prepare to celebrate 2015. >> we're about 45 minutes away. a little less than 45 minutes away now and of course all of this would not be possible without the delaware river waterfront corporation. >> tom corcoran and jodi are

here with us once again. happy new year to you both. great to see you. happy in you year. we love rinking in the new year with you. >> we talked about it during the break it gets bigger and better every year. how do you guys do it? i think there's a whole new sense of energy happening north and south along the waterfront and especially here at penn's landing. this summer we had tremendous success with the harbor. waterfront winter fest is going to be the same level of excitement and activity. >> we were actually talking about that earlier. people that came down in the summer realized how great it is down here and we're like hey let's spend the winter there too. jodi not just about seeing the beautiful river though you guys have so many activities for people. >> blue cross winter fest has something for everyone. you can come down here and skate and have a spectacular experience or you can relax on comfy couches by fireplaces in the lodge or roast some smores by the fire pits. there's something for everyone. because the river is just such an amazeing place people want to be near. >> it the lodge is really

something special a lot of people are taking advantage of tonight. where are you guys going to be during the fireworks? what are you most looking forward to tonight? we'll be up here and we have group of some of our board members and citizens groups that are coming to night to enjoy this. later on we'll all be atwater front winter fest. >> and how long after tonight will you start thinking about next year? >> we'll be working on it starting next week. i mean we really have sugar house casino to thank. they keep this great civic tradition going with the two shows at 6:00 p.m. and midnight. we had record crowds out here i think for the sick clock show. it gross every year. two different shows two different sun tracks and really excitement about the midnight show. we know it will not disappoint g6:00 o'clock show knocked everybody off their feet. >> yes. >> it real sal gathering place for people on new year's eve which is so fun. >> it's for everyone. originally we thought would it just be for families but everybody wants to come out at 6:00 o'clock and it helps everybody rink in the new year where they want. to they can be home watching it on television.

>> over here, we're going to walk out right now and show you what everybody else is doing. they're enjoying the ice. it is a spectacular view on the ice and they're getting ready for the firework. let's talk a little bit of weather as we mosey on over here. right now in philadelphia it's cold but there's not much whipped so it's fairly comfortable. the temperature right now is 29 degrees on storm scan3. you can see nothing but a clear sky. so that means those temperatures are going to fall fairly quick quickly. in trenton the temperature is 24. atlantic city 25. the poconos it is only 15 degrees. you know after tonight we have more fun going on in philadelphia. we have the mummers parade tomorrow it will be sunny the temperature will be about 10am will be about 32 degrees at 10:00 a.m. by noon the temperature will be 34 degrees. back here live you can see on the ice they're enjoying the skating for now. but it won't be long until we really ring in the new year. a little bit quieter out who are, kate. not as rowdy as inside. happy new year. >> happy new year to you kathy.

everybody is trying to get in where it's warm before they have to go back out in less than 40 minutes to see the firework. as kathy mentioned it's very quiet here in philadelphia all the action weather wise is in the southwestern corner of the country snow continue to go fall in arizona rain near the phoenix area very cold conditions all across the southwest in fact take a look at these hard freeze watches and warnings for california, winter storm warnings in arizona new mexico into west texas even some snow around the vegas area today today. so certainly wasn't the warm weather get away that some people headed that way this afternoon and tonight. but in philadelphia, it's cold. it's dry though and it will stay that way for our start of 2015 tomorrow. we've got a good deal of sunshine temperatures only in the 30s. hey, we do start to warm things up on friday. 39 degrees tomorrow's high is actually not that far off normal this time of the year. we shall be in the low fours that's where we'll be friday. it's dry again onofre today. then saturday starts off quiet as well but by late afternoon or evening, we start to see some

rain pushing in along our next storm. may even start as freezing rain in the poconos but this system taps into another round of that warm moist air similar to what we saw on christmas eve and on sunday we're talking temperatures in the middle 50s. it's going to be warm. going to be sticky but it is all rain with the system into the weekend. let's take look what we're seeing overnight. mainly clear as we end 2015 and kick start 2015 with a sunny new year's day. breezy and chilly at 39 degrees. bundle up for that mummers parade "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast, cool but dry through friday. clouds build in rain arrives late saturday. sun day is mild and rainy and then monday, tuesday wednesday of next week, well, we're all back to reality back to work, back to school it's cold but it is a dry start to next week as well. now we'll send it back to pennsylvania land wrack chris and jessica are preparing to ring in the new year. happy new year guys. >> happy new year to you well, today. we're less than 40 minutes away from the fireworks. keep your eye on the upper right hand corner of your screen. we've got our countdown clock there. 37 minutes to go.
