kathy. >> hello there happy new year. we are looking at cold conditions tonight it was a easenablely cold day but it was wind that was such a problem. good newts as i look behind me sunnies setting but still light the out there the days, slowly but surely getting longer in this new year. look at the the temperatures right new in philadelphia 40 29 in the poconos. thirty-seven in allentown. trenton and lancaster. and add on that wind from the southwest sustained at 18 miles an hour in philadelphia elsewhere between ten and 15 miles an hour and making it feel much colder. thirty-one in philadelphia. nineteen in the poconos. trenton 29. reading feels like 27. this evening temperatures will fall and will fall slowly but surely through the 30's. wind will keep those temperatures up through late night hours and it will be just a few cloud in the skies. high cloud. coming up we will talk about that week even weather, we have rain coming up, a very brief warm up if you blink you may miss it and then back to blustery. we will see how cold these temperatures will get in that

"eyewitness news" justin finch is live at 17th and callowhill street where that assault happened in broad daylight today, justin. >> reporter: that is right jessica. police just left here a short time ago taking with them several bags of evidence, evidence collected at the second level of this parking garage just behind me here, they spent hours up there, hoping that what they found today will help lead them to the man that they say attacked a woman in that garage in broad daylight. philadelphia police crime scene investigators canvas this parking garage on callowhill and 17th, on that second level just before 11:00 a.m., authorities report a three three-year old woman was sexually assaulted. her attacker an unknown man somehow got away.

"eyewitness news". >> justin, thank you. police in delaware county are investigating an early morning shooting that left one man dead. officers responded to the scene on the 400 block of cohain street in chester around 1:00 a.m. victim's mother tells "eyewitness news" her 22-year old son was shot and killed trying to break up a fight. >> whoever took my son's life, you don't have to worry about me coming after you, you got to worry about god, because god will have his revenge on you. >> reporter: chester police have in the released victim's identity and that shooting remains under investigation. meanwhile philadelphia police are searching for person responsible for the city's first homicide of 2015, investigators arrived at the scene on the 5800 block of north philip street around 5:00 this morning. the authorities say that the 19 year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene. no word on motive or description of the shooter. "eyewitness news" has exclusive video this afternoon of a hospital patient at

lankenau medical center who tried to steel a van. authorities tell us that the unidentified patient was still in his hospital gown and still had an iv in his arm when he crashed an aramark van earlier this morning. police say the patient was then air lifted to the hospital of the university of pennsylvania, and with serious injuries. fire investigators are trying to find out what sparked a massive warehouse fire in burlington county. as "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabao the fire forced some neighbors out of their home overnight. >> reporter: fire works like no other in mount holly on new years morning a vacant warehouse on holeman street goes up in flames and sent some living in neighboring homes living in the street. >> what a way to start out 2015. they evacuated everybody house. >> reporter: fire started around 3:30 and took fire fighters five hours to contain. vacant building was once home to the arrow safety device company that manufactured

lights forecaster. what was left up side may have provided accelerant. >> the section that burned housed a machine shop and had all wood floors, that had been soaked in oil throughout the years. >> we could drop over to a house next door or whatever. >> reporter: three alarm fire did spread to two vacant homes and a church but crews were able to save those buildings. by late morning wear house roof was gone and several walls had collapsed, fortunately in one was injured. >> homeless people will look for a vacant building when it is cold like this, to the best of our knowledge nobody was in the building when fire broke out. >> reporter: fire officials say this warehouse was in line for demolition and new that process will be sped up tremendously with the demolition crews expect to return to the scene, later on today. reporting from mount holly jan carabao for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". if you fill up in pennsylvania you may notice an increase at the price of the pump. state's new gas tax took effect at midnight raising wholesale prices by 10 cents a gallon. we did some checking and found

a gallon of regular cost 2.54 a gallon in pennsylvania, and in new jersey it business 30 cents cheaper and comes in at $2.27 a gallon and drivers in dell will wear pay 2.4 $2. extra money from the pennsylvania tax will be used to help pay for state transportation projects. tonight "eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhry takes a closer look at one of the highest gas taxes in the country. a new year, a new gas tax increase. a wholesale tax on gas has gone up nearly 10 cents a gallon in pennsylvania. even though oil producing companies are the ones facing the hike it will likely trickle down to consumers something drivers are not happy to hear. >> i'm hoping they don't go ahead and put that 10 cents on the consume tore try to make up for what they are losing. >> this is second step out of three, that will be instituted over next couple years. >> reporter: charles metzger is penndot spokesperson and said first gas hike happened last year and it brought in enough money to fix many

roadways like street road in warminster. >> we were able to provide 800 million-dollar in extra paving and bridge and construction projects to improve pennsylvania's infrastructure. >> reporter: although drivers are enjoying low gas prices right now they say any gas tax increase will hurt their wallets. >> if those three or 4 cents affecting everybody, in the just low income families, everybody. >> reporter: some are willing to travel to new jersey to fill up. >> in one likes a tax increase, so i would my opinion is yeah we don't need one we got enough gas tax in pennsylvania, drive over to new jersey get it for 5 cents cheaper. >> reporter: triple a supports gas tax saying pennsylvania roads are in need of repair. >> it is for everybody's safety on the roadways that we're able to maintain and enhance our transportation infrastructure. series of gas tax increases are expected to bring in $2.3 billion a year in warminster, syma chowdhry for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". certainly adds up, doesn't

36 degrees, and that broke a four three-year old record. friend and family will gather in just a couple hours for a candle light vigil, to remember a gloucester county boy struck and killed by a franklin township police cruiser. ten year-old matthew mccloskey was crossing a street to the friend's house sunday night when the cruiser struck him. vigil is at 7:00 at franklin township sports complex. his funeral will be held tomorrow morning. in new jersey the new year brings a new hire higher minimum wage. at midnight hurley wage jump from 8.25 to 8.38 an hour. rate will rise each year in tandem with the consumer price index which measures inflation. in delaware, minimum wage goes up june 1 from 7.75 to $8.25. 2014 was year of economic recovery for the united states, so what does 2015 have in store for us? money watch's jill wagner takes a look.

$2 a gallon gas is now a reality in much of the united states. triple a predicts prices at the pump will fall about ten more cents in the next few weeks before creeping up in the spring. it could cost a little less to slide too. industry experts expect tickets to drop up to 5 percent in 2015. but americans will continue to send more on food. >> what i think we will see this year in 2015 is grocery prices on the rise. probably four to 6 percent. >> reporter: phil lampearth is supermarket guru.com. he said the drought in california will continue to push price of produce and beef even higher this year. coffee and chocolate prices are also expected to rise again, after a big jolt in 204. but how about the bigger economic picture like jobs and investments. the stock market hit new highs in 2014 and analyst expect this year will bring more of the same. >> we will continue to see dow jones and reach newer highs

and higher highs. >> reporter: unemployment rate is at a six year low and career builder believes companies will ridge in the new year with more job openings. but an improving economy comes at a price. >> interest rates will go up, we know they will go up. >> reporter: federal reserve will likely raise short term interest rates, for the first time since the great recession which would eventually make borrowing money, more expensive. from wall street, jill wagner for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". today is first day college students can submit 2015 federal financial aid applications, that program is known as f free application determines the amount of financial aid students get from three sources the the federal government, state government, and schools. many new laws are in effect for the new year, one of the most notable in delaware teenagers are now banned from using tanning bed. governor markell signed the law making it illegal for anyone under 18 to use beds in a tanning salon even with

kimmel center was one of the best spots to see the mummers parade. a a vip hosted dozens of people on the balcony. meanwhile kim got to enjoy free activities such as face painting balloon art and other events, which were served free hot chocolate. well, i was out at the parade earlier around noon time hour. it was cold but everyone bundled up. they were dance to go keep warm. it was a great day to be outside despite win, it was sunny and dry. we will check with weather watchers to see what they are reporting on this first evening of the new year. we have a lot of reports in the 30's right now. we will start off here barbara lane in willow grove reporting a clear sky and 34 degrees at the moment. farther north up to 35 degrees from eileen mur from gilbertsville. clear sky there beautiful day to start 2015.
