hours after his son andrew cuomo was inaugurated for his second term as governor. in a statement president obama called mario cuomo a determined champion of progressive values and an unflinching voice for tolerance tolerance, inclusiveness, fairness dignity and opportunity. he was known for his large intellect, but his flirtations with the presidency frustrated supporters. marlie hall looks at the career that thrust cuomo into the national stage as an apologetic champion of the left. >> he was a govern in 1983 and served three terms balance 1g 2 consecutive budgets and leading new york through two recessions. cuomo emerged on the national stage in 1984 at the democratic convention in san francisco, delivering the keynote address he highlighted the fail euroures of the reagan presidency.

>> there's despair, mr. president, in the faces you don't see, in the places you don't visit in your shining city. >> reporter: cuomo liked to as he put it campaign in poetry and his eloquence earned him a reputation as one of the democratic party's most respected thinkers. >> peace is better than war because life is better than death. >> reporter: as a roman catholic he was personally opposed to abortion but supported a woman's right to choose and he was against the death penalty which became the major focus of the 1994 race where he lost to republican george pataki. >> i i've surely made mistakes as governor but i'm as proud as can be with what we've accomplished together. >> reporter: he agonized over years whether to run for president the reputation that led to the nickname hamlet on the hudson. he said he optedous because he never believed he was the most

qualified qualified. 16 years later he was back in albany to see his son andrew sworn in as governor. he looked frail at the 2014 election and days later entered the hospital with a heart condition, but first he celebrated his son's re-election where the younger cuomo declared him the father of the modern democratic party. marlie hall, cbs news new york. well much of the nation heads into the first weekend of 2015 under a threat of severe weather. spectators bundled up at the rose parade thursday as the temperature dipped to 33 degrees. just one degree above the record low. a winter storm dumped 17 inches of snow in flagstaff, arizona, bringing kids and families out for a new year's day sledding. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has the weekend forecast. well it has been a rough go, especially across parts of texas into oklahoma. a lot of freezy rain icy travel

over the last couple of days. it's going to continue here friday through saturday morning, especially the corridor up through abilene just reaching oklahoma city. snow coming down on top of it as we head toward the start of the weekend. this whole storm moving very slowly after the east. notice the rain is spreading across the southeast. it turns into thunderstorms as we head toward saturday maybe a touch of severe weather along the gulf coast. it's the main system that will impact the weekend across the east into the mist. from northern missouri up into the great lakes. a lot of warm air out to the eastern end of the storm. that will create a lot of rainfall in places like philly and through d.c. snow corridor three iowa and wisconsin. a big temperature change. warm air in the east for at least one day and the cold will return. bitter chill remains in the middle of the nation f i'm

meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. researchers have recovered at least 16 bodies from the java sea where airasia flight 8501 plunged into the sea on sunday. rough weather, though continues to hamper the effort. tara mergener is in washington. tara, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. de in spite of the weather, crews believe they're getting close to the fuselage. the few bodies they found are being returned to their hometown. at least 17 victims were pulled from the java sea earlier today. six were found by a u.s. navy ship leaving nearly 150 still missing. indonesian investigators say they believe many may still be strapped in their seats in the plane's fuselage. searchers also found more pieces of the plane. several more ships and planes with metal detectors and sensitive listening equipment

arrived. crews will step up their efforts when weather allows. they're scouring an 183-mile area. the airasia flight crashed into the java sea early sunday with 162 people aboard. it with us on a two-hour flight from surabaya indonesia to singapore, when it disappeared from radar almost halfway into the trip. the first victim was buried keeping in line with the tradition. high waves and strong winds are forecast through sunday. strong currents are moving the debris making search difficult. investigators admit they're in a race against time. the longer the search takes, the more bodies will decompose, and the farther debris will drift away. and divers hope to enter the water when conditions improve. there is still no sign of the plane's black boxes. and marie? >> all right. tara mergener in washington. thank you, tara. this morning the chinese

government is being blamed for a deadly stampede in shanghai. 36 people were killed in the stampede at the city's waterfront district just before the start of the new year. families accuse the government for failing to secure the airy where thousands of people were gathered. and the war in syria is becoming more deadly than ever. more than 76,000 people died in the conflict in 2014 and that includes 3,500 children. the figures make last year the most deadly since the uprising against president bashar al assad in 2011. he visited his frontline troops thursday. jeb bush begins the year clear of any business interest that may have interfered with a white house run. the former florida governor stepped down from his board memberships wednesday. jan crawford looks at how he's clearing the decks for a
