> i'm jessica dean. our first snow of the year, won't amount to much but as they say timing is everything. meteorologist kathy orr is tracking the the snow live on the cbs-3 sky deck, kathy. >> that is the problem jessica, the timing of this we have a winter weather advisory in effect. not for the amount of snow but, the timing of the snow for morning commute. you know during rush hour an inch or two of snow can cause big headaches. on storm scan three you have showed us there is the snow, it doesn't look like a lot but we have watches and warnings posted across the u.s. for this. it is an alberta clipper originate nothing alberta canada it moves so fast. winter weather advisory go into effect for southeastern pennsylvania, south jersey and the entire state of delaware. when we're talking about an advisory we have a light accumulation of snow. temperatures in the the 20's and 30's out to the north and west, look at these numbers ten in cleveland. three in chicago. that cold is coming. that is why it is a light fluffy snow. our computer models showing between half inch and almost 2 inches of snow and right the

"eyewitness news" reporter david spunt it was there. >> reporter: corporal brian dickson's widow left the the pike county courthouse with her husband's former collogues by her side. just minutes later, her husband's alleged killer eric frein, left in shackles. >> he expected exactly what he heard. so, i don't think i awe any change in his demeanor. >> reporter: frein's attorney michael weinstein is his goal, to keep the client alive and avoid the death penalty. he admits it won't be easy. the prosecutors brought forward ten witnesses most of them state police officers recounting where they were when dickson and trooper alex

douglass were shot outside of the state police barracks. >> you see the support that exists within the the state police. many of the corporal dickson and trooper douglass co-workers and family members and so forth were all here. >> reporter: for six hours frein was stoic, he watched as prosecutors presented surveillance video, showing trooper douglass pulling himself across the floor after he was shot. video also shows, troopers pulled corporal dickson's body back in the building. the at one point prosecutors presented a letter found on frein's lap top, weeks after the the shooting. the in the letter he apologized to his parents for his views about society, mentioning the word revolution. trooper dug has was not in court today we're told he was home resting and recovering with family and friend. michael winestein eric frein's attorney, says he may ask for a change of venue. next step in the process is an arraignment and it is told that it will happen sometime by the end of the month. reporting from in milford david spun t for cbs-3

"eyewitness news". just released numbers show philadelphia police are winning battle against crime virtually all violent crime has dropped substantially. "eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter broke down numbers and live tonight at police headquarters walt? >> reporter: virtually all of the crime data accumulated by officials here indicate that 2014 was a safe year on the streets of philadelphia. violent crime down way down, and the mayor at a press conference finding that that discovery was something to cheer about. >> philadelphia police department and all members of our first responders deserve a huge round of applause. >> reporter: mayor michael nutter thanked residents as well as police for working together, to cut philadelphia crime in 2014. >> preliminary year in totals for all part crimes are the lowest since 1971. >> reporter: specifically, 248 murders remain the lowest total since 1967 up by one

over last year. 1047 shootings reflecting a overall drop of 7 percent in all violent crime categories. >> we made progress in 2014. i think that is what it shows. >> reporter: police commissioner charles ramsey revealed police involved shootings dropped despite hundreds of a attacks on officers by suspects, carrying thousands of illegal weapons. police involved shootings down 33 percent, fatal shootings by 64 percent, as officers were assaulted 673 times. more than 3200 guns seized. >> it is a question of numbers and fewer people being victimized which is always a positive thing. >> my concern is that even with the numbers down to the lowest level, in many year, there is too many deaths. >> reporter: this community crime fighter says while the crime statistics are encouraging, for crime weary

a gun and pointed it at his fiance and stated to the driver give me everything or i will kill her. as a gunman exited the vehicle, he shot him one time in the head, and killing him instantly. >> reporter: investigators say victims fiance was not physically harmed. also tonight philadelphia a police are looking for a gunman who opened fire at a toys-r-us, in port richmond, it is believed he was there to rob the the store, but when workers would not unlock the doors he fired a shot through the front window. man eventually ran off before police arrived no one was hurt. two people are rushed to the hospital when a home in mantua goes um in flames. their conditions are not being released tonight. fire fighters responded to this row home on the 800 block of north brooklyn street just after 11:00 this morning. they had it under control in ten minutes later but still significant damage was reported and american red cross was called into assist a family of four with food, clothing family from the

cold. developing right new on the cbs-3 healthwatch the already brutal will flu season hasútaken a turn for the worst according to a new update issued by centers for disease control and prevention. >> health reporter stephanie stahl has more flu information. >> it is ramping up, guys. influenza is widespread in 43 states, including all three in our area. that is according to new numbers from the cdc today and with all of the traveling and togetherness over the holidays many doctors are expecting a spike now that people are back to work and school. hospital emergency rooms are filling up with people worried that they have the flu. >> it is concerning because a lot of these patients are coming in and they have been vaccinated. >> reporter: delaware is hard hit, there are 632 confirmed cases, this time last year there were just 70. pennsylvania has over 10,000 people with the flu so far and 16 deaths, new jersey doesn't track flu numbers. flu epidemic is blame in part on this years vaccines, it may

be only 30 percent effective but the main stream influenza that is circulating now h3n2 is not i good match to the vaccine. >> in the average year we will see effectiveness of the vaccine at 50 to 70 percent. so it might be lower this year but even fit is lower it may provide some protection especially important in people at high risk. >> reporter: the virus tend to cause more severe illness in very young children and elderly. flu related hospitalizations for elderly are more than double what they were this time last year. doctors say anyone at high risk for flu complications should get anti viral medications like tamiflu. >> in general it cuts a day off symptoms. >> today's report from the cdc covering the week of christmas we are expecting updated numbers from delaware and pennsylvania tomorrow. there are probably a lot more sick people out there, not everyone with the flu has lab testing or even goes to the doctor but they say if you think you might have a flu do

one of the victims was knocked unconscious and had to be taken to the hospital. if you think you can help identify these attackers cat police. former philadelphia sportscaster don tollefson rejects a last minute deal triggering the start of the fraud and theft trial in bucks county. the deal included a two to 20 year sentence with a treatment program that would have reduced his time in jail. he is accused of stealing $340,000 intended for sports trips benefiting charity. all but two alternate jurors were chosen to day. tollefson doesn't regret his deis to withdraw his guilty plea last month. >> there is no bad guys in this case. >> the the facts are the facts what this really is a story of how you reach for the stars and fell to the earth. i just looking forward to the opportunity, as mr. goldman says to tell my side of the story the the trial will begin with jury selection is completed tomorrow and tollefson is a recovering drug and alcohol addict spent most of last year under house
