part of the afternoon just in a very light nature. as far as how much snow fell, most of us, once again, picking up an inch or two across the area. that was just about it. williamstown 1.4 inches. vineland 1.2, in philadelphia first inch of snow this season and in ewing, new jersey picking up .7 inches. now temperatures pretty cold. poconos 13. philadelphia 24. allentown 19. but it will get even colder. i want to show you snow covered streets of sea isle city this sent from our eyewitness campaign drew, thanks for that picture. that is the scene across the region. we have had the the snow now the cold. this is what it will feel like tomorrow morning at 8:00 a a.m. feeling like 14 in philadelphia, one in the poconos and eight in allentown. fast forward to that tomorrow evening 19b low in the poconos, three in philadelphia and one below in trenton and then, by the the evening, 13 below in the poconos thursday morning, rather, in wilmington, one below in atlantic city by thursday

norristown david. >> reporter: chris, there is a code blue here in montgomery county, we will explain exactly what that is in just a second salvation army behind me here in norristown just one of several homeless shelters in the area crews inside they are getting very busy. they are expecting a busy night ahead with folks coming in and out as temperatures continue to drop. snow blanketed the streets of norristown as staff members at salvation army prepared for a busy night. >> to live in conditions like this it makes it even more difficult. >> reporter: doctor curtis floor with the californiavation army says his staff will do whatever is possible to get as many people out of the cold. >> oh, my goodness, very dangerous. once temperatures get very low, especially if you are sleeping in these kind of conditions it can get pretty dangerous. >> reporter: montgomery county officials issued a code blue tuesday, a warning anytime air temperature or wind chill drops to 20 degrees or below. >> i really wish i was at

home, and not out in it. >> reporter: dana key move to the area from georgia she says that the snow was exciting but cold temperatures now and overnight are concerning. >> i'm a a nervous wreck that everyone around here peoples to know what they are doing. i'm trying to take it the slow. >> reporter: captain nora says the best thing to do is to stay inside, unless you have to go outside. if you don't i have place to stay check out his place, or other local shelters. >> my heart goes to anyone who is dwelling this type of a situation. >> reporter: the salvation army in norristown separated women and children and men in two separate sections. county officials said last time they had a code blue was last week december 30th through january 2nd. we are live from norristown david spunt for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". we do know at the peak of this bad weather one person was killed in the crash in cherry hill we're told as many a as five cars were involved in this i it all happened on haddonfield berlin

more. >> reporter: thirteen week old carlos is hospitalized at abington health with the flu and pneumonia. >> the younger you are the weaker your immune system the more likely you are to have secondary complications. >> i went in there and they told me but i have to be strong for him. >> reporter: carlos is too young for a flu shot but his mom made sure everybody else got a vaccine. the the problem is this years vaccine is only about 30 percent effective and influenza is now an epidemic. >> it is very easily spread and can live in surfaces for hours. you are not in direct contact with someone if they have touched something recently you may still be able to capture it. >> reporter: carlos's mom says family has been out recently. >> maybe one of the trips that he we went out or during the holidays probably he got something from there. >> reporter: baby was among more than 270 patients seen in abington's emergency department on monday alone, so busy that the hospital went on a temporary divert status which rarely happens here.

during an attack in center city philadelphia is speaking out. police need your help as they look for the suspects. "eyewitness news" reporter steve paterson is at central detectives with more, steve. >> reporter: chris, another vicious, center sit a tack caught on camera this time it leaves victim with the traumatic brain injury, we spoke to that man today and says it will be a long road to recovery but he has a surprisingly positive outlook. listen to this. >> see how many milligrams they are. >> reporter: one to stop the seizures, one to ease the pain. >> it is pretty painful. >> reporter: you cannot see his injuries, 34 year-old sam says he has to take several pills to get through a day of searing headaches and an episode that could cause serious damage. >> my ears have a ringing sensation and then my head again just has the physical pain. >> reporter: this week police released surveillance video of sam in the early hours of december 27th. he is walking from his job as

a doorman at tabu warmth he and his manager walking near 12th street in chestnut. in the video you can see group of five men and women approach, words are exchange before two men break away from the group and start pummeling sierra. police say they were looking for a fight. >> it is just unfortunate that you have individuals like these two gentlemen that were in this group walking around looking to assault someone. >> reporter: sierra was beaten so badly the internal bleeding in his skull left him hospitalized for a week. he only remembers the last three days. >> i hope that they are captured. certainly. >> reporter: now back home sierra says he has a long, costly road to recovery including more tests, pills and hospital visits but despite all that he is thankful. >> i mean i could get angry but at the end of the day i still have my life. >> reporter: police released a basic description of the 29 suspects involved in that fight, suspects you can see in the video, one a white male of middle eastern dissent, 20

officers. officials say that the officers were responding to an armed robbery last night at a grocery store in the bronx when one of the suspects opened fire, from inside of a restaurant. >> these officered had come off of their shift and upon hearing this call, went back out in search of these criminals. this is an absolutely a case of officers gonna above and beyond the call. >> both officers are hospitalized, and expected to recover. well, new year brings a big shake up in montgomery county politics. as "eyewitness news" reporter first reported the long time d.a. risa vetri furhman will not run for reelection, tonight, she talks with him about her decision and her future. >> reporter: in the long line of montgomery county prosecutors she's the first female ever but after being sworn in for two terms d.a. risa furhman says that she won't be running again. >> i decided after 23 years it is time for me to do something different. >> reporter: instead of being seen behind the podium

be i'm a protecter. >> reporter: d.a. furhman hoping as judge furhman, she will be able to do her job even better. at the montgomery county courthouse, walt hunter cbs-3 "eyewitness news". investigators are looking for the the cause of an overnight fire that forced a south philadelphia a family out into the cold. it started around 2:45 in the morning in the 2200 block of south lambert street. fire fighters had flames under control within about a half an hour, we spoke to one neighbor who rushed outside when he heard all of the commotion. >> i just woke up, looking out window and i seen all these flames. there was a fire that came out of the house. >> reporter: authorities tell us one person was injured but it doesn't appear to be a serious injury. red cross was on hand to provide assistance for that family. still to come here tonight as one big hollywood star walks down the aisle another becomes a mom. christmas may be over but some of the big and best sales

well, kathy orr you said sweepable snow and indeed it swept right out of the way. light as a feather. >> yep yep, just brush it right off. >> no troubles, shoveling. shake it off. >> as they say. >> now we're in for the the cold. i really do think that the cold will be the bigger story of the week. we're not just talking about bitterly cold but we're talking about dangerous cold as we head toward thursday with these wind chills. we will talk more about that but first lets take a look outside where there was a fresh coating of snow, about an inch in the poconos. jack frost big boulder taking a break from making it and it was provided by mother nature, looking good, good skiing conditions coming up this weekend as well. lets talk a little bit about the snow this morning. the our live neighborhood network takes to us bishop eustace in pennsauken and then we saw the snow moving in early. then accumulating about an inch on the field. kid still went outside and had some practice. the temperature 21 degrees a light fluffy snow. wind north at 5 miles an hour. our eyewitness weather

watchers are reporting some snow as well. ed heaton is saying 2.2 in chester county. bellmawr, 1.6. chris is in easton with 1.2 inches of snow and george in middletown, delaware 1 inch. not a huge amount of snow temperatures still very cold. average high temperature for this time of the year is 40 degrees. look at the temperature today in philadelphia, 24. it is 19 in allentown. only 13 in the poconos. we are talking about everything staying frozen, and a little bit slippery during the the overnight hours. right now in philadelphia 24 degrees but it could be worse. buffalo is at 16. chicago at seven. minneapolis five. bismarck is only three. the good news is that we're not going to get that cold during the day time. in the wake of our storm or our clipper we are going to see a reenforcing shot of cold air. arctic front descending and that means wind out of the northwest gusting to 40 miles an hour tomorrow. temperatures in the 20's. so tomorrow, a little bit milder, then today, in the mid 20's but the wind, it is going

to be brutal and that will make all of the difference in the world. then the core of the cold air, and the wind, descend upon us on thursday morning. high temperatures barely making it in the 20's. it is going to be a real difficult dangerous day a as far as wind chill. and then friday we will rebound, high pressure to the south, temperatures in the 30's. still well below normal in temperature but it will begin to feel more comfortable. during the overnight skies will be mostly cloudy, low of around 20 degrees, teens in the suburbs. tomorrow wind kick up and chance of a few scattered snow showers, localized snow squall isn't out of the question either. the high temperature 26 degrees. looking fine that wind gusting at 40 and we have wind chills that will be in the teens. wind chill advisory will go into effect for the the poconos tomorrow evening, through thursday morning and we are talking about wind chills in the poconos between 15 and 20 below. that is frigid. in lehigh rally this is thursday morning, wind chills between ten and 15 below even

we are tracking bitter blast of winter. take a look at this video from havertown delaware county. wet road with a few wet spots forced drivers to be on alert. salt trucks have had a very busy day. in philadelphia's spring garden neighborhood those out and about had to be very careful under foot. they were bundled up too. it is chilly out there and it is only going to get colder kate? that is right, chris. we are here in the overbrook farms section of the city. if you are not familiar it the is in a little corner created by city avenue and lancaster avenue and you can see on the side streets here we are still completely snow covered right now, we have seen folks out and about shoveling their sidewalks, shoveling their driveways, putting salt down. there is a solid 2 inches of snow in this part of the city and now it looks like it will be here for a while. temperatures will not the rise above freezing again until at least friday. take a look at what we can expect a bitter blast of cold

"eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhry is live in south philadelphia with more syma. >> reporter: that is right guess contact falling price of oil is really helping out a lot of residents who rely on to it warm their homes. we have followed an oil company today that was making delivery to very happy homeowners here in south fit. i'm shocked it is some so cheap. >> reporter: heywood brown warms his home using oil. so far this season has been good to him with mild temperatures but more importantly the low price of heating oil. in fact oil prices have hit a six year low. >> get more oil now. >> reporter: brown pays $2.59 a gallon and that is about a

dollar less a gallon compared to last year. >> last year you may have had a struggle to keep the house warm. i got five kid in the house. it was a struggle. >> reporter: while he enjoys forking over less money companies like oil patch enjoys getting more business. >> instead of getting 50 gallons or hundred gallons they are filling their tanks. before they could only get a little oil. >> reporter: standard home tank hold 275 gallons of oil. now customers can get more for less. >> people are happy. they come out and say thanks. we appreciate what you guys are doing, price is so low. we are able to afford to fill our tank. >> reporter: oil patchwork with the state's low income energy assistance program. with lower oil prices those who need help can heat their homes with confidence. >> they are able to have their whole tanks filled. they never had that much oil ever. they can get 120 gallons, now they are getting 250 gallons. >> reporter: fred says he feels bad for customers who locked in last years prices and now cannot get out of those contracts. >> they paid a lot higher.

they paid $1.25 a gallon more. >> reporter: some more good news for those who are not locked into contracts, oil patch expects the price of oil to continue to fall in the next few weeks. we are live from south philadelphia, syma chowdhry for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". same, thanks very much. a federal judge sentenced former virginia governor bob mcdone toll two years in prison. jury convicted mcdonnell and his wife maureen back in september. the the mcdonnell's were found guilty of trading favors for more than $165,000 worth of gifts and loans from a businessman in richmond. mcdonnell, a republican, was once touted as a possible presidential contender. >> i disagree with the verdict that was rendered by the jury in this case and that we intend to file our a appeal. >> the the prosecution had sought a ten year prison term.

international airport this shot here is around 420. traveling north bound not too much of a problem but heading southbound approaching 420 down to 320 will be. if you are heading to the airport right now because of the weather, the the ice and snow they are reporting close to three hour delays. definitely call ahead there as we look at our speed sensors they are dropping, 17 is your average on i-95 in either direction between northeast philadelphia and center city. i would say traveling southbound some of that volume stemming into bucks county. forty-eight, not so much on the schuylkill, maybe for a short amount of time but in areas specifically around the curve eastbound i would say specifically, is where you will drop down speed sensors in the teens and in some areas less than that. as we move along into delaware i-95 northbound all lanes are closed as a result of the accident just beyond delaware avenue. commuting in this area you will be stuck. your best alternate to take 495, traveling 495, and even our area bridges they have speed restrictions.
