>> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". now at 11:00 a bitter blast a deep freeze has set in after dark as plunging temperatures freeze roadways across the area tonight. it was a snowy scene all day long as the first flakes of 2015 fell blanketing the city and the suburbs.

good evening to you i'm jessica dean. >> i'm chris may. we have team three coverage of this bitter blast. diana rocco has her eye on how low the temperatures will go, and how they'll affect roads cars and homes. but we'll begin with meteorologist kathy orr and the freezing night that's ahead. kathy. >> chris, temperatures are falling so fast we're talking about well below freezing and going down into the teens some single numbers overnight tonight tonight. on storm scan3 a partly cloudy sky. become see the clouds rolling back in fairly quickly from the west. we have another weak disturbance that reinforce that cold air overnight. take look at these temperature. 18 degrees in philadelphia. 16 degrees in allentown. the poconos it is 10. but colder air to the north and west. in chicago nine. right now in cleveland it's 12. it feels much colder. when that reinforcing shot moves in overnight and into tomorrow, we are going to be feeling the effects with some brutal winds. overnight temperatures will range between 10 and 20 degrees those roads will refreeze even anything that is melted due to treatment will be very icy

overnight tonight. they'll be slick spots icy patches come tomorrow morning so please take it easy and use caution. the big part of the story is going to be the wind when you combine the wind with the temperatures, you're talking about an arctic blast. temperatures will be 15 to 20 degrees below average combined that with whipping winds gusting to 30 even 40 miles an hour over the next couple of days. and take a look the what it will be feeling like. tonight reading in the teens. tomorrow morning it will feel like 13 in philadelphia. two below in the poconos. but by tomorrow night, 8:00 p.m., it will feel like 22 below in the poconos and it will get even colder than this by thursday. coming up we'll talk about what's to come when it gets even colder snow showers in the forecast again possibly as early as tomorrow and wind chills going below zero. more on that coming up later in the broadcast. for now we'll zen it back to you. that's enough for now. >> we'll take it. kathy, thanks very much. well you can stay on top of the winter weather by downloading the cbs philly

"eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco is live in center city tonight. diana? >> reporter: jessica remnants of this storm still remain on some cars and on the streets and on sidewalks tonight but now the attention has turned to the dropping temperatures and icy roads causing problems. the snow may have stopped but what's left over has become the big concern. messy side streets and freezing temperatures creating a sheet of ice and making roads a very slippery surface. it started coming down early tuesday making for slow travel and leaving commuters slipping and sliding. spin outs and accidents caused traffic backups throughout the morning commute. in cherry hill one person was killed in a five-car accident before 10am on haddonfield-berlin road.

24th and walnut icy conditions force add car into storefront in center city philadelphia. tow trucks were busy and so was aaa. fielding a high number of calls when cars wouldn't start. >> what many motorists don't realize the he can treatment cold temperatures especially what we've seen today and what we'll concern the rest of the week are extremely harsh on a car battery. >> reporter: in this freezing cold, triple a says keeping that emergency kit in your car could be live saving. home heating companies were also receiving a high volume of calls calls. >> wanted to prepare knowing it was going to get cold, this wasn't kicking in. >> reporter: bill roth' heat was touch and go with three kids they didn't want to risk spending the night in the cold. >> not wanting to wake up having three kids not wanting them to have to worry about anything. so, yes, especially with it this cold. >> reporter: heating technician doug says this time of year is when heaters start breaking and he make it a priority to get to calls quickly. >> the temperature only has to get to the low of 33 and a pipe

can freeze and cause all kinds of problems. >> reporter: and as we head into the overnight hours black ice is a major concern on roadways throughout the area, in fact the state police have called in extra tow truck drivers to be on hand in case of accidents come morning. we're live in center city tonight, i'm diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> diana thank you. officials are concerned about the well-being of the area's homeless with these temperatures dropping. code blue alerts are in effect across the region. some people in money county are being accept to this salvation army location in norristown. it's just one shelter available to help people get out of the cold. we also have some tips for dealing with this dangerous cold on cbsphilly.com. this cold weather usually comes at a cost for homeowners who use heating oil. brown is one of them but this year he's getting a lot more for a lot less. falling fuel prices mean he's paying 2.59 a gallon about a

developing at 11:00 o'clock tonight, a violent attack in a texas veterans clinic. one person was killed when a gunman opened fire inside that clinic on for bliss in el paso. the gunman is also dead tonight. it's unclear whether he was shot by officers or took his own life. the fbi is leading that investigation right now the motive for the violence is not clear. paramedic meet a southwest airlines jet at the gate at philadelphia international airport tonight. southwest airlines flight 4817 from nashville to philadelphia hit some turbulent in the air and a flight attendant was injured. the pilot called ahead asked for paramedic to meet them at the gate and the flight attendant was taken to the hospital. 134 passengers and four other crew members were on board. but no one else was hurt. we're hearing tonight from one of the victims seriously injured during an attack in center city. samuel sierra is just out of the hospital. he spent a week after a savage

beating at 12th and chestnut nearly could have his his life. surveillance video from december december 27th shows him walking from his job as a door man at taboo bar along with his manager. you'll see a group approach the pair. words were he can changed two men suddenly broke away from the group and started pump ming see err ya causing bleeding in the brain. >> ears start to have a kind of ringing sensation and then my head again just has the physical pain. i hope they are captured certainly. at the end of the day i would hope they would become better adults but it's still up to them to make those decisions for themselves. >> anyone with information about this attack is asked to call philadelphia police. funeral services for shane montgomery have now been set for friday. tonight we're learning more about a special group of volunteer divers who finally found shane's body and brought his family some closure. our todd quinones has an "eyewitness news" exclusive. report. >> this is called the rescue

truck. >> reporter: 5984 old diver andy pasquale who found shane's body at the bottom of the schuylkill river. he was running low on air but decided to look a little longer. >> doing a ball zigzag pattern just you know, looking around, and then i came up on shane. it was in a current. so i held on to him. i put my hand on him. so we didn't go away in the current just because i didn't want to lose him. >> reporter: 21-year-old disappeared after leaving a manayunk pub early thanksgiving morning. bag quality is a volunteer for garden state underwater recover unit they're based in milford new jersey budget comes struckly from donations. they pick up the searches throughout the region and beyond typically after police and rescue divers have to move on leaving family members no one to turn to to help find their loved one. >> we have members that are doctors, that are pharmacists. that are plumbers, carpenters --

montgomery county's first full service center for abuseed children is among her proudest accomplishment. new tonight moorestown new jersey swears in the youngest person ever to serve as the township's mayor. 26-year-old council woman victoria napalitano took the oath of office tonight. her husband was there to hold the bible during the oath. the township council is republican and member of the majority rotate holding the mayor's seat. the mayor is in her first term and says it is an honor to serve serve. >> very exciting for me. you know, to have more women in politics especially young women is really important to me and something that i hope i can be -- i hope i can be a role model for other young women who are considering stepping into the political arena. >> mayor napal ton know her number one priority is passing a budget that does not increase taxes this year. history was also made on capitol hill as new 114th congress convened.

hard fought high school basketball game between bitter rifles ends in a brawl in harrisburg. just as the buzzer sounded to end the game between york and harrisburg a couple of players under the basket exchanged punches and that led to this full out fight. parents and police came on to the court. they tried to restore order. as players wrestled and grabbed one another. one player was punched and collapsed on the floor. there's no word on if any of the players involved in that brawl will be suspended. a pair of suspects facing charge that is night in the shootings of two new york city plane clothes police officers. today the nypd released this surveillance video showing one of the suspects firing on those officers. officials say that the officers were responding to an armed robbery last night at a grocery store in the bronx when one of the suspects opened fire from inside that restaurant. both of those officers are expected to be okay. new information tonight about the growing number of

people suffering with the flu in our area. there are now more than a thousand confirmed cases in the state of delaware. last year at this time there were 100 cases. pennsylvania department of health says there are now nearly 1,000 cases confirmed in just montgomery county, and abington hospital is reportedly in the middle of a hot zone. now you can get all the information you need on the flu on our website there's an overview a list of symptoms, also risk factors. you can also get some tips on preventing the flu. just go to cbsphilly.com click on health, then flu. nass' latest trip to space will have to wait at least a few more days. this morning engineers had to port a space x launch because of a problem with one of the rock's motors. they hope to have everything fixed for their second attempt on friday. the unmanned mission will carry supplyies and experiments to the international space station some of which are from students in new jersey. well tonight a peek into the past a time capsule from 1795 was opened in boston today.

>> inside that time capsule were five folded newspapers, a massachusetts commonwealth seal, coins and a silver plate commemorating the 20th anniversary of american independence. now this was found back in december in a cornerstone of the massachusetts state house. it had been buried there reportedly by paul revere and samuel adams. the unearthed items will now be on display at boston's museum of fine are as. it is cold out there. >> okay. bitterly cold night out there. the snow was just kind of the opening act in mother nature's weather phenomenon. kathy orr has been tracking this bitter blast headed our way now. kathy we better have many layers on. >> very cold this afternoon. turning even colder. our i wet weather watchers are showing us numbers that are really unbelievable. not for this time of year, but since it's been relatively mild take a lock at a few of these. right now 10 degrees being roared in doylestown irwin says

the wind is light. snowfall today about an inch and a half. elsewhere pretty cold as well to the north and west of philadelphia. the temperature 14 being roared in willow grove. skies are clear and the pressure is falling. another front will reinforce the cold overnight. and it is 17 degrees right now as we head toward chester county county. john is reporting 17 degrees in downingtown. if you would like to be an "eyewitness weather" watcher this winter or even come spring you can sign up today. it's very easy. join the team. go to cbsphilly.com/watchers. temperatures have been falling very quickly. and we are seeing the snow guns in full mowing at jack frost big boulder even at this late hour. you can see the chair lift continues to go as they are getting ready for a big week of snow making with these cold temperatures. temperatures will stay below freezing for the next 62 hours at least. take look at this. we'll start off at the current time through wednesday afternoon, thursday afternoon

until friday afternoon we will stay below freezing. and that means when you combine the wind with these temperatures it will feel like it is dangerously cold well below zero. right now in philadelphia the temperature is 19. it is only seven in millville. it is 10 in the poconos. reading only 12 degrees. we're watching the core of the cold air you can see through the northern plains and also southern canada can in a winnipeg 13 below. minute list one the winds have impacted this par of the country. it feels like 34 below in international falls and minneapolis it is feels like 18 below. won't be quite that cold here but close to philadelphia it will be 18 below and i'll show you that in a minute but first tomorrow the cold gets reinforced. winds gust to 40 miles an hour and wind chills will be in the teens. thursday this will be the coldest day we've seen since last winter. wind chills go below zero everywhere. even the shore. and by friday temperatures rebound to about 30 degrees. not quite as harsh.

during the day tomorrow with that reinforcing shot of cold air a few snow showers are possible. this is 7:00 o'clock in the morning. they will be scattered and during the afternoon between 2:00 and sick or 7:00 a few more spotty snow showers so please be aware of that. as we look ahead a wind chill advisory goes into effect tomorrow night because wind chills will be dangerously cold in the poconos. how cold? how about 15 to 20 below there? even in the lehigh valley 10 to 15 below. in philadelphia, thursday morning wind chills between five and 10 below and even down the shore between zero and five below zero. we are definitely not used to that around here. overnight low temperature in the city 20 but we've already seen teens and single numbers in our suburbs. tomorrow very windy, scattered snow showers temperatures in the 20s. wind chills in the teens. as we look ahead on the exclusive "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast, this brutal cold will continue through thursday night even friday morning. but then the winds begin to relax by saturday, the temperature near 30. sunday a little bit better at
