breakthrough in the search for the wreck ang of airasia flight 8501. crews have found the tail section of the airbus a320 the most significant part of the plane that fell into the java sea last month. brian webb is here in new york with details. brian, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. finding the tail is incredibly important because this is where the black boxes are located. indonesia's search and rescue chief says it was first discovered by an echo sounder before divers went to the spot and snapped these photos. the word "airasia" clearly visible. officials say it was pointing toward the seabed and near the same cord nanlts as when the plane lost contact. divers now looking in the same area for the fuselage hoping to recover more bodies. so far 40 have been found. it is still not clear what

brought down the plane, but bad weather is believed to be a contributing factor. anne-marie? >> brian webb here in new york. thank you very much brian. in yemen now, a suicide bomber driving a mini bus packed with explosives kill at least 30 people. the massive blast could be heard across the city. it attacked a group gathering to enroll in the police academy. there's no immediate claim of responsibility. and now to the bitterly cold weather that's sweeping over most of the country. this morning another round of freezing arctic air and snow is heading east. the high in minneapolis today is expected to be minus 1. public schools there and in chicago are closed today. two-thirds of the country will see unusually cold temperatures including the south. in west virginia yesterday, the freezing temperatures made for dangerous driving. one car flipped and ended up in a creek. the driver escaped though.

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says all this cold will be followed by more cold. >> it is cold just about everywhere right now. the really cold air, the core of it coming down as we head through wednesday, across the midwest and down to the deep south. there's another one lined up behind it. more arctic air coming on down. windchill advisories up for at least parts of 31 states so many being affected by as cold of temperatures as 50 below zero in places like minnesota and wisconsin. here are the conditions down south. then we head into thursday morning, which is going to be the coldest for many. you've got a windchill of 2 below and 8 in tallahassee, florida, subzero in charlotte and everyone feeling the brunt of the colder air since last winter. the divide is by the rockies.

if you want to escape this, they were in the 80s in socal yesterday and forecast as high of 80 in houston and texas. all the way into north cal and 50s. i'm eric fisher for cbs news. no significant damage is reported following an earthquake outbreak in texas. nine hit the suburb of irving in less than 24 hours. the latest hit early this morning. the strongest had a magnitude of 3.6, enough to rattle the inside of homes. the area has seen a series of quakes in recent months. these were the largest. so far though, no injuries are reported. >> and this morning it's unclear why a gunman opened fire at a veterans facility yesterday. the doctor and alleged gunman were killed. the clinic is located near the william beaumont army medical

price of oil fell again this weekend. yesterday the price of crude dropped below $48 a barrel. that is the lowest since april 2009 2009. oil prices have dropped 47% in the last three months. stocks took another step back from last year's record-breaking highs. the dow lost 130 points. that follows monday's 330-point drop. the s&p fell just under 18 and the nasdaq fell 59 points lower. asian stocks are higher despite swoirs over the falling drop in oil prices. a former partner and headphone owner beats by lek tropics said he was swindled out of a big payday by rapper dre.

will try to figure out what caused a skydiving plane's engine to fail. all 13 people aboard are safe this morning after dramatic escape as the plane was going down. sophie lowery of tv3 new zealand reports. >> reporter: this is not the view that causes skydivers to dive from a plane. just before half past 12 a flight took off from an airport. this is the plane's view showing the path they took. they hit what the company describes as an engine problem and the plane started to dive. >> big explosion in the air. it was a tandem sky dive plane. i knew it was straight in trouble straight away. >> there were 13 people on board. police say they were the pilot and six passengers that were going out to tandem sky dive with six crew members.

as the plane plummeted, everybody jumped for their lives and deployed safely to shore. >> parachuting down. yeah, i think the pilot, he must have been the last one to get blackberries. >> witnesses raced out to help. >> three or four to start with and then word got around and then more people very the commission has sent three investigators to toe pore to speak to them. >> close to the shore. we've got a salvage team that's on its way to get the wreckage out and get it here where we can do an inspection of it. >> reporter: the whole investigation could take a year and a half but the great ef relief is that everybody is around to tell their stories to the investigator.
