breakthrough in the search for the wreck ang of airasia flight 8501. crews have found the tail section of the airbus a320 the most significant part of the plane that fell into the java sea last month. brian webb is here in new york with details. brian, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. finding the tail is incredibly important because this is where the black boxes are located. indonesia's search and rescue chief says it was first discovered by an echo sounder before divers went to the spot and snapped these photos. the word "airasia" clearly visible. officials say it was pointing toward the seabed and near the same cord nanlts as when the plane lost contact. divers now looking in the same area for the fuselage hoping to recover more bodies. so far 40 have been found. it is still not clear what

brought down the plane, but bad weather is believed to be a contributing factor. anne-marie? >> brian webb here in new york. thank you very much brian. in yemen now, a suicide bomber driving a mini bus packed with explosives kill at least 30 people. the massive blast could be heard across the city. it attacked a group gathering to enroll in the police academy. there's no immediate claim of responsibility. and now to the bitterly cold weather that's sweeping over most of the country. this morning another round of freezing arctic air and snow is heading east. the high in minneapolis today is expected to be minus 1. public schools there and in chicago are closed today. two-thirds of the country will see unusually cold temperatures including the south. in west virginia yesterday, the freezing temperatures made for dangerous driving. one car flipped and ended up in a creek. the driver escaped though.

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says all this cold will be followed by more cold. >> it is cold just about everywhere right now. the really cold air, the core of it coming down as we head through wednesday, across the midwest and down to the deep south. there's another one lined up behind it. more arctic air coming on down. windchill advisories up for at least parts of 31 states so many being affected by as cold of temperatures as 50 below zero in places like minnesota and wisconsin. here are the conditions down south. then we head into thursday morning, which is going to be the coldest for many. you've got a windchill of 2 below and 8 in tallahassee, florida, subzero in charlotte and everyone feeling the brunt of the colder air since last winter. the divide is by the rockies.

if you want to escape this, they were in the 80s in socal yesterday and forecast as high of 80 in houston and texas. all the way into north cal and 50s. i'm eric fisher for cbs news. no significant damage is reported following an earthquake outbreak in texas. nine hit the suburb of irving in less than 24 hours. the latest hit early this morning. the strongest had a magnitude of 3.6, enough to rattle the inside of homes. the area has seen a series of quakes in recent months. these were the largest. so far though, no injuries are reported. >> and this morning it's unclear why a gunman opened fire at a veterans facility yesterday. the doctor and alleged gunman were killed. the clinic is located near the william beaumont army medical

center near ft. bliss. the fbi which is leading the investigation has hundreds of witnesses, many of them patients. last year a federal audit found this clickic had some of nation's longest wait times. >> in colorado springs the fbi is searching for a man who may be connected to a bomb that went off outside a local naacp office. the bomb exploded yesterday next door to the group's building. no one was injured and there's minor damage. it's unclear whether the civil rights group was the target. the new year in washington is starting out a little like the old one. the 114th congress is one day old and already it's running into a head-on veto showdown with the white house. add issue is the much delaying excel keystone pipeline. good morning, mark. >> good morning, mark. it's so important to the republicans it's known as senate bill 1 the first bill filed in

price of oil fell again this weekend. yesterday the price of crude dropped below $48 a barrel. that is the lowest since april 2009 2009. oil prices have dropped 47% in the last three months. stocks took another step back from last year's record-breaking highs. the dow lost 130 points. that follows monday's 330-point drop. the s&p fell just under 18 and the nasdaq fell 59 points lower. asian stocks are higher despite swoirs over the falling drop in oil prices. a former partner and headphone owner beats by lek tropics said he was swindled out of a big payday by rapper dre.

noel lee once held a 5% stake in beats. he was forced out before the sail. the suit alleges lee lost tens of millions of dollars. the majority of americans have no emergency savings according to a just released survey. 62% of those questioned by bankrate.com say they wouldn't have have money for something like an emergency room visit or major car repair. most say they would raise money by cutting back elsewhere, borrowing from family, or using credit cards. and as healthy living takes a bite out of mcdonald's they're looking to provide lighter meals. they recently opened this restaurant called the corner by mccafe. it sevs up healthy food like fresh food and tofu. there are no fries on the menu.

forecast in some cities around the country. some new jersey democratic lawmakers are considering an investigation into governor chris christie's ties with dallas cowboys owner jerry jones. christie was a guest of jones' during dallas's playoff victory over detroit sunday. according to a report in "wall street journal" jones is part owner of a company that scored a contract with the port authority of new york and new jersey which christie jointly controls. christie said the governor is allowed to accept kbifts from personal friends. on tuesday four former stars of the baseball diamond were elected into the hall of fachlt pitchers randy johnson, pedro martinez and john smoltz each made it in their first year on

the ballot. while the wait was a little longer for the houston astros infielder craig biggio. >> i got a phone call at noontime that will forever change my life and my family's life and it was very overwhelming and very emotional. i don't really remember speaking to the people on the phone other than i started crying. >> it was biggio's third year of eligibility. last year he fell just two votes shy of induction. biggio spent his entire 20-year career in houston racking up more than 3,000 hits. he'll be the first to represent the astros in the hall of fame. few pitchers struck fear into the heart of batters like randy johnson. the towering 6'10" lefty won cy awards. >> i never join add fraternity in college and now i'm among the one of the coolest in the world.

>> pedro martinez is the shortest pitcher to be inducted since '74. he used a dancing fastball to win three cy young awarding and he was the boston red sox ace in 2004 when the team won its first world series in 86 years. martinez said he's glad he pitched during what was known as baseball's steroid era. >> i wouldn't want it any other way. i wanted to be the best i could beer time i went out there. >> and right-handed pitcher john smoltz made his mark appearing in 25 playoff series. smoltz joins his team nate ss. >> usually i'm at a loss for words. all four will be inducted into the hall of fame in july.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. we are getting a peek back in time this morning to 1795. con serve tors at boston's museum of fine arts opened a time capsule placed in the state house 220 years ago. inside, a metal plate owned by paul revere newspapers and documents and coins dating back to 1652. the time capsule was unearthed once before in 1855 before being put back and forgotten about until last year. investigators in new zealand

will try to figure out what caused a skydiving plane's engine to fail. all 13 people aboard are safe this morning after dramatic escape as the plane was going down. sophie lowery of tv3 new zealand reports. >> reporter: this is not the view that causes skydivers to dive from a plane. just before half past 12 a flight took off from an airport. this is the plane's view showing the path they took. they hit what the company describes as an engine problem and the plane started to dive. >> big explosion in the air. it was a tandem sky dive plane. i knew it was straight in trouble straight away. >> there were 13 people on board. police say they were the pilot and six passengers that were going out to tandem sky dive with six crew members.

as the plane plummeted, everybody jumped for their lives and deployed safely to shore. >> parachuting down. yeah, i think the pilot, he must have been the last one to get blackberries. >> witnesses raced out to help. >> three or four to start with and then word got around and then more people very the commission has sent three investigators to toe pore to speak to them. >> close to the shore. we've got a salvage team that's on its way to get the wreckage out and get it here where we can do an inspection of it. >> reporter: the whole investigation could take a year and a half but the great ef relief is that everybody is around to tell their stories to the investigator.
