news" for thursday january 8th 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning paris is a city on edge. france's terror alert system is at its highest level as police hunt for two heavily armed men who allegedly shot and kill 12 people in the office of a paris newspaper. the french prime minister said there were several arrests overnight connected to the search, and adding to the tension this morning two police officers have been shot in a parisian suburb. elaine cobb is in paris. elaine, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. a massive manhunt is still under way here. the city is on high alert.

now, french police have issue edd wanted posters for two brothers who have carried out the attack. the brothers are already known for being linked to terrorism. and there was more violence. two police officers were fired upon. they're both seriously injured. it's unclear yet if that incident is linked to yesterday's attack. security has been stepped up across the country. it's now at its highest level as extra soldiers and police officers are guarding media offices, schools, religious sites around the country. today is a national day of mourning, and there'll be a minute of silence at noon. and there are also rallies planned for around the country as french people say they're defiant and they refused to be intimidated by terrorists. anne-marie? >> elaine, i see the day has begun. there are people going about their business behind you. can you give a sense of what the

mood is like in paris on day like this? >> there's a mixture here of fear and also of determination to just keep going. there was a lot of anger last night when i was speaking to people at the rally. they said, we will not be intimidated. we're not giving in to fear. some said, i was afraid to come out but i wanted to just so say i'm not going to stay at home. we will not let them win. >> all right. elaine cobb in paris. thank you so much elaine. the prime minister said the main concern this morning is the possibility of a new attack. police searched the apartment lived to the gun suspects. they searched the offices of "charlie hebdo" yesterday. it had been targeted before after lampooning islam and prophet muhammad. they spoke fluent french and called out the names of specific employees. the two men are brothers known to the intelligence services.

one has been convicted of terrorism charges before. a third suspect, the youngest surrendered to police. a witness said the gunmen as they made their mistake, they told the media -- they said rather, tell the media it is al qaeda in yemen. well today has been declared a nation dale of mourning in france. rallies were held across france in memory of the victims and in support of free speech. many held signs that read i am charlie. alphonso van marsh is in london. alphonso, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. i am charlie has become a rallying call in support of the victims and free speech. it came out after the suspected gunmen said i killed "charlie hebdo." authorities stood guard outside east of paris as they looked inside an apartment looking for two remaining fugitives. in their hunt they're circulating this wanted poster along with two inches of two

brothers. a third suspect has already turned himself in. the massive man hunt for the french nationals began yesterday. officials say the suspects stormed the offices of "charlie hebdo" with machine guns and then opened fire. they exchanged gunfire with police outside. in the end 12 people were dead including magazine's editor several cartoonists, and two plivgs. >> appeared to be well organized, well planned, well executed. >> amid fears of more violence officers are guarding media officers places of worships and other sites. in a video a few days ago a member of jihadi issued a chilling order, to commit violence in france. the french have always been a target. they called the editor of

"charlie hebdo" for his depiction of the prophet muhammad. the city of france and people began a national day of mourning. now, anne-marie for this national day of mourning flags at the presidential palace are at half-staff and all with pause for a minute of silence at noon today. >> thank you. as the staff was holding an editorial meeting. eight journalists including several well known cartoonists, two police officers a minute tense worker and viftder were methodically gunned down. 11 others were wounded, four seriously. the attack was condemned by world leaders including president obama. >> the fact that this was an attack on journalist ss also underscore underscores freedom of speech

and freedom of the press. >> among the dead is the magazine's editor who never shied from controversy and often used his pen to sa tearicly portray islamic extremists. the gunmen killed him and his police bodyguard first. craig boswell reports. >> he was known professionally by his nickname sharb. he was the chief editor of the weekly satire "charlie hebdo" as one of his top cartoonists. he was no stranger to controversy and fiercely expressed his right to freedom of suspension. one must not draw pigs dogs rabbits, he said because that makes them angry. we're going to make 16 pages if we have a right to right "charlie hebdo." he was in charge when a fire bomb destroyed the paper offices in 2011. that was after the pup indication invited the prophet muhammad to be gaeft editor. in 2012 he ran pages.

scene as carnage. the extreme weather continues today. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has our forecast. >> chances are if you live along the rockies or anywhere eels it is awfully cold in your town right now.& we even got a big area of high pressure that's building its way down. most of the winds have turned out of the eric tick with temperatures way below average. we've got win windchill advisories and warnings from the border of canada right on down to central florida and along the gulf coast. many looking at subzero windchill out the door. at 7:00 a.m. even places like atlanta, portions of atlanta and mississippi, and brutal cold from chicago over into the new england area. we're talking 30 to 40 below. abating a bit as you ride home but still that's sharply cold stuff. lots of layers needed. average air temperature highs, 7 in marquette. right near the freezing mark in

california health officials say at least nine people contracted measles after visiting a disney theme park. they all visited disneyland or disney california adventure in mid-december. several people in california and two people in utah have contracted cases of the airborne illness. six of the case were not vaccinated. >> and bill cosby returned to the stage wednesday after the cancellation of ten tours. he left the stage where he got a standing ovation from fans. outside protesters braved the cold to send a different message about cosby. about a dozen carried a sign that sate "rape is no joke" and

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. the heisman trophy won by o.j. simpson has been found more than 20 years after it was stolen from the university of southern california campus. the lapd recovered the trophy last month. it was taken from the usc athletic department in 1994 at the time simpson was awaiting trial for the murder of his ex-wife and friend. the stolen trophy is a duplicate of the won simpson won as college football's best player
