2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. there is breaking new this morning in the hunt for two brothers suspected in the attack on a french newspaper that kill 12 people. a french security official said the suspects have stolen car this morning in a town about 30 miles northeast of paris. elaine cobb is in paris with the latest. elaine good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. social media here is filled with pictures of helicopters ore that torn in northern france where the interior minister confirm mace superior police operation is under way. french media say the two main suspects have been sighted there and they've taken at least one hostage. >> elaine, i know that things are unfolding and it's difficult to know what's going on. do we have any idea where the brothers may have been ore thever the last 12 hours or so?

>> reporter: the brothers have been tracked across towns in northeastern france. the police have been following and sweeping through that area doing house-to-house searches, throwing up roadblocks in an attempt to find them. this morning's news is the first real tip they've had of the possible whereabouts of the two. >> i know that thursday was a national day of mourning in france, but i can only imagine the country and the city is still on edge. can you give me a sense of what it's like there today? >> reporter: security is still tight in paris where parisians are still on edge. it's been stepped out to check the most popular tourist sights which includes the eiffel tower which went dark for five minutes after the "charlie hebdo"

shooting. they're back to work and they're promising a massive print run next week of 1 million copies. >> we know that some mosques had been fire bottombombed and there was some anti-muslim reaction. can you give us a sense of what the tension is like between the french government and the muslims in the community? >> reporter: there's a crisis cabinet meeting under way at the moment. one of the main problems for president francois hollande right now is to make sure the right winged political parties don't cash in on the shooting to whip up anti-muslim sentiment. it's emerged that the policeman shot execution-style on the sidewalk was himself a muslim who died defending freedom of speech. >> all right elaine cobb. thank you so much. this morning we're learning

more about the two suspects. the men were identified by an i.d. card that was left in the getaway car. they were well known to officials. heavily security forces are conducted house-to-house searches. president obama wrote in the condolence book at the french embassy, terror is no match for freedom. next week the newspaper "charlie hebdo" will publish a special edition. it's a bone-chilling morning. record-breaking cold. in minnesota it's the cold the snow, and high winds. drivers face blizzard-like whiteout conditions in many parts of the state. there were hundreds of crashes, and the high in minneapolis is expected to be just 3 degrees. the freezing air has also been hammering the east coast. fountains froze in new york city where the windchill hit minus 6.

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is following the dangerous cold spell. >> we're watching the same system that quickly moved through the midwest, created the blizzard conditions yesterday, now bring some snow across the northeast. this may bring an issue for places like boston suburbs and new york city. a band of snow and a lot of it not at the right time. the great lakes, watching the buffalo area and up toward the tug hill plateau. lake-effect snow warnings are here through the morning hours and saturday morning talk 2g to 4 feet really watching that commute in and around buffalo especially as the band shifts toward the evening and winds gusting at 450 miles an hour. more cold here. highs of 43 in new orleans and atlanta, single digits in chicago and surrounding cities.

meanwhile, seattle at 50. not too bad for january. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. this morning indonesia's search crews heard pings that could be from flight 8501. divers are trying to locate the so-called black boxes. four more bodies have been recovered from the sea floor bringing the totals of 48. there were 162 people aboard the airbus a 320 when it crashed into the java sea. today president obama will plan to offer two free years of community college to most students in the u.s. he eat outline his plan in tennessee, state that began offering free tuition this year. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning. under the president's plan students will be able to earn the first half of a bachelor's

degree or be able to acquire technical skills needed to get a job. now, the white house says if all 50 states participate, as many as 9 million could benefit, eich of them saving about $3,800 per year. the president outlined the details of the plan in a video posted last night. >> quite simply what i would like to do is see the first two years of community college free for everybody who's willing to work for it. that's right, free for everybody who's willing to work for it. it's something we can accomplish and it's something that will train our work force so we can compete with anybody in the world. >> now, to qualify, students would have to attend community college at least halftime and also maintain a grade point average of 2 president 5. that's about a c-plus make steady progress toward a degree at participating students and have to meet academic standards with fully transferable credits. the federal government would pay

three-quarters of the cost and the state would cover the last quarter of the cost but the white house did not detail how it would be paid for. also congress would have to approve this plan and a spokesman for republican house speaker john boehner said with no details it sounds more like a talking point than a plan. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. jury selection begins this morning in the murder trial of the former nfl star aaron hernandez. the one-time patriots tight end is accused of killing odom lloyd, who was dating his sister. he faces a separate murder charge in boston. and nfl owners are lining up behind commissioner roger goodell this morning. an investigation finds goodell and the league botched their handling of the ray rice case. the 96-page report from former i director robert mueller also pointed to a weak domestic abuse

policy, but it sees no evidence anyone in the league saw graphic video of rice hitting his fiancee before it landed on the internet. police in cleveland are facing new scrutiny this morning in the death of tamir rice. newly released public surveillance video shows an officer in the aftermath. >> reporter: newly released video shows tamir rice's sister racing toward the scene after the officer shot the 12-year-old. another officer handcuffs her and puts her in the patrol car. >> i never saw anything so cruel. >> reporter: a shorter version of the surveillance video was leased in november days after the shooting and ended with the patrol officer timothy lohman

shooting her. he said he shot rice as he was reaching for something in his waistband. it turned out to be a toy gun. it showed them standing around without trying to help rice. an fbi agent in the area on a different case began first aid four minutes later. >> you have to ask yourself would tamir be here if someone had simply tried. >> reporter: paramedics carried rice away on a stretcher more than 13 minutes after he was shot. he died the next day. cleveland police refused to comment on the video but the case has been turned over to the sheriff's office. a grand jury will be decide whether to charge the rookie officer. coming up on the "morning news," desperate suspects run. and bill cosby is heckled

two men climbed and leapt over. they fell about 20 feet before setting off on foot. police caught up with the suspects just a few minutes later and they were both arrested. one of them was rushed to the hospital. a third man who stayed behind in a minivan was also taken into custody. >> and after a string of cancellations bill cosby took the stage for a second night thursday. the show in canada didn't go as smoothly as the comedian hoped. angie seth of "global news" reports. >> no, no stop. stop it. >> reporter: met by boos in the audience, the heckler who referred to bill cosby as a rapist was quickly escorted out. cosby's response was a request for patience. >> no one said anything. we were really surprised because

forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch," a record fine for honda and elvis's record plays big at an auction. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. honda has been slapped with a $70 million fine by the federal government it. is the largest. honda failed to report more than 1,700 complaints that led to deaths and injuries over the last 11 years. honda says it has resolved this matter and will move forward. here on wall street stocks

forecast in some cities around the country. we are continuing to following developments in the search for the two suspects in the deadly shooting at a paris newspaper. the men were spotted this morning northeast of paris and now a tense confrontation with police is unfolding. elaine cobb is in paris with the latest. elaine, what can you tell us? >> reporter: there are reports that at least one hostage is being held by the brothers in a factory near the charles da goal airport. one says they have been killed but a paris office has denied that. the french interior ministry

will only confirm a police operation is under way in the area. the minister was speaking after a crisis meeting after a meeting with president francois hollande, the prime minister and the police chief. >> about the movement of the brothers after the attack on the newspaper, do we know where they went and how they got to the area that they're in now? >> reporter: there were several sightings of them after the attack. but there's still a lot of details that the police are unwilling to share with the media. we heard they were sighted in a town in northern france. police are undergoing a sweep across the area searches along the road. they were spotted at gas station at one point and there's conflicting reports whether or not they abandoned the car and this morning there are leads that they're holding a hostage near the charles de gaulle

here's another look at this morning's top stories. the french official says two suspects stole a car. sources say they've taken at least one hostage. it's another morning of dangerously cold weather across the country. across the midwest there are single-digit temperatures and blizzard-like conditions. the connecticut court ruled thursday the 17 can undergo chemotherapy to save her life. don dahler has more on the girl known as cassandra c. >> reporter: she was diagnosed in september with hodgkin's. with treatment there's an 85% chance of survival. without treatment, most people

die within two years. >> the fact that cassandra is a minor does nothing -- >> reporter: lawyers argue that the 17-year-old was mature enough to choose how her cancer should be treated. attorney mike taylor. >> we don't think maturity falls upon us the day of our 18th birthday. not to be flip about it but the constitution doesn't fall upon us on our 18th birthday. minors have rights as well. >> reporter: a court ordered cassandra to take treatments in november. twoof treatments she ran away. the state took temporary custody. she's now confined a hospital and is received chemo. she has the support of her mother who calls chemo toxic and poison. >> what other forms does she want in terms of treatment? >> we haven't gotten that far yet because she was pulled away. she may not be able to have children. it's documented. it's in black and white.
