4:30 am
4:31 am
>> eye on the storm is a real headache. a live look at the condition oil 76 near the spring garden overpass. the plow trucks are out in force this morning trying to keep those roads safe for drivers. please, give them their room to get their work done. good morning everyone. >> we have live team three coverage. first we check in with kate bilo tracking the storm. >> yes, we are tracking a mess, all depends on where you are. seeing a little bit of everything this morning, kind of my owe political tan style storm scan3 with a lot of colors, purpose epp, snow, the pink freezing rain, the green, rain. portions every illinois all the way newspaper new england heavy rain north carolina we are right in the middle. on any other day this could be a run of the mill rainmaker or run of the mill even light snow maker but unfortunately temperatures in our area are right on that borderline, straddling the freezing mark, when you get those kind of temperatures, you get the threat for ice. of course, most people, i know, at least i would say
4:32 am
there is i'll take snow any day, i'll take rain any day anything but ice. unfortunately that's what we're talking about this morning, you can see to the north and west pink shade interesting over portion of lancaster, chester counties, where the rain is coming down, could be mix withing some sleet at the moment. you can see the ice and freezing rain, remember, keep sending those reports in facebook and twitter let me know what you're seeing, the best way for us to know exactly what's going on throughout the region. see steady rain there in south jersey. so it is just going to be messy morning all across the board. winter weather advisory positive posted for almost the entire area, go into interior south jersey, no down toward the shore point, where it will stay all rain. rest of the region poconos winter weather advisory going until 5:00 p.m. lehigh valley until 1:00 in the city just until around 10:00 a.m. so up in the poconos, pigs of snow ice rain, freezing rain, all day freezing rain and ice changing over to plane rain from the city on north and west. that change-over will happen by late morning early afternoon, then mainly rain through south jersey, and delaware temperatures right now hovering near the freezing mark, we expect to get to the
4:33 am
upper 30's, this afternoon. now, our team three weather coverage continues with meteorologist, carol erickson live in the cbs-3 mobile weather lab, it can track weather conditions in any neighborhood. >> this morning, camden county. hi carol. >> reporter: yes, we are in cherry hill, we couldn't give you exact description to begin with because we're traveling around, and you can see what we're following we are following a salt truck and we've been up and down route 38 with this, and he's been going back and forth over ramps over to route 38, off route 38. so this is a morning where you really want to pay particular attention through any of the overpasses because grounds temperatures can be frozen or not frozen, and that can change in a matter of a couple of feet. depending on whether there is any air underneath, as you'll find with these overpasses and that sort of thing. so there is a lot of salt down on dollars road, driving
4:34 am
along, probably need your car wash tomorrow, that much salt on the road, it is needed, little bit of just depending on where you are you might finds a little spec of ice on the ground, though your car top may not have any even when you come out first thing this morning because the temperature layers just different. where ever you are, may be finding it different even standing in the same spot. sort whatever we find with the atmosphere, but we do it kind of on micro scale when we're standing next to the grounds and having it one temperature and the top. our car another. so this is just what we will be dealing with, we will be headed west as well, where these temperatures are coming down and they're going to be right around that danger level, as we continue to freak this guy out as we continue to follow him. but we will give him a break. we will be following somebody else soon, and he's doing his thing and we will be doing ours. and we will be letting you know exactly where the trouble spots are this morning, and i know that that will be information that will be useful to you jessica. >> it will be.
4:35 am
i was just thinking, how long are you guys going to follow him before he's going to start getting suspicious and pull over. thank you, carol. 4:35. we start things offer actually out on the schuylkill expressway where there are some salt trucks out there get being ready to start putting salt on the road. i wish coy follow them as women. we are kind of following them, watching them on camera, as well, right around montgomery, everything still moving great. no real volume. see the roads little shiny little wet, ponding in some spots, where the salt trucks are getting ready waiting to really get out there and start putting some salt on the roads. over out on 95 right around girard southbound moving just fine. the southbound moving along fine northbound moving along great, there as well. see ponding in the roadways there, also, we know it is wet, so it means it is slippery. give yourselves extra time out in plymouth we do have accident at home man avenue and pastel lane. very slippery out in wilmington delaware, also have speed restrictions up on 495 northbound and sass bound
4:36 am
now out in south philly water main break 19th street add at federal street. pay attention to local detours. >> jess, thanks so much. they say time something everything. the timing of this wintery mix couldn't be worse for our morning come. >> the jan carabeo joins us with conditions out there good morning. >> reporter: good morning, it is now raining again here in conshohocken the traffic, how much; light of course. that will pick up in about an hour. coming to you live from the intersection every front and fayette streets this morning you can see just couple of cars on the road, but already that shine on the roadway and as the temperature hovers around the freezing mark, will causal of the problem. setting ourselves up for tricky travel morning. definitely build in some extra time as everyone has been telling you. meantime penndot crews have been out all night salting the roads, all 182 state trucks are out and number of contractors have been called in as well. now, penndot says this is a spreading operation this morning. meaning, these trucks will be out salting the roads.
4:37 am
because of last week's storms, we're told there actually isn't a need to brine the roads today because they're still a considerable amount of solution left over. these penndot trucks are geared up and ready for the storm. take a listen. >> we had considerable amount of salt residue on the roadways remaining from friday. we placed salt down, little earlier in the week on tuesday, when the snow hit the region then we had squawls come in friday morning in which we put salt down, so we felt there was a considerable amount of salt on the roadway already. so that did not necessitate the brining operation today. >> so the rain is already fall falling, you can see a shine on the road, and there is actually some snow left over on the sides of the roads as well. so do expect many salt trucks out there this morning more than 200 of them, and penndot says the safest place to be actually behind these trucks for your safety, do not pass them stay a least six car lengths behind, of course builds in some extra time to your morning commute because it is setting up to be a very
4:38 am
tricky one. reporting live in conshohocken this morning, jan carabeo cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> jan, thank you. updating breaking news in south philadelphia, where crews work overnight to repair a water main break right before the morning rush sets in. >> "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch at 19th and federal right now with the latest justin, good morning. >> good morning, yes driver trying get in the area of 19th and federal this morning you may finds some roadblocks out there. police have secured those areas, so water crews can come back out here this morning and fix that pipe that caused so many problems out here overnight. we know that pipe is about 12 inches long, and is underground, the age of the my we do not know with you we -- but we know before 1:00 this morning, that pipe did break and cause heavy leaking in the area water crews did respond out here, and they were able to shut off that water in the area that does affect about 30 or so residents in the area, however, at this point it does
4:39 am
appear that service is shut off for the time being. now, back out live to show you where all this happened, just kind of right behind me here, see the large conveyance vehicle on top of it, lot of dirt and mud out here, that pipe has been since turnoff. the water flow to it crews will respond at some point back to check it out and make sure it will be okay, but resident in the area may finds themselves without water this morning, or reduced service. we are live in south philadelphia i'm justin finch, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> justin, we'll get back to you, thank you. >> on the health watch this morning, vaccine concerns foreign fans. new data indicates not enough infants are getting vaccinated against wrote owe virus it causes severe diarrhea, dehydration, and can frequently lead to hospitalization. researchers say babies specially preemies are at risk. doctors also say the vaccination should be given at two month with other shots. >> right now it is 4:39.

4:54 am
of like i call a neo political tan ice scream rain, snow, wintery mess we're dealing with here in the philadelphia area. mainly in the north and west suburbs at the moment, where you can see the rain coming down pretty stead at this there in portion every chester county few sleet pellets mixing in, also icing see where the pink shading in, the areas getting the icing at the moment. specially again western montgomery, western chester upper bucks, into the lehigh valley precipitation is light at the moment, but it is going to increase in intensity throughout the rest of the day it, could freeze on contact. went winter weather advisory, any place shaded in purple, most under a winter weather advisory ends up 5:00 p.m. in the poconos, 1:00 p.m. in the lehigh valley, 10:00 a.m. in the city when we expect the transition. so icy mix through the morning hours, then in the afternoon periods of rain, 38 degrees today, tonight we drop down into the 20's, before the after the rain ends, i should say, don't expect any more icing tonight. could still be slick spots black ice out there. tomorrow colder, high just near freezing, wednesday 33,
4:55 am
but then little bit of good news in this miserable forecast, do have warm up by the weekend looks like temperatures get back to the 40's, and we'll see some sun both saturday and sunday. now we check in on the roads with jessica good morning. >> hey, good morning everyone just 4:55, an early start so we don't have ton to talk about in terms of volume. we do have a lot to talk about in terms of slippery wet roadways. so actually starting off out on the schuylkill, where you can see where the flashing lights are penndot crews that have been sitting out here for quite some time waiting to go out and start salting the roads, i think they just actually have left. we know there are crews out there salting all over the roads, so we can try to give ourselves some extra time, we know they're at least have our back in that aspect, headed westbound, no problems headed eastbound, no problems there as well. now, over around the blue route, mid-county tolls everything moving great here. you can see some small ponding just little built obviously shiny roadways there we know they're wet and slippery. just give yourselves little extra time. can't stress it enough. out in delaware, they already
4:56 am
have lowered some speeds speed restrictions there 55 miles per hour due to weather on 495 northbound, and southbound, and out in plymouth, an accident, pushed over into the shoulder there around almond avenue and pastel lane. now, the rest of the majors, still no problems on the pa turnpike, 59 or 422 but it doesn't really mean much. still want you to tack on few minute onto your travel times because you just got to give yourself extra time when headed out the door so it is not dangerous. >> thank you, jessica coming up in the next hour of "eyewitness news", we are continuing to track that wintery mix that could slow down your morning commute as kate mentioned we're seeing rain and freezing rain in some spots. we're checking in with our crews as you look liver from the mobile weather lab coming up. >> following breaking news as water gushes out after broken water main overnight live with what crews are doing to clean that mess up. back at the top of the hour, good morning.
